Classes were just starting up again after a slightly chaotic holiday break (well, okay, most of the chaos had occurred on Chistmas Eve, but still), leaving Simon Ferris with little room to focus on much else besides reading semester syllabuses, getting his textbooks squared away, and getting lost in parts of campus he hadn't had the chance to get lost in during the fall. There wasn't much going on in the way of senshi excursions. When he had a choice between homework and patrol, he always chose homework: college mathematics involved much less physical and emotional turmoil than getting chased by a Negaverser did.

His senshi phone still did ring once in a while, however. Sometimes Castor wanted to drag him to the red light district again. Other times Merope wanted to go on an adventure across the still-frozen roofs of Destiny City's buildings. So it was a bit of a pleasant surprise when one day he was greeted with Sailor Alcyone's voice on the other line, this time with no emergencies or injuries to address. She just wanted to talk about something whenever it was a good time.

So, in typical neurotic-preparation-for-a-guest fashion, Simon had set to work tidying up the dorm. This basically amounted to picking up a couple of random chip bags and fixing up the meager furnishings he had for the place, which ended up taking a grand total of about twenty minutes of his time. The rest of his wait was spent sitting on one end of the sofa, idly wondering if he should have gone out to the kitchen and made a lunch for them or something.

"See you soon!"

Alba allowed her phone lid to snap to a close and slip back into subspace. Much like Simon, the Costa Rican's nights were consumed with essays and tedious note-taking. Very rarely did she go out to patrol on a school night, and when she did, it was always with the company of another senshi. She had taken time out in her day schedule to train on her own when her body could handle it and her work-load was low, but for the most part, her days and nights have been the most uneventful in what seemed like at least a few weeks. She remembered the last time she saw Atlas and the rest of the team in that tiny wooden cabin, and more importantly, what brought them there to begin with.

The idea alone was mind boggling. It was hard for Alba to wrap her head around the mere thought of space travel without the aide of a rocket, or to be able to cruise past their own gravitational pull around the sun. If scientists haven't done it before, how could they? Magic can only go so far .....right?

A worrisome expression settled across her face as she stood up from her desk and pushed the chair in. Her hand reached for a sweater that had been dangling from her bed, and after making sure that she had her keys and a regular cell-phone, she walked out of the suite and locked the door behind her. She wasn't sure where either of her roommates were, though she had appreciated the quiet morning their absence had provided.

Alba walked past Simon's dorm and turned a corner that revealed a community room, complete with a few couches, a table, a tv nestled in the top-right corner of the ceiling for students to use to their leisure if they didn't already have one in their rooms. She spotted Simon seated on one of the sofas, idly playing with his hands as he waited for her arrival. It was a welcoming sight to see that he hasn't changed too terribly much since she first met him.

"Hey!" She greeted as she leaned forward to give him a hug before sitting down beside him. "Thanks for taking time to meet with me. How are you doing? I'm sorry I don't call more often. School's been busy, and so have been...other stuff, as you know."

Simon gave a quiet "Hi," in response, returning the hug as best he could from his sitting position on the couch. It was admittedly a little bit awkward due to the fact that Alba's chest was pressing a bit shamelessly into the side of his face, but fortunately he was the type to keep silent and endure without making an a** out of himself. He'd gotten mostly used to the fact that her upbringing gave her a different definition of personal space than he was used to -- though that didn't stop him from being caught off-guard with it now and again.

"Well, you're right next door, so it isn't really that difficult to set a few minutes aside once in a while," he replied, with a sheepish smile. "It's not all your fault, I should probably call more often." Not that he had any idea what he could call to talk about these days. Hi, Alba, had any near-death experiences lately? "I'm okay, considering the whole... well, everything that's been going on -- but you said you had something on your mind, what's that about?"

Alba really was lucky that she had such a polite and caring friend in Simon, as she was completely oblivious to any personal boundaries she might have been crossing with her overtly friendly hug. It was never her intention to make her friends feel uncomfortable, and she'd more than likely become embarrassed and reclusive for a few days should she find out that, despite all of her best intentions, she was.

"Yeah," She agreed sheepishly. "There really isn't a good excuse. Life's just been flying so quickly, and it's more difficult to get around with two roommates to look out for." By the end of the semester in the Crystal Academy, she'd even gotten used to not worrying about her roommate catching on at all, considering she was the one and only Sailor Bellatrix. It might even be safe to say that she'd become lazy in those last months of school when it came to masking her identity within their dorm. Once she moved to Sovereign Heights, she had to start completely over and find a safe route to get in and out through her window without making any noise.

"Well," She began, unsure where to begin. "You know how Carter spoke to us about the star? He's beginning to talk more about it, as though he's been there a few times and it's really beginning to worry me. He normally drops his ...um...flights of fancy, for lack of a better term, after a while. This has been growing."

"You think maybe he's stressed out and retreating to a fantasy world? Should we do something for him?"

Two things had been made very clear to Simon: One, that Alba genuinely cared about Carter and was worried for his well-being. Two, that she was still in denial of space travel, and had obviously made no further attempt to connect with her power signature.

"I'm kind of glad I'm not dealing with my old roommates anymore," he said with a bit of a pained grin. His roommates had been sort of terrible. The militant dorm life of Hillworth had been sort of terrible. When he'd transitioned between the boys' academy to Sovereign Heights, he had been utterly shocked by the leisurely atmosphere and the amount of personal freedom he had by comparison. It was something that he was still sort of getting used to, even after one semester -- a life without fear of punishment of some kind hanging over his head.

He could pick his own classes. He could pick when to have lunch, he could pick his own curfew, the lights weren't automatically shut off at a designated time. He didn't have to deal with any of the rowdiness and violence he had grown to expect right after waking up in the morning. If it weren't for the very base similarities in structure between the two places, Simon would have been at a loss for what to do.

Simon turned a bit to give Alba her full attention, and as she went on she'd be disappointed to notice that she wasn't garnering the reaction she was expecting. He didn't look worried. Or at least, he didn't look worried about Carter. He was looking Alba straight in the eye even as her last question rang through the air, his expression a blend of slightly confused... and slightly concerned.

For her.

The room was silent for a few seconds, and then it stirred again as Simon drew in a deep breath, readying himself for what he was going to say. He looked at his hands, as if considering whether to do something with them -- and decided against it, folding them in his lap again. "I..." he tried, and it ended up being a bit of a false start, "well, here's the thing... I mean, you really haven't at least tried it yet?"

He looked back at her, somber conviction on his face.

"It's real, Alba. I know it's hard to believe, but it's one hundred percent real."
PostPosted: Mon Jan 17, 2011 4:28 pm

His silence didn't faze her, or at least, it hadn't yet. She assumed that at its worst, Simon hadn't heard anymore tales of Merope and was only just then privy to that information and needed a few moments to think on it and react accordingly. Alba was happy to wait for him to come to his own conclusion, though when he finally spoke, it caught her off guard.

"What are you talking about?"

Alba was perplexed, and expressively so: her knitted brows looked as though they could almost touch were they just a few centimeters longer. Simon was usually one of the more grounded people she knew in Destiny City, and whether that was because he maintained a "play it safe" philosophy and hardly got into trouble when he was the only person in the equation or not, it didn't really matter. At the end of the day, if she needed to sit down and express her concern over an unrealistic obsession, he should be the one to realize along side her how impossible such a feat sounded and how unhealthy it is for someone to obsessive over it. She shook her head in disbelief.

"It makes no sense. How can we go into space without a ship? How can we breathe without oxygen? There's magic, and then there's traveling light years in a span of a few seconds." Still, she could feel his somber eyes pierce through her denial.

"It makes no sense." She repeated again, pleading.

Simon didn't waver. In the face of Alba's apparent logic and disbelief he probably should have crumbled, but his expression remained the same, if not perhaps tinged with a tiny bit of hurt for a few seconds. "No," he replied, "it doesn't make any sense. But neither has anything else, for a very long time. I... don't know if I can say this right, but..." And then he paused, glanced downward again, his hands forming an iron grip over each other. "I'm starting to think this whole thing is working out to be something bigger than us. Older than us. So of course it's not going to make any sense at first."

And then, Simon continued with what he probably should have said right at the start.

"I was able to do it a couple of weeks ago."

As much as Alba was determined to disbelieve, maybe she'd relent a bit hearing that. And Simon was no prankster, either: he was still dead serious, but in a way that was oddly sad for her, as if she was missing out something more personally profound than exploring the final frontier. "If there's something wrong with Carter... then there's something wrong with me. But if you still don't believe us, I can show you."

"What...?"

Alba was at a loss. It had taken her a long time to really accept her status as a senshi, and what kind of responsibility that had implied. It's not that she didn't enjoy drifting out of reality every now and then; she had a creative soul, and with that came the mind of a dreamer. She had aspirations, she's had the occasional and self-indulgent day-dream when she found it impossible to concentrate in class. When she slept, it rarely felt like a blink of an eye.

She knew what they were, though, in the end: simply dreams and fantasies. Alba could wish with all of her might for the ability of flight. Transforming may take her a few steps closer to that desire, though the ground is never too far off from each leap. Alba was also aware that Simon knew all of these things and harbored that harsh reality more than she ever had in her life.

She couldn't break away from his eyes. "I......" Her voice faltered. She could not accuse him of lying. She couldn't ever accuse him of something so mistrustful.

So she hung her head, letting her hair cover her confusion. "....I don't know what to say."

"And that's okay." Simon's hands unraveled themselves, and one of them lifted up to gently rest itself on Alba's shoulder, brushing some of her hair out of the way while doing so. "I know it's a lot to take in, and I know it's not very realistic to expect you to sit down and assume it's all true. But please try to trust me on this." In retrospect, saying all of this was sort of strange to him. Wasn't he in her shoes just a little over a year ago, when he was trying to understand that he'd become a senshi? To this day he still wasn't entirely sure what that meant -- and he was about to try and show Alba something that gave the whole thing an entirely new meaning.

"You can see it for yourself if that's what it takes," he continued. "But if you're not ready to try it out, I can take you with me to Atlas." With that, his hand left her and he stood up, looking at her expectantly to follow.

Simon's hand was a reassuring touch against her shoulder, and Alba couldn't help but lean against it as he spoke. This wouldn't be the first time he'd encourage her to try something that was completely out of her comfort zone, though to be fair, the last time resulted in the newly learned ability to leap to the tallest of buildings. She remembered how terrified she was, teetering over the edge of the roof that belonged to the Destiny City Library.

In the end, though, she had clasped her fingers around his and made the leap and survived to tell the tale. Granted, jumping off of a building and potentially star-trekking around the universe were two very different things, and the latter was just a little difficult for Alba to swallow.

She took a deep breath before looking up. Space was a frightening thought for her, and this fear played a big part as to why any real attempts were never made to call her star. "I suppose....if this does work, I'd rather not do it alone the first time."

It was about as much of an acceptance as Simon was going to get from the stubborn girl. Alba pushed herself off the couch and joined him, closing his room's door behind shut.

Immediately after entering the room, Simon grabbed a spare blanket that was folded on the end of his bed, and tucked it into the crack under the door. "I have to power up in order for this to work," he explained. "Maybe you should too, just to be on the safe side." The blanket-under-the-door method was a tried and true technique to dampen any sound that might have come out of his room... and with Simon having just led a girl in there, he knew exactly how it must have looked to anyone in the commons who might have noticed.

But it was, in all sincerity, for the sake of blocking out the flashy lights that appeared whenever he transformed. Which he then did, summoning his henshin pen and muttering his phrase, pointedly ignoring the fact that he was briefly treating Alba to a silhouetted naked version of himself (again).

"Okay," he said. "Let's see..."

Atlas then realized that his bed was the only piece of furniture in his room that could seat more than one person. He stared at it for a moment, as if trying to will it to become a more appropriate piece of furniture, before giving in and sitting down on it, gesturing for Alba to come and sit next to him.

"It's easier if you can relax," he began to explain. "Carter didn't really explain this part very well... but it's like, there's really more to the world around you than what you think there is. And if you open your mind to it, you can sort of hear it." There was a bit of a pleading expression as he spoke, silently asking if he was making any sense at all -- at the same time he slowly closed his eyes, trying to relax himself. Otherwise they weren't going anywhere.

While most girls would have given a long side-glance at the towel stuffing, Alba instead noted how clean and tidy Simon kept his dorm. She understood his situation all too well, and would have most likely done the same thing if Gloria didn't listen to her Lucha music so loudly and so often during the day. Alba never had to worry about how much noise was emitted from her room, as intense Mexican Thrash Metal would be playing only a few feet away and muffle any out.

Of all things to be feeling on edge about, though, was his suggestion to powering up. "Are there youma up there?" It was a silly question, but one had to be sure if they were going to be battling against space monsters or not. The more obvious answer would have been the need for two powered bodies to make the transfer easier, but as it was, Alba wasn't thinking very clearly and was beginning to show more signs of a nervous Simon than her usual confident self.

Still, transform she did, with all its twirls and sparkles that came with it; it was a wonder that the Mau weren't secretly apart of the Village People, for all that glamour and stage presence. With every ribbon and accessory in place, Sailor Alcyone smoothed down the pleats to her skirt and sat down next to Atlas.

"I admit, it's a little hard to relax...I haven't really done this before." She mumbled, for the first time feeling a bit embarrassed. "I might have heard something before, but it kind of startled me. I might have thrown the phone across the room. Though....I'll try."

With that said, Alcyone did the one thing that has helped her relax before in the past: she moved her hand until it was touching besides Atlas's, and interlocked a pinky finger for good measure.

"Oh, no." Atlas managed to chuckle a little at the question, in spite of himself. "No youma. No Negaverse at all. It's completely safe, I promise." He shuffled a bit to the side of his bed so that Alcyone could at least have a little bit of personal space while she sat down. Meditation seemed to dictate the need for a wide breadth of breathing room in order for it to work, but unfortunately space was a bit limited unless they wanted to sit on the less comfortable floor.

Also, Alcyone continued to have different ideas about personal space, and sat close enough to him that their shoulders would touch if he so much as leaned to the side a couple of inches. And their hands were touching. Her pinky finger was wrapped around his. She was doing this on purpose.

This must have been making her more nervous than he initially thought. Honestly, he didn't blame her. It was magical space travel. Everyone was going into this having absolutely no idea what to expect, if it even worked at all, and that thought alone was scary enough that he was surprised he'd been able to manage his first trip by himself. Wordlessly, Atlas responded by lifting his hand up, but only so he could gently lace his fingers in between hers -- and he instantly felt a lot better for it.

"Don't try to think about anything else," he said, his voice lowered so it was just barely above a whisper. "It's sort of like background noise... it's always been there, but you've always been tuning it out without knowing it." Atlas wasn't so sure his descriptions were doing it justice, but he couldn't think of a better way to describe it. Still, though, he was able to retrace those steps back to the right state of mind: his awareness of the room around him slowly fell away, making room for the subtle resonance of the universe to flood in and gently overtake his senses.

The only thing that could even begin to compare was being submerged in water, with the gentle rush of the current harmonizing with the sensation of one's pulse rushing through their ears... and out of the depths of space one note called out to him like some sort of cosmic whale song, as instantly familiar as his own reflection. He'd found it again. He couldn't stop himself from breaking into a small smile, as his phone appeared in his free hand and he flipped it open as quietly as he could.

"Are you ready?"
PostPosted: Tue Jan 18, 2011 11:12 am

As a little girl, Alba had been raised by a very hands on approach between her parents and abuelos. She had grown and formed her own social tendencies through the delicate and subtle hands and arms and embraces of the people she loved, and on the way learned to reciprocate those traditional gestures. It was unheard of to not embrace the close friends that surrounded your life, or to kiss their cheeks and foreheads when greeting or bidding good-bye. It was an intimate community, and one that was hard to let go when she moved away to pursue a higher education within established universities of the United States. It was even more difficult to tone down her love of people, as it came quite clear that what was normal practice in her family and home was a bit of a stigma in this foreign country.

Still, more often than not do her habits re-surface among her established friends of Destiny City, whether it's from becoming more comfortable around them or from feeling a strong emotion of some kind, such as excitement or suppressed maternal instincts. In this case, Alcyone was overwhelmed by how vulnerable and anxious she felt on top of Atlas's bed, waiting for a dramatic event to take place. She didn't know how it was going to happen, how fast it would take or if it would even hurt in the process; her only knowledge was that it was far away, and it was new and strange and there was no excitement for it just yet.

She had to go into it slowly, like testing out a pool with a toe before jumping in.

Atlas's hand made a world of a difference to her nerves, however, and she gently squeezed his fingers in appreciation. Along with the aide of his voice, Alcyone managed to breathe in deeply and exhale out her nervousness, most of her attention focused on her hand-hold and his softly spoken words as white noise. Her heart beat quickened as a different tune, fuzzy at first, grew clearer the longer she concentrated on it. It was a familiar melody, even more familiar than when she briefly heard it a few nights ago and had, as a result, pushed it away.

This time she could almost feel every note like a vibrato on a string, slowly played by the bow of a lone cello. It was deep and honeyed, welcoming and heart-breaking, and it called to her.

Though still afraid, she put up a front in order to move forward. If she didn't go now, she'll likely never will. ".........Yes."

"Okay," he nodded, firming his grip on Alycone's hand, "let's go." And without sparing another moment, Atlas dialed for home.

The sensation of being pulled through pace wasn't painful at all, miraculously enough -- but that didn't mean it wasn't its own brand of overwhelming. The very second he pushed that button the both of them were drowned in a blinding easter-green light, completely consumed by it, almost losing their sense of self as they were briefly absorbed into the fabric of space. Fortunately, the sensation only lasted but a second... and then it was abruptly replaced by a violent shift in air pressure that mercilessly assaulted the ears.

Which Atlas had completely neglected to warn Alcyone about.

s**t.

His arms instinctively closed themselves around her waist and pulled her in close -- both to stabilize himself and support her. The air was jarringly thin, and as his eyes peeled open he could recognize the sights around him: the cool fog, the large stone walkway, the orchard of alien-yet-familiar trees, the scores and scores of overturned handcarts. They'd appeared right about where he had left off last time, near the large doorway to the massive stone tower that easily dominated the rest of the sights around them.

Struggling to stay collected against the sudden vertigo, Atlas walked the both of them over to one edge of the entryway so they'd have a wall to lean against as he coaxed Alcyone to sit down. "Don't panic, you're fine," he was saying, albeit a bit pleadingly. "I'm sorry, I really should have remembered, but I promise it's okay. Just breathe slow, and you'll get used to it."
