There was a heavy chill in the air today that made keeping warm a bit difficult. So Synestra was forced to keep moving to maintain her body heat. Not that she minded of course as the small grey mare was always looking for new places to explore and adventures to be had. Today was certainly no exception, cold or bad weather rarely kept her adventuring at bay. As for where she was going, well she never quite knew really, usually she just followed her hooves and ended up wherever they took her, sometimes she picked a direction and others she decided upon after to talking to local Soquili to find out where the most interesting places were.

Recently she had stopped at a nearby stream to take a quick rest and get a drink, but now she was on the move again, her short legs carrying her quickly across a large meadow. Grass and trees as far as the eye could see, how utterly dull. Sighing Synestra turned towards the forest hoping that perhaps hidden amongst the trees would be something of interest.

At first she thought her decision would go unrewarded, but then up ahead something caught her eye. A very large red apple was hanging from a branch on a tree just ahead. Syneastra trotted forward happily, tail flicking behind her. Of course her happiness faded for a moment when she reached the tree, the apple was much higher than she had first thought it to be. Well no worries, she would figure out somehow to get it down. Lifting her front legs off the ground Synestra stretch up, balancing on her back hooves and tried to reach the apple. Still too far away. She took a moment to glance about to make sure no one was around and then jumped up to try to reach it.

Oh so close, now more determined than ever Synestra repeated the process of balancing on her back hooves and jumping, she would get that apple if it took all day!

Inhaling the cold air, the mare suppressed a slightly shiver. At first, a brisk walk had seemed like the perfect idea to warm her up, but now she was beginning to think she had underestimated the temperature. She chortled slightly as she remembered how Tinsel, her humming bird, had refused to come with her, preferring to nestle amongst her bedding where it was relatively warm. She didn't blame her.

Weaving through the trees, Sakura hummed a tune to herself. It was a sweet little melody, one she had sung to her siblings to help them sleep when they were young. She liked it. Soft notes filled the air around her with song as she smiled slightly, casting her chilly surroundings from her mind. She ambled on as though in a trance, almost stumbling into a small gray mare jumping for apples.

She stopped herself just in time and looked down, surprised to see anyone else out on a day like this. "Oh, hello there! I'm Sakura." With her greetings out of the way, she seemed to realize the smaller mare was in a slight predicament. "Would you like some help?" Not waiting for an answer, she began to stretch her neck up, attempting to fetch the just-out-of-reach apple for the other horse.

There was a sudden flash of pink from the corner of her eye as she made yet another attempt to snag that apple. "Watch where you're going!" Synestra snapped at the mare in frustration, though it was mostly because of her failed attempts at reaching the apple than the mares sudden appearance. And then before she could say anything else the mare not only offered to help but began reaching for the apple. No! This wasn't fair, she did not ask for or want the help. "No, I don't need you help." Synestra blurted out and then jumped for the apple again hoping to snag it before the mare did.

Her jump proved futile again as the apple remained just out of reach. Oh if only she were a bit taller or could jump a bit higher it would be hers. Synestra stomped her hoof in frustration. She even considered given the pink mare a headbutt just to get her away from the apple, but that would be extremely rude and childish. The only thing she could do now was pray the mare would listen to her about not needing help. Or else Synestra's anger could very well boil to the surface.

The mare froze mid-stretch, her teeth just about to clasp around the juicy apple. For a moment, she blinked in surprise. She was only fetching the apple for the mare, it wasn't like she would eat it herself. Withdrawing her neck slightly, she regarded the Usdia, who was once again jumping for the delicious fruit.

"I only meant to pass you the apple, it would save you a lot of trouble. With your size, no offense, it'd be unlikely that you'd reach." Her tone was friendly, her words meant as nothing more than caring advice. But watching the small mare stomp her hoof upon the ground was a familiar sight which triggered a memory in the Soquili.

One of her younger siblings had been playing with a colored leaf, when a sudden gust of wind picked it up and blew it just out of reach. The young foal had been determined to reach it on it's own, and had refused any help with the futile task. "Well..." She said, taking a step back, "Why don't you try again?" Her eyes were already eying the branch, planning to try and pull it down a little so the Usdia wouldn't see mid-leap.

Synestra let out a huff but really the mare had a good point. Due to her small size the chances of actually reaching the damn apple where pretty slim, but she was determined to try, like she always did when it came to obstacles in life and overcome them, and if not well then she would just abandon the darn thing where it was. "I appreciate your offer for help but I prefer to do things myself. I try not to let my size get in the way." If she was meant to have that apple then she would be able to get it under her own power.

Eying the mare for a moment Synestra then turned her attention back to the apple. "Fine I will try again, but I don't see the point. You and I both know I can't reach it." Her face crinkled up with a look of determination and then she pushed off with her back legs, launching herself up once more towards that out of reach apple. If she didn't get it this time then it could bloody well rot on that branch for all she cared.

As the small mare leaped, Sakura's neck darted out. Her teeth clamped down on the branch as she applied just enough force for it to bend, lowing the apple to just within the Usdia's reach. Letting go quickly, the pink mare took a step back, trying not to show that she had moved in any way.

She's a stubborn one. She'd never accept the apple if she knew I'd helped her. A cautious thought filled Sakura's mind, but it was dulled by the glow of pride within her. She found enjoyment in helping others, it reminded her of the past when she'd looked after the foals.

"I never said it was impossible, just improbable. See?"

What a surprise! Her teeth actually sunk into he apple. In fact Synestra was so surprise that she nearly let go of the thing before it was freed from it's branch. But she clung onto it and with her weight pulled it clear off the tree. Once back on the ground she looked up at the larger mare, a bit of surprise and excitement twinkling in her eyes. Settling the apple down on the ground Synestra now realized that through her frustration earlier she had failed to properly introduce herself to the mare when she first arrived. "I'm sorry, I've let my manners slip away on me today. I'm Synestra. I do believe you said your name is Saukra?"

Her gaze lowered to the apple for a moment then back to the pink mare. "Would you like some? They are somewhat hard to find this time of year." She didn't mind sharing the apple, and hoped the mare would agree, it would certainly make up for any rudeness she had shown towards her earlier. "Are you from around here? I don't think I've ever seen you before." Her eyes looked towards the mares wings, and she also noticed that she had a horn as well. All that combined with the pink of her pelt made Synestra think of her adopted sister Mercy. One thing Synestra has always been a bit jealous about was Mercy's ability to fly, well sort of fly, as Mercy was still learning. But oh the freedom it could grant!

Delighted at the Usdia's glee, Sakura felt a warm glow spread through her chest. Though she helped others as much as she could, without a herd or any real close ties it became difficult to do so on a regular basis, which was slightly saddening as it brought her true joy to know she helped others.

As the smaller mare began to talk, the pink mare smiled. Everyone had a nicer side underneath the surface, they could just be outwardly stubborn at times. "Yes, that's right. Synestra? That's an unusual sounding name, though a very nice one. Does it mean anything?" Her curiosity blazed for a second, eyes sparkling.

Eying the apple, the mare paused, wondering if she should take part of the other mare's prize. But she recognized the hint of an apology, and would gladly show her that she was forgiven for it in any way she could. "You did try quite hard to get that apple, but if you don't mind, then I certainly won't say no!" Apples were a treat at any time of the year, after all.

"I don't normally travel much, I just stay in one part of the forest." Her wings rippled slightly at her side, "Though if you do ever come across that spot, it'd be hard to miss me." She chuckled lightly, referring to her bright pink color. Never in her life had she managed to travel anywhere with even the slightest amount of stealth.

Synestra gave her shoulders a bit of a shrug. "It doesn't have a meaning as far as I'm aware. Though I've never given it much thought on whether it did or not before." Perhaps she would ask her father when she got home if it did have a meaning or not. That made her wonder if her brothers name had a meaning as well. Ah well something to remember and ask about later, now was not the time to dwell on such small details. A small smile crossed her lips as the mare agreed to let her share the apple.

Lowering her head Synestra carefully bit the apple in half, or as close to half as she could manage. Using her muzzle she pushed the one half towards the mare. "I don't mind at all." Then she took her half and chewed it happily, tail flicking slightly as she enjoyed the taste of the apple. It was still nice and crisp with a good flavor to it. Certainly well worth all the frustration that trying to get it had caused. Gulping it down she looked towards the mare once more. "I couldn't imagine staying in one place for a long time. I'm almost always on the move, looking for new places to see and new faces to meet." Letting out a chuckle Synestra caught on to the mares slight joke. "Well you certainly snuck up on my earlier, so you aren't always that easy to spot." She said in a good-hearted manner.

A name with no meaning, was it good or bad? In a way, it would feel strange to be called something that meant nothing. But at the same time it gave you a way to forge the name to yourself, to make your name what you want to be. The name could be twisted to fit the individual, and then YOU would be the one giving it a meaning. Sakura shook her head, her mind was straying. Usually she didn't daydream that much, preferring to travel with the flow of the conversation, but lately she'd been in a somewhat philosophical mood. Perhaps it came from living in the same place and doing the same things every day. Some variety was needed.

Lowering her head, she munched on her part of the apple. A sweet, crisp sensation flooded through her mouth, with just a tinge of sourness. She swallowed it down happily, enjoying the flavor that was so rare at this time of the year. "I'll admit I like meeting new people, but I'm very attached to my home. It's comfortable, I know the forest. What's traveling like?" Sakura enjoyed hearing stories, almost as much as she liked telling them.

She chuckled along with the mare, "Trust me, that's the rare exception, not the norm! Once a stallion actually had to squint because he was unused to seeing such bright coloring!"

Really she just couldn't understand the allure of staying in one place. What's the fun with being surrounded by the same boring old trees, grasses and faces all the time? But she knew several who were like that. Her father was one, preferring to stay within the herd than travel about. She couldn't blame him really, some got the itch to travel and some didn't. Even so, she did enjoy telling others about her travels and perhaps through that they too traveled to those places, though only in their minds. It may also inspire them to one day seek out an adventure or wander father than they normally would.

"Well the forest is nice." She said, and if the mare liked staying in her home then so be it. "Traveling is really great. It's truly amazing what you see out there...and who you meet. I met this one stallion whose eyes had this strange glow to them, but he was very friendly. He showed me this group of rocks that looked like a sleeping lion. I never knew rocks could look like that." She smiled slightly as she recalled that day. "Though you have to be ready for just about anything too, never knew just what you are gonna run into. And sometimes it can be hard to find a place to sleep for the night, especially when there is bad weather. There's not always shelter to be found around." Perhaps this mare would now see what she was missing by staying in one place and seek out an adventure, and Synestra would be happy to accompany her if needed. It was nice to have a travel partner.

Flashing the mare a smile Synestra laughed a bit. "Well I would think your bright color could come in handy at times. Would make you easy to see if someone was looking for you."

Sakura's eyes shone with joy for a moment, her mind painting a wonderful picture. Rocks moved about, prowling as though of a feline nature. Stallions with eyes as blazing as the sun pranced around, blinding those they looked at for too long. Brilliant shades of... she suddenly shook her head. Such places only existed in the mind of foals, she had exaggerated the story, of course.

A part of her yearned to go and see if what she told herself was true. Surely somewhere out there such places existed? Synestra made them sound real. Yet even as the sparks of desire were reaped, a slow plague of doubt leeched into them, slowly destroying each one. Anxiety filled her veins. No, she had not the courage to leave her comforting trees. Maple, oak and ash would be her home.

"It sounds amazing, but... I couldn't live such a life. I like comfort, I feel safe here." Sakura shook her head once more, clearing away the last clinging tendrils of desire.

She let out a low chortle, "That's one way to look at it. At least I can blend in in a meadow full of flowers!"

There was a sense of wonder in the pink mares eyes as Synestra spoke and the small mare thought for a moment that she might find the idea of adventuring alluring, but then she changed her expression. Such a shame that she did not wish to see the world, or even a small part of it, but not every Soquili out there had the desire to wander about and Synestra certainly wasn't going to hold that against Sakura. Flashing the larger mare a big smile Synestra let out a slight chuckle. "It's good to have some place safe to be. Though I love to travel about I always return home to what is familiar to me." Giving her mane a bit of a shake Synestra continued. "It is amazing. I really happened upon exploring by chance, when I was younger and then I grew to love it and adventuring became a part of my life. I couldn't imagine doing otherwise."

Perhaps all this mare needed was someone to be with for a short trip out of her familiar zone. "You know, if you ever wanted to do some minor exploring I could show you around a few places. Nothing too far away from here of course. But I have to admit sometimes it's nice to travel with someone as opposed to alone." Synestra would never turn down the opportunity to show another around if the opportunity presented itself.

"Blending in with flowers, hey you never know when a skill like that could come in handy." Synestra chuckled lightly.

"W-well...." For a second she hesitated, fighting indecision. Her mind flashed back to the past. She was but a young filly, surrounded by her many siblings. A tall, muscular stallion stood in front of them. He was a dark red in color, with hearts dotting his rump. His mane was a dark black. Two large, imposing wings flanked either side of him.

He bent his head and looked gravely at Sakura, his daughter. "I won't be gone long. Don't stray far. I will be back before you know it. Wait for me." Days, weeks, months passed and still her father had not returned. Even now, when all her siblings had left her, she waited loyally for his return. But what were the chances he'd come back at exactly the time when she decided to explore a little? "I guess... a little exploring could never hurt." Her heart thumped loudly, half with fear and half with anticipation. She had never strayed far beyond the realms of the forest.

"Well... you know, it could come in handy for... for hunting those darn... Nope, I've got nothing." Sakura chortled gently. Her bright color had few advantages, but she liked it nonetheless. It was a part of her.

Synestra waited while Sakura thought the whole thing over. Really she hoped the mare would agree, what's the worse that could happen on a short little trip? Well no one could say for certain but you also would never find out if you didn't go. All kinds of wonders awaited those who were willing to go that extra mile and see things that others were too frightened to see. She knew there were times when staying put was a good thing and also knew her limits when it came to such adventures - well most of the time at least. As Sakura agreed Synestra beamed her a smile

"Trust me you won't regret this. I know a great little place to go to, and it's not at all far from here." Inside she was jumping for joy at the idea of getting to go out with another, far too often she spent her time wandering alone. Yes she would meet different Soq along the way but generally they just spoke to her for a short time and then they would go their own way. But not this time, today she would show the mare a little excitement, let her experience what an adventure could hold. Synestra let out a laugh. "Well...I'm sure you could come in handy for a number of things, just gotta find what that thing is, that's all."

Glancing out amongst the trees for a moment Synestra then returned her gaze to Sakura. "Ready to go?" She certainly was and really there should be nothing holding Sakura back at this point, the mare had already agreed to go, but would she take the first steps without needing some nudging. Well she would find out soon enough.
