There was something to be said for a quiet night. Actually, Linarite could have gone on quite at length how nice it was to have everyone off somewhere else, doing something more important than holding the fort here in Destiny City. Tanzanite could barely be kept from the place, and while Lina could sometimes stomach sitting and watching the injuries appear out of nowhere, it was time for her to stretch her legs and loosen tension. Shoulders rolled and arms stretched above her head as the general lithely hopped from building to building, sliding down to the street when it suited her to rob some poor hobo of his energy.

All-in-all things were going great! Sure her boyfriend thought she was totally in the middle of a study session at the library and had no idea that she'd been lying to him for weeks now...but that wasn't the point. Valentine's Day had come and gone, been wonderful, and Audrey felt on top of the world. It was a pity that Linarite couldn't share the sentiment. It was becoming harder and harder to take the life of any random person, let alone the choice victims she'd been used to.

Oh sure, a few fell to her itching palms' need to satisfy her craving for the power of a life. But never as many as before. Life was turning upside down on the young woman, and she wasn't entirely sure the Queen would be pleased when she found out. There was no 'if' she found out. No, not ever. Beryl knew everything almost as soon as a thought was born in the minds of her generals.

It was with these thoughts in her mind and the false security of a quiet street around her that the bluenette forgot to scan the next block for energy before striding down the middle of the sidewalk -- usually a fatal mistake.

Eternal Sailor Taranis spent the first week after upgrading to the ultimate level of senshi strength honing his shiny new skill. It was a high to think of his battle repertoire now, and once again, the senshi felt glad that he had such an offensive attack. First sand, then hardened sand, now glass. Taranis had felt the might of an eternal senshi first hand when he battled Castor, and then, his friend had been holding back. It still hurt for weeks after. Part of him wanted to challenge Castor to a rematch, but there was a much more important task at hand.

It was time to murder General Linarite.

Castor and Taranis had called a cease fire once upon a time, but the window for the Senshi of Hail to finally correct the mistake he made had passed. Now it was open season, and Linarite was his mark. He just had to find her.

Nights were long now. Taranis patrolled from sun down to sun up looking for her. It was two weeks after Valentine's Day. He was prepared to do this for a year if he had to, two years, three even. For a boy who had been chronically unlucky his entire life, apparently the winds of fortune had changed.

Just a few two stories below him, strolling as if she were walking home from school, was General Linarite. Taranis felt his eyes widen, his heart race. This was the moment he had been waiting for; this was what all his practice had been for. Linarite had nearly taken the only thing in this world that he truly loved. The only way for Dani to truly be safe would be to kill the one who had almost taken her life before.

And that was going to happen tonight.

Without warning, Sailor Taranis wound up his energy and whispered, "Taranis Sand Blast!" It was just his base level attack, but it could get her attention. The orb soared like a rocket from his fingertips and exploded squarely on the back of Linarite's head. Poised at the edge of the roof, Eternal Sailor Taranis did not strike a pose. He had no battle banter to bat back and forth with her.

He was there for only one purpose: to find his revenge.

It was only an exquisite sense of balance and having been hit in the head many times previously that kept Linarite from going flat onto her face. The sand slid down the back of her coat and had the general immediately growling with both anticipation and annoyance. She had promised Taranis that she was going to wear his heart as a necklace, and Lina tried to keep every promise she made.

The staff was already firm in her hands as heels pivoted...and her jaw dropped. When had he powered up?! The Taranis she'd nearly crushed beneath her boots in Elysion had been the Super, this was Eternal Sailor Taranis! Fists closed reflexively on the staff and for a moment the bluenette knew fear. But she'd stood her own against Tanzanite, hadn't she? Alright, so their intentions were different.

But she knew how to fight. He wouldn't get the better of her because in her heart Lina knew she wasn't meant to be his victim. "I see you found a cat who felt sorry enough for you to give you a push in the power department. Good. I don't want this to be easy." The staff raised as she lunged, red ball flying out without the usual whip.

She had a surprise for him. Laurelite had helped her turn the key to her own true power. It had involved a few things that were less than pleasant but now when the ball hit Taranis, he'd get a nasty little shock. Literally a burst of cold through the skin and muscle where it hit.

The perfect guinea pig.

Taranis stalked along the ledge of the roof. He had been dancing across the rooftops of Destiny City for a year now. At first, it had involved a lot of stumbling and many broken bones. Now it was his turf. 98% of the battles that the Eternal Senshi of Sand got into were fought from a rooftop. If he could manage it, he tried to never give up this vantage point. It was where he was most comfortable, where he was most powerful.

Even when Linarite tried to bait him, Taranis kept silent. He dove out of the way of her first strike, catching himself with an awkward roll before popping right back up. The orb struck the ground beside him. It barely grazed his arm, but the slight contact sent a dagger of ice water rising in his veins.

Apparently he wasn't the only one who had learned a new trick.

Narrowing his eyes, Taranis ducked behind an air vent and maintained his silence, hoping to draw Linarite up onto the roof.

So he was going to attack her and hide? No, Lina wasn't stupid enough to think that he was being cowardly. The idea of a rooftop battle evoked a certain memory bad enough to have her hesitate for almost a whole second before remembering it was Taranis. He'd stopped her from killing Castor, had gotten in her way every time since, and seemed very badly to want to join his girlfriend in eternity.

Though teleporting would have given her the advantage, it was not to be abused due to its drain of precious energy. He was a good fighter against her when a rank below. Now that they were at least evenly matched in power she was going to need everything possible. So as she scaled the thin ledges to alight on the rooftop, the click of her heels was purposeful and almost echoed in the unnatural stillness of this street.

It seemed like the city itself was even holding its breath for the two. Her orb flew out again, thwacking noisily against the metal door to this particular roof. She had to draw him out in the open before exposing her back to him. Sand in the head hurt.

Despite being a largely resolute and logical boy, Taranis had displayed a marked lack of sense in confronting Linarite this way. It was true, yes, that he was now among the elite, small number of eternal senshi out there. This didn't make him any less green to his new power. Most battles were about odds and evens, bits and pieces. This one was about a score to settle.

And this was what made him reckless.

Breath escaped out of his throat in tight bursts. Gloved fingers gripped the smooth metal of the air vent. Taranis thought to peek out from behind, but his reward for the foolish impulse was the sharp spike of panic immediately after Lina struck the vent. Slowly, he whispered to his super attack again, forming a small baseball-sized hunk.

An arm flashed out, throwing it to the left of the vent. Taranis darted out to the right and called a second stronger attack, "Taranis Mud Blast!" A hardened hunk of wet sand went catapulting off his fingertips toward Linarite. Taranis didn't have time to stand and watch for his attack to hit. He needed to keep distance between them. He needed to stay covered.

The senshi kept running, headed for a risen green transformer sticking up off the flat cement of the roofing.

Oh no, she wasn't going to fall this time. The first mud ball was hit solidly and cleaved with her staff, slicing in two and though they impacted her legs, the stance was solid. Linarite knew from experience that falling off a building when you were unprepared to hit the ground below was less than pleasant.

Unfortunately what she wasn't counting on was the second. She had heard the attack but knew so very little about senshi that it hit her solidly in the side, forcing the teen to twist and heave her body the opposite way from the open air behind her. Linarite had lost her point of view as she flipped the mud away from her coat and spotted white and red dashing across the rooftop.

Then there was no time to look pretty as she dashed off towards him, snapping the ball out at the nearby transformer and hoping it might ricochet back in his face as it returned to its original position. She was not far behind him, and closing in fast.

Taking a chance, she leapt forward almost ten feet into the air. With any luck she would land on his idiot head.

The trouble with senshi was that they all had different attacks with different strengths, different weaknesses, and different patterns. For his skills, Taranis had a lot of attacks to pull from, giving him a magical battle endurance greater than what others had. His attacks, though, lacked the fancy bells and whistles of a magic attack with side effects. The Senshi of Sand had magical weapons, more or less. No vomit-inducing mist, no magical glitter that froze enemies in place. He just hit and hit and hit and hit with either sand, mud, or glass. In this case, it seemed to be a good thing.

Panic sat high in the senshi's chest. He could keep the upper hand so long as he continued to force Linarite to follow his motions. So far, it had gone well, but in all his imaginings of this plan, Taranis had never gotten past the first few blows. Now it was time to improvise.

Apparently, Linarite could improvise too.

The General soared into the air, her staff held high. Taranis heard her coming at the last moment and banked left, but two booted feet caught him hard in the shoulder. The lanky boy sprawled forward on his stomach, sliding several feet over the concrete roof. He rolled immediately to the side to avoid any follow-up attack she might have and then kicked outward at her legs, hoping to knock her off her feet so that he could again find the advantage of distance on her.

A hit! A rush of victory blew through Linarite just moments before his solid boot landed against her shin, a bleat of surprised pain coming unwillingly from the general's mouth. It had her landing on one foot off-balance and having to put a hand out against the transformer for support. It gave Taranis the time he needed to secure himself from falling off the roof and she cursed him for it.

What a coward! He attacked her and kept moving away, not really wanting to fight but what? Lure her? Standing to consider him, stance menacing, Linarite sent out her senses into the surrounding area. If there was an ambush waiting anywhere within a square mile, she'd be able to feel them. If she wanted to give up some attention and energy, she could really scan the area.

But there was nothing. No one but them. It couldn't hurt to ask, now could it?

"What are you running for? Hoping for some miracle to come and you can pound me into the concrete? It's not gonna happen." Fists tightened around her staff. She wanted to lunge, but knew he'd simply evade her again in a maddening dance. The bluenette wasn't going to allow him to exhaust her.

It was time to get serious.

Sailor Taranis darted behind another air vent. He was fortunate that this was an industrial building. It meant lots of objects jutting out from the roof for him to hide behind. It had been obvious where he ran so the senshi wasted nothing in the element of surprise by responding to the Negaverse General.

"I don't need a miracle," he said, a surprising amount of calm in his voice. "I need you to die. You deserve death. I don't believe in karma, but I plan on personally ensuring that you get a proper response for the evil you spread in Destiny City."

His mind was reeling. There was another air vent about ten feet away. Linarite knew exactly where he was. He couldn't exactly use the misdirection trick again. He doubted the plot would work twice. So he bought himself some time to think.

Speaking had always been his main skill in life. He tried to use it now. "Tonight, I am going to get revenge for Sailor Magellan -- and I am going to set Castor free from you, from whatever you did to make him betray the senshi by loving you," he said, a hint of anger bleeding into the words. There was a part of Taranis that would never forgive Castor for being involved with a Nega, but another smaller part told him that Lina's death might finally release the Eternal Senshi of Hail from the chains that bound him. An even smaller, much smaller part, was hopeful that perhaps, just maybe, he could get his friend back.

It would start tonight. It would start with her death.

There was just a hint of madness in the laughter springing from Linarite at the mention of Castor. It would be easy for Taranis to hear her coming and realize that she would be on him as soon as her patience and banter ran out. Banter wasn't something that the bluenette was overly fond of, she preferred to kill now and talk to the corpse like it cared what she had to say.

But she was about to make an exception.

Bitterness wove through her tone and the words were almost spit against the concrete. "He must be telling you a pretty story if you think that it was by my doing that he betrayed your failing cause. I guess he never told you that he was the one who kissed me first. He was the one who always begged me to come back, telling me he loved me, holding me and telling me he wanted to take me away from this place so that we could hide together from the world." Beneath the gloves her knuckles were white from gripping the staff and letting it all flow out.

Castor had sold her out to Tanzanite, she should feel no remorse for doing the same to him. "He hasn't come after me once. Night after night I go through the city and taking out its trash. He hasn't seen me once. I don't know what your precious little Castor has told you, but it's his weakness that makes him betray you. Not mine." No, her weakness was in betraying her own faction. But tonight she was going to make some amends for that.

She was going to kill Taranis.

Her ball flew around one corner to try his own misdirecting trick, rising on her toes to minimize the noise as she darted around the opposite corner of the vent and swung for his head. All it would take is one hit to down him. One lucky hit...

His ears pricked at the sound of Linarite's boots drawing near. The next air vent was too far for him to reasonably make. If he lost the upper hand, he might lose the fight, lose everything. It was not a concession he was willing to make. The peals of laughter, manic laughter, made his skin crawl. He pictured her then, eyes cast in a shadow in the very same way they had been the night she nearly killed Sailor Magellan.

There was something else there: a tilt in her voice, a rusted hinge swinging wide. In all his years of debating, Parker had prided himself on only debating the facts. It didn't mean he hadn't been tempted to make a low blow when he sensed one. In battle, low blows were the only ones he knew.

Taranis swallowed hard, preparing his tone for a speech he knew would have to be convincing. Then Linarite struck. The Senshi of Sand hit the deck, scrambling along on his stomach just as the Nega rounded the corner. She expected to see him standing there, or perhaps running into her arms. Instead, he was making a beeline for the water tower a few feet away.

Before she could reach him, the senshi was hidden again, this time by the water tower. His voice echoed -- was he inside of it? Under it? Behind it? It was not clear.

Now it was his time to play his card.

"When Castor told me he could ******** a Nega if really wanted to," he said, raising his voice, "I didn't believe him. I had seen him get dozens of girls before -- but a Nega? What Nega would be stupid enough to trust an enemy? Castor was certainly stupid enough -- though he'd say confident -- to try it." Gloved fingers gripped metal. He needed to be convincing. He needed to employ every manner of manipulation he had ever possessed.

The boy let the words resonate before he continued. "Castor likes a challenge. You must know that, seeing how close you two were." Taranis had no idea if Castor and Lina had slept together, but he knew from experience that Castor was quick to sleep with most people. So a girl he loved? It didn't seem like a risk to assume it. "The other girls weren't as receptive to his advances as you, it would seem. I guess senshi who pretend to love you -- you as a person, you as a woman, you as more than just a piece of Nega trash... I guess that is your weakness."

Taranis fell silent.

Taranis would have let out a hefty breath of relief had he known the mental condition of Linarite these days. He hadn't needed to worry so much, or try so very hard to make his words convincing. Castor had given the weight to the senshi's false words without even meaning to with his charade of hating the girl he'd once professed to love so deeply. She could hear every word coming from Taranis' mouth (wherever it was) in the voice of Castor.

Knuckles popped with pressure and without even thinking a low scream echoed in the night. It snapped the general back into the moment somewhat -- had that been her? Taranis continued with his merciless assault on her heart and her feelings and it worked exactly how he'd imagined it would. Linarite went berserk.

"I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!" It was a harpy's scream of fury and denial as she gave up all thoughts of advantage and simply sought out her prey. "I am going to kill you and take your head to Castor, and then I'm going to kill him. I'm done with you senshi and you're all the same. Unredeemable b*****d aliens that don't belong with normal, decent people!" Like her? Was she normal and decent? Was she even a person? Was that why Castor had been able to use her so easily?

Augh!

Without thinking even for a moment, Linarite swung at the water cooler. If she hit it hard enough maybe that little s**t would fall from wherever he was hiding like a coward, and fight her! Once, twice, three times she struck it as hard as she could, forgetting one simple thing.

There was water in that tower.

The fourth hit had a tear opening in the metal of the water receptacle and it burst forth with the pressure of small hole, great volume. The bluenette was suddenly airborne back ten feet towards the edge of the roof from the pressurized jet, sodden and more furious than ever. "Taranis! You are a coward!"
PostPosted: Wed Feb 23, 2011 9:43 pm

His finger had pressed a nerve and then dug in a nail. If Taranis had expected to rattle her, then he had over-performed in his duties. The Nega seemed perfectly unhinged. Her scream made his hair stand on end, but he prepared himself for the wave that she brought out, even though it was a touch more literal than he expected.

From behind the water cool, Eternal Sailor Taranis rode out, moving with the jet of water that Linarite had created. He caught her squarely in the jaw with his fist, and then scrambled backward out of the way, dipping low and sweeping out one leg to trip her if she tried to pursue.

"I'm no coward," he spat. Fingers swirled, and he summoned a ball of mud and slammed it straight for her. "I will not kill you and then run off into the night. I'll stay to watch you die!"

The punch had her head snapping back and lashing out with a punch of her own hitting nothing but air. He could say all he wanted about not being a coward but dancing out of her range so that a single hit could never land was the utmost of cowardice. Never mind that it was a sound battle tactic and he could potentially tire her out with this, when Linarite wanted rather badly to beat the hell out of him it became irritating.

"You don't have it in you to kill me. You can't even land more than a punch!" Kicking off from the ground Linarite flew at him again with punches and kicks. He was able to get around the kicks and one arm came up to block most of the punches, giving his own back.

She caught one in the shoulder and one against her jaw again that had the general seeing vivid red. All of her energy went into those punches now and with a triumphant cry got one square in the center of his face. The crack was almost audible as blood started pouring from his nose and Taranis started to recoil back. Another punch was aimed at the side of his head but with the flailing, she wasn't sure it would hit.

"I've got you now!" Somewhat.
