Today had been unusual in that it was quiet. Cas had risen early, flitted about with the other Slaves getting the first chores of the morning out of the way, and had soon been sent out much further north than was normal for a Slave, to bury some carcass a Sister had forgotten about a few days prior. Not all that exciting, or appealing, but with it came kind of a nice change of pace for the golden-eyed male; going far out into the territory felt both safe and novel, and spending so many hours with only his own company lent a thoughtful, meditative air to the whole endeavor.
Afternoon was just beginning to darken into evening as he made his way back into the more often-traversed section of his packlands, and he was calm and tired, and slightly matted with dirt from a day of excavation and burial. He peered about the territory, mildly curious as to what he'd missed in his day abroad.

 Taiyou had been silent these past few days. She'd been devastated after Varia had ruthlessly destroyed the male she'd been flirting with. She'd just stood there and watched. Whenever she thought of the ghastly scene she had to restrain a sob that tried to escape her. She'd done her usual duties to the best of her ability, but ti was obvious she was troubled.
She was sulking a little ways outside of the camp, laying curled up in a small sort of glen she'd found. It wasn't secret, but it was at least semi private. The tip of her tail was resting on her nose and her eyes looked blank. She was trying to forget about what had happened, but it didn't help she was alone with her thoughts.

Now what was that there, that gleam of white? Lowering his head, Casimir began to amble his way nearer, his wide paws careful to make their way silently over the dry earth. It wouldn't do to spook some Sister out of a nap and get his ears bitten off. But coming closer, he soon made out the identity of the curled up wolf - Taiyou! Oh pitter-patter of hearts, that lovely girl. Slinking over, he wagged his tail endearingly until it registered that she was not quite all right; his fuzzy head tilted. "Scuse me, Sister," he butted in politely, "are you all right?"

At first Taiyou didn't stir when the familiar scent of Cas reached her nose. Her ear flicked a little and she gradually realized the light was being blocked by his large bulk. She blinked and looked up at him, but didn't stand or greet him with her usual cheerfulness. "Oh...Hi Cas." She mumbles, her head resting on her paws. She wasn't very responsive, but now that he was here she fiercely wanted his company. Someone warm and solid to make the unpleasant thoughts go away.

Gloomy delivery or not, Cas couldn't keep from smiling at the fact that Taiyou had called him by a nickname. "Hi, Taiyou." - Another big smile, at his own lack of formality. He sat politely down in front of her, his face open and attentive, and began making it his business to figure out why she looked so glum. "Pardon me for asking, but...what's got you so down?"

Taiyou blinked at him slowly, considering what to say. Then she got to her paws and went forward a few steps. Silently she buried her face against his chest and settled back down, breathing in his scent and relaxing. "Varia...Took something from me..." She mumbles muffledly against him, her ears flattening at the thought.

Cas stiffened, and then tried to relax as Taiyou curled up against him. It was lucky her face was pressed against his chest, or she would surely have noticed how wide his eyes were, his dilated pupils. "Oh," he coughed, his chin hovering above her head, considering its options, "I'm very sorry to hear that." He shut his mouth and held very still, taking a few moments to fully process what she'd said, and what she must still be withholding...and another few moments to try and wrangle his mouth into working order. He had suddenly thought of a few completely inappropriate things to say, and was not entirely confident they would not burst forth in place of a consolation. "M-maybe I can find a replacement for you, Sister," he offered, gazing up into the branches and trying not to notice so intently Taiyou's breath against his neck.

Taiyou stayed snuggled up to him for a few moments, noticing how he'd stiffened. Sometimes she hated this pack and how she couldn't even brush by a male without having them freak out. Her shoulders tensed a little and she bit her lip hard enough to draw blood. She restrained the wild urge to cry, though tears did p***k her eyes. After another few minutes she'd calmed down enough to answer him, with a rueful laugh. She was still pressed against him firmly and didn't really seem to want to move anytime soon. "Maybe..." She says wistfully. He couldn't have known that Varia had killed the male she'd been spending time with. Unless she'd went around and spreading the news, which she didn't think was true.

She was so upset, and so close, Cas still had to fight not to go completely beside himself. But her sadness was winning out over her breach of conduct; finding himself moved by her tears, the hurt written so brightly on her face, he allowed himself to plant his nose in a comforting little kiss at the top of her head, sincere and awkward. He didn't know what could have happened to upset her so, but he had already immersed himself in her unhappiness and felt a compelling desire to fix it. And also, secondarily, to keep her this close to him. "What can I do to make you feel better?" He asked, earnestly.

Taiyou's shoulders slumped at the kiss and she relaxed slightly. It helped to alleviate some of the pain, but not all. She closed her eyes and breathed in deeply, shivering a little since he was very close, and also very male. She leaned her muzzle up a little and met her nose with his, returning the awkward little kiss before she snuggled against him again. "Just...Stay with me for awhile..." She says softly.

He swore he felt the hair on the back of his neck rise...being raised in a spartan culture, as a celibate slave did not get a wolf accustomed to much physical touch of any kind. And a kiss on the mouth from Taiyou, no less, struck him like an electric shock. He knew what he was doing was wrong, or at least aberrant, but he found he had no desire to do anything to fix it. "All right," he said quietly, resting his chin behind her ear and watching the swirl of thoughts spin through his head.

She relaxed more, comforted by his presence. he was solid and there, and didn't pull back from her touch. She needed this. "Thank you..." She mumbles and scoots a little closer to him. She'd get over the male she'd been with destroyed in front of her eyes, but it would take awhile. It helped to have someone here though. She licked his chest a little and fully closed her eyes. She was beginning to feel a little drowsy.

He realized, belatedly, that she must be able to hear how fast his heart was thumping; he felt his face get hot, and found himself grateful for her not mentioning it. She seemed to have calmed a little now, and the specifics of what might have shaken her so badly had already fluttered from his mind, to be replaced with wonderment at the fine golden lines along her face and back, the delicate articulation of her paws. She was drifting off, it seemed, and it made him feel peculiarly protective, as if it wouldn't be absurd for him to keep watch over her against any sort of danger. He took a deep breath, fighting off another swell of nerves, and settled in for the long haul.

Taiyou did hear his heart, but she didn't mind. It just meant he was alive and not torn apart like the last male she'd been with. She sighed quietly and closed her eyes. She slid down until she was laying on her side, her head pressed up against his belly. Her breathing began to even out as she relaxed more. She blissfully drifted off into sleep, still snuggled up against his warm body. She was completely defenseless right now and trusting him.

She had drifted off to sleep, which was all well and good, but it left Cas in a position much more difficult to ignore the woefully inappropriate nature of his situation. Blinking, he felt his thoughts tug one way and then the other: nerves would coil up in his limbs, prepared to spring away from this breach of conduct, but he would take a deep breath and be freshly captivated by the lines of her mouth, the arc of whiskers and the long, graceful line of her muzzle. She wasn't the first beautiful wolf he had seen, no...but she was the first he had been allowed to look at. His nose dipped downward and the thought, for the first time in words, I want to kiss her. And he felt his heart clench, and thought, What am I supposed to do with that?
He had no idea. So, he laid with his head poised above her shoulder, listening dutifully for the sounds of any wandering pack members and feeling his heart sweetly tear open down the center. It wasn't until nearly all the evening light had been bled from the sky that he began to feel too nervous to be comfortable, and after nearly a quarter of an hour's internal debate he finally mustered up the nerve to nuzzle gently at Taiyou's cheek, his wary eyes trained on her face.
