To say Lissa was nervous was an understatement. She had been told about this school but Timothy who'd overheard two soquilli talking about it before he was going to prank them. She'd come to the location the day before and signed up for the classes she thought she needed right now - though she was thinking of taking up a few more down the track, since new classes were being added regularly.
Now it was time for her first class - health and later she'd have self defense. She waited in the clearing, her hooves planted in the ground to stop her from running away. She was nervous and worried about Timothy and Valentino; but they'd done fine without her before and she doubted anyone would bother picking on such a small herd. 'Focus, Lissa.' She calmed herself and brought her mind to the task at hand. She needed to learn in order to lead and she was here to learn.

Atiya nearly danced to the place she'd been told to meet her instructor and any classmates. She'd been waiting for a chance like this for a long time, and was so happy and excited and apprehensive all at once that she felt she might burst. First day of school was like a new present for her. "Good morning!" she called out cheerfully to the soquili she assumed was probably a classmate. Even if she was the teacher, a friendly greeting couldn't hurt. "Am I in the right place?" I am forever fouling up directions.... She willed herself to calm down.

Lissa turned around at the sound of hooves falling behind her in time to meet the cheery face of a mare. Lissa almost laughed at the girl, the excitement in the air becoming contagious. She smiled and nodded.
"Health and well being and self defense? If so, you're in the right place."
Glancing the mare over, Lissa took in her appearance. She was quite pretty, but didn't seem to know it - or if she did, she didn't let it go to her head. She seemed cheerful and kind enough and Lissa came to the conclusion it would be nice sharing a class with her.
"I'm Vasilissa. Lissa for short. It's a pleasure to meet you."

"I'm Atiya." She smiled. "I like your name. And your colors, wow." She shook off to settle down. "Nice to meet you, too. Ooh, I can hardly wait! What do you suppose the teacher's like?"
She felt she might really enjoy her new classmate, as well. Lissa seemed pleasant and friendly. She just hoped she would remember the name when she needed it. Vasilissa....must remember.... "I'm sorry, I might forget your name," she apologized in advance. "I'm terrible with such things."
She thought of her little friend, Demo. Ah, he'd have helped her remember...but he had his own family, his own life. Probably a good thing - that little sucker was too smart for his own good. Might've tempted me to cheat, she laughed silently to herself.

Lissa smiled at the compliment, blushing a little. She wasn't used to such things. Naivety gets the best of her sometimes.
"I'm not too sure. I only hope he's kind."
Laughing Lissa shook her head. "It's a hard name to remember, I won't hold it against you if you forget. We'll just have to stay around each other so you don't forget."
At the time, a humming bird fluttered around Lissa's head, trilling in her ear. "Oh, how rude of me. This is my familiar, Rosa."
Rosa danced around Atiya's head before flittering off again. "She's travelling between here and my herd, letting me know of any major happenings."
Stretching out, Lissa sat herself on the ground in front of Atiya and smiled. "What made you decide to come to classes, if you don't mind my asking."

Atiya watched Rosa with some interest. "I invited a squirrel to be mine, but he's got his own life, so we're just good friends. Have been for a while. Probably best he's not here, actually...I was just thinking he might 'help' a little too much." She laughed. "He'd probably tell me the answers ahead of time."
The question of why made her think for a second. She was almost embarassed at her aspirations, but she doubted there was anything wrong with them, so she went ahead and said it. "Me? I love to help others, so I want to learn how best to do that." She joined her new companion on the ground, stretching with a happy sigh. "I kind of wish I was a Uni like you. Then I could be better at it. The way I see it, though, is that I can help in my own little way."

Lissa laughed at the comment about Atiya's familiar. "It'd be a shame to see you kicked out for his good intentions."
Lissa smiled kindly at Atiya. "You'll do fine, I'm sure of it." She laughed lightly, almost bitterly. "I'm a uni and I don't really know what to do. Only basics." Her eyes saddened a little. "Pretty hopeless, especially for a leader."

"Aw, you'll be fine! Everyone has to learn...and most of us start from the bottom." Atiya ginned. She was sure of what she was saying. "A lot of that's experience, too, I suspect. At least, the leader part is."
Chatting had loosened her up slightly, and made her less overexcited. She welcomed the change. "You have inborn abilities that I'll never have. You just have to learn to tap them. And you will, I'm sure, no worries about that." And I'll be stuck like this, but hey, I'll do my best.
"So you're a leader, huh? Or just becoming one?"

Lissa patted Atiya's leg, smiling. "Half the battle is believing in yourself. Trust me, I could write a book on that subject."
Lissa nodded. "I'm a leader now. It was kind of.. thrust upon me. They had no one else, I came along and here I am." She shrugged lightly. "I'm learning day by day, bit by bit."
Tilting her head, she raised a brow at the mare before her. "Do you have a herd?"

"No, I don't." Atiya wasn't sure whether that was a bad thing, or not. She certainly had mixed feelings about it. "Do you think I should? I've never really felt I needed one." She also didn't particularly like being responsible for someone for an extended time, but she declined to say so. Maybe that would change with time. "And eh...what exactly is a book? I don't think I've ever seen one."
