By most folks' standards, Marceline Sangreal was in trouble. The roaming wildcat was seeking a new home in the Hallowmarl lands, but so far all she'd found was scrubland, desert, gorges, gulches, and, most recently and most pressingly, bandits.
She'd been waylaid by a band of squirrelthieves, led by an ugly-looking mug with an eyepatch. The third group in two days. She sighed when she first saw them- she had got to learn to stop wearing gold out here! Her earrings, glinty and shiny as they were, did make her a target. And although she claimed that she could use them to hurt an opponent's eyes in battle, they were probably far more of a liability than they were an advantage. She stood with a bored look on her face as the leader gave the customary challenge.
"Yes, yes, I know. Stand and deliver, or the hot lands may take me. Come on, let's get this over with. She took advantage of the leader's momentary confusion to butt him in the stomach to double him over, then cracked his face against her knee, driving his head down with her clasped paws. From then on, it was anarchy. The squirrels, angered at their leader's injury, swarmed her. Laughing, she clawed, bit, twisted, flailed, punched, kicked, jabbed, gouged, and simply brawled. It wasn't a clean fight, but it was fun. A greedy-handed squirrel tugged at the bunch of feathers she wore as an earbob, and she punched him square in the face for his foolishness. "I got those off a jay, boy, the ones further up are real gold! Learn your priorities!" Yeesh, these bandits! They had less and less class each time she encountered them. She kicked him once in the gut for good measure. Hah! That'd teach him to attack an unarmed female! She imagined that all of them would have a new respect for the ferocity of a ladycat after this- that is, if they could get up and walk away when she was done. The bandits were fierce, but for now, she had the upper hand. Something in the far distance caught her eye momentarily. There, in the distance- another beast, coming up the path. Hell's teeth! She was already swamped as it was- the last thing she needed was another opponent. How had the bandits called for backup? Their leader was unconscious, and they didn't seem to have any scouts or runners... Growling, she squinted and dove back into the fray. She'd deal with the stranger when she or he got here.

Leandar paced across the sands quickly, he was headed towards a tunnel entrance, he was attempting to head down to the forges in order to practice making glass wares. It was a hobby he had picked up of late. Out of his peripheral vision, he saw a mob of rustling fur, and a jewel clad kitten in the middle of it. The fellow wildcat was fighting fiercely, but she wouldn't be able to keep up the effort for long, of that Leandar was sure. Leandar sprang towards the squirrel closest to the outer edge, and dug his claws into the creatures neck, before he began to slash the squirrel's comrades.

Crap. Crap, crap, crap, he was coming this way. Marceline braced herself for the impact of somebody larger than her- she'd probably have to surrender, best to get out of this with as few broken bones as possible- but when the hit never came, she spared a glance to look at the stranger. The golden-colored cat was scratching at the squirrel bandits on the edge of the pack, knocking them down. For a brief moment, she allowed a smile to cross her face. "Hey, stranger!" she shouted over the noise of the fray. "You on my side, then?" This was very much just what she needed... so long as he wasn't a bigger, meaner bandit, fighting them off for turf.

"Thought I'd even the odds a bit is all," he screamed back to her as three of his claws scratched deeply into a squirrels face. Using razor sharp reflexes, Leandar dodged an attacker who came at his from the right using knee, he quickly rammed it into the animal's stomach, causing the poor creature to collapse. The rest of the squirrels fled after that, seeing that there was no easy victory to be achieved. "There's the occasional band of bandits, the desert is not to be taken lightly. Although we are not Fangroot, there is no shortage of cutthroats." The wildcat couldn't help but laugh at his own joke, and so he did laugh hardily, smiling afterward.

"Well, I sure appreciate that, stranger! You'd think these villains would learn some manners," she grunted as she took a patch of fur off of one of the bandit's tails as he fled. "An' don't come back!" she shouted after him. "No honor amongst thieves. I suppose it's my own fault," she said, reaching up to unclip her earrings and tucked them into her belt pouch. "I guess I'm just used to my reputation preceding me." The necklaces were the next to be put away, the pearls and the amber beads. All that was left was her jade pendant and the earbob of feathers. She never took that one out. Her jewels packed away, she stuck out a paw to shake the stranger's. "My name's Marceline, Marceline Sangreal. I'm new to the territory; it's a pleasure to meet you!"

Leandar smiled and being as friendly as he was, the wildcat was happy to meet a new neighbor. He motioned for the feline to follow him as he moved a rock to provide entrance into the Hallow. Leandar dropped down into a tunnel that was more than large enough for him to land on four feet comfortably, and there was a foot on each side of him and above. "This is the real Hallowmarl," he yelled up to the wildcat, standing up on two legs, and then motioning her down. The brawl had been fun, but the wildcat was still headed for the forges, and he could have some fun, giving the newbie a tour along the way.

Marceline followed the golden tom, curious and happy to be out of the fight. Once he got her to safety, she could lick her wounds and rest. "I'd heard you had tunnels... but I had no idea. Nobody did... I mean, rumors, yeah, but... dang, it looks like you guys really do live down here." She gazed around in wonder at the entrance. "This is huge! How extensive are they? Where all do they go?" She was as curious as a child, asking about everything.

Leandar smiled and looked upon Marceline as if she were but an ignorant infant asking why the sky is blue. "That you'll have to figure out for yourself, explore a little, but I can tell you this. The bathspring is to right, the wellspring to the left, and the forges are down a level. Someone down in the forges will probably be willing to draw you a map to get you started." Leandar smirked, very pleased with himself as he walked, he had never gotten to be a tour guide before. "I'm headed to the forges now if you wanna come along," he offered, walking along a slightly skinny tunnel, which sloped ever so gently downward.

Marceline smiled widely. "I'd most certainly like that! I've seen the worked metal that comes outta here- have some meself, little pieces my father gave me- but I've certainly never seen the forge. Thanks!" She followed him, edging down the narrower tunnel. They were going further and further into the earth, and she tried to memorize the feel of the ground beneath her paws.
Once, though she thought he eyes were tricking her, she'd seen smoke in the desert, gently wafting up from the ground. Could it have come from this forge? Or perhaps a Hallowmarlian cooking fire? There was so much to learn about her new home! And her guide could probably answer a lot of her questions.
"So how long have you lived here? Forgive me for asking so many questions- this is all so new to me, y'see."

"I've lived here all my life..." Leandar said solemnly, thinking about his less than favorable childhood, being an orphan had added taking care of his own survival into things, making life much harder than a child should even know. "The questions are quite alright," Leandar said, returning to his cheery demeanor. The tunnel leveled out as he spoke, opening into a large cavern, one of the many gathering areas sprinkled amidst the tunnel. Leandar led his feline companion deeper underground, taking a turn into another downward sloping tunnel. "You are quite the fighter, Marceline. From where do you hail originally?"

"Thanks! You're quite the tough guy yourself..." Oh, bees' bonnets, she'd missed his name! Had he said it? She wasn't sure. Quickly, she continued, not wanting to seem too flustered. "It's lucky for me, then, that I found a guide with a lifelong familiarity with the place! I was born in Fleuve. My father was a warrior-merchant; originally, he started as hired muscle to protect traders who went into, shall we say, less-friendly territory. My mother was born and raised in Fangroot, but her family fled to Fleuve when she wasn't yet of age. So I come from tough stock, despite the Fleuve clan's reputation!" She knew that the rest of the forest considered them a bunch of softies. Truth be told, many of them were. But being the goon squad for a bunch of wealthy traders was never a bad place to be. "My parents made sure I knew how to fight. I'm a better warrior than my older half-brother- my dad's first mate, her son- and I don't know about my older half-sister, but I do know that I'm doin' my best to make my dad and mum proud of me." Whew! She'd not been so long-winded in a while. Ah well, the tom didn't seem to mind. "Is it my imagination, or is it getting warmer?"

Leandar brushed his right paw through his whiskers after standing up right to walk for a paces. Returning to all fours, he looked over to Marceline, noticing that she seemed flustered as she was about to say his name. Staring into her eyes, he listened to her whole speel before saying, "the name's Leandar, and yes it gets warmer as get closer to the forges." This time when the tunnel came to a level plateau it led to a room that was circular with many different routes to choose from. Pausing for a moment, Leandar thought about what the correct route to the forges was.... Sometimes his memory failed him for a moment, but after closing his eyes and thinking; the right route came to him. After they had continued walking for a bit, Leandar burst forward with a question; "Would you like to join the Hallowmarl Court?"

"Leandar," she repeated. Like the hero. She could remember that. As she followed him, she was a bit surprised by the suddenness of his question. Joining a court? Hmm... this might be useful. Being able to rise in the ranks here would be a good thing to do... but, still, best to find out what it was! "Maybe," she said. "I'm not sure what it is!"

The tomcat burst out in a fit of laughter, waves of sound could be heard yards ahead, but quickly as it began, the laughter died down. He had been so excited to give her an invitation, Leandar had forgotten to explain the group's purpose! Leandar turned and looked at Marceline, remaining his usual free-spirited self, but somehow a seriousness was reflected in his eyes. "It is a club, whose sole reason for existence is to protect the members of Hallowmarl. Our group is without a true brawler, I am truly a ranged warrior myself."

"So an organization that protects the innocent and the young and old, right? Fightin' the good fight, pickin' off bandits?" Marceline smiled. Oh, this would be an amazing social move! She could keep up her strength and keep it channeled. Strength without purpose, after all, was just stabbing in the dark. "Sounds like a mighty fine time to me! I'm game for it!" she said excitedly. "What do I have to do to sign up?"
