I don't like Harry.
I know, sacrilege, right?
But really, he's too angsty, he's overly childish, he's a bad judge of character, he's stubborn and impetuous, he's not that smart, and he's only talented at one or two types of magic.
Really, he's just lucky, and has amazing friends.
I'm hoping that in Book 7, he'll turn around and do something for himself.
What do other people think?

Harry's my favourite character, personally. He is so multi-dimensional.
How is he a bad judge of character? He chose Ron over Malfoy, which, in itself, shows a very good judge of character.
And no, he isn't talented at just one or two types of magic. Remember that he comes from a non-magic childhood, and all of this is very new and surreal to him. He caught on very quickly to the patronus charm, which shows talent and intelligence. He was able to fight the Imperius curse, which shows talent and drive.
He has a right to be angsty. His parents were murdered, he had a horrible childhood, he comes to a place he finally feels accepted in and even Hogwarts turns on him at some points, he see Voldemort every year (barely making it out alive in most meetings), he saw Cedric mudered, and he witnessed the death of the first father figure he had to look up to.
Maybe it is just luck, but he would have to have a crazy guardian angel looking after him. He's been through too much and seen too much to have everything rely on merely luck and friends.

Razorlight_Fan91 How is he a bad judge of character? He chose Ron over Malfoy, which, in itself, shows a very good judge of character. Most of the time, when he bursts into a teacher's office claiming that someone is evil, they aren't. Often, when he trusts someone, they're evil. He sees people as good or evil, no middle ground, and so he can't tell what type of person they actually are. Razorlight_Fan91 And no, he isn't talented at just one or two types of magic. He was able to fight the Imperius curse, which shows talent and drive. Those are both DADA spells, which are the only ones he shows talent for. And growing up a Muggle has nothing to do with it. Hermione grew up a Muggle and she's the best witch they've got.

Quote: Most of the time, when he bursts into a teacher's office claiming that someone is evil, they aren't. Often, when he trusts someone, they're evil. He sees people as good or evil, no middle ground, and so he can't tell what type of person they actually are. I can think of two times Harry actually burst into a room to claim someone was evil, and eventually he was right. In SS/PS Harry said Snape was evil, which was eventually true, just not at that moment. In HBP, he claimed that Malfoy was evil and was trying to kill someone, which was actually very true. In GoF, he came to trust Moody, even though he was Crouch Jr. Remember, though, that Dumbledore also trusted Moody (and Snape). In CoS, he trusted Tom, but he was 12, and Riddle had only showed him kindness. I doubt he even stopped to think that the journal must have been thrown into the bathroom for a reason. Quote: Those are both DADA spells, which are the only ones he shows talent for. And growing up a Muggle has nothing to do with it. Hermione grew up a Muggle and she's the best witch they've got. I knew you were going to mention Hermione... As you know, she reads a lot. She knew more about Harry than he knew about himself. Of course she would be ahead of him in academics as well. Do you like Ron? He and Harry are pretty much equally matched when it comes to academics.

I like Harry because he's so flawed. He's not a poor judge of character, he makes mistakes. Being a poor judge of character would indicate that he would associate himself with people like Malfoy openly and freely, which he does not. If anything, the people he trusts he trusts because they appear trust worthy. I'd have trusted most of them myself, and I'm by no means a poor judge of character...
Harry is still learning his magic, and to compare him to Hermoine is simply unfair; Hermoine is a prodegy. That's like comparing your average music student to Mozart. Harry is progressing at the same rate as the majority of his classmates, and as mentioned, he's on par with Ron who grew up in a wizzarding family.
The best thing Harry has going for him as a hero in the books is that he is so flawed. He makes mistakes, and he needs people to help bail him out of it, which is realistic. It makes for a good story, because Harry has to grow and has to learn to over come his own flaws while on a quest to do something greater. In short, Harry is your average person beneath his magic. It makes hime more accessable as a charater than if he were omnipotently powerful and had no flaws; where eould the story be? He'd have defeated Voldemort and his Death Eaters long ago, and there's be no room for secondary characters, other than to stand in the back ground and gasp "Gosh Harry!" as he saves them time uncountable.
Is Harry a "true hero"? Well, that depends on your defintion of a hero. He's not Superman, and he's definately no Dumbledor. But he's an average boy facing monumental trials, and manages to come out on top through the help of his friends while he strives towards an ideal. I'd definately say that makes him worthy of respect.

I agree with you. Would we be debateing this about Ron? He and Harry are pretty much the same in every way, personality wise. When it comes to talent, all Harry has DADA, and this may be becasue of powers granted to him from the scar, you never know. In the end, it could have been Nevelle (who I like mych more), not Harry. Harry has never been my favorite character, so let him die along with Voldemort.
