Ouch, ouch, ouch!
It had seemed like a good idea at the time. Yes, those words that were so often the prelude to trouble. Mostly for the fun of it as he wasn’t feeling particularly hungry, Rei had chased a fat hare all the way to its burrow. When the small creature had dived into hiding, Rei had dived right after. The massive head of the full-grown adult had been stuck (the hare long gone through a different opening) and now all that Rei could do was to snarl away his frustration as four legs tried to push the dirt and release the head.
He laughed at how ridiculous he must look, butt sticking out in the air and muffled sounds resonating inside the dark confined space. Grunting, the orange lion wiggled a few more times until he was finally rewarded with a violent release from his ”captivity”. He didn’t really mind that he was sent tumbling back into what promised to be a nasty fall. Freedom!

He had to admit... when he saw the strange scene, he'd forgotten about his own troubles. Was that... it was! A lion with his head buried in the ground! Curiousity had driven him closer as he puzzled over how in the world any full grown lion had gotten himself into such a situation. I mean, sure, if it was a cub it wouldn't have been so surprising, though certainly as laughable. But an adult? He was baffled.
He had padded up closer, circling the other male cautiously, wondering what to do. Would he hear if vigo called out? Did he want help? And how exactly was Vigo to help in this very odd calamity? He came around behind the orange male when his head came loose. Much to Vigo's chagrin, the force with which he'd been released threw him up and backwards, tumbling the stranger directly into Vigo himself. Now, Vigo was no small push-over, but when an adult about your own size hurtles into you, there is only so much that can be done!
He went sprawling to the ground, grunting as the other's weight rolled across him and came to rest partly on top of him. They were both at odd angles and positions, both terribly uncomfortable and humiliating. With a growl Vigo shoved the male off with both forepaws, struggling to right himself and get to his paws.

“Hey, hey.” He said as he was being pushed, unable to suppress the light rumbling in his throat that came out instinctively. “Easy there, fr-… stranger.”
It occurred to him midway through the sentence that perhaps it wasn’t such a good idea to call a male who you had ran into “friend”. Rei, too, was trying to get back on his feet after being tossed around between a lion and a burrow and he had to suppress the urge to shake himself until he was sure the other lion wasn’t a threat. The orange lion had to admit he owned the blame on this one even if he was slightly suspicion as to why the other lion had “snuck up” on him – which was probably not the case but it certainly felt like that. Anyway, time to make peace.
“Sorry about that.“ He grinned just a little, his expression friendly and mildly embarrassed. “And thanks for softening my fall even though you obviously didn’t mean to.”

He growled and pinned his ears, finally gathering his paws under him and heaving upright. Throwing the other lion a glare he spat dirt from his tongue and shook his head, sending a cloud of dust from his thick black mane. "Trust me," he said blackly. "It was not on purpose that I cushioned your fall." In exasperation he sat himself down right then and there and began grooming the dust from the fur of his right foreleg. He wasn't terribly fastitious, but this went beyond the acceptable perameters of dirtiness.
"Just what were you doing?" he demanded, not quite as aggressively as he'd have liked. There was no sense in provoking an unnecessary fight, but he was aggrivated enough to almost wish it came to that. "What fool sticks his head into a rabbit burrow?" He flicked a scornful glance at the now enlarged and partially collapsed entrance to the home of some unfortunate hare. Still with an aggrieved air, he shifted to cleaning his other paw free from loose debris.

Wow, he looked really annoyed. And for some reason, Rei was finding it really hard not to laugh at the whole situation. Thankfully, it didn’t seem like there would be a fight anytime soon.
“Spur of the moment.” He answered with a smile, shaking his body from head to tail which caused him to sneeze at the dust rising up in the air. There was no point in trying to look strong and dignified around this lion. He’d seen Rei at his worst, after all. “Oh, you should’ve seen it. It was the plumpest hare I’ve ever seen. But… fast, too.”
“Now that I think about it, I didn’t see it in there. There was probably another way out.” The orange lion circled the burrow and surrounding area until he spotted another hole in the ground. “Mmm, here it is. Little bugger got away.” He eyed the other lion curiously before sitting down. He wondered if he could get that aggravated look out of the male perhaps with a name attached as well.
“By the way… I’m Rei.” He rubbed his face on his legs lightly just to get the majority of the dirt from his face but his purple eyes never left the darker lion.

Vigo only scowled at the reply he got. Spur of the moment indeed. If the hare had flung itself off a cliff, would the impulsive lion have followed it then too? He was getting the distinct impression that this was a rather young and immature lion indeed. He stood and gave himself another all-over shake, not content with the state of his fur but resigned to it. "Next time a hare dives into a hole," he said gruffly, "do us all a favor and reme mber the shining success of this experience." He was still frowning, but not quite as severely. If the other male truly was as young as he acted, then lack of experience might just be the real problem, rather that plain stupidity.
The introduction wasn't exactly welcome. He had hoped to get away with only as much said as had been thus far. He gave a deep sigh that rumbled faintly in his chest as a growl. He supposed he owed Rei at least a response. It wasn't like the other lion had hurt him, or even intentionally made life difficult. Still gruffly, he replied, "Name's Vigo." His eyes narrowed slightly at the orange male. "Bit far from home, are you?" It was a sort of back-handed insult, a vague implication that his mother would likely be looking for him. He normally wasn't so snarly, but recent events and now this had soured his mood.

“Oh, I’ll remember this alright. Nice to meet you, Vigo.” Rei said with small smile, trying to hide his amusement at the whole situation. He got the feeling the other male would rather just leave but was too polite to say so and that didn’t really bother him. He let his gaze slide through Vigo’s golden markings with visible interest. The variety of colors and markings he’d seen so out in the rogues was nothing short of incredible.
Far from home? Why would he say that when he obviously didn’t know where Rei was from? Unless… of course! He’d probably been to the Pridelands before and was mistaking the orange lion for a pride member.
“Home? Actually, I don’t really have a home right now. I’m heading for the Pridelands though. You wouldn’t happen to know the way there, would you?”

So abrasive was the youthful lion's optimism and indominatible spirit that the fur bristled down Vigo's back, making him all the more surly. He scowled at the young male and grumbled wordlessly to himself for a few moments. Was this kid dense or something? He got neither of the points Vigo had been trying to make, and persisted in smiling in that infuriating way!!
"Look kid, I am not a map, nor am I seer," he growled, "nor am I your mommy to tell you where to go." He shook his head, sending more dust scattering randomly. "I don't ask the names of the places I've been, though I do enjoy the company of some who live in those territories." For a moment his eyes defocused and his face relaxed into a tiny smile at the memory of the various girls he'd made friends with, however temporarily. His eyes resharpened on the orange male. "You need to either seek out mapmakers, or learn to pay attention to where you are going and where you have been." The other male hardly deserved his ire, but Vigo was feeling put-out, and that never resulted in a positive encounter.

“Hey, hey… ” Rei started softly, trying to appease the other lion before curiosity got the better of him. “What...? What’s a seer?”
The orange lion pretty much ignored every negative thing Vigo said. There had obviously had been a misunderstanding but Rei wasn’t going to bother trying to find the meaning behind words he had nearly forgotten already. And seriously, there was no need to get their mothers into the conversation! It took a great deal to incite Rei who had great amounts of youthful confidence that often made him feel untouchable. It would probably be easy to start a fight had he wanted it. Since Vigo kept pointing out his youth Rei was sure that if he said the right (or wrong?) things – like keep calling him “old man” – they’d probably come to blows. But he really wasn’t the least bit interest in a friendly spar right now. It was hard enough going to a place he had no idea how to find. There was no need to go about making enemies on the way.
“Oh. You scoundrel.” Rei said knowingly with a tiny wicked grin when he saw the hint of a smile on the other lion’s expression. Girls. Oh yeah, Vigo was definitely talking about girls. “What was her name?” Or their names. Eheh. He had the tone of a close conspirator now as he watched the other lion carefully, wondering if he would take offense at the little comment.

Vigo gave him an intent look, bright orange eyes that matched Rei's pelt locked on Rei's own purple ones. Slowly, very slowly, he leaned closer, as if to share a confidence. He tipped his muzzle to get close to Rei's ear. In a soft whisper, he said, "None of your beeswax." He sat back in aloof satisfaction. "Look kid, not every person you meet wants to be your buddy, nor do they want to put up with your prattle." Though he was still exasperated, he felt the lion really did need a reality check, else Vigo feared he'd likely never make it to his destination.
"Go ahead and keep asking directions, but remember... many of us out here are bigger than you, tougher than you, and not likely to want to babysit a wandering youngster." He pierced the orange male with a stern look. "Be polite, give people their space, and mind your own business." There. His concience was salved, and he felt he could finally leave behind the cheerful little snot. "Otherwise you might discover your sunny pelt is all that'll be left of your chipper self." With a parting growl, he turned to go on his way once more, hoping that Rei did not take it into his head to follow him. That would be... unfortunate. For someone. Exactly who, he couldn't have said at just that moment. Pah, but life wasn't working very nicely for him lately!

Rei leaned forward to hear the juicy secret only to fall back again with an obviously exaggerated look of disappointment. He felt the need to almost defend himself and say he’d already met many lions (and not just lions!) who were perfectly happy to chat around with a stranger. Of course those were the minority so far and Rei knew that not all creatures enjoyed the familiarity he tended to show to all. None of it was worth actually saying, of course, as it was clear Vigo was already on the go, tired of younger lion.
“I’ll keep it in mind.” Though it was hard to say if he would, judging by how lightly his words had come out. Honestly, it would probably take a pretty nasty beating to make Rei wary of strangers and even then... Youngster. Pff! He already had a full mane and grown to what he believed to be his full size. He was aware that there were bigger lions around – and smaller ones that could put just as much of a fight. Still, there was no reason to pick a fight with Vigo or fuel a discussion when, technically, Rei was the reason the other male was being so grumpy – he had crashed into Vigo, after all. “Have a nice day, Vigo.”
Rei hoped he did but couldn't help but to laught at the idea that maybe he wouldn't. The orange lion didn't envy the next lion that crossed Vigo's path should that happen.- FIN -
