It was nearing midday at Amityville High, and Renaissance was, in fact, no where near the classes he probably should have been attending. Instead, after spending a bit of time tending to the garden he kept on the side of the school grounds, he was stretched out on his back on the grass, a book on his chest, head resting on one of his arms. He wasn't napping - a surprising fact, especially for the gryphon - and there was a skellyphone in his hand, pressed against his ear.

"For the last time," Ren was saying, rubbing his forehead with his free hand. "I am not coming home this weekend, Mother. How many times do I have to say this?"

There was a small laugh from the voice on the other end. "You can't avoid us forever, Renaissance," Amantine said, voice liked parched paper. "You are my son and you need to come home."

Ren let out a derisive snort. "Yeah right. And what color is the sky in your world, Mother? Call me when you come back to reality."

Snapping the phone shut without waiting for an answer, Ren turned it off, slipping it back into his pocket. A sigh escaped his lips, and he closed his eyes briefly, crossing one leg over the ankle of the other. There had to be something to get his mind off of the fact that his parents kept calling him every minute of every day. He would have gone to bother his closest friends, but Gabrian was off with LW, and Alessa was in class.

I need to DO something, Ren thought, idly tugging on a page of his book.

It was official, Jove was already in over his head at this school. Beginning in the middle of the semester was a challenge to any student, but for the little ghost there were so many things he didn't know about the world to begin with! History, geography, biology, maths, magics... Not only was he stuck trying to catch up on what the students had already learned in the semester, but what they had learned in the time before attending the high school.

The little pup was putting himself through the most rigorous study schedule in an attempt to absorb all the necessary knowledge, even staying awake all night to read book after book from the library. Lessons were a struggle, but he sat through them with a focused frown, eyes determined, ears firmly turned towards the front of the classroom... It was the same expression he wore as he dashed across the schoolyard, with another stack of books from the library piled high in front of him.

Jove was so set to conquer this new round of reading material, he didn't even notice the gryphon lying on the grass in his path.

Ren had been reading about fighting. The book in his hand, entitled "Boil and the Beast," had started off with a ghost boil who had run into a horrible, cursed demon ghoul who had forced him into serving her. It was a rather thrilling tale, full of intrigue and intense action scenes, and he had just gotten to the scene where the beast ghoul was battling the boil's fiancee to the death when he was, quite suddenly, interrupted.

By a foot, no less. This particular foot hit his side sharply, and Ren let out a squawk of surprise, jerking upwards. However, he was somewhat stopped in his movements when the owner of said foot tumbled across his middle, both of them winding up in a pile of limbs and a rather large, fluffy tail.

"What the - a;fnldsk;fack!"

The tail in question had accidentally thwapped him in the face. Ren pushed it aside and blinked, attempting to figure out just who - or what, really - had fallen on top of him.

"Er," he said, catching sight of wide, pale eyes and hair (were those freckles?) as he struggled to sit up. "Hello...might I ask what you, ah...are doing? Or rather, what you were doing, before you fell?"

It wasn't an overstatement to say that Jove had no idea what had happened, one minute he was on his feet, the next minute books were flying, and finally, he was lying facedown on something that definitely did not feel like ground. He was completely baffled. This was not good. And something was touching his tail.

Jove scrambled off the lump as quick as he could possibly manage, only then realizing it was a boil in the grass he had ploughed right over. A larger boil, who could stomp him, or put a curse on him, or... eat him. Oh skulls, this was not good at all...

The little pup scrambled backwards even further, and snatched up a fallen book which he then held out both as a shield, and as an explanation for his clumsy actions. He offered no words, just a timid whine of apology.

Once he had the tail removed from his face, the rest of the boil scrambled to get off off him, scooting backwards hastily. Ren could see his face clearly now - those were definitely freckles, spotted like dots of teal cinnamon across a pale face. His expression was one of mingled surprise, shock, and a hint of despair as he held a book up in front of him, as if to protect himself from Ren.

Who blinked, slightly confused. Especially since the book in the boil's arms was, in fact, the one he had just been reading.

"Er," said Ren, somewhat amused. It was obvious he had startled the poor boil, and he sat fully up, pushing himself to rest on his hand. He smiled at him, tilting his head.

"It's okay, I won't do anything to you," he said with a laugh, brushing stray strands of grass from his hair. "You don't look familiar; are you new here? I'm Renaissance, but you can call me Ren. What's your name?"

Jove slowly let the book drop to his lap, and his ears, which were folded back anxiously, loosened and perked up slightly. His head tilted slightly to match the gryphon's. So he had literally stumbled across a monster, but on closer inspection, he didn't look nearly the monster Jove had thought. Real "I'm gonna eat you!" type monsters didn't smile or talk in a friendly manner. Or smell like grass and dandelions and... something slightly spicy instead of blood and FEAR. And he even had tufty ears, and freckles too!

The little ghost's tail gave a hesitant little wag, and he nodded in response to the first question. "Jove," he said, softly as always. He glanced down at the book in his hands, and an expression of confusion flitting across his face as he realized... it wasn't his book. It was an entirely unfamiliar book, despite having a similar weight and heft as his others. With a sheepish, downward expression he offered it back to the gryphon.

Ren's tail flicked behind him in the grass, wings tucking neatly against his back as he scrutinized the younger boil. He seemed a quiet sort, small and almost delicate in nature, his ears pressed back against his fluffy teal hair as he shrank back a little. However, after a few moments, he seemed to relax a bit, and when he spoke, his voice was as soft and gentle as his appearance.

Ren smiled. "Well, it's a pleasure to meet you, Jove," he said, almost airily, then lifted a brow. He reached out, fingers wrapping around the spine of his book and took it from the younger boil's hands, giving him a nod.

"Thank you," he said cheerfully. "I was wondering where that had gotten to."

Leaning over, Ren peered curiously at the boil, tilting his head. He hadn't quite seen anyone like him before; he did not really seem like a demon, and that fluffy tail of his suggested otherwise anyway, so a monster, perhaps?

"How're you today, Jove?" Ren asked with a grin, retreating to absently toss the book from hand to hand. "Been having a good time at Amityville so far? Been on any exciting adventures yet?"

Jove's ears fell back slightly as he was watched, but there seemed to be no real malice behind it. Ren seemed pretty friendly. And pretty laid back, usually there was some tension if someone was trying to be threatening.

Satisfied that his un-life wasn't in any immediate danger, the pup's ears perked. Today he was... well, stressed out. One of his fluffy hears fell as he remembered all the learning he had to do before tomorrow's lessons. Ren's book looked more interesting, to be completely honest. It was probably for the best that Ren took it back, otherwise the pup would have been tempted to read it right along with his textbooks.

He left the first question with that nonverbal answer, his light blue eyes following the book as Ren tossed it back and forth. The second was answered by a demure nod, and the third, a slow head shake. After his brief chat with Yaya about the horrors of the Christmas field trip, he thought avoiding adventures would be a better way to keep all his little limbs intact.

Hmmmm... Ren mused, tapping his chin with a finger. A shy one, it seems...not very talkative, and it seems he's a little...afraid..? of me..?

Although why, I don't understand. I'm basically a kitten, though I keep telling LW I'm not.

The boil's expression kept shifting from uncertain to sort of happy, back to uncertain, then to something Ren thought might be dejected. He couldn't help but smile at him; there was something very endearing about him, even if he did not have much to say aloud. One could read a lot from just facial expressions, and it seemed as if Jove was one of those that did not particularly like talking. Either that, or he did not yet feel comfortable speaking out loud. Whatever the reason, Ren was not bothered by it; he found it rather adorable.

"Hmmm let's see if I can figure all this out," he said playfully, tilting his head. "You're having a relatively good day. From that nod, you're liking Amityville so far, and from that shake, you haven't gone on any adventures yet. Which," Ren added with an overdramatic sigh. " - is rather sad. Adventures are what make life fun."

"So tell me, little puppy," Ren said, reaching into the backpack he had set next to him and pulling out a notebook, along with a pen, doodling little stick figures in it. "Do you like Scario Kart? Or perhaps napping? I like both. Napping makes for excellent adventures in and of itself. You never know what sorts of dreams you might have~"

The pup's tail gave a short wag as he crossed his legs in front of him, getting into a more comfortable position for this apparent chat. It was always nice to meet someone who could understand him! Jove could surely leave his studies alone for a few minutes while he 'talked' with the other student, and so he made no move to pick up the books that still lay scattered around from his fall.

Although he shot Ren a doubtful look regarding his assessment of adventures and their potential risks and entertainment, it quickly turned into a mild scowl with ears flopped backwards. He wasn't a little puppy! Sure he was small, but... little puppy? It was hard to take too much offence though, what with Ren chattering on comfortably like they had been friends all semester.

He leaned forward slightly to peer at what Ren was doing, the grumpy expression quickly turning to one of curiosity. Drawing was something entirely new to the pup, he had been taught writing so he could attend the academy but he had never thought to turn instruments of writing into instruments of art. He would have to try it! Well, maybe after his studying...

Fluffy ears perked up again at the questions, and he tilted his head. Scario Kart...? Napping was pleasant, yes, but what was Scario Cart? A fancy pillow for napping on?

Ren tilted his head, catching the way the other's ears flicked back against his head, a mild expression of doubt crossing his features. "Still no adventures for you?" he said with a laugh, shaking his head. "Well, that's okay. Not everyone likes adventures. But not every adventure is a scary one, though it's the scary ones that are the most fun."

He tossed Jove a playful wink to show that he was teasing him and then went back to his doodling, surreptitiously sneaking glances at the boil every few moments. He seemed curious about it; a good thing - curiosity was always a good sign - and those fluffy ears of his flicked up interestedly.

"No?" Ren said. But that wasn't quite it... "Do you not know what Scario Kart is?" he asked. "Here, I'll show you."

He scribbled in the notebook for a few moments, then turned it to show Jove:

"It's a video game," he said with a smile, pointing the pen at the drawing. "You've got a character and you get to drive a little car thingy around on a racetrack and if you do it fast enough, you win."

Jove scrambled up onto his knees to get a closer look at the drawing, eager to see the final result.

Sadly enough, the doodle brought up more questions for the pup than it answered. One ear fell sideways as he puzzled it over, the road, and a funny looking bug with stalk eyes and a big nose, and a stick-like person that was supposed to be him sitting on it's head... The bug was Kart?

He wondered if the other half of the page would give him any clues, but the assortment of clouds, flowers, and circle thingies provided no further insight. He did like the mushrooms though! The pup's tail wagged slightly before he remembered he was still confused. Videogame? Character? That was another world of entertainment he had not yet experienced, and had no way to reconcile the drawing with what he was being told, and life in general.

Jove sat back on his heels with a confused expression, that was tempered with a grudging "you are speaking nonsense, please explain" face.

Ren couldn't help the burst of laughter that bubbled from his throat. Jove just looked so confused, one fluffy ear flopping to the side, his eyes narrowing and his face scrunching up as if trying to figure out just what on earth Ren was drawing.

"Sorry," he said, after he had reigned in his chuckling. "I'm not laughing at you. Your expression is just amusing, is all."

The puppy had leaned back, his face still a complete mask of confusion. He had lit up looking at the other page, though Ren wasn't entirely sure why; it was just a bunch of doodles after all. Ah, well. Too each his own, I guess.

"From that look you're giving me, you still don't understand it, do you?" Ren asked, then smiled. He snapped the notebook shut, tucking it into his bag, and pushed himself to his feet. On impulse, he reached down, scooping up Jove's discarded books, and began walking away with them. He turned back to look at the puppy as he did so, walking backwards for a few seconds.

"You coming, puppy?" he called cheerfully.
PostPosted: Thu Feb 24, 2011 3:49 pm

Jove scowled. was the gryphon saying he talked funny? Oh well, there were worse things than amusing someone who seemed a light-hearted sort to begin with. He shook his head in reply to Ren's question, almost like saying "So there. Your doodles talk funny too."

Then the pup's eyes went wide as Ren picked up ALL his books, and then started walking off without an explanation. He needed those books! And if he didn't return them, he wouldn't be able to get out any new books from the library!

And then there was that name again!

The shock morphed into yet another trademark puppy-scowl, and he scrambled to his feet to run after the older boil. Of course he was coming, Ren had his books! When he caught up, he tried to rescue at least one of the books held hostage by reaching over and giving it a small tug. It wasn't enough to pull the book free, but hopefully it would let Ren know that he could carry them too.

"Oh?" said Ren with a grin, turning back around to walk normally. "You don't like me calling you puppy, do you? Hmmm, then I'll have to come up with a different nickname for you."

Jove had reached out, tugging lightly on one of the books he held. "Nope," said Ren, holding them out of reach. "Can't have them juuust yet~ but don't worry, Freckles, I'll give them back."

With a wink, Ren made his way back towards the monster dorms, casting a glance over his shoulder every few moments to make sure Jove was still there. Despite the little scowl he was getting, Ren was still smiling; there was something about the little puppy that made it hard to get upset or angry at him.

Once they reached the dorms, Ren pushed open the door, gently nudging Jove in before him. He then swept playfully past him and moved to the stairwell, taking them two at a time to get up to the second floor. Once there, he made his way down to the third door on the right and pushed it open, sweeping into his room.

"Come on in, Fluffy," Ren said lightly, smiling warmly back at Jove. "Don't worry, I'll keep the door open."
