Just some stuff I did on another forum.

Looks like PlayStion is embracing the android platform. Remember when we saw the PS Phone play RE2. That functionality will be available to all android devices. So it looks like Sony is launching a PS emulator on android among other things. It will be called PlayStation Suite. No PlayStation phone was shown but I guess it just means that what was shown is primarily an app. The device though might be shown at Mobile World Congress.

Sony's next gen handheld is currently known as NGP (Next Generation Portable or NeoGeo Pocket).

It currently looks like a regular PSP but more curvy.

Features include:

  • PS3 level graphics
  • front and back cameras
  • 5" OLED qHD (960x544) touch screen with a back track pad on the back which is the same size as the screen.
  • Dual analog sticks. According to kotaku they are not the not the nubs we had on the PSP but actual sticks. Sony is calling it micro analog sticks
  • New game media to be used
  • flash memory is on board
  • WiFi, 3G, and GPS
  • SIXAXIS support built in
  • Games include: Uncharted (which they played), Hot Shot Golf (played), Little Deviants (played), Little Big Planet, Wipeout, and Resistance.
  • Downloaded PSP games can be played on NGP
  • Near is an application that pretty much lets you stalk people
  • Capcom (Guy who did Monster Hunters), Sega (Guy who did Yakuza), Konami (Mr. Kojima) people showed off PS3 games running on NGP. Such as Lost Planet, Monster Hunters Portable 3 (Not a PS3 game), Yakuza 4, Metal Gear Solid 4. This is to show how easy it is to port a PS3 game to the system.
  • Kojima is talking about cloud computer and how he wants to use it in games.
  • Kojima is talking about using Cloud computing to play a PS3 game on a PS3 system then using the cloud take that game and play it on NGP. He is working on a game that will utilize this feature and will present it at E3.
  • Tim Sweeny (Trendy Entertainment?) is showing off Dungeon Defenders. A game originally in development for the PS3 but moved to NGP. Again showing how easy it is to port PS3 games to the handheld in such a short time.
  • Call of Duty coming to NGP (Who would have thunk it?)

Some better images!

http://www.the-magicbox.com/1101/game110127g.shtml

Plus some specs. I'm not sure if these are real but they're interesting.

  • CPU: ARM Cortex-A9 core (4 core)
  • GPU: SGX543MP4+
  • Dimensions: 182 x 18.6 x 83.5mm
  • Screen: Multi Touch OLED 5 inches (16:9), 960 x 544, Multi touch capacitive type
  • Rear Touch Pad: Multi touch pad, capacitive type
  • Cameras: Front camera, Rear camera
  • Sound: Built-in stereo speakers, Built-in microphone
  • Sensors: Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer), Three-axis electronic compass
  • Location: Built-in GPS, Wi-Fi location service support
  • Keys/Switches: PS button, Power button, Directional buttons, Action buttons (Triangle, Circle, Cross, Square), Shoulder buttons (Right/Left), Left and Right Micro Analog stick, START, SELECT and Volume buttons
  • Wireless Communications: Mobile Metwork Connectivity (3G), IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi (Infrastructure/Ad-hoc mode), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (A2DP/AVRCP/HSP)

The ARM Cortex-A9 should be a decent CPU. Samsung uses the A8 for their Hummingbird CPU on their Galaxy S line. Which if I'm not mistaken handles graphics very well. In addition to Samsung Apple uses the A8 for their A4 CPU on the iPhone 4 and iPad. So hopefully the A9 will be just as great. Plus it being Quad Core is pretty cool.

Capacitive screen is also a HUGE plus. The backtrack pad is also really interesting and the design is trippy.

Now for what concerns me. THE PROPRIETARY PORT on the bottom of this! Ditch it now Sony. If you want to make a dock that's cool but you can make a dock with MicroUSB and MicroHDMI. Which is something that IMO is lacking. I'm sure Sony is going to make a dock for this thing that will include an HDMI port for TV connectivity.

I'm also not seeing any removable memory. I'm not sure if this was discussed or not but I'm not loving it. Add a microSD slot with 32GB support! We still don't know what the internal storage will be but it will be at least 16GB.

I'm also not seeing a port for game media. Kotaku said that Sony said there was new media. It could be flash based though and on the side. Which they don't show a lot of.

Glade to see I was not the only one reading up on this today biggrin

I was looking for unblocked blogs and such at work to read up on this, I can say I will be getting my hands on this baby for sure!
The new game media looks very similar to an SD Card in shape atleast, we will see about size when its closer or at release.

I was up when the conference was going on so I was getting it as they were doing it.

Do you have an image of the media? I haven't seen it.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 28, 2011 4:23 pm

I can try and track the image down, unfortunatly the blog I saw it on is now buried benieth all the major sites that have the same articles up about it.

I am really interested in this, I saw some people posting comments on youtube like "Sony thinks this will crush the iPhone? ya right" and I wanted to comment back (no account) "no, they want to crush Nintendo, its a gaming system, not an over-rated phone."

Found this at HERE
Quote:
Sony's new Next Generation Portable forgoes the UMD drive found in the original PSP and doesn't follow the same digital download only model that the PSPgo did. Instead, it will use a new Flash-based media format.

While speaking on the European PlayStation Blog, Adam Grant, NGP Product Manager for SCEE, revealed some interesting details about the new format - not only can you store game saves on it, but you can add DLC directly to it:

Software titles will be available on a small flash memory based card designed for NGP and these cards can store add-on game content and the game save data directly on to the card.

Being able to store DLC directly on the media itself will eliminate the necessity to carry additional memory sticks for that purpose. This is just one of the many ingenious takes on traditional handheld features found in the NGP.

There's plenty more news coming in on the NGP, so stay tuned to Game Revolution!

Also found this blurb on the memory here
Quote:
Flash-Memory Cards

The NGP will be accompanied by a new format for games, a small flash-memory card on which game titles will be released or saved after downloading. In addition to games developed for the new device, the NGP can play PSP titles, minis, PS One classics, and video and comics from the PlayStation Store.

That's pretty neat.

I dont know about you but I will be getting one as soon as I can (assuming I can afford it at the time). Although sites I saw said Sony was saying it would be affordable, some are estimating between $250 and $350. Of course concidering the amount of stuff going into them, I would not be surprised by this at all.

The best part, I think, is that with a flash-based game format, even if you have some games downloaded, you could have several games with you at once and not have to have 2 or 3 cases to carry everything biggrin

I like that add on/DLC is stored in the game media. More internal memory for other things.

Few more things from Kaz.

Kaz Hirai mentioned additional details about the NGP, Sony plans to release multiple versions of the hardware, including Wi-Fi only and 3G + Wi-Fi models. The company is currently negotiating with carriers in various territories on rate plans and fees. With regards to phone features, he said it doesn't make sense to use NGP as a phone due to its shape, it would require a headset. Hirai also provided additional info on the system:

  • Battery life is unavailable because the system is still in prototype phases
  • NGP is compatible with existing PSP software, it runs PSP games through emulation
  • PSP games can only be downloaded to the NGP, those who already have downloaded PSP titles can re-download them to NGP (you must be within the download number limits imposed by PSN)
  • NGP does not run on Android OS, it uses a customized OS
  • NGP games will ship on custom flash based memory cards, it is a ROM with rewritable space for storing game saves and DLC
  • NGP will support general memory cards as well
  • Current NGP model does not support video output

Bad move on the lack of video output.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 29, 2011 6:37 pm

It seems odd they would not have video output when the current PSP has it, I suspect it might be something that will come about closer to release OR maybe something they can initiate as a software update so long as the port is able to support it.
Atleast it will be PSP compatable, something that will help it (although I don't have any games DL'd myself)

I am curious to see what those plans are with the different territories, I could see them being an utter rip-off in Canada and the US, compared to most other countries both get screwed royally about 3G networks and what not and don't even realize it.

I'm not sure how Canada's providers are but there's NO WAY Americas four major carriers are going to let this go by uncharged. My guess is they'll use tablet pricing and GB limitations with this.

While 3G is nice I pay for unlimited data on my cell phone and have no desire to pay for another data plan that will most likely be a minimum of $20/month.

As for video out, I'm already pissed that the concept model has a proprietary connection. From what I see there is no reason this can't video out. It may be possible for Sony to release some sort of dock that comes with like an HDMI port on it for TV syncing. Even at that I would think they'd need a port on the device.

I was really hoping this would have standard ports like microUSB and microHDMI.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 30, 2011 7:05 am

In Canada there is no such thing as unlimited, my provider (for 3G internet) has two options, both start at $35 for up to 2 or 3 GB and then go up to between $60 and $106 for 10 GB. Cell phones arnt much better, you can get a basic data plan on them for $50 but its only for 500 MB of data.

Maybe the port will have some sort of special wire to do HDMI-out, it would not surprise me, and the lack of common ports isnt unusual for Sony either, they have always been like that.

Well for cell phones only three of our major four have unlimited data. When comes to stuff like tablet data or PC USB modem. None of those have unlimited data.

It's believed though that soon our four major carriers will get rid of unlimited data for cells. AT&T did it back in June and there's rumors that verizon will be getting rid of it soon.

Sprint just recently will start charging an additional $10 in addition to the data plan you need.

Sony started doing really good with ports. sony ericsson has started using microSD and micro USB ports on their phones. The original PSP used miniUSB and I was hoping Sony would continue it.

The only thing I can think is that maybe the mini-port is hidden in any shots we see and they simply have not talked about it to others.

Some sites are claiming there will be multiple versions, some without 3G.

@Shoate, Between SailorCancer and I, I doubt any Sony news could get through us lol

There will be multiple versions. Kaz confirmed it.

I'm wondering if Sony will do something like this:

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

This is the Motorola Atrix HD Multimedia dock. As we can see the dock has a microHDMI port on it (among other things). While the device itself has a microHDMI port on it I'm wondering if Sony could make something like this.

It's possible, it owuld make viewing movies on it far easier and charging as well. Even if Sony doesn't I could see a 3rd party company doing it so long as the video out was supported by software.
