Reaching out her only good hand, Claire opened the door and stepped into the high-ceilinged, spacious training room. There were plenty of training machines spread out around the walls, with mats and space in the middle probably for the purposes of stretches or perhaps those heavy weighted exercise balls some people liked to use. Slung over her right shoulder was an odd-looking, rather large backpack with several leather straps - she'd had it for quite some time, though hadn't used it recently.

Claire closed the door behind her before pulling two pokeballs off her belt. It took her a bit of minor juggling with her fingers to expand and release the contents of both balls with one hand, but once successful she clipped both back to her belt. Both Odette and Zeus stretched, immediately knowing their purpose there judging from the equipment around the room. She walked over to a treadmill that sat next to a bike machine and turned it to a decent walking pace, before pointing to it. "Zeus, we'll start slowly and work up from there."

He snorted in distaste at the horrible, torturous death machine he had to go on, but at least it looked slow for now so he shouldn't die too quickly. His tail twitched as he jumped over and climbed onto it, quickly adjusting to the slow speed. Claire was very glad his behavior had improved recently, so much so that she no longer needed to tie him to the machine to make him stay on it.

She turned to Odette and pulled the backpack off her shoulder. It took the golden bird a moment to recognize the giant thing, but once she did she chirped while turning her back towards her owner and leaning forward, fully outstretching her wings. Claire moved closer to place the large, thick bag onto Odette's back, carefully but tightly securing it with straps that stretched around her shoulders to criss-cross over her chest and wrap back up around her sides. She opened the thin bottom section to adjust the large blanket she'd stuffed in there to protect the vain bird's back, then zipped it closed before opening the large one on top. She then walked over to a group of benches - for bench presses or something, an exercise Claire usually never practiced. Odette chirped again and folded her wings once more before quickly moving to her owner.

Nobody would miss a few weights, she was sure, and Claire managed to find and lift a 20lb circular weight with one hand before putting it in the bag. She picked out five more and placed them as well, one at a time of course, into the bag on Odette's back, before zipping it closed and pointing to some vague spot above them. The bird obliged by spreading her wings and taking off into the air. That done, Claire walked over to the treadmill Zeus was on and turned the speed up to a light jog, ignoring the small growl the Pikachu gave her with a roll of her eyes, and she then swung her leg over the bike machine next to Zeus' treadmill. At least this sort of machine she could use one-handed.

To the best of Lucas's knowledge, he had turned in for the evening, retiring early to catch up on sleep he had lost to work, guitar, and attempting to acclimate Snow. Where one mind descended into the embrace of slumber, though, another awakened. Before long, he was in the gym. Sweatpants and a dark t-shirt replaced his usual sweater and jeans, and his glasses and shoes were left on a shelf near the entrance. He had taken up a place near a series of dummies and punching bags with the intent to brush up on his hand-to-hand combat.

The muffled din of his fists against the heavy bag was swallowed by the high ceilings and the whirring of the assorted exercise equipment. He eventually noticed out of the corner of his eye as someone approached the bench press and began removing weights, lifting an eyebrow in vague curiosity. Weight training for the bird, it seemed. Interesting. Even more interesting was that he recognized that someone. With a mental shrug he abandoned the bags and moved towards the cycling machines. No harm in a balanced workout, right? He chose a machine a few down from the one Claire was using, hesitant to call out to her.

Claire was busy keeping one eye on Zeus and her other on Odette - figuratively speaking of course - to make sure both were doing fine. Zeus was getting used to the treadmill quickly, but Odette hadn't carried Claire for a few weeks now and the young woman didn't want her precious bird to get out of shape.

She continued cycling on the machine, not noticing the man enter the room quite yet. After a couple of minutes she leaned over to turn the speed up on Zeus' treadmill a bit. The exasperated Pikachu couldn't help but wonder just what he did to deserve such a horrible punishment, but deep down he knew that it was just another form of training.

Claire stopped and got off the bike machine and reached her fingers up to her mouth. A short whistle pierced the air before her hand lowered and walked towards the benches again, but stopped when she noticed Lucas. "Oh, hello Lucas," she said as the golden bird landed near her and moved to stand behind her trainer. She didn't mind the weights while flying, but they were awkward to move with on the ground. "I didn't know you'd be down here, too." Unfortunately she couldn't think of much to say on such short notice when her mind was obviously on other things - more than likely what to do next for training.

Lucas responded with a curt nod, "Evening, Claire." He was vaguely relieved that she had noticed him and saved him the awkward task of making himself known, though it did leave him to wonder how she had managed it so nonchalantly. It was rare that he had the opportunity to speak with others, and he was finding all this 'polite socialization' business terribly troubling. "I'm here a few nights a week. Have to keep up my form in case a mission comes up." He watched the almost fumbling Pidgeot with something between curiosity and amusement. It was an interesting way to go about training pokemon, for sure, and if he had an affinity for raising the things he would have been tempted to strap a weight to Snow and see how that worked out.

"I'm usually here earlier than this," she said, looking for another weight off the rack. She wasn't sure whether to go another full 20lbs - considering the weight Odette was carrying currently was roughly what Claire's weight was - or if she should choose something lighter. With an audible 'hmm' she pulled another 20lb weight off the rack and put it into Odette's backpack with a loud clunk. The bird looked mildly concerned with the additional weight, but refrained from making any audible complaints.

"But, after dinner I thought of doing this for Odette. I can't ride her until my arm is better, so this will help make sure she stays in shape and train her to carry more weight as well, just in case she needs to carry two people at some point." Such 'just in case' conditions were what Claire trained and planned for, and the reason she was always thinking of ways for effective and immediate escapes from dangerous situations. "It's hard for me to train myself the way I usually do, I normally swim or do exercises that require two hands." In other words, it had thrown a mankey wrench into her usual routines and she had yet to become fully accustomed to the undesirable change.

"Hmm." He studied his own arm, wondering how he would train if he were suddenly unable to use it. He had suffered various gunshot wounds, cuts, and mild sprains, but thinking about it he realized that he had never actually broken a limb before. "...One-handed push-ups," he remarked absently, more to himself than to Claire.

While Lucas was thinking, Claire pointed up in the air again and her bird was off once more, flying in an oval around the training room. Her owner watched her for a few moments, and decided that amount of weight would be sufficient. She could gradually increase it day by day to avoid going too quickly, she didn't want to injure the Pidgeot.

"Oh?" She said, turning back to the man as he spoke. Her brows furrowed as she thought about the exercise, not noticing - or maybe ignoring - that he'd said it more to himself than to her. It was the first time she'd broken a limb too, so it was a completely new experience she had yet to fully get used to. "Hmm..." Push-ups were a typical part of her routine when she had both hands, but she'd never tried it before.

"That would require a different hand placement, obviously, and..." The thought continued in her head as she tapped a finger lightly against her chin, studying the ground as if it would tell her exactly what to do. Yes, she could do that. She'd just need to work her left arm back up to where it was before she'd broken it, as obviously she would lose muscle in it from so many weeks of not using it.

With a determined air, she knelt down on the ground and leaned forward, placing her hand in a central position on the floor. She tested it several times with her knees still against the ground, moving her hand once or twice before gaining enough confidence to lift her knees from the ground. Claire stayed like that for a moment or two before putting one knee back, moving her hand once more, then lifted her knee. Looking quite determined, the young woman attempted one slow push-up, finding that her arm shook slightly with the effort of just one, but she wasn't about to admit she couldn't do it. No, this was easy! ...sort of. Not really. She could do it, of course, it would just take a great deal of practice. She frowned at the floor slightly as she did another slow push-up.

Lucas watched as she got into position, studying her form and poise as she attempted the push-up. "Careful," he said, noting the slight quiver of her arm. "I've seen people injure themselves terribly doing this sort of exercise." Not that he was trying to frighten her away from trying. He simply didn't want to be held responsible if she did hurt herself. He was starting to feel a bit like a training coach standing there watching her do push-ups, though - and he had never liked leading trainee exercises in Galactic - so he mimicked Claire's stance, folding his arm across the small of his back. He managed a few of the push-ups before a mist of sweat began to accumulate on his brow. They really were much more difficult than their standard counterparts.

She noticed when he got down and started doing them too, but she only bothered doing one or two more after that, her arm getting extremely tired very quickly. After a few moments she put her knees on the floor before flipping over to sit cross-legged on the ground with a sigh. "Mm, I see what you mean, those are hard." But nothing she couldn't do, of course. "But I have no intentions of injuring my only good arm for the next several weeks, so I think I'll stick to other exercises for the time being." And why she remained sitting on the ground for now - her arm was still a bit too sore to push her back up to her feet.

Violet eyes moved to the bird still circling just below the ceiling, who looked fine, so Claire shifted her gaze to Zeus, who was panting on the treadmill. "Zeus, off," she said, and the Pikachu happily obliged by jumping flopping off the machine and landing on his back next to it, still panting. The young woman didn't seem to be too concerned, however, so she turned back to Lucas. She couldn't quite tell which it was, but judging from his behavior she was pretty sure it was the one who had explained so much to her, when Merry wouldn't go near him. She would need to come up with names to differentiate between the two... "Do you get to have real conversations with people very often, Lucas?" Probably not, since he'd told her before he only was active (usually) during (potentially) dangerous things.

He would switch to his other arm and match the number he had done with the first before bringing both arms to the floor, winding down with a few normal push-ups, and moving to a sitting position. He swiped the back of his hand across his brow and rotated his wrist slightly. "A good call," he commented offhandedly at her decision to stop, watching the round little Pikachu practically pass out beside the machine. "You should have him do cool-down exercises. It's bad for the body to come to rest suddenly." Perhaps Lucas took exercise a little too seriously...

"What qualifies as a 'real' conversation?" It struck him as an odd thing to ask, but then a number of things about casual chatting struck him as odd.

"Hmm, good point," she commented thoughtfully before testing her arm on the ground. No, she wouldn't chance it quite yet. She'd get up in a minute or two. "Zeus, jump up and turn it down."

Jump?! Was she serious? With an exasperated sigh, the Pikachu rolled over to right himself before he climbed onto the seat of the bike machine, and from there jumped up onto the control panel of the torturous death machine. He frowned at all of the buttons and pushed a few to see what they did, and once his experiments proved a success to find the 'down' button, he pushed it down to a slow jogging pace. That should be good, right? Hopefully.

That done, he jumped down beside the machine before hopping up onto the track to continue his exercise.

"A 'real' conversation? Well, I suppose you could consider this one," she said with a shrug. "But I just meant something that wasn't a few words during a mission, or being briefed or debriefed on a mission." The latter were more like necessities where the superiors talked at their underlings, not to them, which would make it an extremely one-sided conversation.

Some part of him was impressed that the Pikachu was so obedient about something it so obviously did not want to do. He recalled overhearing that the mouse would do anything for treats and idly wondered what kinds of rewards Claire used as such perfect motivation.

"In that case, no. I handle conversation that could be disconcerting or troubling. In the past this has been by and large restricted to topics pertaining to missions. I also supervised training exercises fairly frequently." Not that he ever did a whole lot of talking during any of that. In fact, it seemed that he had spoken with his own will more often in the past few days than he had in the previous several years.

It wasn't exactly what Zeus would get as a reward, it was more like what he wouldn't get if he didn't do the actions Claire asked of him. What he wouldn't get were his favorite treats ever - double chocolate cookies or cake, and not having those ever again would be a horrible, terrible punishment.

Claire was watching the golden bird flying overhead while Lucas spoke, trying to spot any sort of tiredness in the Pidgeot's form, but she could see nothing, which was good. It meant Odette was still in good shape and still had excellent stamina. The bird would get a break in a few minutes.

"So you never really get a chance to actually talk with people?" She asked when her violet eyes shifted back to the man near her. "I'm sorry. That must get terribly lonely." She couldn't imagine only talking to people before or during missions, as that would get very boring very fast, and incredibly lonely.

She moved to sit on her hip and slid a leg under her, then pushed herself up with minor use of her arm. It was probably fine by now, but she still didn't want to force it if her muscles were too tired. The last thing she needed was to injure this arm, too. "Was it like that in Galactic too?"
PostPosted: Tue Jan 11, 2011 9:33 pm

Lucas's gaze followed Claire's briefly as the bird continued to circle. He returned his eyes to her when she spoke, and his brow furrowed with confusion. "What? Lonely?" He pronounced the word as though it were foreign. "I'm... not sure I understand...?"

He took her rising as a cue to do so himself. Her second question was much easier to wrap his head around, and he was able to answer with little effort, "Yes. It's been like this since I was thirteen."

It was her turn for her brows to furrow as he spoke, as if the concept that someone didn't know what the term 'lonely' meant was completely foreign. Probably because it was. "You don't know what it means..?" But he seemed so.. smart. How could he just not know what it meant? "It's a negative feeling people get when they don't have anyone to talk to, or when they feel like they don't have any friends." She really wasn't sure how she was supposed to explain it. "Umm.. It could also feel like that when you don't get out much and don't have a chance to do anything for a while, when you're cooped up somewhere, but that's more of a forlorn or hopeless feeling.." It was actually sort of difficult - like trying to explain why two plus two equals four.

Apparently it was a good time to stretch, as she reached her arm up above her head and curled it behind her head, arching her back at the same time. "Thirteen?" Her arm lowered and she stood on her tiptoes to try and stretch her legs out, pondering on the specific age. Was that when this whole thing started? "What happened when you were thirteen?"
