Rediscovering the Nature of Falhannah
Kei Aoi's Shikai Training

It was early. Actually, it was extremely early. It was so early that not much Shinigami of the Fourth Division were awake yet. The morning mist covered the peaceful grounds of the Fourth Division, dampening all types of grass and plant. The sky was not yet fully awake, too; it was darkish blue to light one. There were few stars littering around the sky, further implying the age of the day. This chapter of Kei Aoi's encounters was set in a serene part of the Fourth Division where he usually gathered some herbs for his garden (The Verdant Gardens); however, the place was far and was filled with trees of old age.

And he was here to rediscover the nature of his Zanpakuto, Falhannah.

Kei Aoi
Captain, Fourth Division
Sereitei, Soul Society

Kei Aoi entered the serene grounds with a soft sigh. He had been walking from the Fourth Division gardens, which made him make a mental note to himself to have some Shunpo training in the nearby future. However, before that happens, of course, he needed to advance further in many aspects. One of these aspects, it was the aspect of his mastery of his Zanpakuto. Although Falhannah was always obedient to Kei, he knew deep inside that she had been holding all these times - it was as if some kind of barrier were separating both of them. Well, he knew that he had been limited to her all these times but...

"What is wrong, Aoi-sama?" Falhannah called out softly, materializing before Kei Aoi since ages ago. He marveled once again at the beauty of his Zanpakuto. Was this his creation? No, of course not. Although, she was modeled after his loved one that he failed to protect long ago... someone deeply hidden in his protected memories beyond his reach. The Zanpakuto took the form an extremely beautiful maiden wearing a blue, flowing gown. This time though, she topped it with an elegant sea-blue robe that suited it elegantly. Kei Aoi gaped at her for a moment before noticing the Zanpakutou to be staring at him questioningly. "Do you like it, Aoi-sama? I made this... well, you made this, your developments." She said softly, her voice ever-gentle.

"I.. uh..." Kei Aoi uttered, blushing at the same time too. He couldn't even look at her thoroughly and for this, she laughed heartily. "It's... uh... great, Falhannah. It suited you... er... perfectly well."

Falhannah walked over to Kei and then put her right hand against his cheeks. She looked at him and then giggled. "Why look at you, Aoi-sama. You never looked so flushed in your whole life. Well, you had been... for a moment, like when you were receiving training from that handsome man named Kubayashi Kiisho, as I can recall?"

"Hayashi Kiisho!" Kei Aoi snapped at once before stopping himself completely.

Falhannah laughed again. "Oh... right... Kiisho... He's a cute guy, correct?" Falhannah teased, to which did nothing but make Kei redder than ever. "Could you ever be... inclined to the same gender, Aoi-sama?" She asked. This time, she circled Kei like a hungry wolf circling a sheep. Strangely though, the Fourth Division captain, despite having a small control on his Zanpakuto, did not move from his position as if bound by an invisible rope. He looked at her from time to time; however, as she met his gaze, he turned at once.

"Of course not!" He said. "And we're not to talk about my preferences in people here; I'm here to talk about you."

Falhannah stopped in front of him and then turned to face Kei. She smiled once again. "You always had reasons to your actions, Aoi-sama... I always knew."

Kei Aoi looked serious this time. Somehow, after that split-second revelation from him snapped him out of his flustered thoughts. He looked at his Zanpakuto straight-on, without breaking his gaze. He gave her a message. She saw it. Just from their own eyes, they understood each other.

"Kei Aoi never lost a reason to do something that's of worth." Falhannah said, smiling once again. "However, noble be your reasons are, you must understand that fact that I am still the keeper of your most hidden memories. I am a guardian. I am a safe-keeper. I am you.

"Do not misunderstand me. We may be one, yet, we are different, Aoi-sama." She paused for a moment and then stared at Kei. "I have given you a partial part of my powers to you, thus, making you also a key to my most guarded memories. Yet, you did not tap that subject. You respected my existence and my purpose. I know what you want, Aoi-sama. Betterment."

Kei Aoi flinched as soon as he heard the words from her. He had been fearing all these times that she might know. But she knew all these times. Hiding this from her was useless because she right through Kei. "Can there be another way, Falhannah?"

She shook her head. "Long ago, I was created due to your desire to keep your former memories, to guard your true nature. So that, in some way, you will never change even after reaching the afterlife." She said. "You are here because of me. And gaining more of my powers... well... may also lead to more doors to open. I understand that you are a man of honor, Aoi-sama. You promised never to look back again. However, these promises causes risks. Humans are emotionally unreliable. I cannot guarantee."

Kei Aoi gulped. "So, once again, I need to prove my worthy of your power? The power to protect and guard everything that makes up of everything..." He said. Falhannah nodded, turning to face Kei Aoi's Shikai-released blade floating behind her.

"Ugh..."

Kei knelt down and then felt his shoulder drench with his own blood. He looked at Falhannah's ever-calm features and then frowned slightly. Both of them were holding her identical Shikai-released blade. Yet, as far as the battle went, Falhannah proved to be the more superior figure when handling the blades of her cause. That wasn't much of surprised though because she, after all, was the owner of her own soul at that she knows herself better than Kei does. So, did that mean that Kei would be unable to beat her? He thought not... or hopefully, not.

"You've grown weak, Aoi-sama." She said, her voice horribly dismissive and cold. Kei Aoi flinched as he heard listened to her words. "You're no Kei Aoi that was enthusiastic and lively and have the desire to fight and fight and grow stronger. You disappoint me." She added harshly.

Kei Aoi spat a little blood from his mouth and the stood up, fixing his split sleeves by pulling it out from his haori. "You don't understand. Not every fight is about winning... it's about growing."

"No, you are the one not understand, Aoi-sama. In order to protect, know, discover, develop, one must win. It is the very nature of how things are. Why, you've grown horribly sentimental of many things. Ever since you stepped into the shoes of Envy-taichou, you've grown more sentimental by the second. The boy Tomoya did not help either. You forgot your long cause."

Kei Aoi smiled. "Looks like you need to undergo some special lessons with me, Falhannah. And you shall understand... that one must not fight or win just to protect someone." With that, the captain pulled his blade again and then dashed towards his Zanpakuto.

"NO!" Kei Aoi exclaimed.

At once, a circular barrier formed in front of him and then enclosed him in a small space. Then, a violent cascade of water struck the shield out of nowhere and then engulfed the circular coating that Kei created. Inside, the Fourth Division captain grunted as he tried to hold off the shield against the tremendous pressure of the water all around him, which continued to crush its way inside the confinement. A moment later, blood flowed from Kei Aoi's nose.

Someone made a hearty giggle. "You really have the least idea about my powers, don't you, Aoi-sama?" Falhannah's voice emanating in the entire area. "All of my actions have a corresponding consequence. When you use the 'healing dew' ability, you cannot move from one place to another. When you use the 'confinement bubble', you get minor internal damages; don't underestimate the severity of the consequences if you push too much the effects of those abilities." She said, appear before Kei several meters away.

"You won't!" Kei Aoi exclaimed and then waved his sword. At once, the barrier made a powerful force push that caused the water around him to scatter all over. He gasped for air as he felt the blood inside him erupt; he coughed and then spat more blood from his mouth. Falhannah looked at him, unmoved, before walking towards him, raising her sword, too.

"YOU FOOLISH MAN!" She screamed in fury.

Suddenly, another circular bubble formed around Kei. But unlike earlier, this was not his creation. Kei Aoi was struck by panic and was baffled for a moment on what to do. And then...

Snap.

A massive explosion occurred inside of the bubble.

Kei Aoi jumped from where he was formerly at and escaped the fatal attack from Falhannah. He looked at the area he was formerly at and found out a large circular hole, as if the land was cut out from the ground. He breathed in for more air and then felt his right arm, which was bleeding profusely after receiving a fraction of the unknown ability of his Zanpakuto. At once, he pulled out a bandage from a pocket in his Shikahusho and then expertly bandaged the wound in a matter of seconds.

True to Kei's knowledge, he had never seen that attack at all. He thought at first that it was a variation of the Confinement Bubble skill but, obviously, he was badly mistaken. After being enclosed at the circular trap of Falhannah, Kei Aoi found it extremely difficult to move; the reiatsu around Falhannah's barrier prevented him from moving so. Then, it was only safe to assume that the unknown skill was intentionally to hold off as another ability was to be activated. That's the time when the bubble imploded, more like being crushed by a tremendous pressure.

Kei was extremely baffled about the features of this skill. He was not used to implosion. All these times, he was sure that Falhannah's powers revolved only in explosion, not implosion. Her power's nature was outward, just like the feature of the barrier to hold off anything from the outside away from a center point. Still, some of her skills were meant to be outward in motion.

The Healing Dew ability, on the other hand, still showed the same features. The healing ability was meant to remove negative reiryoku from the desired target, ergo the healing process. The removal of the negative energy from a certain wound allows the body to adjust and ultimately heal itself at a faster rate. In the end, the Healing Dew ability was meant to assist the body of the target in recovering by repulsing negative foreign agents out of the patient.

Yet, this time, Falhannah's powers worked in a reversed way. Why?

"Brainstorming, Aoi-sama?" Falhannah's voice coming out of nowhere. Kei looked around only to find her standing beside the circular hole from before. "You must be wondering the nature of this skill that I just showed you. I call this ability Pressure Burst." She said gently, indicating the hole before her.

Falhannah smiled and then looked at Kei Aoi's eyes deeply and, strangely, affectionately. "You've always seen my ability going outward, pushing everything and everyone away, didn't you?" She asked and then without waiting for an answer (for she already knew), continued on. "It is a manifestation of your personality, Aoi-sama. You wanted to protect everything you cared for, and that meant keeping that bad figures away from them" She paused and then raised her hand, revealing the Shikai-released sword. She gave it one short wave and then caused a massive wave of water to surge to her side, away into the scene. "Outward. It has always been that way. You pushed. You were pushing things away to protect. That is your essence."

"Then, tell me, Falhannah." Kei Aoi said in a loud voice. "Why has your ability's nature changed this time?"

The Zanpakuto gave a short laugh and then turned to Kei once again. "My, my, my... The Pressure Burst ability if the manifestation of you reaching out to others, too. You've been lonely, Aoi-sama. And you're so lonely that you wanted to work inwards, not outwards this time. You lacked attention. And through that realization, you discovered that it is still more effective to be recognized if you were to reach out." She said. "Reaching out. It is the complete reversal of your true nature."

Kei Aoi looked at his hand and then thought. Yes, it was completely that way. He reached out to Tomoya. He reached out to Kiisho. He reached out to Kasen, Maikeru and many more. He wanted to be with them. But somehow, he couldn't. He didn't know why but he knew that being with other people gave him peace. "I was trying to reach out." Kei gently said.

"You evolved, so to say, Aoi-sama." Falhannah said. "But you're afraid of what you are becoming. And that...

"Is a lesson to be beaten out of you!" She exclaimed. Suddenly, Falhannah was in front of Kei. Acting out of instinct, the captain jumped backwards to gain distance to the Zanpakuto. Then, he immediately drew a triangular-shaped Kido. "Shitotsu Tansen (Beak-Piercing Triple Beam)!" He exclaimed. Falhannah was only able to gasp in shock as the triangular Kido spun towards her. She was immediately caught by the bane and was sent flying to the opposite direction. Then, Kei Aoi jumped into the air as he waved his blade towards the Zanpakuto.

At once, a massive sure of reiryoku in watery form released from the edges of his blade and then cascaded towards the Zanpakuto. Falhannah, who was still trapped by the spinning Kido, cried in shock as she saw Kei's immediate attack. Then, she was crushed by the raging water attack of Kei.

Kei Aoi jumped from one tree branch to the next as strips of water shot towards him every second and the next. When he stepped on what seemed to be the nth tree, a solitary cascade of water shot through the air and then struck the branch. It broke and Kei slipped down. He let out a yelp of shock before he landed on his back with a loud thud. But wasting no time, he stood up at once and then felt a horribly familiar feeling. "Confinement Bubble!" He cried in horror and at once, a circular bubble formed around him as he waved his Shkai-released blade in front of him.

It was not a second later when a series of thin strips of water rained down upon him. They struck the barrier with utmost force, much like their speed for it was swift. Kei Aoi grunted in pain as the barrier held itself against the banes; a second later, his nose bled. "Damn it!" He cursed and then withdrew the barrier at once, to avoid further damage to his internal system; unfortunately, the attacks did not stop and continued on. Strips of water soared across him, barely missing, and then moved as if looking for him.

Kei Aoi jumped high into the air and then landed on a branch once again. He held out his hand and then said, "Bakudo #26, Kyokko (Curved Light)!" Slowly, his body began to blend into the surrounding area and then disappeared at once. He gasped for air as he was completely invisible and then clutched his wound by his shoulders and waist, which bled profusely. Suddenly, Falhannah appeared behind his visually invisible figure. "Wha-What?" He gasped.

"I am you and you are me. There's no use hiding, Aoi-sama." She said and then mercilessly waved his blade at Kei Aoi.

Luckily, Kei jumped from the branch before the full attack struck him. But it did not mean that he was saved. He groaned in horror as he clutched his wounded arms and fell at the ground once again; this time, the Kido broke and he was visible once more. "Do... do you grow tired?!" Kei Aoi gasped.

Falhannah smiled. "No. And I will never be unless you learn how to fight me."

Kei Aoi spun in the air and then landed at the nearest tree branch. He waved his arms as soon as he landed on his footing and a sudden spark burst in front of him as his Shikai-released blade struck the same-looking blade of Falhannah. She grunted in frustration and then landed next to the captain, slashing her blade wildly. Much unlikely from her appearance, Falhannah's attacks were incredibly strong and constant. And deep inside, Kei Aoi was slowly succumbing to the tiredness he was beginning to feel across his body.

The captain gave one massive strike at her blade and caused her to stagger backwards as the blades collided with menacing force. She managed a small cry of shock and then made steps backward as Kei made one somersault and then landed at the ground. Then, without waiting for a response from her, he threw his sword in the air and then struck the tree branch. Upon landing at the wood, the blade emitted a massive jolt of reiryoku and caused it to make a sudden explosion that destroyed everything around it... along with Falhannah.

"Too slow." Falhannah said softly, appearing right behind Kei Aoi. She raised her blade at the captain's shoulders, attempting to maim her master to incapacitation. "You've always been slow, Aoi-sama." She added and then struck.

"Not quite." He said and then there was a sudden flash of light. Suddenly, the fourth Bakudo, Hainawa (Crawling Rope), sprang from all sides and then bound Falhannah's arms and body. She gasped in shock as she realized that when they were chasing all around the woods, Kei Aoi had been setting up a configured Hainawa and would trap her upon activation. Now, five ropes of reiryoku sprang from then nearby trees and wrapped Falhannah in their grasps. Within moments, she was unable of movement.

Kei Aoi turned to her by this time and then pointed his sword at her. "It is finished. Now, will you lend me more of your abilities?" Kei Aoi asked, smiling vaguely at his Zanpakuto.

Falhannah smiled back.

Kei Aoi

Fourth Division, Sereitei, Soul Society
Fourth Division Grounds [9: 393]

Kei Aoi stood trembling as Falhannah, his ever beautiful Zanpakutō spirit, walked around him again and again. She was in a very deep thought and concentration, much like him, as she supervised their present activity. Several days passed since the Fourth Division captain managed to beat the spirit using a combination of wit, strategy, and Bakudō; ergo, she agreed to train him one of her newest abilities which she showcased earlier, Streamline Banes. She even promised to him that if he learns it as fast as thought of, she would teach him another one. But Kei knew all too well that Falhannah's ways were as unstable, difficult, and critical as they moved on from nature to the next.

"You need to focus, Aoi-sama..." She repeated for like the nth time since the training began that day. She continued circling him as the captain stood in the middle of a shallow pool of water about ankle-deep. His face, completely flustered because of the concentration, turned red as ever as he thought of the points that his mentor said to him. "The nature of the Streamline Banes are a combination of reaching out and protecting. It's like a hybrid of the Confinement Bubble and Pressure Burst abilities... but much more smaller and faster in scale and statics. But above else, remember, that it is one of the most dynamic abilities that I possess in my arsenal. You must..." She was cur short by Kei's grunting.

"Stay quiet, Falhannah...! It's difficult!" He growled in frustration as the pool around him stirred slightly. "I'm about to boil myself with all this reiryoku releasing out of my body!" He added with a sigh. True to his statements, it had been several hours now that Kei had been releasing massive amounts of reiryoku to conjure the ability as Falhannah suggested. But having the nature of a watery Zanpakutō, massive releases of reiryoku was very dangerous to Kei because it could be enough to cook him out because the raw energies heat up his entire body as fast as water. Already approaching his boiling point, Kei's body was now beginning to smoke along the sleeves and legs but otherwise he was sweating heavily. But these were little of his concern for they had been training all day and still all he could do was stir the water at his feet.
