Ok, so this is very very, very rough. I just typed it up today. So criticize away. I sorely needs it.

"We"

We don't speak to each other anymore.

No one does. We discovered long ago that talking to each other is too hard. We are too different. We are bad for each other. So we changed society to make it easier to deal with each other; mainly by not dealing with each other at all. It's so much simpler that way.

I sit down at night at my personalized cognitive development system and learn about the world. I learn about science and literature and even history. I learn about times when “we” wasn't just a theory. We used to eat with each other, and live with each other and learn with each other. We used to travel together, and settle down together, and work together and buy things from each other. People sharing bathrooms and elevators and hallways and bedrooms. We don't have to do that anymore.

Everything comes to us now. Food, and goods are delivered by the automated services droids. Information is sent through the monitors and the Web 4.0. We work from home and eat at home and vote from home and have leisure from home. We are self contained biomes. We are safe.

Every five years the procreation management droids come and harvest unfertilized eggs and spermatozoa from us and take them away to the procreation development labs to be grown into the next generation, where they are raised by the development and nurture droids in their own personalized domicile pods that were left vacant by recently deceased individuals. We have no more population growth problems. No more hunger problems.

There is no more crime, no more war, no more hate. There are no more unwanted pregnancies or abortions. There are no betrayals, no murders, no acts of cruelty. If we are sick, the medical assistance droids come to us. The droids monitor our health and nutrition, our exercise and contentment levels. We are protected.

We realized however that while we could not handle each other, we also could not be alone. Every one of us has two to three personalized companion droids, specially tailored to our personalities to be our ideal friends. We are never lonely.

We are never unhappy.

We are never unwell.

We live our lives, self contained, not hurting anyone, not hurting each other.

I look at history and I wonder how odd it is, to feel joy at the birth of another person, or dismay at their death. As if another person should influence who we are. As if they had influence in our lives.

We don't have to worry about that anymore.

This is the way things are.

This is the way things should be.

We are a utopia.

Every man is an island.

i thought it was an interesting idea, and it was written well. The only real problem i have with it is on a philosophical level, since i can't really see how that would work. I don't really see people agreeing to this system, i don't really see people being able to handle it.

Of course, by the same token, no one saw television catching on, either.
I don't think you have to edit this too much. I really enjoyed it. But I saw this sort of as a prologue for something longer and more complicated, a piece of writing that's supposed to grab my interest initially. Have you thought of expanding on this?

I'm torn between expanding on it and not. I'm really not super happy with it being just this, but I worry that if I try to make it into a full length story that it might lose some of its charm. Not sure.

I'm glad you like it though.
