The air fresh, grass preened, and earth plush were all common symptoms of Woodhaven after a few days from rainfall. Every part of the habitat thrived, and flourished in the bountiful liquid that coated and seeped into every crevice. In turn this provided the perfect time to go out and reap the fruits of the land. After all, you had to give a few days for the rain to take effect. Lova was quite aware of this fact, and had been waiting to go out and about since that heavy fall. The possibilities of what she may find filled her mind, and caused for a little flutter of excitement to quiver just thinking about it.
Scampering along the damp ground, the petite mouse went about her usual routine, hitting around her checkpoints that usually held what she would harvest, and tend to. A few sprouting flowers near the old oaks roots, the usual place that suckling mushrooms popped up; more so near the fallen trunks, and the occasional climbing of tree's to investigate the status of budding berries or nuts. With Spring still only in the beginning stages, Lova knew to pick carefully, and conservatively; not that she didn't already. She never took more than she needed, unless it was winter of course. But with Winter passing, it was time to make way for the new life, and plenty of other Woodhaven inhabitants would be wanting to collect what they could, so that was certainly taken into consideration. That was her nature, of course. Always thinking of others before herself.
First stop, the great oak. It was surrounded by the long uniform strips of what were to home tulips and daffodils. They were her favorite flowers, and she greatly enjoyed looking along their stages of growth, fawning at their beauty and height. Stopping right before a little collection, the mouse simply sat to gaze up along the green blades, sighing wistfully to herself. Extending a slim arm to place a tiny paw on the edge, thumb tenderly stroking along the grain, Lova pondered to herself of what colours may sprout from the bulbs soon-to-be. After a few moments of admiring, she pushed her satchel to rest on her back, and headed towards the trunk of the oak tree in search of any hidden herbs that might be a little bonus in her expedition. Never could have too many herbs for tea and medicine.

Quinn wasn’t a fan of falling water. He hated rain, he hated the wind that threw the rain into his face, he hated the way the sky growled and snarled and shot fangs at him like it wanted nothing more than to swallow him up. He absolutely couldn’t tolerate such strong storms, and with a right justified passion, too; it wasn’t very fair of Mother Nature to go about washing away his latest attempt at a shelter, and even crueler of her to be so brutal about it! Why, the little spotted mouse nearly found himself swept away by gurgling, muddy water, saving himself with quick wit (and a great deal of luck) when his tail snagged a root and he was presented with the opportunity to shimmy up a stalwart old oak. He had darted as quickly as his sopping paws would let him up to the nearest branch, worked his way into an abandoned woodpecker’s hole, and had yet to find reason enough to leave. He’d nearly had it up to his whiskers with errant weather, and had been in a rough sort of mood, questioning for the first time since he laid paws on the trail if he was truly the traveling sort.
He’d never be dry again, ever. Not after that great mess of a storm what knocked about his addled mind and tried to chase him back home. But the woodpecker hole wasn’t a bad place, per se, and was roomy enough for him to set up his weary paws for a spell and work on something besides wearing his soles thin; he could spend as much time as he pleased wringing his fur dry and scratching at splinters of wood with his little carving knife, or picking out possible travel routes from a rather nice vantage point. It was relaxing, a nice bane that worked his temper into something somewhat proper over a period of a few days, and with the sun finally willing to grace the world with its presence he found he rather liked lazing about under its rays. No need to even leave the oak - which was good, considering it was a mighty distance down.
Today he was taking in the niceties of the springtime weather, trying to dry his vest and leggings, attempting to pick out a shape from a particularly unruly slab of oak wood. He hummed to himself as he worked, deft little fingers feeling out the grain and twist of the wood, brow knitting and tongue stuck out thte side of his mouth. Every so often he’d reach into a pocket and pull out a fistful of collected nuts, popping them into his mouth and chewing slowly out of consideration for his stores. He didn’t have an infinite amount of foodstuffs left, anyways, but he wasn’t particularly bothered - he couldn’t be bothered, really, not when he was content where he was.
But then, his carving knife hit a snag - the wood in his paws took on a life of his own and bucked itself away as the very tip pierced Quinn’s old gloves. With a rumbling squeak Quinn tossed his latest creation to the side, much more preoccupied with finding a place for his knife than with its incredible aerodinamic abilities. “Blast it all, ye dang dagger!” he cried, pulling off his glove and sticking a pricked digit into his mouth.
Meanwhile, a half-finished wooden flower found itself hurtling to the earth toward its living bretheren; it rattled off the oak’s slabby sides, made a fine arc off a root, and settled itself into the loamy grass with a satisfying thud. Quinn crawled to the edge of the branch and looked out despairingly, not at all wanting to start again yet not quite able to find where it landed.
Wonderful.

Pushing aside a few stiff weed stalks, and inspecting the occasional root from time to time, the diligent female pricked her round ears to an alert position as her eyes caught to a rather peculiar looking sproutling, strategically hidden in the nook of one of the large mighty roots. But not hidden well enough for the sharp eyes of the skillful gardener. Kneeling down to get closer, cupped paws gingerly holding under the beginnings of a precious treasure just taking it's first few breaths above ground. The leaves were so tender and a bright green hue, sure to be a hardy and elegant herb once fully grown. What exactly was it, Lova wasn't sure. She herself was still a bit of a beginner at the whole identifying matter, and mostly knew the more common plants. But that only made it all the more fun to figure out what it was!
Checking the soil, patting it down a, and setting up a little shield made of broken twig pieces, Lova went about to do her best to try and give this baby herb a chance at life. The rabbits could be a bit greedy from time to time, or perhaps a lazy and ignorant beetle, so precautions weren't a bad idea. She too allowed herself a soft and cheery hum to sound, an Celtic themed tune in fact, creating a barricade neatly around the petite sprout. That ought to do it! Satisfied with her work, the Siamese print mouse went on her way to continue her scavenging, her hum becoming a bit more comfortable with the safety of her current setting. But it didn't last long as she heard something clatter and clank against the trunk above her, causing her head to lift up immediately, tail perking, as well as her ears, in alarm. Eyes widening, she spied the object hurtling down from the heavens, performing and impressive descend, eventually sliding down the slick root to stab into the ground. Squeaking in surprise, Lova jumped back and scrambled to hide under one of the lifted roots, curling up tightly for fear there might be bandits, or thieve about. She had hardly anything worth stealing, aside from the few seeds and mushroom slices stashed in her satchel. Arms wrapped over her head, ears flattened against her skull, tail wrapped firmly around her curls figure, breathing shallowly. Please don't find me, please don't find me, please don't find me...!

Bolting up the tree might have been a breeze when his life was in danger, but picking his way down? Quinn had never tried anything quite so dangerous in his life (nearly drowning aside), digging his claws into rough bark and doing his darndest to keep from taking the quick way down. Oak might not have been particularly good for climbing, and Quinn might not have been particularly good at not panicking every time his eyes wandered to see just how far he had left to go, but if he took it slow enough…
Oh, bother it all. Climbing was for the squirrels.
That being said, Quinn predictably looked more like a fool and less like a mountain climber as he scrabbled, slid, and fought his way down, and suffered at the least three terrible frights when his footpaws decided to do a bit of freefalling the last few feet down the trunk. Gravity and sore toes decided to team up and toss the spotted mouse to the blessedly soft grass below, bunching him up and rolling him comically a bit before deciding his pride and bottom had been injured enough. “Lands alive!” Quinn wailed, clutching at his bruised noggin and pawing at the sky with his back feet - nearly upside-down, he was, and less than grateful for it. “Buncha-bleedin’-what for- Uuuugh!”
He wasn’t dead, but that was only a small relief; it took a moment for him to find the ground again, and the moment he stood he found the earth had done a bit of a tilt. He stumbled sideways, hopped a bit, and stopped the world from spinning with a stomp of his paw, shuffling through the new grass with no care for its young age or any of its delicacy. Not really appreciatin’ this whole suffering thing, he thought bitterly, avoiding a small blockade of twigs without any curiosity and waddling off to where he figured the carving might have landed. “Now where are you hidin’ yerself…?” he grumbled, readjusting his bandanna and squinting at the ground about him. “I know ye’r around here somewhere…”
The carving had… been the very last of his concerns, really, and so he hadn’t the slightest clue as to where it actually was. But he wasn’t gonna just give up on it, not after all that time spent fighting with it, and wandering closer to the oak’s roots he began pushing blades of grass around hopefully. It should still be sorta near the tree, yeah…? Yeah, should be. Or it’s gone an’ run off without me, ungrateful thing…

As the frightened Lova huddled tightly under her safe haven of the thick root, her ears twirked at the sound of some sort of... scratching, and scritching. Some sort of disturbance to the old oaks trunk. The unidentified objects owner must be diving down to retrieve what ever sort of weapon had been thrown, and to find it's target!
Pressing her lips together to keep from making any sound, her tail tip quivered nervously, the sound of someone lowering to the ground growing louder and more aggressive. It wasn't until until she heard a rather prolonged scrape against the bark that made her ears perk and eyes flip open. Followed by the scraping, the sound of impact to the plush grass took it's turn. Had... had they fallen? By what she heard it only sounded to be one individual... It wasn't very usual for a thief or assassin to fall from a tree. They were usually quite stealthy, agile, and skillful with the ways of scurrying up and down a tree... or anything for that matter! It was when she reached this path of her thoughts that she perked at hearing a voice. A voice! And it sounded quite rough and rugged. The words broken and laced with heavy molasses-like slang. Hopefully they were merciful not to harm the baby herb.. it'd just began it's life!
The steps were growing closer, the voice reaching her ears clearer. Bright sapphire eyes watched the green roots bow and sway as they were parted through, whom ever the mystery character was making their way towards her place of safety. It was male, at least, she thought so... the voice was deep, and held a strong baritone vibrato. And they seemed... to be looking for her! The words he uttered... he was searching to finish her, or see if he had managed to wound her! She was done for! the small carved wooden knife for produce harvesting wouldn't even save her now! Not that she'd know how to fight with it to begin with... In all her nervousness of the whole ordeal, a strand of grass managed to bend from a lazy wind bumbling by, causing it to slooowlllyy lower and graze the skittish rodents backside, making her gasp sharply, and her whole body tense. But her paws flew to her mouth to cover it quickly, every nerve standing on end... each strand of fur as well! Oh no!

“Where are ye, me little flower? Eh? Where’d ye go? Dangit, if this grass ain’t an absolute bother…!”
How fast did grass grow, anyways? Seemed as though great lengths of it had sprouted from near nowhere, outta the ground like it had somewhere important to be now that the rains had gone and past. It felt awkward and ticklish against the bottoms of his bare paws, and moved against his knees as though to hold him back from his hunt, thick enough to slow him down and forcing him into a high-stepped march. He stomped about, ears folded back, whiskers bristled, pushing about grass stalks and mumbling to himself - trying to snake-charm the carving back into his paws, it seemed, though he was failing in a wonderful way. No matter how much he grumbled, kicked, or whined, the carving remained silent and hidden… prob’ly on purpose, just to mess with his head or something.
After a while, it became apparent that two-legged searching just wasn’t cutting the cake. Makin’ me crawl through the dirt like a moley, this is right ridiculous, I’m just going outta my way fer a lotta nothing… All kinds of bitter thoughts swarmed through his head as he lowered himself onto all fours, nose twitching to see if perhaps he could scent out the thing. But everything smelled like wet, and flowers! So many flowers… not that he minded them, particularly, but it was getting to be a chore searching about without damaging any of them. Quinn wandered his way through the grass, squinting about and feeling very grumpy indeed. Perhaps, by some odd stroke of luck, his carving had landed somewhere near the roots? Mmm, perhaps not - he had done a nice tuck-and-roll after falling a bit himself, and so he figured the carving would have, too? He didn’t need to investigate the roots, and was almost ready to pass them by, until, perhaps by a trick of the wind, he imagined he heard a small sound.
A gasp? Or the wind passing through an arc in the roots? Or…
His ears flicked straight out, his head poked up above the tall grass, and frowning a bit, Quinn crept forward with his thoughts on where he had stashed his carving knife. Might not have been such a great weapon, sure, but then, he didn’t know if he was facing any real threat or not.
Quietly and ever so carefully, Quinn snuck his way toward the roots. Not a sound. He scrabbled up the side of one, shimmied down another, climbed a third, and stuck his nose into a crevace. Nothing there. “Mebbe I’m just hearin’ things…” he warned himself, sliding onto his belly and trying to convince himself that he didn’t have time to be chasing phantom sounds.
Still, he might as well check the little crevace right below him. He swung himself to the ground, dusted off his leggings, and crouched down to see if perhaps his little phantom was stuck up in the smallest of crevaces to be found.
Well now, this weren’t no phantom at all! There, tucked away and cringing as though Quinn was some sort of deadly brighand, was a small, shivering ball of crème fur. The wide, reflecting blue eyes of a little mousemaid regarded him with the same amount of terror one usually reserved for hawks or wildcats, little paws covering her mouth and body in such a tense way that it seemed she’d turned nearly to stone. How had she managed to get herself in there, anyways? “Ey, missie,” he began hesitantly, a bit of concern twitching his whiskers. “Wotcha doin’ all scrunched up in there? Somethin’ scary roamin’ about?”
He never thought for a second that he could have been the cause of her fear - after all, he’d yet to scare anything in a decent way, and admitted he wasn’t really the intimidating type. But the poor lass, she seemed ready to cry out! So he flopped onto his backside, gave the surroundings a quick scan, and continued, “Ain’t nothin’ out here wot’ll try an’ eatcha, I don’t think. You alright, missie?”

Oh no... oh no... oh no.... I-I'm done for....! Her mind repeated over and over, little heart pattering loudly in her ears, frantically pumping against her fragile ribcage. She would meet her doom to the paw, or claw, of a bloodthirsty road bandit! Of course... her imagination was a bit over stimulated due to the many folk lores her father would tell her as a child, the few occasions he was around. All the warnings and precautions he would preach and lecture, preparing her for the worst that could come... and if he weren't around to make sure things went smoothly. Unfortunately Lova simply wasn't built nor born to be aggressive or a fighter of any kind! She just didn't have it in her. Not like her father who was one of the toughest, burly mice she'd ever seen! Her slim and sleek little physique was more useful for agility, racing and weaving through obstacles that could easily clip a tail, or n** an ear. It certainly came in handy for sticky situations, but in this case, there wasn't much running she could do. It'd give away her location immediately Thankfully there were the thick winding roots. But who knew how long these would shield her from the mystery mugger.
Maybe he would find his precious weapon of choice... and over look the cranny she'd wiggled her way into. Pressing herself closer into the groove, hoping her soft toned fur would help to conceal her identity, Lova could only listen intently to the shuffles, hisses, and cracking of greens, twigs and littered elder leaves. He was getting closer... his voice growing louder, as well as the blood coursing through the thin veins branched out through her thin opaque ears. It was almost blocking her ability to listen for her doom to approach, sounding more like a death march than anything else at this point. What she could pick up on were the sounds of scratching from claws gripping and pushing off, and the 'sft' of a softer material rubbing against the tangled roots. Honing in on the voice, ears swiveling to follow each thump, or thud of the body landing from root to root, and finally...
....he was here. The sounds of movement halted, and a scent was now in range to pick up on, her whiskers and nose twitching frantically. And there! Finally a figure to fit the image she'd already concocted... which was far more crude than the actual character. Right off the bat, he was a mouse. A weathered looking fello, at that. He certainly fit the bill of a bandit; the bandanna wrapped along his forehead, the loose fitting trousers, and protective thick gloves... but his approach was far different from what one would expect. In fact... he seemed oblivious to what terror he'd caused. Blinking a few times, Lova began to relax to a small degree, eyes staying trained on him. Not really ready for anything, but ready for an attack or strike of sorts. Was he the only one? She couldn't tell from her position, but the noises seemed to cease once he'd revealed himself... but they could be concealed elsewhere...
Strangely, this gent's demenor didn't seem cynical, or ill-minded... and his lax behavior only added to the appeal that he just might not be the enemy. Once he flopped carelessly onto his back, Lova's round ears perking straight up to their fully expanded position, only then did the meek little female find the comfort to crawl a few paces forward, enough to peek out from under the roots safety. Sniffing curiously at him, eyes darting around the vicinity, she took a few more hesitant pawsteps forward and out of the roots embrace. Standing onto her hind quarters slowly, tiny paws huddled to her chest, Lova looked about the area nervously, eyes shooting every which way. She couldn't very well just ask if he was going to mug her... perhaps it would be best just to keep quiet... but that would be rude. Conflict! Eventually she managed a small shake of her head, and timid smile, "I-I'm.. fine, sir... was... just a small fright, is all..." her soft voice spoke in a tender fashion.

This maid was a proper timid sort of mouse - very cautious, very careful, never taking her eyes off Quinn as she made the decidion between keeping concealed and stepping out of her nook. She seemed to be of the mindset that whatever had frightened her up into the roots might still be around, waiting to snatch her up and swallow her whole, but to Quinn that seemed a little silly; he had been waffling about for a while now, and hadn’t seen a thing beyond his own two paws! There were no scarybeasts running about and making havoc, and even if there were… yeah, Quinn could take ‘em. He’d show them a what for with a good fist or such, if they wanted to eat up little mice.
Still, he thought her comment was very funny. Snrk. “A small fright, miss?” he said with a grin, remaining quite placid as she crawled from her hole. “Heavens, what’re ya like when a big fright shakes its paws in yer face? Ye’d have a proper ‘eart attack, eh?”
And so he chuckled a little, but not too cruelly; being cautious wasn’t such an awful thing, though it gave him a little amusement, and supposing there had been actual danger before he had climbed down his tree… well, he’d be right foolish to make fun of her for anything. Even though he had gone and told her no worries were to be had she still seemed very on edge, peering about and watching Quinn carefully (as though he was some sort of ruffian, really), and she spoke so very softly! “No need ta be so very shy, missie, I ain’t gonna hurt you any,” he assured her, quite fine with remaining on his backside if it meant she wouldn’t startle or bolt away. He hadn’t had much conversation lately, and it’d be a crying shame to scare her off now. “An’ anything out here what would try ta hurt ya? It’d have at come through me, first!”

Whilst observing her surroundings, her ears wavered nervously, occasionally glancing to this new company of hers. His lax nature indeed was comforting, but she still was unsure if it was safe to be completely relaxed. The air still held the same scents from before, with his added cologne, so perhaps... there was nothing to fret over. Her ears pricked up as he spoke, letting her round bright eyes roll over to him, a soft flush warming on her cheeks, the red tinting her fur in embarrassment. Perhaps she was acting foolish, and a bit silly. But it was just natural instinct, after all. It was in that moment that she realized she needed to truly let go of her uncertainty. It wasn't right to accuse anyone of anything if they hadn't been seen in the act, or if there was any evidence of an ill-minded intention.
Petite figure finally calming, the muscles untensing, Lova gave a more sincere light smile to this new fello. Tiny paws clutching to the strap of her satchel, she bowed her head slightly, "I'm sorry.. I thought I might have been.. under siege.. something had fallen from the sky, so it would seem.." in saying so, her eyes casted upwards just to double check... but all was well and calm in the northern regions. Perhaps these two phenomenas weren't related at all. Letting her mind lead in that path, she allowed her head to rise slightly and inspect the male curiously. He certainly seemed to be a seasoned... well, she wasn't sure. Perhaps an explorer? Or a traveler of sorts? Either way, his laid-back front was allowing her to reside back to her more friendly and welcoming nature. Even a soft giggle managed to trickle from her lips at his fearless behavior, causing a little paw to clasp at her mouth and the blush warm just a notch, "I must thank you then, good sir... for I'm not very strong myself.." but this did cause her to look about their perimeter again... where had he come from?

Aah, that was more like it! Finally the little crème mouse seemed to believe all was good, and though she relaxed only marginally, it was a nice start. Perhaps it was just a part of her personality that kept her fidgetting with the bag she kept over her shoulder (what a curious little bag it was!), or perhaps she really did think she had a reason to worry - either way, it was quite nice to see her smile. “Naw, no seigin’ goin’ on today,” He smiled right back, mildly looking about as she did.
And then, suddenly…
In a rush of fabric and fur Quinn bounded straight to his feet, whiskers flaired and eyes bolt-open. “FROM THE SKY?!” he cried, a paw reaching up to grasp his bandanna as both his ears swiveled forward violently. “That thing what fell from the sky, did ye - did ye happen ta catch where it landed? Ooh, please say ye did!”
Maybe all wasn’t lost! It might be possible that she had seen his misguided carving before she had holed herself away, and perhaps - perhaps she could lead him to it! In his excitement he nearly ran off again, hopping from paw to paw anxiously, and looking between the mousemaid and the expanse of grass beyond them. Take that, ye spiteful hunk of wood! He wanted to push the mousmaid into action, hurry her up a bit, and get that carving back between his fingers where it belonged, and where he could finish it and just be done with the whole thing!
But then, in the midst of his animation, he realized he was being a bit brash. And loud, too, which mustn’t have been very appealing to his meek little accquaintance. He forced himself into a shuddery stand-still, grinning apologetically and trying his hardest to explain: “I was up in this oak, y’see, fer a few days, an’ was wiling away the time by carving - but not more’n a few minutes ago the blasted thing slipped between me paws an’ came crashin’ ta Earth! I’d be in yer debt if ye could help me find it, missie. Why, if that’s the reason ye hid away in the roots… I am sorry, I am!”

Well he certainly was a friendly fello. With this new approach, Lova's shy little smile shone through genuinely, nodding to him in response. Indeed all seemed well around them. The wind held only scents of the damp forest, and their own unique perfumes. Perhaps it had just been a piece of bark that managed to dislodge from the trunk and plummeted to the ground. Either way, this male was no one to fear, that much she could see now.
But it didn't take much for her demeanor to back-track at his sudden boisterous behavior. It started with him jumping up, making her do so as well; at a much smaller degree, her ears flaring to their maximum capacity in alarm, tail straight up. At the power and force of his voice, she flinched and cowered slightly, the 180 change to his personality causing her paws to cling to the strap of her satchel, taking a few steps back nervously. What... what was going on? Her own eyes widened as well, if that were even possible, smooth brows furrowing with confusion. He seemed so fired up about this... unknown object that could not be named. Was it something of value to him? Perhaps a treasure of sorts, or a family heirloom? By the way he was acting, it must have been dear to him... for she felt like retreating back to her hideaway behind her. Though he seemed hopeful and desperate for her knowledge on this item of choice, the frightened Lova gave a hesitant shake to her head, not having a clue as to where it could be. After all, she had scampered to safety as soon as it had pieced through the air, and the sound had reached her sensitive ears. "I-I-I'm sorry... I... I don't... know...." the timid female murmured, voice tender and shakey.
It was almost as if a wave of wind had rolled through his fur, and calmed his stormy sea like disposition, resorting back to his former behavior... which again caused uncertainty in the dainty femme. Was she not supposed to know of the trinket that was lost? As more questions began to fill her mind, eyes darting down to the ground to search the soil for untold answers, an ear flicked upon hearing the husky voice starting again, making the deep ocean blue glowers flip up to his figure again, to pay her attention to him fully... and hopefully get answers as to what was going on!
Ahhh.... So that's what the deal was. A sigh of relief eased through her lips once the explanation was laid down. It was nothing to be frightened of at all! Noting this fact made her giggle very, VERY faintly to herself, shaking her head at her silliness for being so on guard about the situation. Paws laxing on the strap, she smiled to him, and slowly glanced towards where she thought she might have seen it land... When she'd ran from its descent, it had landed behind her... perhaps in the taller grasses sticking up behind Quinn? With a dismissive shake of her head, her tail curled into an 'S' formation, finally comfortable with this situation, "It's alright.. I'm.. not positive of the location of it... but... it landed somewhere over there, I believe.." lifting her paw, she pointed a finger to the opposite way that the male was facing.
