I could help but smile as I completed the final letter and tossed it to the side with the rest of the mail I was to be sending out once the mail man came over. My eyes slid and stared out the dusty window into the sunlight that leaked through the curtains as dawn arrived. It was so beautiful and so bright. Perhaps I should enjoy breakfast out in the courtyard as I wait for the post to arrive... I nodded and my hand clenched the bell as it rang and echoed in the lonesome house. Bernard, one of my butlers, came quickly to my side as I ordered him to prepare my meal outside this morning. Like a loyal dog he agreed and quickly shuffled away to work. Most of my servants acted this way. Almost as if they were frightened. Terrified. Though I couldn't imagine why...

It's not as if they know my plans. I thought as I yawned and stretched, getting out of my seat. I leaned in closer to the window until my nose brushed the panes. How is it that the same world that produces such a magnificent sight be the same home to such wretched people? I pondered as my eyes narrowed. I turned away from the window and walked slowly out of the parlor, the stack of letters in my hand and my jacket in the other.

Bernard and Francis introduced my breakfast and brand of tea before once again leaving me to myself. It was hard to be alone. Someday I knew it would be my time and I'd except the cold hands of death with open arms. But until then I had to do what I knew I was called to. I needed to improve this beautiful world. People were like a disease spreading throughout the body. It had to be stopped before it was too late. I knew it was my job to do it. Sure, it wasn't easy. But I can't deny that I wasn't enjoying some of it.

A smirk grew on my face as I watched the mail man loom from the distance. I pushed my chair back and got to my feet. My fingers twiddled and played with the letters in my hands as I strode over to meet and hand him the letters. We exchanged a bit of talk before he beamed with a childish grin and tipped his hat as he walked away. And so it begins once more... I thought with a chuckle as I watched him disappear.

Ugh, morning... I drearily thought as I opened my eyes to the blinding light of the sun as it penetrated my windows. I groaned and rolled out of bed, rubbing the gunk out of my eyes and the blinking away the blurriness as I sauntered to the kitchen. I made myself a cup of hot breakfast tea and as I waited for it to cool, I went outside to check the mail, not that I ever got any. After all, I lived out in the middle of no where.

"A letter?!" I said, surprise heavy in my words. Quickly, I opened it and skimmed it. Two surprises in one. An invitation...but to what, exactly? The letter didn't fully explain but it sounded interesting enough. Nothing fun or interesting had happened in a long time and I could go for a change. Happily, I clutched the letter tightly and skipped inside to pack my bags. And though I had no idea who the sender of the letter was, I simply did not care.

Packing was easy since I didn't have much. I packed clothes for two weeks. What about Cindy...? I thought. I lived alone and there was no one to take care of her. I chewed my lower lip in thought. "I hope he doesn't mind Cindy coming with me..." I said, thinking aloud. I slipped a choker chain on Cindy and went to put some dog food in a container and grab her food bowl.

With the dog food and Cindy's bowl packed, I grabbed my bag and hooked my dog to her leash. Grabbing my keys, I was pulled out of the house by my only friend and stuggled to lock the door as she attempted to pull me towards the care. I laughed and finally locked it, stumbling along to the car. Opening the door, I set my stuff inside and allowed Cindy to jump in before closing it. I slid into the drivers seat and put the keys in the ignition, starting the car, smiling as it rumbled to a sweet life. Off on a new adventure.

My hands felt around the corners of the envelope as my parents looked down at me, their eyes filled with curiosity. They urged me on and on to open it. Almost so much that I wanted to throw it away right then and there. But I knew I'd get a licking for doing that, so my fingers dug at the corner of the letter and ripped it open. A frilly looking card with just as delicate and fancy handwriting laid inside. My eyes scanned over the paper and I rolled my eyes.

"I've never heard of this guy, but he has invited me to dine with him starting at lunch hour and ending sometime at night..." I stated to them. Their eyes bulged and wicked smiles grew on their faces. They told me I should go. That this sort of thing would make my status of society sky rocket. That I should snag "souvenirs" while I was there. I shook my head and refused. All of a sudden a suffocating silence loomed in the room as my father's eyes practically turned red and my mother looked like she was about to burst into tears. I knew what I said would make them mad... But that's partially why I told them instead of keeping it to myself.

After being sent to my room with no supper, I lit a match and lit the old, waxy candle I had for almost two years. It was almost burning to the bottom. I knew it was time to get a new one soon, but knowing my parents, they'd rather have me living in the dark. They were just like that. I wasn't sure if they loved me, or hated me because I caused more money to fly out of their pockets. I took out the letter from my pockets and read it over again. It did seem like an opportunity to get out of the house and out of chores for the day... And that was more than a good bargain. I nodded and decided I would announce my departure tomorrow morning. That way they'd let me have a bath and I'd skip chores in the morning too.

When I first get it, I always normally laugh. It's like they're wanting me to quit my little challenge, I thought. I ran my finger against the edges of the letter. Once I got to the vertex of it, It broke through my skin. "Hmm." I hummed out with the finger my mouth. So I lifted the opening and felt how decorated it was. Whoever made this must really be arrogant. I thought to myself once more before pulling the actual letter out. I ran my hand against the surface of it from top to bottom. My fingers touched each of the letters even though its very hard to point out its actually easily detected. Being blind can really be easy once you get used to it. As my fingers finished moving through the letters, I crossed my legs and took a sip of the tea I had made earlier. "Since when do I get invited to places? Most people in this retched town hate me for even living." I stopped thinking to myself and started actually thinking about the proposition. "Well I don't have plans, why not?" I turned to my loving companion Luna. "No really why not?" I asked her. It had almost seemed if she had gotten angry with me enough to slap my leg. I continued and wrote, "Fine, fine." I eventually stood, placing the letter on the table. Luna came with me as I walked up to my room to find something to wear to that shindig of Mr.Fritz. Little did I know, the blood coming from my finger had spilled over the letter. Not a word was able to be read.

Charles Bettings

I stood in front of the mansion with awe and wonder. I had never been to an estate this large before... It was absolutely incredible. Well, I wasn't there just yet, I was still a mile or so away from the Fritz Mansion, but that just emphasizes my point about how big it actually is. Absolutely fantastic! I couldn't wipe the grin off my face as I fixed up my dress shirt and tugged my pants up. My walk seemed to have a jump in each individual step and I could see my breath in a clouded form just in front of my own nose.

To think someone like me would be invited to one of these socials... Sure, I wasn't in the bottom of the economical status, but I wasn't even close to this man's level of wealth. I didn't even recall his name being in the recent visits to estates I had been to in the past. Oh well, people are advancing in the way of technology and science, I suppose they can socially too!

My reaction to all of this surprised myself. Just this morning I was weeping over Newton's new "Laws of Motion" because I couldn't quite understand the way the equations fit in with normal ideas of how it all worked. It was just a little too complex for me. Oh, how I wish I had the brains of Isaac Newton. What a brilliant and bright man he was... I envied him most of the time. Everything seemed to be harder for me. I was hoping this event would maybe be a change in the other direction. A positive impact in my life. The anxiety in my heart couldn't contain itself much longer.

But of course, as soon as I reached the residence, the butler greeted me formally and all of a sudden my knees became weak and my voice reduced to just a pinch louder than a whisper. A soft spoken idiot, that's what I am. But the man just looked at me with a sparkle in he old, gray eyes as he took my coat and showed me to the dining room telling my that the other guests would be arriving soon if they were to come.

I was walking along the side of pond that lead to this so called meeting. I rarely have time for any sort of eating so whoever this guy is must have some sort off food. I had been thinking. But that wasn't really on my mind. So many other things were in it. The cold was really getting to me all though I normally welcomed it. There were so many stares and the dust in the air had not purpose. He really didn't need food, although it would greatly please me if it had. The sky was getting really dark and cloudy, It almost frightened me, but that really be against my persona. I kept moving my feet along the graveled lane.
It was actually a big surprise that I have been even invited to this. Well in some sorts it wasn't but many people didn't like me. I was sometimes considered a really vulgar man. I still don't know why. If anything they are the vulgars for pushing me away with their nasty words. But even with that status I had been invited. Back when I first got the letter, I was actually kinda joyful. Without my parents, I had no manners towards anyone. And now, I still don't know much. With their absence, I inherited their fortune. I gained many friends then but of course I knew the only reason was because they wanted my money, not my friendship. So I continued to looks at the invitation with sad eyes. The letter was quite fancy and nice, so what did that say? Did that mean that whoever this Arnold guy is actually putting a effort to meet me? Of course not. I ended up crumpling the paper and throwing it away. A candle that was on the table above it, dripped on it and covered it with wax. By the end of the morning, I was getting dressed for it. So now back to the dusty road, I was kinda happy that I had gone in my normal clothes. It seemed that it would eventually rain. I then suddenly saw the tip of the mansion from the behind of a tree. It was a gigantic building. I wasn't blown away at all if not disappointed. I was hoping for a small dinner with someone I could get along with. All in, when I came to the door with the butler in front of me, my eyes became dreary. I walked in and sat on a chair waiting for the actual person to come and greet him.

The air felt crisp and cool as I continued on the pathway following the address that was given at the bottom of the letter. But considering I had passed by this estate once or twice before, I didn't actually need it. To me, it seemed a little funny that someone with such a mansion and considerable amount of wealth would invite a person like me. I mean, I came from a simpleton family after all... It was just so bizarre to me.

But I was going to keep on a happy face as my parents instructed me, hoping that would get me a warm meal. Though I didn't plan on "taking a sovenier", as my parents put it. That sort of thing disgusted me. Of course people thought of commoners as low lives when there were some who stole anything they could get their grimy, sticky little fingers on. It made me disappointed in who I was, but more in who my parents were. I was going to show an example of someone who wasn't a low-life. Someone who actually deserved to be invited to these social things--as you can see however I still have the commoner symptom of a lack of vocabulary.

The butler greeted me, though seemed a little baffled because I wore no coat for him to take off and store. We shared an awkward silence and smiled before he showed me the way to the dining room. Every room I passed by was spectacular. My little shack I lived in was about the size of this guy's study room, and the dining room was set up delicately. Maybe I don't belong here... I thought as my mouth gaped open for only a moment before closing. Two people has arrived before me, but they didn't seem to be socializing with each other. I stood alone as the butler left me, staring back and forth between the two of them.

I found finding the mansion rather easy since it was unrealistically massive. Finding the damn driveway was another matter. I had to drive around a bit before I finally found it, driving into it and parking. I stepped out, though I had to step back in to grab the leash off of the passenger seat. Opening the side door, I hooked it to Cindy and lead her out, closing the door and locking the vehicle before sauntering up to the door in an embarrassed manner. I felt like I shouldn't have brought Cindy, like I shouldn't have brought myself, but it was too late to turn back and leave seeing as I had already knocked on the elegant wooden door.

The butler answered and didn't so much as glance at my pet before gesturing for me to enter by stepping aside and bowing at his waist. Shyly, I walked in, thankful I had just given Cindy a bath the previous day. The butler, as he lead me to the dining room, explained that the owner of the "house" would be with me after a short period of time. I nodded silently and took a seat a couple chairs away from the other three, feeling awkward and out of place.

After completing my brunch I gazed off into the horizon and smiled. How I wish the time would come sooner. The time for me to be the very last one on earth alive and well. I didn't want war, no. I didn't want that at all. I wanted to be the poison underneath the world's skin that only revealed itself at the last breath humanity had. I wanted to be there to laugh in its face and grin with utter joy at my success. Letting myself be known would only complicate things, and I wasn't one to be fair.

My plan was properly organized. I chose families with little connections first. And the individual guests had no knowledge of each other or their existence. When they would begin to disappear, the guests would only prove my point about their selfish desires to live. I loved what I did. Toying with their minds. Would I let this batch watch each other die? Perhaps if they got along. Either that, or they'd slowly die off like flies, one by one. I closed my eyes and sighed, trying to contain the insanity within me.

A maid--I don't recall her name--appeared next to me and asked if I was alright. I shook my head and of course she showed curiosity. Behind her, Bernard stated that all messages had been received though it seemed that some would probably arrive later than others. I nodded and thanked him politely, and I could tell he gave the maid a look of some sort because she back away from me and began to follow the loyal butler.

As I made my way inside, several of my servants approached me and asked me all the typical preparation questions. I told them my color and china set preference, and they immediately went to work. I smiled and headed to my quarters, acknowledging that guests would arrive soon. I stared out the window as a butler tied my suit up, watching guests approach only a little before the other. I'll allow them time to socialize before I make an appearance. I thought, my eyes staring out into the horizon once more in a daze.

There were now four of us in the room, but the silence was almost deafening me. I couldn't stand it. I hated silence. Normally if I was alone waiting for the the host to arrive, I'd hum a tune to myself or pace to entertain myself. But there would be none of that because of the others here. I needed to portray myself as a proper, educated man for the rest of my family. I was representing them after all. My eyes shifted to the seemingly mixed company the man had invited. How odd, really... Why would he pick people who--at least in appearance-- seem to be completely different? We all appear to be of different levels of wealth... What sort of man was this Arnold Fritz?

The woman seemed nice enough to chat with. Or at least, she looked as if she'd be easier to talk to than the man and the child. A child, of all the things to see... Perhaps he was a relative or something. Though the boy was practically in rags, so probably not considering the size and magnitude of the mansion we were in. I walked slowly up to the girl and bowed gracefully before we exchanged names. The actual conversation was at first a bit awkward and quiet. Of course, as soon as I commented on her beautiful dog she called "Cindy", we just chatted away while the others gave a few odd glances our way.

"Oh! Oh, quite! Yes, I really do love border collies, and for it to be a mixture of the chow and collies, simply splendid. Yes. Oh, well I do know quite a bit about the breeds of dogs. I've read a few books on them. They're interesting to say the least! It's so nice to meet someone with a similar interest!" I exclaimed, chuckling happily and feeling lucky that at least one of the guests here was willing to converse with me.
