I'm having a letter to the editor published (tomorrow, I think) in response to a woman claiming that wind power is harmful to humans and birds. I'm not an expert on the subject, but you cannot convince me that a windmill is more harmful than burning fossil fuels. My pet birds know enough not to fly into me, I'm sure they would miss a huge-a** turbine. I'm convinced most "reasons" for not going with wind power are petroleum industry propaganda, but that's just my crazy treehugging self.
So, I was curious what you guys thought, what you think of wind power as far as cost-effectiveness.

I've heard some very reasonable concerns about birds flying into propellors (I agree that it's better than the detrimental effects of fossil fuels-- but it's still a problem); however there *may* be a solution:

That looks like something close to a perfect solution.

Yeah, I should have mentioned *why* birds fly into turbines--it's if they're spinning so fast you can't see them--but because they can be built so birds can't fly into them, or at least can see the blades better, it shouldn't be an issue. Even so, birds are much more likely to fly into windows (even though there are far more windows than windmills out there).

Well they are having the same talks about water turbines (seamills). Someone got the bright idea to put a windmill under water since water tends to more powerful then wind. Then some people got up to talking about fish getting hit may the blades. If they ever seen the turbines they would have seen that the blades move so slow that it'll be hard to get hit by one. And even if one did the force of the water will push them out of the way of the blade.

I just think its all propaganda by the oil people. Just like they started all that propaganda with energy cars and fule cells. Hey, the army has beem using fule cells for about 20yrs, and if its good enough for them its good enough for me.

i was jsut thinking, with a bit of backyard tinkering, why not have a huge arsed cage around the whole propellor attached to main hub, then birds will fly into the cage and bounce off, instead of hitting the blades, and if you want to put it sarcastically, its only natural selection that the birds "stupid" enough will fly into the propellors and get killed, its a natural instinct to dodge solid objects as they come for you....

Wind power isn't much of an energy source, sure its renewable but its not much comapred to other, better ways of making energy. As for the birds... thats rather odd though it makes sense. If you put a cage around the mill you can block air and create unneccassry wind channels through small spaces, as it would need to be a cage with very small opening so that birds could not fly through it.

bleh, i was thiking chicken wire, which is thin, and small holed, so there wont be much resistance or air directional change...

There are just some dumb people out there who like to argue anything because they don't understand it. And besides, what type of bird is that slow?

Have you ever tryed to cache a bird? Ther are fast with some fast reflexes. The windows to my house is more of a treat to them than windmills. How many times have seen or heard a bird flying into your window? And that's not even I moving objuct. lol

Wind power seems like a good idea. I've heard other reasons that people don't want it besides the bird issue and greed. I read in either Sierra or Discover magazine that people in the Northeast US along the coast don't want windmills put in the ocean because it will ruin the view. This is near Martha's Vinyard, I believe, and other high end home areas.

People are seriously concerned about slow moving underwater windmills hitting fish? The insane fishing industry (there are less fish...so let's get better technology and catch even more of them!) is much more of a hazard to fish than windmills could ever be.

Then there are issues with power companies being stubborn and slightly idiotic. I live in one of the states that the power company doesn't pay you for energy produced by home windmills or solar panels, so that it's prohibitively expensive for most people to have these (doesn't help that I live in a relatively poor state as well).
