Kara was adjusting rather nicely to life in Giza. Ottah was a good master and the older slave Flint was always polite and kind. The blue-eyed slave was instantly fond of them both. Her duties weren’t particularly difficult either which only left one tiny little snag in her otherwise perfect life: the other slave in the house, Akila.

Kara moved with unusual stealth, trying to make herself as inconspicuous as possible as she crawled from one room to the next, peeking around corners and stopping to listen for any signs of activity inside the house. She thought of bringing fresh water for Ottah (a little surprise!) and she was looking for something that would allow her to carry it. The grey-patched slave tried to be silent, to avoid being noticed by Akila. Honestly, the scarred female scared her a little. Kara didn’t have any reason to justify that fear, it was really all down to the other cat’s appearance and expressions. Her furry tufts twitched as the slave took a few more steps. All clear.

Akila's good ear twitched slightly and she sighed, the small huff traveling through the quite house. She wasn't sure why the gray and white cat was trying to be so quiet... it only made is seem more obvious. And the hound worshiping little furball wouldn't be trying to get away, of that the raggedy female was certain.

So, out of sheer curiosity, and a little agitation at the inkling thought that Kara was trying to avoid her... again, the larger female stood and made her way towards the gray kitty.
Annddd.... there she was, creeping down the hallway.
"If I didn't know better I'd think your trying to run away." Akila said, her voice ringing out suddenly in the quiet house, an unamused expression on her face.

Kara whelped as she jumped high in the air (a rather impressive height for a cat that was not particularly athletic), fur standing on end on every inch of her body. The patched slave whirled in the air and the blue-eyed cat landed quietly facing the other slave. It could be an amusing sight even if Kara looked as if her heart was about to give in.

It took a few seconds for the patched slave to regain her composure but she finally found it in her to answer the girl she had indeed tried to avoid.

"Akila." She paused catching her breath before her expression changed to one of dignified indignation. "Of course I‘m not trying to run away. I would never run from my master." It made even less sense when the master in question was Ottah.

“The master has closed for the day. I was going to fetch some fresh water.”

Now, that was an interesting sight. Poor Kara puffed out to kingdom come, it was quite entertaining actually. Akila tilted her head at the mention of her name, then she rolled her golden eyes at the feline's answer. Oh yes, she knew quiet well that Kara would never run away, hound worshiping little puff ball that she was.

Akila wasn't too particularly fond of hounds, though she had made the exception for her master Ottah, who was as decent a hound as she had ever met (not that she had actually met many). Even Akila herself wasn't one to run from what she knew was a good home. So, onto the matter at hand.

"How do you propose your going to be able to carry enough fresh water for Ottah?" the tattered female asked with interest. First Kara would need to find something to carry it in, and Akila seriously doubted Ottah would want any of his medical equipment used.. Though Akila did know of an upturned bucket outside near where she spent what free time Ottah allowed them.

Kara frowned as she licked a shoulder blade and then moved on to the rest of her body with sudden determination as if she couldn’t help but to preen every hair of her patched coat into its proper place. She was usually uncomfortable around Akila and found it terribly hard to have a normal conversation with the other slave without staring at her torn ear and tail. Akila’s very appearance was the very proof that bad things sometimes happened to slaves and while it was easier to simple blame the injuries on the other cat’s attitude, they still bothered the sheltered slave.

“I was looking for something that could solve that problem. I haven’t found anything yet, I was going to try the kitchen next.“ Which didn’t explain why she was skulking about like a slave trying to escape punishment so Kara decided to finish her brief explanation with a half-truth. “It was supposed to be a surprise.”

Akila sighed as the other cat groomed herself and waited "patiently" her 3/4ths of a tail flicking back and forth in irritation. Finally she let out a very audible sigh as Kara turned and she stood up, an eyebrow raised at her excuse for sneaking around. While their master wasn't the heaviest of sleepers, he certainly wouldn't have noticed one kitty walking around. Dragging a pail... well that he would probably notice.

"Surprise eh?" she muttered before shaking her head and looking Kara over as if sizing both her and the validity of her words up. "There's a pail out back." the dark colored female said after what was probably a rather uncomfortable 15 seconds for the patched female.

“Yes… a surprise.” Kara said with a tone that was probably meant to be defiant but which lost considerable impact as the patched cat shrunk under Akila’s silent stare. There was nothing wrong with trying to surprise her master!

“A pail, really?” Kara’s blue eyes widened in surprise as she realized the other cat was actually being helpful. Flint got along nicely with Akila so she had to assume that the reason she wasn’t doing the same was because… well, it was hard to get along with someone who you’re always trying to avoid. “Outside? Can you show me where?”

If the tattered slave was reaching out a paw to her, Kara would gladly accept it. She felt a bit guilty about her attempts at staying out of Akila’s way. Perhaps they could actually have a normal conversation today. It didn’t mean they would become instant friends but maybe they would get to know each other a little better.

Akila cocked her head to the side, her good ear twitching lazily as she regarded Kara for a moment before padding softly past her. Perhaps this would get it through the fluffball's skull that she wasn't going to... beat her up or something. Akila wasn't even sure why Kara was so skittish around her, and could only assume it had to do with her rough appearance.

"Yeah, it's this way." she called over her shoulder and reached up on her hind legs to snag the back door latch and let her weight push the door open, finishing the job with her head she left the door open for the meek girl behind her and trotted out into the yard.

Kara let the other slave lead the way without protest, obediently following after Akila. Of course, there was a small problem with walking behind Akila… it was nearly impossible to keep her bright blue eyes from staring at the other girl’s tail. It made Kara more than just a little uncomfortable and yet she simply couldn’t look anywhere else.

“Thank you, Akila.” She wasn’t used to saying the other slave’s name which felt oddly foreign in her tongue. She hesitated before finally deciding to face the the situation head-on. “Uhm. Mmm. Akila? What happened to your tail? If you ah… don’t mind the question…”

Kara spoke quietly, as neutrally as she could, but it was difficult to hide the sudden curiosity. At the same time she was a little scared of Akila might say next. She was unsure if it had been a good thing to ask, it could be something she’d rather have never know. Still what was done, was done so it was up to Akila to answer her question or not. Hopefully, she wouldn't be offended by it.
