I feel like a lot of people need to understand the truth behind suicide contemplation, so I'm here to give a bit of insight on it.
Still here? Haven't gone to close this thread or tell me to stfu? Good! Let's begin.
Now, the first result I got from a google search on "suicide" got me this page. I don't expect you to read the whole thing, so I'll copy-paste the important part. Quote: Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain. That's all it's about. You are not a bad person, or crazy, or weak, or flawed, because you feel suicidal. It doesn't even mean that you really want to die - it only means that you have more pain than you can cope with right now. If I start piling weights on your shoulders, you will eventually collapse if I add enough weights... no matter how much you want to remain standing. Willpower has nothing to do with it. Of course you would cheer yourself up, if you could.
The important thing to take from that is that suicidal people aren't choosing to think the thoughts that they have. They won't stop thinking about it if you tell them not to think about it. It's an automatic thought that goes into their head, and it won't go away until either their pain goes away at least somewhat, or they get more coping resources.
So. How can you help someone who is talking about suicide? To be honest, I'm not sure. This page has a list of things you can do to help someone who is suicidal, but I think a lot of those don't help when you're on the Internet. But I think it's better to keep in mind the things you shouldn't do. Here's a few things I can think of off the top of my head:
-Tell the person to shut up -Explain how your life situation is bad but you put up with it anyway because life is just too darn special -Tell the person to commit suicide -Tell the person to just chill out -Tell the person that the act of suicide is selfish (!)
...
Did I just make this thread personal? Possibly! But my intention is not to cause drama, but to help you guys realize why I've been so defensive lately.
So, I hope this educational thingie has helped all of you understand where suicidal people are coming from. Have a nice day.
To mods: If you feel it necessary to bin this thread, then feel free. I'm sorry if this is inappropriate.

To be honest, if there are things going on or specific stuff you should just say it like even if it is bad or slightly uncomfortable, its good to confide and trust in people at times. Thats the best way to get people to understand you is to let them in and they'll let you in heh =/

Khlowi Jedi Sasquatch Don't worry, I'm feeling fine now. Just wanted to clear some stuff up.
Good. I had a friend that committed suicide though.. I came very close to attempting it... And I hated myself for thinking about it until I read that article that I copy-pasted from.

Jedi Sasquatch But I think it's better to keep in mind the things you shouldn't do.
-Explain how your life situation is bad but you put up with it anyway because life is just too darn special -Tell the person that the act of suicide is selfish (!) THANK you. For this whole thread, but especially these bits.

Oh, here's another important thing to keep in mind that I'm copying and pasting from that website. Quote: Myth: The people who talk about it don't do it. Studies have found that more than 75% of all completed suicides did things in the few weeks or months prior to their deaths to indicate to others that they were in deep despair. Anyone expressing suicidal feelings needs immediate attention.
I feel I should note that this isn't directed to anyone here in particular. This is just a very common myth that people have said to me before. It's just not true, and that's a fact.
