When Grandfather Wind blew his breath across the first plain from the east, there came the tall grasses. It was this breath that called to the earth and swept the hills into existance. There came the people, following the trail of the wind, and the great moving herds of buffalo that shifted with the seasons of the grass.

From the west wind there came the waters, and the clouds, pregnant with rain. It was from the west that my kine were forged, answering to the song of the gray waters. In the space between Mother Earth and Father Sky, there dwelt the spirit birds. We followed the parade of existance: The people, who followed the herds; the herds who followed the grass; the grass that followed the wind.

We were masters of this hoop - tyrants of the delicate equilibruim of beast and plant, tide of life and death. Bearers of the storm. Dancers of lightning. Life was freely judged, and freely taken. Not good. Not evil. My kine were revered and appreciated - the unbiased hand of nature, generous and cruel.

I can not say that I remember my birth, or the eons passed of my existance. I can only remember when first came the white man, to make a mockery of the sacred balance.

At first the white man was ignored, or observed as a curiosity. The white men came, the white man died - still, more came. Soon, the stinking trail of their progress cut into the earth and festered like a rotting wound. They brought with them disease, fear, and swept a cloud of blood across the Great Plains.

The mighty herds grew thin and weak. The people were slaughtered and kenneled into lands dead and dry as bone, a journey which was yet the death of many, and many things.

The people cried to the Wise Ones to make the lands fertile - to bring the waters, and the grasses. The shaman danced and prayed. It was I who answered their call.

Minninnewah, Whirlwind, that was the name of the one that called to me. He was the first of the people that I had ever taken time to truly observe. Until Minninnewah I was unaware of the subtle nuances of their faith, or the little details of their life. The great boredom of my timeless existance ceased to be as I watched the shaman dance and sing, and though I have no doubt that Minninnewah could sense my presance I was not visible to his eyes.

It was a foolish mistake that I did not leave when Minninnewah began the ritual to bond our souls. It was an old magic, and would ensure that some of my power would become his own. Make no mistake, I wanted this to happen. The shaman would be able to help his people, and they suffered so. A staff was to be his reliquary, and in that staff would rest a piece of my soul.

The magic took many days, and was more painful than anything I had experienced in the ages of my existance. To have a piece of one's soul torn from their body is a maddening agony, but a weight that I gladly bore. So distracted was I by the turmoil of my own suffering, that I could not have warned Minninnewah that the white man approached, had I seen them or been able to speak in the voice of man.

The white men fell upon the people, and the ground stained red. Not a single man, woman or child was spared. Minninnewah, quiet in his skin shelter was among the last to fall. As the chaos broke around him, the shaman thought only of his task, ears deaf to the screams outside. It was a soldier dressed in the blues of a coming storm that killed Minninnewah, with a stick that smoked and cracked like thunder. As the shaman's body hit the ground, an exploding agony turned my vision red. In the next second, all was black. My awareness ceased to be.

It was the storm that gave us life. It is the wind that comes out of our mouths now that gives us life. When this ceases to blow we die. In the skin at the tips of your fingers you can see the trail of the wind, and the path of the lightning. It shows you where the storm blew when your ancestors were created. It shows you home.

The soldier claimed Minninnewah's staff as a war prize, and his children used it to play "Savage". Over time, the relic was lost or forgotten, perhaps hidden in some attic, dusty and unseen. The people died or were driven back. The spirit birds slowly disappeared, becoming legend and myth. Only the staff remained.
