Zhenyuli sighed happily as she meandered through the woods to a field. The bitterly cold chill of winter was beginning to wear off, and today it seemed as if spring was trying to warm the earth. The day was nicer and sunnier than it had been in a long time. This certainly helped to contribute to Zhenyuli's bright mood as she trotted along.
She was meeting her new friend and companion, Unenlagia, here. She and Raven had decided to go in separate directions some time during the winter, and she'd been alone in the new lands for a few days. One day she encountered the handsome lone stallion while searching for food. He wasn't the definition of "nice," he was rather a loner and somewhat rough in language and personality, but he was strong, experienced, and suave. He had acquainted Zhenyuli with the area and the two had stuck together, despite usually being very independent creatures, enjoying each others' company and challenges.
Zhenyuli had been beginning to get nervous and excited whenever she saw him. Lagia let her be independent and put up her tough front, but he was strong enough to also counteract it. Despite the fact that she was still tough and independent with him, Zhenyuli felt almost...protected. She knew he would be able to counter her easily and possibly even get her to back down from something, a feat only accomplished by her father or grandmother. This was attractive to her, and he seemed to be a good Soq. Neither had talked about their past much, but this didn't bother Zhenyuli.
For awhile Zhenyuli was puzzled by the little fluttery feelings in her, and then she finally realized that she was developing a romantic interest in Lagia! She couldn't believe it, that she'd ever want to depend on and attach herself to a male like that, but she couldn't deny that she really liked him, so she had finally just accepted it and began to think about how to go about letting him know she wanted more than just a friendship with him.
The Troll mare stopped, looking around for her friend. She had been toying with the idea of telling him her feelings lately, and the spring-ish air was giving her confidence. If the conversations went in the right directions today, perhaps she would. Now he just had to show up.

Unenlagia smirked a little to himself as he headed to his meeting place with Zhenyuli. She was so naive that everything about his deception had been pathetically easy. Other neighboring soquili had begun to notice strange things about him and ask questions. He decided to take the company of Zhenyuli as a way of forestalling those questions. So far so good. They could attribute some of his oddness to the actions of a lovesick idiot now. Fools.
The feathers in his mane danced slightly in the movement from his walking. Only him and Yazhi, his human companion, knew their secret. They were from the wings of a very unlucky wind soquili. They had killed the wind together and he still remembered how Yazhi had so gently tied the feathers to him. He couldn't understand what she was saying of course, but he imagined that she was remarking on how they matched his markings.
The temporary softness fell from his face. He looked around with his yellow eyes and sniffed. Zhenyuli was around. "Hey, Zhen!" he called out. He didn't really feel like searching all over for her so hoped she'd be within earshot.

Zhenyuli looked around as she heard her name being called. "I'm over here," she called, even as she walked towards the source of the voice. She was excited to see Lagia today, perhaps she would be courageous enough to tell him. Either way, it seemed as if it would be a lovely day, anyway, because the male's company was often more than enough.
After coming around some trees, Zhenyuli saw the stallion. She smiled and trotted closer, eyes briefly flicking to the feathers adorning Lagia, as they often did. Zhenyuli had often admired the brightness and vivid color of the feathers, and their strangely pointed edges. She still remained unaware, however, of their sinister history, and of all else.
"How are ya t'day, Lagia?" the troll mare asked, already in a pleasant mood. She was curious as to what the two of them would get up to today, if it would be more traveling or simply nothing much at all.

"Not bad, not bad at all," he replied. He had an easygoing sort of charm to him that he used when he wanted to set other soquili at ease. It wasn't hard. He had discovered that really, people wanted to believe that others were kind and well meaning. If he gave them any sort of reason to think that he was a good person then they'd seize upon it and ignore any evidence to the contrary.
"Scented some wolves north of here but didn't see them." His wolf companion Tkashi had been the one to actually take notice of that, but Lagia didn't feel the need to point that out.
Now it was time to get a little more personal and friendly. He made his conversational moves with as much thought as if he were stalking prey. Ironically, hunting came easier to him than this sort of idle banter. "You're looking nice today. The warm weather suits you."

Zhenyuli smiled. Lagia was always good at setting her at ease, even when she wasn't tense or stressed. He just had this easy charm around him that drew her to him, but it wasn't sleazy, like with other stallions. She trusted Lagia.
"Well, that's good ta know, although I don' think they should bother us." With Zhenyuli's tusks and Lagia's ability to drive off predators, becoming suddenly angry and vicious, but only to protect, the two were rarely bothered by anything that might mean them harm.
When Lagia complimented Zhenyuli, she resisted the urge to preen. She neither blushed nor acted excited, although she wanted to. She was not some swooning maiden! The compliment did bode well for her plan today, though.
"Thank you Lagia. I do love t' warm air and t' stronger sun. T' brighter sun also suits you, although it's rare that you look anything but good," she replied with a slow smile. Zhenyuli was blunt, but before she jumped headlong into her confession, she wanted to just test the waters a little for a reaction.

His smile grew a little more genuine. Like many soquili, Lagia enjoyed being admired. That was one of the nice things about tricking soquili. He enjoyed the compliments they gave him even if they were built off lies. If they admired him for a false personality then it was still them admiring something he had built himself.
"Thanks," he replied smugly. "It's just too bad I don't have your teeth. They glitter nicely, you know." He was partially teasing with that statement but not in an unkind way. His wolf had teeth like hers and he did honestly like them. They made her look a little dangerous even if he had never seen her use them.
"What are we going to do today?" he asked. "Do you have a plan, or are we just going to wing it?"

Well, this certainly seemed to be heading in the right direction for Zhenyuli's plan today. Her companion's smile made her happy, just a simple, little thing, and she actually found his small amount of smugness somewhat endearing. The stallion had her well fooled.
"Well, thank ya'. Not everyone admires t'em," the troll mare laughed. "Most people t'ink they'll be run through if they come ta' close." Without knowing iy, Lagia had just given himself a great advantage. After an incident in her past left Zhenyuli hating her tusks, she had grown a bit insecure about them, not that she'd ever show it, and somewhat loathe to use them unless in danger. A friend (and hopefully more) who admired them was not only a bit of a shock to her, but also something she had always secretly hoped for.
"Nah, no plan fer today. I figured we'd just start off an' see where we end up." Zhenyuli was biding her time a little bit longer, figuring she'd broach the topic once the two started moving.
