The air was cool and crispy, despite the sun already high in the heavens; the hands of winter were beginning to cease their hold over her homeland but were withdrawing slowly. It would still be a few more sunrises before she awoke without seeing her breath.
But, at the very least, the chilled waters of the river were cool and refreshing. The silver mare took a few delicate mouthfuls before lifting her head to stare at her surroundings. "Hm...." Nakia let a light smile touch her lips as Cobalts' encouraging words came forward in her mind. 'A day away from the herds' meadow would do her well', he said just before Zander and Ceron had broken out in some sort of brotherly squabble. That smile only grew as poor Cobalt and the brother's father were forced to intervene...not that it was uncommon.
"I just hope they don't come out of that encounter bruised." She giggled to herself and stepped back from the water, the breeze bringing the sweet scent of grass forth. "But I guess he was right. The day to myself is doing wonders thus far."

Altair made his way along the edge of the river, liking to keep close to the water, even if he was smart enough to know there was no way he was swimming in it in this weather. His goose friend, Dove, was curled on his back in a little ball under his wings. As much as he tried to convince her every year to migrate to warmer places she never went. "You need me too much for me to just leave for three months!" she would say, making him smile. He knew she just didn't want to leave. Despite the bickering they have every now and then, they were best friends to the end. And he'd always keep his best friend warm since she sacrificed her vacation to stay with him. They both hated winter though. Most of the waters froze over or it was just too cold to swim in general. They had to stay on land. How obnoxious was that? So until winter stopped being...well...winter, they were stranded geese with nothing to do but wander.
Today, Altair wasn't headed anywhere in particular, but moving kept the blood pumping through his body so he didn't literally freeze in place. He would fly but flying was even worse. Have we mentioned they hate winter? On the other side of the river he spotted a light gray mare stopped at the river's edge. She seemed so at peace at that moment, he didn't want to disturb her, so he just nodded politely as he made his way, bright blue eyes piercing through his mask in a friendly gesture.
