Kali was crawling through the tall grasses as she stalked a colorful insect that moved along a small rock formation. The purple cub tried to be quiet but, obviously, was still much too loud not to be noticed. The large insect was scrambling away to safety now, aware that he might be in danger. It was right, of course, though it was not the playful cub that would end its life. When the small animal was about to unfold its wings and fly away, a bird dropped from above and after one quick glance at the striped cub, flew away with the insect in its mouth. “Aww…” Kali said quietly looking up with a frown, suddenly annoyed. “That was my bug.”
She was quite sure the bird had looked at her before snatching away the insect so she was taking the "theft" quiet seriously. The young cub dropped back into a sitting position, quietly eyeing the canopy of the trees as if they had somehow offended her.

"What are you doin Kali?" Nanami appeared so suddenly behind her sister, it was as though she had popped out of thin air. In truth, Nami had been watching her for awhile, and was curious as to what her sister did when she was alone. Kali had just ended up staring at a bug; her detective worked turned out not to be all that exciting as she had hopped. Oh well.
"Mom will be here soon. She wants to talk to us or... something." Her Mom had told her exactly what she had planned for the day, but Nami wasn't exactly the most attentive cub. She figured if it was that important she would have remembered it.
Dauna let out a sigh as she made her way out the den, leaving Kohaku and their two sons behind. Yes, today would be a girls day out with Kali and Nami. The rather spunky lioness had a little less pep in her step since she had her recent litter. She was having the time of her life as a mother, but it was a much more difficult job than she had been expecting.
Something she worried about the most however was if her daughters would grow up respectable in the pride. She had seen so many of the cubs she grew up with leave the pride when they got old enough. She didn't want to even think about when her sons would have to leave the den, much less any of her daughters leaving willingly.
After getting herself a bit worked up, she quickly calmed down when she saw them chatting with eachother a bit further off into the distance. There was absolutely nothing those two could do that would disappoint her, and she was sure that even though she wasn't entirely confident in her mothering skills just yet, they would turn out to be fine lionesses.
"Good morning sweeties." She purred and greeted them both with a gentle nuzzle.

Kali turned to face her sister and sat down before raising her two front paws to explain what had happened.
“I was stalking this really pretty bug and then it started running so I as gonna pounce it…” paws waving in the air, the young cub seemed to be running out of breath now. She did one quick gasp for air before continuing with the most serious expression she could muster. “… and then a bird came down and took it. Really! What does mom want to talk about?” a question that apparently wouldn’t take too long to find an answer.
“Hi, mom!” the purple girl said softly running off to rub her body against her mother’s legs.

Nami listened to her sister without much expression in her face. A bird. Eating a bug. That's what all this fuss was about?
"You shouldn't be pouncing bugs you know." She said this somewhat out of spite. There were some bugs with beautiful colors in their home, something any K'N lioness could appericate. However, Nami was deathly afraid of the creates when a spider landed on her back a couple of days earlier. Disgusting little things they were.
"Oh um.." Nami's words would be cut off when their mom arrived.
"Hi." The little green ball of fluff didn't go to greet her mom like her sister did, but simply continued to sit on her rump.
Dauna leaned down and greeted her daughters nuzzle with a quick lick on the head before patting her off to go sit next to her sister. "Alright girls, I need to talk to you about something very important."
As she spoke, Dauna's voice had a whimsical quality to it. Although the lioness acted quite a bit like a child herself a lot of the time, it meant she knew how to get her kids attention easily. "Being a K'N Lioness is something very special as I'm sure your figuring out, but it's also a huge responsibly."
"I'm sure you'll talk to some lionesses in other clans with strong opinions, but I want to make sure you two understand a few things. Kali can you tell me where your brothers will go when they are adolescents?" She had talked to them about this beforehand, but she had to make sure they both clearly understood their brothers wouldn't stay in the clans den for very much longer. She had seen first hand what happened when a lioness hadn't come clean with her family about the future.

“Okay…” Kali said to her sister with a serious expression, looking somewhat subdued. “I thought that was how you practiced hunting…” But if her sister said so, she wouldn’t do it again. After all, the purple cub tended to trust Nami’s instincts before her own.
Her mother’s question caught her somewhat off guard as she didn’t really remember much about their previous conversation. Her head dropped a little but her dark eyes looked up at Dauna with a hopeful expression.
“They… hum... go somewhere else… in the pride… where there’s… where there are no girls...?” She said tentatively. She hadn’t forgotten that her brothers wouldn’t be around for much longer but it still saddened her to think about it.

"Right! They become Parastar's and live with the other boys in the pride and await a nice girl to come take them back to their den. Just like I did with your Dad." It had been a lot less awkward of a ritual than she had expected it to be, actually. The real awkward part was trying to get pregnant for the first time, but she wasn't about to 'go there' with their talk today.
"Each clan, and even each lion treats boys a bit differently. You like picking on your brothers don't you Nami?"
"Only because they are such easy targets." She grinned rather devilishly.
"But you still love them as apart of the family." Dauna quickly added, regardless if Nami would agree with her or not. "It's our duty to take care of the males. They may be of a lower ranking than us girls, but that's only because they are weaker and depend on us."
Now that she got that out of the way.... it was time to move onto the real reason she brought them out here.
"There is also something really important we need to talk about. Both of your ranks in the pride. Do either of you know how many different ranks there are for girls?"
Nami had been waiting for this for some time now. She was positive that she would be Gasht, just like her mom. Her sister on the other hand, had almost as much white on their coat as Dad or Grandpa. Still, she hoped for her sake that she still made Gasht. The cub really had no idea what the difference was or what any of the other ranks were.... but she knew that Gasht was pretty good and that's all that mattered.
"Uhhh.... 5?" The small cub had no idea, but five just seemed like a good, round number to guess. Maybe her sister would know, she seemed to pay better attention to this stuff than she did.

Kali laughed when Nami spoke. Yeah, she was terrible with the boys… but it was a little amusing. The purple cub drank her mother’s words, sitting straight and nodding to show she was paying very close attention. Ranks? There was Ghast like mommy and Skika or Skikari or something. And then there were the one with really bright pelts and little to none neutral colors. She’d never thought about her own rank that much but she did assume her sister would have a different one. After all, Kali was colorful but her coat color wasn’t really that bright or strong. The strongest color she had was on her mane and tail-tip. And she had a lot of white. She didn’t have that many hopes of reaching the rank Ghast… but they were there, deeply hidden in her little heart.
“I can only remember 3…” she admitted, looking down. Her sister knew two more than her… and Kali had almost just said 5 in order to follow her sister but she just could lie like that. She still felt a twinge of guilt for feeling tempted to do it though.

Dauna's eyes grew big and a grin spread across her face when she heard her daughters answers. "What a bunch of smart girls I have!" She wrangled both of them in with her paws and lovingly nuzzled their faces. "And don't worry Kali, I didn't remember anything but my own rank until I was much older. Your doing great." She was proud of both of them; who would have known they already remembered so much at such a young age?
"So the council decided on both of your ranks last night." Still with them in her paws, she looked down at their eager little faces. "Nanami you'll be a Ghast, and Kali you will be a Shikar-i."
"Yes!" Nanami thought to herself. She always knew she would be a Ghast, but something about having all the official ladies in the council agree upon it made her feel really good.
"We have the same rank Mom!" The little green cub wiggled her bum with excitement.

Kali smiled happily when her mother complemented the two girls, cuddling in her mother’s embrace. But the purple cub’s smile faltered just a little when the she was told the news. It wasn’t exactly unexpected – she did have a lot of white in her and her purple wasn’t really that bright to begin with – but having fears she barely knew existed confirmed as truth made her a little sad. It was official, she wasn’t going to share her mother and Nami’s rank. It wasn’t really that important and it didn’t mean she was going to be discriminated or abused or anything like that. Kali hadn’t expected it to bother her so much.
Trying not to look upset, she smiled at her sister in silence. Her happiness was contagious - Kali truly was happy for Nanami - but it was hard to suppress that hint of sadness and envy she was trying to ignore. She felt guilty for feeling it at all.

"That's right Nanami, and I'm so proud of both of you. Now I need to go find your brothers, you two have fun playing." She knew the limits of a cubs attention span, and if she babbled on it would fall on deaf ears. She smiled as she got up and began to head back in the direction she had come in earlier.
Once Dauna was far away enough from the cubs, she let out a deep sigh. Taking care of her small family was second nature, but Dauna had always been nervous about actually bringing up serious discussions with her daughters. But surprisingly it was... much easier than she had imagined it would be.
"Alright, bye mom!" Nanami turned around to face her sister still, still pumped about the news, when she realized Kali had something of a somber look on her face.
"Hmm... What do those old hags think they are doing, giving us such low ranks, huh?" Nami spoke in a playful tone, trying to cheer her sister up. "When we grow up to be big and strong we can beat them up together, and claim our rightful spots as Rawal!"

“You really do look Rawal, Nami…” Kali said with a bright smile, pawing at her sister. She was glad her mother wasn’t disappointed with her rank even if she was a little herself. At least Nami didn’t seem to care that her sister had received the lowest rank and certainly her brothers wouldn’t either – well, not that it mattered that much anyway.
There was a long way ahead of the young girl but the support she was receiving was enough to convince Kali that she could pull through. She could work hard and earn the most perfect bright coat on her next life. She was sure of it.
“Let’s go find the boys then!” the purple cub bumped her head on her sister’s and started trotting away to the last place where she'd seen the young Parastars. - FIN! -
