A mist had seeped up from the river near her Coaltion's territory, and swallowed all of the land around it. It was a clammy and unfortunate time to be out exploring the night, and now Gienah Cygni was turned around, not sure which way was home. Usually she could glance at the ground under her feet and know, by the tiny pebbles and the configuration of grasses, exactly where she was. Studying the minute details of the world was her business, her passion. She had stuck her nose to the ground since birth and could now spot the slightest changes in the terrain, simply by recalling what had been there before.
Her talents were completely useless tonight. She'd accidentally stepped in the river twice, and the mist clung so heavily that it blocked out all the smells as well. Whimpering, she felt her way along carefully, scolding herself for her nerves. She was too old to be so nervous. What could she possibly run into in the fog, afterall?

Baridi Mokovu stopped as the sounds around him became louder, his ears were on full alert. In this fog you could see nothing, it was heavy and damp and stuck to his fur like honey. He paused as he once again heard smaller splashes, he heard them earlier but thought nothing of it.
He started to walk towards the direction of the sounds, as he got closer he could hear small whimpers. His heart beat faster as to what might be causing someone to make such sounds. As he neared the fog cleared just enough to make out the shape of a hyena. The hyena was brown and a cream white, with yellow dots and red stripes. She seemed to be looking down.
He walked up, not making his motions quite so he would not scare her when he spoke.

Turning slowly in circles, all Gienah could see on the ground were her own footprints as she made them, and barely even those. She walked backwards for a moment, hoping the ground would make more sense if taken from a different perspective. She promptly stepped into the edge of the river again, and jerked back, hissing. What an unpleasant sensation! Now her foott was wet and cold again, and trotting around in mud wasn't going to help.
Suddenly she jerked up and peered around the mist intently. She thought she'd heard something, the barest of tiny noises. She held breathlessly still for a long moment, watching the fog pool and twist. It could almost make you see things in it, like it was a living thing. She had sworn she'd seen a shape of something, but it was too white to be anything but mist. Shaking her head ruefully, she sat down on the edge of the stream to pity herself for awhile.

Mokovu tried hard not to smile, it seemed this fog was thicker then he had realized. Not only had the mist fooled but it seemed she was lost with all this mist around her. He decided to approach her he walked right into her so no fog hid him from her anymore. "Hello"He said his tone soft so he did not scare her or threaten her. He hoped he had not come at to much of an inconvenient time.
He tried to remain still and silent, careful to not set her off. He looked at her more carefully, she seemed older. Perhaps that would explain her confusion. And from the looks of it she had been confused for a while, multiple layers of footprints seemed to go in circles and all around. He almost felt bad for her that she seemed so deeply lost, perhaps he could help her find her way out. That is if she let him.

When the mist actually transformed into a solid lion, walked over to her, and said hello, Gienah promptly fell over in shock. She recovered quickly and hauled herself to her feet, shaking off dirt and trying very hard not to look embarrassed at her reaction. This kept her distracted from being worried about the close proximity of the much larger carnivore, but she still looked him over carefully. Not fog then, just very well camouflaged.
His ethereal-like appearance made her glance over his shoulder to look for wings, just in case. There weren't any. Not a god, just a lion. She breathed a little easier. "Hello," she finally answered. "You're not of the Coalition, I would remember you. They probably wouldn't mind you entering the territory, but I hope you're not here to cause any problems. Then again..." she looked around mournfully, "... actually, I'm not sure if we're even in the territory. We could be anywhere."

Mokovu felt bad as she fell over, he did not intend to scare or frighten her. She seemed to get up quickly however and compose herself. He watched as she studied him briefly before speaking."I am not here to cause any problems, and I never intended to cross on anyones territory." He said kindly as he looked around as she mentioned she was unsure of her location. he guessed she had been lost and he was right, he would offer her his help."If you wish I can offer myself to help and find your way back home, I truly mean no threat. So if you wish I could be of some use" He said wandering if she would accept his kindness. Perhaps she thought he was a threat, but he never thought of himself as appearing to be a threat. At least not when he felt threatened.

Gienah paced in place for a moment, weighing over her options as she tried to get a feel for the lion she'd encountered. She wasn't exactly unused to his kind, but he was a stranger and she felt somewhat skittish despite herself. Must be nerves from being out in this surreal fog, she thought. She was very on edge this night, with an odd sense of foreboding she couldn't quite place. Scared of the strange and unfamiliar, perhaps.
She bristled at his offer of help, and was surprised with herself. Normally she warmed up to people pretty fast. But so recently an adult, she took pride in her detailed knowledge of the coalition's territory, and his suggesting that she was lost - even if she was - set her on edge. "No thank you," she said, forcing a smile. "Though if you need help finding your way I could escort you along the border. Where are you headed?"

Mokovu watched her as she paced up and down, clearly thinking on her next words wisely. He felt bad for this female, he could sense her nerves like waves smashing into him. Finally she spoke, it seemed she felt more comfortable with the idea of her helping him, he accepted this."Well I am simply looking for anywhere to go, no where in particular" He said as he spoke with a soft voice. He was always lost and always wandering. Never quite knowing where he was heading.
He looked about him and started to realize he didn't even know where he had came from. He was usually like this, it seemed his memories left as soon as they came. He never quite understood why he was like this, he just needed to find a place to rest, maybe stay forever.

The lion's soft tone made her look up and reassess him, and she nearly laughed with relief as her nerves finally bubbled over and came to a stopping point. She realized she was taking things way out of proportion. It was this darned fog, driving up her anxiety, making her see enemies where there weren't any. "I'm sorry, I'm very out of sorts this evening," she apologized. "Here, maybe we can find the border together. Once I recognize the ground I'll know where I am."
She trotted boldly forward to show that her fear had passed... and the ground gave out from under her and she tumbled into the river. She came up sputtering and flailing a moment later, kicking her lanky legs trying to make it back to shore. She was so badly startled that she was whining like a pup in between gasps for air.

Relief flooded him when he felt her nerves fade away. He nodded to her as she spoke, she seemed very smart once she was collected. "No need to apologize the fog can do that" He said softly accepting her apology as he started to help her find the border scents or markings. He could not help but give a faint grin as he could see in her trot the fierceness she beheld. He admired her for collecting herself so fast and so well.
He was shocked when she tumbled and fell into the river. His heart froze but his body did not. He quickly jumped in after her knowing his weight would push him father down the river to her. He could see her thrashing around every once in a while. And when he lost her her whines helped him locate her again. He pushed hard, he would not let anything happen to her. Finally she came into close distant and he reached his head out and grabbed her by the back of her neck. Gently he pulled her to the side where the rivers current was not as strong. He started to feel his paws push on the ground as he treaded hard. Finally he caught his grip and pushed himself up and out of the river. He gently placed her down on the ground and started to nudge her. "Oh no, please wake up! please!"He frantically began to push his muzzle into her side. He moved close so any warmth he had could be shared with her.

For a moment there in the water Gienah actually thought she'd be lost to the river. She couldn't feel the bottom, and the short distance the current carried her made her lose sight of the shore. She almost felt like she'd drifted out to see and was surrounded by nothing but water and mist on all sides. It was absurd, she'd lived near this river all her life, she couldn't drown in it!
But as startled as she was be suddenly dunked into the cold water, Gienah was even more surprised by the lion's fervent efforts to help her. The massive white creature came crashing out of the fog to swim up beside her, grabbed her, and hauled her back to the shore. Which, to her embarrassment, was only a few feet away. He was so strong that he did all the lift out of the water for her, and she limply let herself be carried up onto dry land, wheezing.
"I'm alright, I'm just," she coughed and spluttered, "stupid," she finished lamely. After a pause to clear the water from her lungs, she grinned ruefully up at him. "Guess I shouldn't discount a new friend. I'm Gienah Cygni, by the way. Watcher of tiny things."

Mokovu felt his heart beat come back when she spoke. He was so relieved he could finally stop shaking. "No not stupid! I didn't even see it coming, not even the most brilliant lion would have been able too" He said trying to comfort her, the words however were not lies. The river was just as much of a shock to him as it was to her. He glad that horrifying experience was over, and he was glad he did not lose her to the river.
"A pelasure Geinah Cygni, I am Baridi Mokovu my name means Winter Salvation"He said with a slight smile, the fact she called him a friend made him happy. He started to think about her name, and the fact she was the watcher of tiny things. It made him interested into knowing her better...as a friend.

Shaking herself off, water splattering everywhere and joining with the damp of the mist, Gienah stood up on legs stiff from adrenaline, but aside from her nerves being rattled, she was no worse for wear for going into the river. She marked off this night mentally as a story she would never, ever tell to her siblings. They already mocked her for forever watching her feet, and warned that one day she wouldn't see where she was going and would walk right into an alligator's mouth. No need to let them know they might be right.
"Pleased also to meet you, Baridi Mokovu," she said, with a bob of her head as greeting. "As a hyena who owes you her life, please let me offer you the Coalition's hospitality. We're a mixed group, we even have some lions, and I think we have a spare den available if you wanted to rest."

Mokovu felt relief that she was alright, he would have hated to have lost her to the river. He nodded to her kind words and offer of rest. He needed it now after the incident. It seemed both of them would need a good rest tonight. "Thank you your offer seems grateful and I would be happy to accept it" He said as he smiled at her kindness. He was interested in seeing there Coalition, as she called it. A mix of lions and other breeds seemed different and new to him but not in a bad way. He would be happy to see how the lived amongst each other and their ways.
"Well we should be off before our damp pelts freeze when night falls upon us"He said with a nod and walked over to her to make sure she still wasn't shaken from the fall into the river. He wanted to make sure she got home soon before her family and friends worried. Last thing he wanted to happen is more people sent into this fog and falling into the river.
