for those of you that haven't heard about the issues going on in Egypt, the government has literally shut down the internet in the country, All service providers and whatnot. This is to stop people en Egypt from sending news and information on the riots caused by civil unrest in the corrupted government.
more can be read here on Egypt

This is something that has never happened before in history... and the US wants it.

Honestly... do not see this going all too well. Sure, Canada is trying to get metered billing, which is also quite ballsy (and if that's the case, I'm moving to Vancouver since I do not want to pay per byte of information), but I can definitely say that if a kill switch were brought in, riots would ensue if they ever felt the need to shut down...

Opinions on both the kill switch and metered billing
Egypt?

I believe BBC is streaming live video from Egypt. Too busy atm to get a link tho. razz

:/ I heard about the plan that gave an off switch to the internet and I think its retarded. Another measurement of control against the American public. It makes me glad that I am moving out of this country. I'm so tired of the passiveness of the citizens and how much control the government actually has. I wouldn't mind it if they actually took care of their citizens but as it stands we're just numbers... and it pisses me off.

As for the metered billing in Canada, the people need to seriously start standing up against the big companies and write to the local parliament member. This is going to stretch across all of Canada if it continues in this manner. If they make lots of money doing it, and can get away with it, they're going to do it.

I just cannot see a kill-switch for the internet working in America for so many reasons. When I feel more eloquent, I'll think about posting more of my opinion but I'm just... still in RAGE mode from other news and stuff going on.

Indeed, it's one guy who wants it through, but it only takes one, so good luck to you guys.
Us canadians on the other hand, are raging over the fact that UBB was passed. So far I'm hearing it's only Bell. But the cap is 25 gigs per month... two dollars per gig. So there is hate going on here. I've been telling everyone about it.

Uh, caps like that have been around on all ISPs for quite a while now. The bill that's getting passed just makes it even worse.

I am aware of the caps existing, but none as low as 25 gigs or 2 gigs a month.

Oh, they existed alright. My parents have had 25 GB caps for a few years now. Rogers' Ultra-Lite package has been capped at 2 GB ever since it began to exist, which has been as long as I can remember bandwidth caps existing. The CRTC decision today basically allowed Bell and Rogers to force UBB on third-party ISPs, such as TekSavvy, who previously offered plans with both 200 GB caps, and also unlimited plans. I would advise you not to argue with me, I've been sounding the horn about bandwidth caps for years, ever since I learned of their existence. Therefore, I'm quite informed on the issue.

Ok, tthat is shitty, but I'm going out and and telling people about it anyway, because people aren't aware. If it has been around as long as you have said, that is also pretty ballsy, but as a country with some of the highest internet billing in the world, I think there is a problem and I hope to help change that.

This basically sums up my feelings towards this issue:

Hilariously sums up the UBB

Agh, a redditor got me with that one last night. I hit my head against the keyboard several times.
I think this is a better example.

rofl Sorry, I just find it funny how people think that it's a full-blown kill switch that Obama can use whenever the hell he wants. User Image

Well who knows. America has been in a state of emergency for almost ten years now. XD;

And good news on the Canada front! The Harper Government is going to force the CRTC to rescind or they will be overturned.

Hehe, the switch is going to be used if a /cyberattack/ ever occurs. PLUS, it won't turn off the ENTIRE internet, only the parts with important information. 3nodding
