The new Queen of the Swamp had been busy since taking the throne...almost literally taking it, not that anyone but a select few knew about her involvement in her brother Jhonki-sahna's banishment. Of course, it probably wasn't exceedingly difficult to put the pieces together, given that it came only a few days after her return. Well, whatever anyone guessed or thought, she was ruler now, and she was going to see to it that her pride thrived.
La'u Khara'i was planning on making herself the next Asali'jua - except for the becoming-a-goddess part, anyway. That wasn't going to happen. But she would make sure her home was safe, screen out any unwanted elements, and be beloved by all. Or something like that.
It was hard work, wriggling your way into power, interviewing would-be members, and dealing with the day-to-day business of tending to a pride, and the young lioness was taking a break this evening and enjoying a leisurely stroll through her lands. Oh yes, life was going well for now, certainly much better than it was going for her older brother, or her nieces and nephews, or her father. That last one she did feel a little sorry about that - poor Narindima'moyo, losing his first grandchildren. Still, it wasn't her fault, it was Jhonki's! All she'd done was expose him and his aberration of a mate.
Yuck.

Ninon wasn't sure whether to be saddened or disgusted by the newest happenings. On one paw, poor Narindima'moyo lost a son and grandcubs, and a group of young ones paid the price for their parents' folly. On the other...while she held no hatred for hybrids, their blood did not belong in this place. Ever. There was a reason, she believed, that they were rendered infertile for the most part.
The lioness made her way out of the water after a nice swim, currently thankful for the small break from her cubs. Though she loved them dearly...raising five rambunctious (or anti-social, or mud-phobic) boys who happened to be seers as well was...exhausting. It made her VERY glad she had friends in the pride and a returned son who didn't mind looking after his brothers while she took a breather. Pale blue-violet caught her eye, and she smiled slightly. She recognized the new queen, had seen her grow up some, and had not yet had a chance to speak with her. Perhaps it was time.
She padded over, used to the swamps enough at this point that she moved through it like anyone born there. "Queen La'u Khara'i." She dipped her head in a bow. "May the spirits keep their blessing upon you."

There was a certain advantage to being such a 'strange' color, or what had long ago been a strange color here - she was hard to miss! There was no blending in for Khara, ever, which on one hand suited her very much, though truth be told she'd have preferred to be more...traditionally-colored. It saddened her a little to not look like a swamp lion of old, though she had at least inherited the shoulder marking that ran in the royal family. It was something.
Raising her head, the adolescent smiled graciously when an older lioness approached and greeted her. She was doing her best to act like a queen, and while it wasn't painfully obvious, it wasn't entirely subtle, either; she was young, pretending to be old, and there was an inherent amount of awkwardness in that no matter how good one might be at it.
"And upon you, Ninon," she responded with a nod. There was some hesitation as she recalled the other's name, and she really hoped she'd gotten it right. Getting it wrong would look worse than having to ask. "I trust you're well?"

Ninon wasn't really phased by the youth of the other lioness, and the bit of awkwardness that came with it. Everyone started out young. Even she, lady-like lioness she was, had once been awkward in her attempts to be 'grown up'. Khara would grow into it. It was a start that the young Queen remember her name.
"I am, indeed. My oldest son is watching his brothers while I get a little time away. And you?" Ninon didn't think ill of Khara, but there were bound to be one or two who might try making her life difficult. Hopefully they didn't cause too many problems. The pride didn't need more turmoil.

Haha, got it right! Feeling quite proud of ehrself for that small victory, Khara's smile widened. She was a long way away from remembering absolutely everyone's names - especially in a pride where changing one's name was required.
"As well as can be expected," she answered, making only passing reference to recent happenings. "And your family? Soon they'll be old enough to go out, won't they?"

"That's good." It really was. That the new Queen was doing well so far, despite her age and the circumstances, was a good sign. Ninon nodded at Khara's second question.
"They are doing well. And my sons are indeed due to go out soon." She was both excited for them, and nervous. Out in the rogue lands, she could not protect her family. Even if she got a vision, she'd be able to do nothing for them...

Khara nodded - she knew that it was difficult for the mothers and fathers of the swamp to let their children go when it was time, though she didn't understand fully yet, nor did she pretend to. She was not a mother, and reasonably sure she wouldn't become one anytime soon. But she had gone, and she had returned. "It's a tricky thing, growing up...becoming yourself. But it's thrilling, too, as much as it is intimidating."

"It is indeed." She remembered leaving her mother and brothers and making the journey for the Jini-msemi, following her visions of a place where she truly belonged. "I simply pray their own gifts help to keep them safe, and that they come home alive and well. Or that they visit to let me know they found a new home." Instead of a vision telling her. She already knew one of her sons might not return. But she could not see the outcome of THAT future.

"I will keep them in my thoughts," Khara said after a moment of considering what to say. She couldn't truly sympathize, so she wouldn't try, nor could she say that they would all be safe outside the borders - so, again, she didn't. But it also wouldn't have been appropriate to highlight the fact that not everyone came home, and some came home drastically changed. What she came up with seemed a good, neutral-positive compromise.
"Ah, but I'm afraid I must be on my way. It was a pleasure speaking to you, truly. I'm sure we will have the chance again soon enough." The Queen dipped her head respectfully, and took her leave.
