Nudge wasn't the nicest of bucks. He said what he meant, usually in a way other Kimeti found offensive, and so he found himself alone most of the time, which suited his purposes quite well, thanks very much. But lately he'd seen signs of others wandering around his territory--very clearly marked territory, it was, so how they missed the signs was a mystery to the buck--and had set traps to see who it was, precisely, that was ignoring his claim. He'd set the fruit in a pile beside the pond, then hunkered behind a stand of mangroves wide enough to hide his bulk and cast his light blue and brown coat into shadow. Now, to wait and catch the culprit red-hooved.

Meets-the-Sea, being generally a very solitary doe, and not too adept at social interactions, had not noticed the boundaries marking the buck's territory as she made her way meanderingly through the swamp, lost in her observations of nature. It was this that led her to the pile of fruit at the edge of a pond -- she had been following a wild foxbun that had stumbled across her path and, engrossed in watching its funny little skips and hops, had crossed the borderlines of the buck's territory without noticing. Meets was, by virtue of her interest in observing other creatures unimpeded, very good at stalking silently through the swamp. The foxbun, thus, didn't notice her following it, and stopped to eat from a pile of fruit unawares of her presence. Meets stared at the fruit for a moment, confused, and then realization dawned on her face and she raised her head suddenly, looking around for whomever had left the fruit there and scaring off the foxbun in the process.

((Dropping the color because it's hard to read, and I'm blind as it is)) He snarled quietly as the foxbun disturbed his pile of fruit. Didn't the idiotic creature know not to disturb what did not belong to it? He considered lunging for it and using it as a snack, but it spooked and fled, leaving Nudge to look around and see what, exactly, set the stupid creature off. Perchance it was his Kimeti interloper, and that brought a smile to the buck. It was time to deliver the upbraiding the trespasser deserved. He rose from his covert position, looking possessively around the small patch of ground. "Where are you? I know you're there; those moronic foxbuns are easily spooked, but there must be something to spook them." He glared at a patch of dense fern. "Do you know where you have intruded?"

Meets-the-Sea danced backwards on the tips of her hooves at the sudden voice, her ears pressed back against her head in fear. "I...I...I'm sorry!" she apologized to the faceless voice, looking around frantically for the one who had spoken. "I...I was just passing through, I didn't know this was someone's territory!" Meets' tail curled behind her nervously. "P-please don't hurt me."

It was a female, and she sounded frightened, which was the correct response. Still, she was female, so he gentled his tone. Somewhat. "Doe. Show yourself. I do not harm females." He merely yelled at them for being silly enough to walk past clearly marked signs. He supposed he couldn't be too angry about it, though; his mother had the same tendencies, and his father was a bit scattered, as well. At least their children had some senses about them. He stepped from his position, into the weak sunlight so that his brown coat glimmered and the teal and white glowed. He cut an impressive figure when he posed correctly, and this he did, placing his hooves so his shoulders appeared broader and his chest deeper.

Meets stepped forward timidly, tilting her head to look sidelong at the buck as he emerged from his hiding place and into the light. He was imposing, to say the least, and she kept her head down in hopes that he wouldn't see her as a threat. Curious as always, however, she continued to peek up at him from the corner of her eye. "I'm sorry, sir, I was just following that foxbun, and I must not have noticed your territory markers...I get...distracted...sometimes."

He blew out a breath and swiped his front hoof over the earth. "I'l not hurt you, female. It would be dishonorable, especially for such a minor thing. It would also seem that you are not the intruder who has been through here before. No need to fear me, little doe." He lowered his head, trying to seem approachable--for him, anyway--and asked, "Won't you come and introduce yourself?" Nudge stepped back to allow the doe room to enter the area he stood in. "And I apologize for frightening you. I was too abrupt and simply assumed you were the one I was looking for. Please, forgive my rudeness."

Meets stepped forward hesitantly. The buck, while seeming, quite frankly, terrifying at first, was now much less threatening. She supposed she couldn't blame him for acting so bluntly at first -- not having a marked territory of her own, she didn't quite understand the concept of borders and how important it might be to keep them secure. From this buck's reaction to her intrusion, however, she gathered it must be a quite important thing. "Thank you, it's really alright...I didn't notice I was trespassing." She smiled warily up at the buck. "I'm Meets-the-Sea, but you can just call me Meets if you wish. Who is it you're looking for, if you don't mind my asking?"

"I am pleased to meet you, Meets-the-Sea. I am called Nudge." The buck gave the timid doe a smile. "I don't know who, exactly, I'm looking for, only that others have wandered through here enough times without paying attention, and that is something I cannot stand!" He snorted. Being scatterbrained reminded him of his parents--two more oblivious Kimeti did not wander the Swamp! "I have an issue with others coming into something I have claimed as my own. It tends to offend my pride." His tone became sardonic. "Which is something I have too much of, really." His head jerked back, and he said, "Would you care for some berries? I've gathered them already, and it would be a shame to waste them." He motioned toward the pile of fruits he had used as bait, offering them to her as part apology and part hospitality.

Meets found herself chuckling a little at the buck's sarcastic comment. "Surely pride isn't so bad a virtue," she replied, smiling kindly but shyly at Nudge. "I find myself in need of more myself, at times." She bowed her head to the buck. "It's good to meet you, Nudge, and I'm sorry once again for intruding upon your territory. I would love to share some berries with you, since you were so kind as to offer."

"No more need for apologies, Meets. I find remorse spoils the mood berries create when they're ripe and tasty." Nudge, true to his name and his somewhat overbearing nature, moved to the little doe and proceeded to nudge her toward the pile of fruits. "Come, please enjoy. Do you have a pet or familiar to share with?" He peered around the area again, hoping that the foolish foxbun from before wasn't hers; it wasn't polite to consider a friend's pet as a snack, after all. "Pride tends to make one look foolish if he has too much. I think I showed you that. Besides, humble souls are those best loved, I've always thought, because the prideful can boast for hours and the humble can speak together. I could be more humble, but I've no such intentions. Ah, well," he said. "No matter. Let's turn this to more pleasant topics. Are there any berries you dislike?"

Meets looked up at the buck, surprised and entranced by his words. "You speak beautifully, Nudge. It is not many who are so gifted with words." She risked a small, shy smile and accepted the buck's nudging towards the berries. "And no, thank you, I have no creatures of my own. I spend most of my time traveling, and none have yet seen fit to accompany me for long."

He was quite happy at her acceptance of his hospitality. He was closer to wooing the lovely doe. "I am certain one shall bond with you soon. You have a lovely demeanor. Is there a particular pet you would like? A foxbun or owlcat? I myself could see a snake or turtle. Perhaps an eaglehound if I felt compatible." He negotiated a ripe berry to Meets, offering it to her with a lavish bow, bending one leg at the knee and lowering his head and shoulders, hoping to elicit a giggle from his companion.

The corner of Meets' mouth curled up in a bemused smile at Nudge's bow. "To tell the truth, I've never really given it much thought," she responded. "But I suppose an owlcat would be helpful. Or perhaps a songbird, to sing and keep me company on my journeys." She bent down and gratefully took the proffered berry. "The eaglehounds have always intimidated me a bit...but for you perhaps that would be a good thing. A well-trained hound could help guard and patrol your territory."

His smile is bright and softens his harsh demeanor, but he offers it to the sweet female who has so raptly captured his attention.
"An eaglehound would be a spectacular guardian. I may undertake the effort to befriend one someday soon. And I think a songbird for you would match perfectly. Though I do believe a foxbun would be a lovely compliment to you as well."
He wouldn't normally be so flattering, but, well, he likes her.
