The school play had been less than stellar. Oh who was Maritess kidding, the audience had been more interested in the fight that broke out rather than the actual play. Not that she could blame them, what with the cast forgetting their lines or mixing them up and missing their cues and just. The winged vampire let out a heavy sigh instead of the scream that was lodged in her throat. It had been frustrated for Tess, even if her own performance wasn't anything to write home about, she still thought she did better than the others. Not that she would ever admit it out loud.
Times like these, Tess needed to vent. And while some might go through destruction of private property, Tess was a little to conscious of pumpkin seeds spending so she sang instead. Taking her EYEpod from her drawer, she slipped the earbuds on and headed outside. Why outside? Her robocorn liked to join in when she sang, and while adorable, the minipet was unfortunately tone deaf. And Tess didn't need any more reminders about the play.
For the first few songs, she only hummed along, trying to keep her voice down. But when she was near the reaper dorms, the song she had rehearsed for days for the audition came up. Compelled to prove to herself that she wasn't completely terrible, she began to sing aloud.
"This is Halloween, this is Halloween, everybody make a scene. In this town, don't we love it now, everybody's waiting for the next SURPRISE!"

Nyyrikki was just coming down the stairs of the dorms. The afternoon was warmer today, so his usual hoodie had been left behind. Instead, he wore a plain black tee-shirt with his pin clipped hastily too his jeans. Around his right arm, glinting softly in the light, was his chain. It left gaps in which the dark, shadowing marking of its magic's residue could be seen. Not to mention it covered his hands.
With one hand in his pocket and the other fingering the hair on the side of his head, he walked out of the dorm, on his way to perhaps find something edible in the cafeteria. He was stopped short, however, by a mysterious voice not far away. He blinked orange eyes and backed up against the wall, hoping to hear a bit more before he was seen. Just to get an idea of what he was dealing with.
Singing. Hrm.
He stepped aorund the corner to be faced with a ghoul he did not know. Well, half a ghoul he did not know. Tilting his head casually to the side, he questioned without salutation. "That's a song from the play that was just held, isn't it?"

Large, leather wings stopped beating for a fraction of a second the moment Maritess heard a voice. A voice that was clearly not hers. That fraction of a second wasn't enough for her to fall to the ground, but it was enough to have her falter in mid-flight. With a slight wobble in midair, she turned towards whoever had asked while she removed her earbuds.
"U-um, yes," she squeaked, then coughed as if to clear her throat to answer with a clearer voice, "Yes, it was. Did you watch the play?" Tess asked the boil she didn't know. Before realizing what a completely stupid question that was. Obviously the boil had seen it since he recognized the song. Oh and the fact that attendance was mandatory. Really now, Tess, where is your common sense?
"I-I mean did you enjoy it?" She hastily corrected herself, hoped that he did. If he didn't, Tess hoped he didn't recognize her without Amrita sitting on her shoulders. Then again, how many leg-less, winged vampires were there in school?

Her faltering flight did make his heart jump a little, if only because he didn't want to see a ghoul fall on her face because he'd asked a question. Before he could leap forward to help her, however, she'd corrected herself, and he was left watching her without having moved at all.
"Actually, I just arrived recently so I sort of... ah... excused myself from attendance. Y'know. In order to get a feel for the school." Really, he'd just wanted to move around and explore, not be confined to a seat where he'd likely be unallowed to talk. He'd heard that he'd missed quite a lot, which was disappointing. "I heard the song while I was dodging gnomes and teachers. It's pretty cool."
A small smile touched his lips and he waved a shadow-y colored hand a fraction. "I'm Nyyrikki, by the way."

Tess breathed a sigh of relief. At least her pride was salvaged to a degree. "You didn't miss much, play-wise. The audience put on a more interesting show," She shook her head, a wry smile on her lips. "You snuck out and managed not to get caught?" she sounded supremely impressed by this feat. Particularly that he had the guts to go through with it. Succeeding at it was the icing on the cake as far as Tess was concerned. "You must be really good at battles," she concluded.
At the introduction, she automatically offered her hand to him (it was ingrained in her, she can't kick the habit. Not that she wants to), "Good to make your acquaintance, Nyyrikki. I'm Maritess, but you can call me Tess. It's shorter."
Way to state the obvious, Tess.

DarkHeartedSorrows Nyyrikki shrugged sheepishly. He didn't really think he'd done anything special. "I suppose that this," he said, melding into the shadows in a quick flash of black wisps and reforming slowly in the exact same spot, "helps a bit. I can't do it for long though." He frowned unhappily. Being able to hold a meld would make a lot of things easier. Like ducking out of boring classes. That would be really jacking helpful.
"Tess is indeed shorter," he chuckled. "If you'd like, you could call me Nyyri or Rikki." He tucked his hands in his pockets and tilted his head, examining her. "Do you sing often? You're pretty good." He himself couldn't sing a lick. He could play the drums like nobody's business, but he could not at all get a single beautiful note to leave his rough vocal chords. But, there wasn't really a scary element to a singing Grim Reaper, he supposed. Unless he sung ballads about his victims' deaths. Huni Pi The winged ghoul let out a small gasp of surprise when the reaper boil seemingly disappeared into the shadows. She'd never seen anyone do anything of the sort, barring their Headmistress. Not even during the shadowmancy class. At most their shadows separated but that was it, it was nothing like what he'd done. "I-I'm sure you'll be able to learn how to maintain that form longer," she smiled, "U-um, the Headmistress Hellma did have a shadow-related class once. M-maybe when she opens it again, you can sign up?" she suggested.
A faint blush, or the undead's equivalent of one, suddenly tinged the apples of her cheeks and she was unable to look at the other boil directly. Her crimson eyes instead settled on his shoes. "R-Rikki then, a-and I don't sing often, only during the Battle of the Bands we held earlier in the school year." DarkHeartedSorrows He looked at his shoes when she gasped. All the reapers in his family could do it, so it didn't really seem like much special to him. He did it without even thinking in most cases. "Y'think? Is she a good teacher?" He didn't have much regard for teachers. They got in his way and tried for force him into listening and learning and just... augh. It was a mess all around. He was never good at actually caring about class, and he had a pile of unfinished homework sitting in his dorm to attest to that. Sometimes when he got bored, he would pick it up, but then he'd promptly feed it to a kushi.
"Aw! There was a battle of the bands?" He legitimately sounded disappointed as he looked back up in surprise. He must have arrived just a little too late. What a shame, he'd have loved to join a band and showed off a little of what he'd taught himself in his room whenever he was angry at his parents - which was often. "How'd your band do? Did you have a good drummer?" Maybe he'd find some other talent in this school and expand his drum horizons. Huni Pi Tess canted her head in thought, "She wouldn't be Headmistress if she wasn't. But she was," she paused to make a quick glance at their surroundings. When she was certain there wasn't any spying gnomes or any faculty member nearby, she leaned closer "Kinda scary and cruel. Especially with punishment. She has this, um, place in her office called the Princess Corner," she shuddered, having actually seen the Jack-damned thing.
At the reaper boil's disappointment, the winged ghoul tried to suppress a wince and a cringe. Still, a tiny twitch appeared at a particular memory that played in slow motion, namely the one where a guitar smashed right into her jaw. "Y-yeah, we had one. We might have another one come the next school year? Who knows. But we got knocked out during the preliminaries. The other band just destroyed us," The word Literally going unsaid as she answered dejectedly, pale fingers absently brushing along her chin. "I haven't seen Iggy around, she's our drummer, but I'm sure you'll see Lizzy around?" she told him, sounding hopeful, "She was our guitarist." DarkHeartedSorrows He shook his head. "She could be headmistress just because of the cruel punishment," he pointed out. If you can run a school, no one gives a jack if you can actually teach. Being able to give education is just a plus. "But I might have to check it out, I guess." He was obviously uncertain. Did he want to be in the room with a headmistress that had a princess corner? No, he probably didn't. Would he do it for the greater good of ducking out of other bad situations? He might. He just might.
"Aw, I hope there's another. Sucks that you got knocked out, but if the competition's fierce, it's fierce." He was visibly excited by the idea of a raw, uncut battle of the bands. Young kids on their instruments, just ripping it up. That's how it should be. "I'll have to keep an eye - ear? - out for them. I'd love to meet some kids with talent." Even though Tess said the drummer wasn't around, he kind of hoped she'd show up. He wondered what a ghoul drummer might bring to the table. Huni Pi "I-I guess you have a point, but I've only been in a few classes so I can't really say for sure which teachers are good and which aren't," she didn't want to discourage the boil from attending classes. The last thing she would want to be was a bad influence. She was raised to be a proper ghoul, and a proper manananggal. But then, wasn't rebelling against her upbringing one of her goals since being enrolled?
Tess tried to force an encouraging smile on her face. The boil must enjoy battles and he obviously was just being modest about his abilities if he was eager for another Battle of the Bands. "Do you play an instrument? Or sing, then? O-or are you in a real band?" she asked, "I-I'm not sure LIT! will ever compete in another Battle of the Bands. Maybe after I get a Battle Pass from Gym and figure out how to work the microphone so it does more damage to the other team." Tess was certainly unaware that Nyyrikki didn't know that the focus had been on the Battle as opposed to the Band aspect.

Will spruce this up later, when I'm not trying to just get everything ready for shutdown
failurexstereo 11:44 pm If only Tess knew that there could be little bad influence in a boil who already avoided classes as much as possible. Maybe one day she’d see him skip out just for the sake of not learning, and would realize she had nothing to worry about in regards to her own influence. He furrowed his brows as she began to talk about the contest in a very unfamiliar way. Then it clicked mentally, with a facial expression to match. “Whoa whoa, the Battle of the Bands here is a real battle?” He seemed to contemplate this for a moment and his expression shifted from interested to oh-my-jack-excited. That was pretty much the best combination he could come up with. How badass would it be to see musicians really duking it out as they played? “That’s jacking fantastic. I’m a drummer, but I’m not in a band. Maybe I can find one to join up with while I’m here.”
Huni Pi 11:56 pm It wouldn't have been such a terrible thing for Tess if she should discover the reaper boil's nature. In fact, she might even manage to convince herself to find a reason to spend time with him. If only out of hope that some of his... rebellious streak would rub off on her. What the conservatively raised ghoul considered daring and outrageous was probably barely mischievous to most. Besides, what her parents didn't know wouldn't hurt them. Or her. Unlike the sort of competition the school-sanctioned music festival turned out to be. "W-well, it was a surprise to us as well. There were a lot of bands, um, there was our competitors, Triple S. A-and the, uh Screaming H-Harlots," she couldn't believe she actually said that word! The faint blush that had nearly gone suddenly returned, "There were more of them, but I wasn't conscious when they announced the winner..." she finished lamely.
