Malach wasn't always the surly, menacing brute he is today. When he was young he was a decent slave, not necessarily willing to please, but compliant nonetheless. He was taken from his family at a young age to attend school, which he adapted to quickly. He was not the fastest learner nor the most subservient, but he accepted his lot in life without complaint. Despite being a bright cat, he was a slow learner in most skills, but found his true prowess was in the tournaments, where his strength and speed aided him in becoming a promising fighter. Soon after his cursory slave training was finished, he was sold to a hound named Garai.
Garai continued Malach’s instruction in fighting, but he was also a tyrant, and treated the cat as his own personal whipping boy. Failure in the ring, even as Malach was still learning, meant solitary confinement in a dark chamber for days, and anything but utter deference meant a beating so severe it would take days to recover. In truth however, it didn’t matter how well Malach or any of his slaves obeyed, or how well they did in the arena. If Garai wanted to strike out at something, he always found a reason, and this happened often.
After years of torment, something inside Malach snapped. The bright, quiet tom became withdrawn and venomous, even to the slaves who were his peers. He seemed to take no pleasure in life anymore, and even in his free time he’d retreat to a corner, glaring and brooding. In the arena he changed too; the blows he struck in combat, before meant to bruise and knock out his opponents, now seemed aimed at maiming. He earned himself a reputation for being a brute, and hounds who valued their slaves’ looks hesitated sending them to fight against Malach, lest they return permanently scarred or worse.
Malach, the “angel,” now seemed to have become something of a demon. But for all his rage, it didn’t seem to matter to him whether or not he won the fights. Over the years he seemed to become immune to the painful beatings, both in and out of the ring, and without this as a motivator Garai didn’t know what to do with him. Garai had a reputation to protect as a master, and so he sold Malach, hoping to use the meager earnings to purchase a new slave who hadn’t yet had the spirit beaten out of him.✗ [Others];× × × × × × × × × × × × × × × ×
