Despite the attack that had occurred on those very premises, people were still moving into Tate's East Heights apartment building. A couple people had left, but the flow in made up for it.
In fact, in an apartment on the fourth floor that had been recently vacated by an old woman and her three cats, there was another DCU student moving in. Okay, actually, he'd moved in yesterday, and Tate was really curious as to... well, a couple things. Who he was, for one. Maybe they shared a course? Also how he was so lucky as to afford an entire apartment to himself. Like, seriously? She loved Parker, he was like her super-emo brother, but it was hell sharing a bathroom with him and she knew he hated sharing a kitchen with her.
(She tended to leave coffee grounds in the coffee maker. Annoying, she knew. She was unrepentant.)
This was why she was stomping up the stairs after work, still in her uniform from work at the cafe. "I smell like bread," she'd grumped to the mirror; and it was true, she did. This didn't stop her from knocking on the door to the new guy's apartment, a tray of muffins propped against her hip.

Sebastian hadn't really gotten settled in to his new apartment just yet; it wasn't like he'd been there more than 24 hours total. Actually, less than that, since he'd had to attend classes today. It was a little surreal for him, living in a new place. By himself.
But he'd had to move out. Well, Beth and Jon had told him he could stick around until he found a new roommate, but it had only taken a couple of days before the awkward levels had reached previously unknown heights. Living with newlyweds was awkward, and so Sebastian had asked his parents to help him out with the apartment thing. They hadn't been thrilled about it, but had finally agreed, provided he did find a roommate. And soon.
Sprawled on his sofa while the Science Channel played in the background, he was deep in one of his favorite books when the knock on his door interrupted. Looking vaguely irritated (and worried; had he invited someone over and forgotten?), Sebastian stood up and ran the hand not occupied by a paperback through his hair, serving only to mess it up further.
A few strides took him over to the door, and he blinked in confusion at the girl standing there. "I didn't order any muffins?" Had someone else? What was going on?

The guy didn't look all that bad, actually, they kind of looked vaguely related if she thought about it. Tate balanced the tray on one hand, propped the other on her hip. "I know," she said. "I'm your neighbor, from... well, I'm on the second floor. Anyway." She held out the tray. "Welcome to the complex. S'nice to see someone our age around."
Not like there wasn't also Grayson, Paul, Parker, and Xavier. Actually, shouldn't she mention them? But she'd never been much of a people person... or really all that good at greeting people.
Maybe this wasn't such a good idea? She made a bit of a face. "Anyway, so. I'm Tate Konstantin from 2C, sophomore at DCU, my major's Criminal Justice, and you're, um... Well..."
It was clearly an invitation, and also an invasion of personal space, if his expression was anything to go by.

"Oh," he replied intelligently while looking for all the world like he'd just woken up. Which in a sense, he had. Sebastian was definitely one of those people who got so involved in a book that it was like parts of their brain shut down so they could better focus. "That makes a bit more sense," he continued with a small, sheepish smile. "And, uh, thanks." Taking the tray of muffins in his free hand, he made a motion with his head indicating that Tate was welcome to come in the apartment if she wanted.
"Nice to meet you, Tate," he said as he headed over to the kitchenette. "I'm Sebastian Drake, also a sophomore at DCU, though I'm majoring in Aerospace Engineering."

She did want, and she followed. Boy had a cute smile, she thought, but he also looked to be a space case. She had enough of those on her hands at work. What was it about bakeries that attracted the meek, writerly types? Up to her head sick of them, and Tate was fairly tall. Like, six feet tall. She'd tell Sebastian that if he asked, but like it'd come up!
Instead, she leaned on his counter and looked around. Was it just her, or did he have a more spacious apartment than she did? Unfair! Or not, since these were really more or less arbitrary splits among rooms in an old boarding house, redone and modernized to current standards. "Gonna be a rocket scientist," she asked, running a hand through her hair. "I think I might've had a general education class with you last year."
Mathematics? Maybe. Can't have been English, she passed that AP course with colors so flying ******** Fearow was jealous. Was Fearow a Pokemon? Eh, probably.

"Yup," he replied proudly, setting the tray of muffins down and finally stuffing a napkin into the book as a paperback, setting it down as well. The cover was sort of generic space opera stuff, all explosions and stars. The only really unique thing was the presence of a female in uniform on it's glossy surface. "Could be," he continued, searching his memory. If they had, she hadn't done anything to draw his attention and he gave up trying to remember with a bit of a mental shrug. Wasn't really that important.
He eyed one of the muffins somewhat hungrily, but didn't take one; he was going over to his parents house to eat later, and one of the other things his mother had firmly beat into his head was Not Ruining His Appetite.
Not that he would by eating one muffin, really. Sebastian was one of those people who could eat like a black hole and never show it. "Is the bakery nearby?" he asked. Hopefully it was; grabbing something before heading off to school in the morning would be really nice.

She looked down at the book; it wasn't one she recognized, probably since it wasn't illustrated. It was just that she enjoyed the comic book genre much more than she enjoyed... space opera? It had to be a space opera, with a title like that. The Andromeda Strain. Cute.
"Yeah, it's passably nearby. Definitely on the way to DCU, that's how I found it to get the job." She offered a somewhat subdued smile. She didn't like to talk about her multiple jobs; the fact that there were multiple was somewhat embarrassing, for one thing. Her uncle helped her out every so often, but she liked to try and make it on her own. That was just a little harder than it would have been otherwise, and she liked to think it made her a better person. "Maybe we'll see each other on the way in, or something. I stop there most every morning for coffee and a bagel." Before coming back later that evening to work her a** off until close. "We open at five in the morning and close at midnight, so, it's not like evening classes are a big idea killer. Although all mine are before noon."
And now, if she were a great conversationalist, she would turn the conversation to something about him. Only she wasn't a great conversationalist, and couldn't think of anything to ask about. "So, um... good book?"

He brightened noticeably at her vague description of the location. "That'd be perfect," he enthused, looking far more awake and alert than when Tate had first seen him. "I prefer sleeping to making breakfast, so someplace on the way to school is just," he waved a hand in the air as if to complete the thought. "Don't mind if I can't hold up a conversation and reply with monosyllables. Not a morning person," he added with a grin.
"Oh, uh," Sebastian suddenly looked much less sure of himself. Apparently most people didn't ask about his reading material, or perhaps he was simply trying to find a way not to sound like a horrendous nerd. "Not really the author's best work, but it's early in the publication history." He offered a bit of a shrug and continued. "So I forgive the flaws and enjoy it anyway." He looked at her somewhat curiously. "Why, what sort of stuff do you read?"

"Don't worry," said Tate calmly. She totally understood his feelings about coffee on the way in to class. She needed coffee, needed it like her heart needed blood. Otherwise her schedule would very quickly become unmanageable, and no one needed the problems of Tate suffering from caffeine withdrawal and also probably severe exhaustion. She had the latter already and most people found her nigh unbearable. "I won't mind if you can't hold up a conversation. S'not my way. Also, it'd get me fired." One of these things was slightly more important than the other and she was not going to speak as to which.
She looked over at the book again, and then shrugged. "Textbooks," she said honestly. "Magical girl manga. It's interesting, comparing what's happening here to what crazy people in Japan read. But, um. I should let you get back to that. It's rude of me to keep you, don't you think?"
