Okay, so everybody heard about how people say "video games rot your brain" or violent video games turn people "violent". Maybe I might have become a bit more aggressive over the years I've been playing but I still find all of these as crap.
However, this might be a legit reason.-Video games encourages smoking. *cough cough* Illusive Man *cough cough* I mean look at him, smoking just makes his badass "illusive" factor go up. Not to mention all the other hardcore video game characters that smoke. For example, Johnson from Halo 3. I was playing a game called Vanquish recently and they even have a designated smoke break button (Nothing like taking a smoke in the middle of combat...).
Point is: Game developers who have characters smoke; promote tobacco industries without even knowing it.
Agree? or Disagree?

Yes and No for if you have played Metal Gear Solid 4, they promote in the load things between each level to not smoke and what not as Snake smokes and shows how bad he sounds even with the degeneration from Fox Die and smoking. Plus, yeah the maybe promoting them without noticing but I have not become aggresive from playing video games. I am aggresive when I am P.O'd at them but thats my norm reguardless since I was young.
In real life and talking with others I only get agressive when people start to annoy me. Other then that a video game has not effected me besides making me enjoy it, want to through my controller at it because stupid Fiona is a pain to control while Panicing in Haunting Ground, or being scared the crap out of by Fatal Frame and its horrible camera angles when fighting a ghostie like the Kusabi or broke neck girl.
They do not rot your brain, you sometimes learn things you did not know like from Age of Empires it basically emulate Ancient Cilivlizations and strategize. Although I would not consider Halo hardcore no more since its losing its steam after its useless recent games and anime collaborated movie and books.
There are plenty of awesome game characters that do not promote unhealthy habits. Like Yuna from Final Fantasy 10 being kind and reasonable, Lara Croft promoting excersize however dangerous in Tomb Raider, or Ezio for fighting injustice and seeing the truth in Assassin's Creed.

Ahhh this is a difficult situation ... it can go both ways. Yes you can say that it promotes smoking and that if people see their favorite character smoke they may want to pick up smoking as well....but I always thought that was completely foolish. I could care less if someone was smoking or anything. I would not pick up a certain habit because I saw someone part-take in this "activity". But ... everyone is different and some people are more impressionable then others. So that's where I come into agreement with your statement. There will most certainly be some people who will begin smoking because they see it in a video game but it wouldn't be fair to judge everyone on those limited amount of people.
On my side of things, I always hated when people went on those rants about how games make children more violent and that it induces murderous like behaviour. I'm someone who has played video since I was around 5 years old. I've played all sorts of games and I've played my fair share of violent ones. I am not a violent person at all and honestly I don't see how playing a game can do that to you...at least not to me personally. Some video games actually taught me things, I learn tons of stuff from playing games. I always bring up that argument when people go about how video games are bad for you haha.

NO. plain and simple. Lets face it I think we all secretly want science to prove that violent games make you violent and games rot your brain. and that theres subliminal advertising to make us smoke (and I'll admit smoking characters are as a rule of thumb always badass).Because then wed have something to blame all our problems on. But hey did you ever stop to think that we enjoy games not because they're violent, but because WE'RE violent. I think youve all got something new to think about.

I always thought that the whole 'oh noes video games cause X and Y' only applied to sheeple.
That is, people who are so blind and can't make decisions for themselves. The term applies to a lot of things. I know, among my friends, we've never seen a character smoking and gone 'Oh hey lets be like this guy and smoke!'.
So, sheeple. If you're smart, you won't be encouraged by video games because you probably aren't smoking anyway.

Disagreed. How can you blame it all on video games? Talk about every single television show and movie created for an audience over 13 ever. Those are what get the kids, not video games. I notice characters in films smoking a lot more than I do video game characters. But sure they have a smoker, everyone has a smoker. If you have a brain you won't be sucked into this "smoking makes me look cool" crap...

Anyone else get reminded of Smoking Man from X-Files when they see Illusive Man? Honestly I can't blame video games for putting in smoking characters. Smoking has become a symbol in our culture that represents a certain personality. It's like putting villains in black. It's not about smoking in games or movies, its about creating the character. Smoking sends us unspoken messages about a person that have nothing to do with smoking. In real life that is not the case. I hate sitting next to smokers. Can't think about anything but the smell. Video games are actually being proven by several new publications to have a positive influence on people who play them up to 20 hours a week (more then that becomes bad). For more, read on: Quote: Of course there are games that are objectionable but we can’t take a black and white view on an entire medium for the miscalculations of some. Truth is that most studies come to the conclusion that games have more positive effects than not. Study after study shows that video games improve spacial abilities, cognitive abilities and even visual attention skills. Authors Lawrence Kutner, Ph.D. and Cheryl K. Olson, Sc.D outline a more scientific vision of the phenomena of video games in their great book, “Grand Theft Childhood.” So it’s a bit unfair and unscientific to hold the limited opinion that games have no social, artistic or educational value. I am naturally violent when someone pisses me off, but it's genetic not video game induced. Sure their violent but video games reduce my violent tendencies rather than make me more violent. Going and shooting someone or hacking off a darkspawn's head relieve my frustration. It is also all up to a person to be manipulated and gullible enough to follow things in a video game from being more violent to smoking. My friends do not need any promotion to be smokers. Most of them did it at a young age to spite their parents...not because some game promoted it. Video games have not had a negative impact on me in any way so far, except a few skipped meals, lack of sleep, and some procrastination with my homework. either way my homework is always done on time so no worries there. I actually believe they have helped my hand eye coordination, reflexes, and play a dig reason for being I go to school to design video games. Now please excuse me while I go hack off someone's head. ׺°”˜`”°º×׺°”˜`”°º× ׺°”˜`”°º×☠☠☠☠׺°”˜`”°º× ׺°”˜`”°º×׺°”˜`”°º×
