Bright granules of sand slid effortlessly through her fingers as the pallid green digits sifted slowly through the loose earth. Despite the lace and soft pastel of her dress, carefully she knelt beside the square and amassed the world again beneath meticulous standard to detail. Earth was her element. It made her feel safe and warm inside, in a sense most literal as it radiated softly through her hands. Still only a child, the earth didn't readily heed her calling. The sand clumped together only to break apart at the touch. The only substantial evidence she was even doing more than simply building imaginary kingdoms was a pebble at her side, having taken an odd shape akin to a spiked ball from her working at it so often. As it were she was oblivious to most around her. Despite the lingering gaze of her father, who observed from a bench not far off, it was as if he, nor the other children, existed just yet. Surely they would if they chanced talk to her and break that fragile state of concentration, but she hadn't yet seen any today who looked enough like her to try. Not yet, anyway.

Devan was walking with his mother though no one would guess. The young child was quietly chatting to a fox beside him. He had her green pendant on his neck and was commenting on the weather.

The animal never responded and just kept forward. He didn't mind though. He just liked to walk and be relaxed.

It wasn't even until he spotted another child that he stopped. She was someone he'd never seen before. His spade waved a little behind him in interest as he tilted his head. Once glance down to the fox and he was given permission to go.

Smiling Devan took his hat off and approached to her. His green eyes smiled at her. "Hello..." He chanced keeping his distance.

DS, the fox, moved toward the bench and laid down. She cast a glance at the man on it, suspecting him to be the parent. The look was not a pleasant one. Almost a glare from the animal.

The voice caused the sand she had been trying to sculpt to fall apart into a small heap beneath her hands. It was cause enough for anyone who had been concentrating to round and snap at the boy, but the girl only let out a soft "Oh. . ." of dismay before turning to face him. Despite the fact her work had been interrupted, she politely smiled for him. ". . .Hello. . ." she murmured. A long, serpentine tail emerged from beneath the folds of her skirt, and as she awaited his reply, she gently took hold of the feathered end and began wiping some of the sand off her hands with the soft protrusions.

Eilender watched the exchange from a distance, smiling. It was good to see his daughter become more social as of late, spurred on by his eldest girl's drive to get her out of the dreams the demon had escaped to. However, his musings apparently did not go unnoticed and he found himself glancing down at something that was glaring up at him. Unsettled, he rubbed the back of his head and addressed it. "Hello there. Fine day, isn't it?"

Devan felt a bit of guilt as the sand crumbled. He sat down on the ground and smiled at her tail as it snaked up. With a flush he held up his spade and gently it reached out to touch the tip of hers. "My name's Devan... Sorry I broke your sand." He began to push it forward to make a new sculpture for her.

The fox rolled her eyes at the man and gave a rough bark toward the boy. When he ignored her to smile at the girl she rolled her eyes once again. Moving over she let out a growl.

"Oh, sorry mom." He commented pulling off the necklace he handed it to her.

Taking it in her teeth she trotted back to the man and jumped onto the bench. Putting it on with her front paws she became a silver haired woman. She tugged on her black shirt and huffed. "Weather's cold." Was her cold response.

Eilender nodded, a swift wind causing him to shiver. "Indeed...it seems to grow stiffer every day. How are you weathering it?"

Mimosa shook her head and smiled, moving to help him. "It's. . .ok. My name. . .is Mimosa." Despite her slow demeanor the girl seemed to be proficient enough with the sand. Very delicately she began forming a little pillar, using the edges of her nails to make spirals in them before moving to the main bit he was working on.

The woman gave him another glare but her gaze was fixated on his child. Suspicious and scowling. "Fine. What's the brat's name?" She asked indicating the little girl.

Devan was clearly impressed by her show of dexterity . "Its nice to meet you." He began to help her work on the bit he was doing. He wasn't as good as she was but he was trying. "Um... I'm envy and patience."

The word 'brat' caused his usually polite nature to wane. He narrowed his eyes at the woman for a moment before turning his gaze to Mimosa. There they softened with a sort of fondness. "Mimosa, like the flower. It's called the sleeping grass, or the touch-me-not as well...I think it suits her."

Touching her horns gently, she smiled ruefully. "Sloth. . .and Patience, are my parents. But. . ." she turned and pointed at Eilender for a moment, "That's my papa. . ." She noticed he was watching then and turned back to the sandcastle, pushing the sand up and pressing it gently into a wall. "I have sisters. . .and one brother. Do you have siblings?"

DS snorted slightly and nodded. "Flower, huh? I know if it." She was watching intently as though she somehow expected the kid would go after hers. After a moment she was able to relax enough to close her eyes and put her ears forward instead. "His is Devan."

Devan glanced back and smiled at his mother then looked toward her. "That's my mom next to him. Um... I don't think so. I don't have anybody but me. Where are your siblings?" He asked looking around for them.

When the kid's name was offered, he decided to let the earlier comment go and smiled as he watched them build. "Nice name, he seems like a good enough kid, especially to have patience with Mimosa. She's sweet but is a bit slow...by nature, I mean. Her dad was Sloth, so I hear. Shame he's not around anymore - I've been told she looks just like him."

Mimosa laughed softly, poking a window into one of the pillars with her fingertip. "They're. . .with my other dad. My brother is with. . .Belle. She's older than me. . .she's really nice, and a. . .cow. . .kind of. . ."

DS reopened her eyes to glance at the other male. "What do you mean he's not 'around' anymore?" She rose an eyebrow at him. "I don't know or care what Devan resembles. He's staying away from that place."

Devan tilted his head, "Other dad? How can you have two? " He tried to picture what a cow sister would look like. He couldn't really come up with other then spots. "Neat... I wish I had siblings but mom doesn't like a lot of people."

It was awkward, having to explain it again. The question brought to mind how hurt Mimosa had looked when he'd first had to break the news that she would not be meeting her origin parent...either of them. "The sloth demon...at least the one Mimosa came from, passed away a while back. I'm not sure of the details but I think the letter we received was vague, to spare the children at least that. I haven't been back yet to the facility, but I'll have to..eventually. Mimosa can't be sheltered from them forever - and she needs more friends like her."

Mimosa arched a brow, surprised. "That. . .is sad. I would think she'd be lonely. . .Are you?" The question wasn't held in a judgmental tone, but rather in a way that suggested she had little practice in such things.

DS didn't seem to share the same empathy with his little girl. She just gave a hardened shrug. "I didn't think demons could die but that's interesting to know. I don't see why not The kids don't need friends to survive. That's the first piece of survival. Trust no one and you'll be fine. Foxes don't need friends."

Devan glanced secretly to his mother then back again. "I think she is...I think that's why she doesn't like a lot of people. She's kind of lonely so she doesn't want them around." He frowned, "Does that make sense?" At the last question he looked down more at the castle then at the girl. "Kind of. I don't get to play a lot with others."
