There's fantasy and realty definitions. I'm separating them by color.

The main difference between the two is the presence or lack there of a soul/spirit.

Zombies are the walking dead, which is different from the living dead (though it sounds an oxymoron). Zombies are dead vessels. They have no soul, no spirit, no ba, no ka, no whatever your beliefs call it. Something, whether it's a virus or some outside supernatural force or radioactivity crap, has sparked "life" back into the their hind-brain, particularly the cerebellum and medulla oblongata, giving the body the ability to move about, but also giving it back the primitive drives such as fight/flight and metabolism, hunger... How much "power" is going to those areas determines what kind of zombie you're dealing with. For example, if more juice is going to the cerebellum then the zombie has better balance and coordination, giving you the "running" zombie-- the most terrifying able to run at top speed for long periods of time without consideration to muscular strain or damage. Speaking of damage, zombies have no concept of pain and continue to rot through both exposure and their own metabolism (if they don't eat, their stomach will eat itself and contaminate the rest of the body destroying it -- the Zombie Famine Theory).

Mummies are the living dead. This means their bodies are host to a soul/spirit/ect. This extends to other beings, thus what makes mummies unique is how the preservation of their body before reawakening. It does not rot like zombies'. It goes through a state of decay brought on by the methods of mummification. For whatever reason, and how can be just as diverse, a spirit has reinhabited the body. Sometimes, the spirit reawakens the entire brain or can control the use of certain areas. Other times, supernatural means are required such as sacrifices or reaquiring "lost parts". Either way, the functions of the body are not as extreme as a zombie's. Though all drives have been reestablished, the inhibition have also, so they can tell themselves not to gorge on food. They can access memories; though argument states that zombies can perform common tasks their previous existence once performed on a habitual basis, it is no the same. Mummies can remember and even feel emotions. Usually, it was emotions that made them what they are.

The most worrisome difference between the two is a mummy cannot make another mummy. But a zombie can make another zombie. A mummy can also will itself back into the state of death. When its purpose is fulfilled, it will die. Zombies, not so much.

As far as reality goes, none of the above exists. Mummies are corpses that do not have any life in them at all. Mummy has two definitions. 1) A corpse that was purposely preserved by a society's mortician, and 2) a corpse that was preserved by its environment. The first is used primarily for archeology, the other for autopsy. Zombie is a state of being in reality. Arguments of their physical existence still stand due to hoodoo (not voodoo, there is a difference that's too complicated to explain right now) and rumors surrounding third-world disease. To be a zombie is to be exhausted and running on your last leg, the last bit of energy you can muster.

As far as having more power or control, mummies may have more control of themselves and even the ability to access supernatural abilities, but I'd be more afraid of a zombie; it's their lack of control that makes them the stronger enemy. A mummy may not have any intention of harming you in particular. Zombies, however, don't discriminate; if it lives, it's food. The problem with zombies is the Horde Concept-- where there is one, there are many, and they are all after you. Worse, they are "contagious." As long as the hind brain is intact, a dead body (or even a severed head) will become a zombie once "infected".

Zombies tend to be recently dead so are made of rotting flesh. Mummys however are long dead and are there for made of bone and some flesh rapped in bandages.

Mummys are cursed dead ancient rulers that can attack people. But you cannot become a mummy if one bites you.

Zombies are undead beings who eat flesh and a bite can turn you into a zombie thus spreading infection.
