This was a bad idea. A very, very bad idea.
"RHYS YOU GET BACK HERE THIS INST - TAKASHIRO, NO, DON'T BITE THA - OW! FELIX! STOP FLAPPING SO MUC - RHYS I SAID GET BACK HERE!"
Ren was wondering what on earth had gone through his brain that morning, and what creature from outer space had possessed him and made him decide - on a whim - to take his three minipets out for a walk.
All three. On a walk.
He resisted the urge to beat his head against the nearest tree. Stumbling along the school grounds, dragging his pets (or rather, being dragged by his pets) Ren let out a string of curses, none of which were appropriate, and all of which were very loud. And irritated. And frustrated.
"JACKDAMMIT RHYS YOU DAMNED RABBIT."
He should have bought longer leashes. Either that, or less annoying pets.

This had been a very wonderful idea!
It was a suitably lovely day and since Binx had experienced many walkies, Belladonna felt it was only proper that her dearest Galahad the zombie-squirrel also participate in such a time honored expression of owner and pet love. The fact that he only communicated in a number of very complicated hisses did not deter the witch who had somehow coaxed a collar with matching leash around his neck in the event he felt the need to run. Galahad was suitably under impressed that it was pink.
But Binx was rather alright with this because he didn't have to wear a collar. So the little trio set out upon the school grounds, Belladonna skipping, Galahad hanging onto her shoulders, his little eyes darting from each new thing to the next, and Binx happily (and collarlessly) trotting alongside them, his tail stuck up in the slightest of mocking manners. Sure, Belladonna had a lot of pets ("Familiars make a good witch!" She always told the little cat), but so long as he was the favorite it was all well.
"My, what a lot of shouting!" Belladonna mused to the pets as she rounded a little corner of trees to see a bespeckled boy trying to walk his three pets. Well, actually... They were the ones doing the walking and he was the helpless victim of a three-pet take over. That simply couldn't do! Feeling extra helpful, Belladonna dashed over (stifled a sigh of adoration over the pets) and stood before the three (four counting owner!), but with enough distance that she could plant her feet, level her gaze to the pets and issue one strict command: "Heel!!"
Hopefully it worked for the other three, because both Binx and Galahad were now sitting ramrod straight either on the ground, or on a shoulder, their eyes a bit wide as they silently marveled at how one word could be so quickly heeded.

It was bad enough that Ren had a homicidal lepus who refused to stand still for even a second. It was even worse that he also had a loudly squawking quetz attempting to fly left and a stubborn, quick little incendia attempting to go right.
"For JACK"S sake - "
"Heel!"
For a moment Ren could not quite figure out where the new, unfamiliar voice had come from. This was mostly because one of Felix's wings was whacking him obnoxiously in the face as the quetz tried to fly off of his leash. Ren reached a hand up, shoving the bird to the side. He fluttered down, looking nonplussed at the command, awkwardly shuffling around. Takashiro and Rhys had stopped mid-movement, each one looking at the newcomer with wide-eyed, surprised expressions.
Ren let out his breath in a long, exasperated sigh. "Good grief," he said. "I swear, you three will be the death of me."
He turned to glance at the girl. From her black-tipped hat to her black tipped boots, she gave the very obvious impression that she was, in fact, a witch. Ren had never met a witch before - actually, he had not met very many girls at this school yet, period, so he had no idea who she was.
"Hello," he said, peering first at his pets, then back at the witch curiously. "How'd you do that? Oh, and, er, thank you," he added, somewhat awkwardly as he gestured to his now immobile pets. "For doing it, I mean."

"Oooohhh! It worked!" Belladonna cooed happily, clapping her hands quickly in glee before scooping Binx up and toddling over to the boy. "Oh it was nothing really. Just takes a firm voice. And demeanor. And sometimes a bit of luck. I suppose surprise helps too." For a moment she paused before him, her mouth screwing up into a frown as she considered what it had really been that had stopped the pets, but she decided it really didn't matter so long as they stopped, now did it?
"Hi, by the way! I'm Belladonna Divine. Its lovely to meet you. You have such lovely pets... And wings too!" Any person she met with wings was instantly a favorite since they could fly and she so loved the action of such. Though she bet he could land easier than she could. "What are their names? This is Binx!" She held up the cat who lifted a paw in a small wave, though his eyes were half-lidded with disinterest. "And Galahad is on my shoulder." The zombie-squirrel hissed his greeting, which sounded much angrier than was meant.
My, this boil sure was tall... Belladonna took a step back so she wasn't right under his nose, but she was beginning to feel exceptionally small... Not that she minded of course. "And glad I could help..." She added finally, capping off her little tirade of words with thanks for his thanks.

Ren was more than a little grateful that the witch had managed to get his absolutely, totally, irritating slightly frustrating pets under control. He let an easy grin grace his face, nodding his head towards her in what possibly, might have counted as a bow, only without much movement whatsoever.
"Pleased to meet you, Belladonna," he answered - shoving Felix back down again. "I'm Renaissance, but most just call me Ren since it's too long. I'm not quite certain where my mother got the names, but for some reason she decided to name me and my sister Renaissance and Medieval." He gave a noncommittal shrug. "Weird names, I know, but they work, I guess."
Ren glanced at the cat - Binx? - and tilted his head, reaching out to pat it. "Cute little thing," he said, before looking at the squirrel. "Er...that's, uh...cute too...sort of."
The girl - Belladonna - was tiny, but her voice was a lot stronger and more confident than he had thought would come out of such a small person. Not that he minded her being short.
"Ah," he said, gesturing to the unnaturally quiet quetz. "This thing here is Felix. The black one is Takashiro, and the white one is the Troublemaker - I mean, Rhys."
He glanced around the witch, trying to see where she'd come from. "I'm sorry to have made you stop and help me," he said. "Where you going somewhere?"

Having caught the head nod as the slightest shade of a bow, Belladonna smiled brightly and stepped into a curtsy that was comprised slightly by holding Binx, but preformed well enough that Galahad let out a small hiss-squeak of distress and held harder onto his shoulder perch. This boil walked his pets, bowed and smiled easily, so Belladonna was instantly sure in her assessment of him: Lovely!
"Renaissance and Medieval? Why that's rather cute I think! My mom was really lame with my sisters and my names. I'm Belladonna and my older sisters are Hemlock and Delphinium. All poisonous flowers!" But honestly, Belladonna felt she got away with the best name. Sibling rivalry and all that. "Thaaaaanks." Belladonna said, rolling on her heels while her pets were praised.
"Cute?!" Binx asked, aghast. "Its the bow, isn't it? Its always this damned bow..." He muttered, sinking into Belladonna's arms and trying to cover up the pink bow around his neck with black paws, but really not feeling all that put out about being called 'cute' since he did acquire a pet from it. And Galahad had only gotten a half compliment, which suited Binx better since he did have to be the most loved pet. Pet rivalry and all that.
"Oh it was no problem! I was just talking these two out for some air, try to get a little exercise. Binx stays guard over my room and Galahad usually just stays at the top of my bookshelf." For a moment she paused, looking this boil over. Hhhmm. He seemed very kind and she liked his wings and his hair and definitely his freckles. "How about you?" Maybe she could wheedle a new friendship out of this...

Belladonna was a very pleasant sort of ghoul; Ren found that he liked her quite a bit. Her smile was genuine, not forced like several of the others he had met before, and her cheerful disposition made him feel more comfortable, more relaxed, less like he had to try and impress her. Not that he would have anyway (that would have taken way too much energy, anyway), but it was a nice thought altogether.
"Why thank you," he said with a smile. "I'm glad you think so. I've never had much thought to why my name is what it is, but it's good to see others don't find it quite as strange as I do.
"And those are...pretty names," Ren added, the compliment somewhat awkward, since he had no idea what flowers those names were from (he hadn't even heard of them). "I think it fits you pretty well. You don't look like a Jill or Patricia, at least," he added, attempting to be helpful.
The cat - Binx - was glaring at him - well, as well as a cat could glare. The black-furred creature was staring at him from Belladonna's arms, his paws pushing down the bright pink, satin bow tied daintily around his neck. "Er," said Ren hastily. "Handsome. I meant you look handsome."
Turning back to the witch, Ren said "Ah, I'm glad. I would have felt kinda guilty if I had kept you from wherever you were going." He paused. "Well. Not too guilty, but you know what I mean." Ren gave a casual shrug, rolling his shoulders nonchalantly. "Nahhh, I wasn't going anywhere in particular. But if you're up for it, maybe we could walk our pets together? It's always more fun to have someone to talk to while you're trying to resist strangling your - ...I mean, while you're walking your pets."

Having all these compliments doled out onto the witch was making her feel extremely friendly toward the boil. Not that she didn't feel extremely friendly toward most people, but it was still the fact of the matter. Even Binx was starting to level out his dislike of being called 'cute' (only his witch could call him that!) and Galahad was... erm, not hissing. Surely those were good signs so Belladonna bypassed the idea of him being almost guilty and instead gave Binx a kiss to the head, set him down and darted over so that she could link her arm with Ren's.
"I think walking our pets together would be delightful!" She chirruped, her opposite hand lifting to give Galahad one small pet.
"Soooo~" She drawled out the word as they took a step forward, she resiting the urge to skip while linked by the arm and tilting her head occasionally to look up at him as well as avoid hitting him with her brim. "Where are you from? How's the family? What are they like? Met anyone interesting?" Curiosity was easily channeled in the form of personal questions that the witch hoped Ren wouldn't mind answering. He seemed so nice! And extremely laid back, which was a nice counter to Belladonna's constant exuberance.

With a smile, Ren lifted his elbow allowing Belladona to slide dainty fingers into the crook of his arm. He let her pull them forward to start walking, falling easily into step with the redheaded witch.
"Ah," he said, not at all bothered by the bombard of questions she leveled at him almost immediately. If anything, he liked that she was so exuberant. "I'm from....well, I'm not really sure, to be honest. My parents are both gryphons. AS for their well being..." Ren paused, not entirely certain how to answer the question without actually showing the bitter anger he felt towards those two people.
"They're...fine," he finally answered, then quickly moved onto the next question, a smile crossing his face. "Ah, as for meeting anyone interesting, well I did meet this one little witch who was quite fascinating..." Ren tossed a playful wink in Belladonna's direction. On his head, Felix flapped his wings, nearly smacking him in the face again, but Ren raised a hand, brushing his fingers down the soft, downy wing feathers and the quetz slowly calmed down.
"I've met a few, here and there," he continued, tugging on the leashes. "Found some nice new friends to keep myself entertained, at the very least."
They turned a corner, heading into the shadier part of campus. Ren turned his head to look down at Belladonna, tilting his gaze towards her.
"And you, Miss Witch?" he said lightly. "What of your time at school? Met anyone interesting? Done anything exciting? Get along with your sisters well?"

Since it took no time at all for them to fall into an easy walk, it gave Belladonna the time to realize she had yet to take a walk around the grounds with anyone yet. It was now very important she cherish such special time, even if it was with a somewhat-stranger. As if that had ever stopped her before!
"Oh, sorry. I meant are you from around here? Not too far away?" As she listened to his next question she couldn't help but purse her lips at the distinct hesitation in his answer regarding his parents. Being a near expert in that field of tip-toeing the line of how she felt about her own Mother and Father, Belladonna listened quietly to the rest of his answers, pausing to whip her face up to see what other witch he had met only to realize it was herself. "Oh!" She couldn't staunch the giggle that escaped, covering her mouth as a small blush stained her cheeks and using her free hand to softly slap him on the chest.
"I have met a number of very interesting individuals. Let me see... I have met a kelpie..." She paused, her face turning very serious for a moment. "If he tells you I like having my clothes ripped... I do, but only for fashion." The serious expression quickly melted back into a small smile as she recounted all she had met. "And a chupacabra and a number of ghosts. A sloth demon, a girl without a head... I fought a ninja too, but he was not very nice." Not very nice at all!
And as for that whole bit about her sisters Belladonna only rolled her eyes in an exaggerated manner that hopefully expressed her particular feelings. "My sisters and I are two very different types of people. I am the lovely kind and my sisters are not." A little kitty chuckle was heard from in front of them as Binx trotted ahead of them, his extra-long tail stuck up as though he were directing the two on where to go. "They do not think being cheerful a trait of a Halloweentowner. And I do not think being royal bitches are traits of a lady." This whole speech was said with the witch's nose held a little higher and spoken in the same way one might speak of a human.
"How about your sister? Do you get along with her?" But now the chirruping voice was back, so it was evident it wasn't a subject that bothered the witch altogether too much. Things had been much better now that she was away from the house, but it did leave the witch with the nagging feeling that she and Ren could talk quite a deal about their own family problems. Hhhmmmm. Next round of questions, definitely!

"Ah," said Ren with a little laugh, reaching up with his leash hand to brush aside some of the hair that kept falling into his face. It jerked Takashiro and Rhys towards him abruptly, both of them turning around to glare at him. "I'm just from around here; nothing too exciting on that particular front, I'm afraid."
Belladonna's laugh was pleasant; a cheerful trilling noise that made him smile as she playfully prodded him. And the dash of pink that touched her cheeks was endearing; Ren let out a low chuckle. "I can't help that you're interesting, milady," he said with an exaggerated sigh of mock despair. "After all, it's not every day that one meets a redheaded witch with a gift for taming minipets, is it?"
Ren tossed her a teasing wink before his expression flickered again. "I've met a kelpie too," he said, with a snort, shaking his head. "He tried to eat my gard - I mean," he hastily amended himself. "He tried to eat my food." Ren did not really tell anyone about the little garden he kept, right on the edge of the school grounds. It had been an unfortunate accident that the kelpie in question (whose name was Calder) had managed to stumble across it - literally.
"My sister and I..." Ren paused, tilting his head. "Well. Let's just say we don't quite see eye to eye on certain things....most things. Rather like how you described your own sisters," he added, somewhat ruefully. "We...tolerate each other, I suppose would be the best way to put it. My family is entirely made up of gryphons; we are a very proud race, and the fact that I am somewhat different makes them, shall we say, slightly less than proud."
Laughing a bit to himself, Ren shook his head. "Ahhh, but that is too depressing a topic to talk of when one is speaking with such a lovely lady. Shall we move on to other things? Such as what you think of the academy so far?"

Being from around was fairly normal as Belladonna hadn't traveled all that far for school either, so she shrugged the answer off. Certainly she didn't want him thinking she was going to stalk him on break or anything. That would be rude! And if anything she did not want to appear rude, as she was rather coming to like this gryphon in a way she wasn't quite sure of. He was laying the compliments on rather thickly, but it didn't seem malicious or as though he were trying to gain anything, which was totally different from any of the other compliments she had been paid by boils at this school... Hmmm.
"I suppose meeting one such as myself does not happen often..." Belladonna mused softly, one free hand reaching to tap the bottom of her chin in thought. This was just harmless flirting, right?! "You met a kelpie too! Was his name Calder!? And-and!" She was starting to flap one hand in excitement, the other clutching to Ren's arm. "He had white hair and little hooves? And he said things kind of funny maybe? Like-like... He's the one who thinks I like having my clothes ripped!" And then Ren said something that made her stop the flailing and actually stop altogether in her tracks. Perhaps it was just her wishful thinking and the fact that Belladonna liked to randomly pull thoughts from the air but had he said...
"Did you say garden?" No, no he hadn't but she was pretty sure he was going to. To make him more prone to telling her the truth, she turned her biggest pink eyes and pouting lips on him, even going so far as curling her free hand under her chin. The whole scene would probably have gone off well enough, but Galahad was glaring at Ren with one eye that was very close to falling out of the socket.

Ren let out a snort of amusement, twisting the leash around his fingers. "Yes, as a matter of fact, his name was Calder," he answered, shaking his head. "He was, ah...interesting, to say the least."
Or rather, annoying, but I won't go into that with her, Ren thought, casting a sideways glance at Belladonna. From what he could see just on the surface, she was probably the type who did not enjoy talking about negative things; not that he himself cared otherwise, but he didn't want to make her uncomfortable by going off about that damn kelpie who trampled my garden.
And speaking of gardens -
"Er," said Ren, slightly taken aback by the fact that she had stopped mid-step, jerking them both to an abrupt stop. "Er, no - " he added quickly, face flushing just the slightest. "No, no garden, I er...was going to say gard...en...za...yeah. It's, uh, my newest minipet, I, uh..."
Belladonna had twisted to look at him, eyes wide with anticipation, blinking long lashes. That sort of look was almost too perfect - or, would have been, had not her squirrel (if that's what it could even be called) leaned forward too, it's...eye....
That is one creepy pet, Ren thought, before letting out a resigned sigh. "Yes," he said. "Yes, I said garden. I keep one just on the edge of the school grounds.
"But it's a secret," he said hastily, putting his finger to his lips and winking at the witch. "So no talky."

Belladonna quickly interpreted 'interesting' to mean 'annoying' or 'rather unsavory in character and someone I would not normally consort with', as that seemed to be what Ren meant by it. At least that's what she figured until Ren mentioned 'no talky' about his secret garden and that simply could not do! Belladonna instead dropped her cute pretense to one of aghast that he would not want to speak of such a crowning glory.
"No talky?!" She very nearly screeched, only reigning in the noise when she remembered there were minipet's delicate ears to consider. "But-but-but!!" It was impossible to stop the little stamp of feet she quickly enacted, now clinging with both hands onto Ren's one arm. "But I love gardens! There's nothing to be ashamed of! They're living things that need to be cultivated and loved and taken pride in!" For a moment she paused, letting the emotion drop off her face as she looked up to Ren, her eyes still wide. "Is there a reason we can't talk about it?"
And then a thought occurred to her. One that would seal them together forever with comradere and similar situations. "Is it your parents?! Because mine are kind of weird about gardens too! I couldn't have one at my house because my sisters said mean things to my plants and my parents aren't very favorable to herbology like they are potions or hexes and charms. They don't even like kitchen witchery which is totally stupid, but you know parents. They don't understand anything!" At this point she had been talking as fast as was witchly possible, but finally she paused to turn and once again give her best innocent, 'please tell me all your deepest darkest secrets' face to him again. This time Galahad rolled his eyes and turned around so that his only half bushy tailed faced them, his little paws consciously touching the eye that was lose and trying to make it stay in place. It was probably best to ignore him now...

Her shock and outrage amused him greatly, rather than annoyed him. Ren held a hand out, pressing a finger lightly against Belladonna's lips in a friendly gesture, motioning for her to be quiet for a moment.
"Because," he said, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth (the little, defiant stamp of her foot was entertaining; it seemed to fit right in with her exuberantly cheerful, pleasant personality). "It's, ah...complicated."
Pulling gently on her arm, he tugged her forward again, resuming their walking. It took a bit of yanking, but finally Rhys and Takashiro got off of their behinds and followed semi-obediently, Takashiro dragging his paws tiredly until Ren knelt down, picking the incendia up and letting him curl around his shoulders like a scarf. It was less of a desire to be nice and more of a desire to not have to drag the little black creature on the ground.
Ren turned to look down at Belladonna, a brief expression of surprise flickering across his face. "Ah," he said. "Well. Yes. It's...sort of my parents, sort of the entire gryphon race, really." He paused. Ah, what the hell. Might as well just let it all out. Not like she's gonna do anything.
"I'm a vegetarian," he finally admitted. "My parents think it's outrageous that a so-called 'proud' species such as the gryphons could be anything but carnivores, so when I told them I didn't eat meat they nearly went into a conniption." Ren shrugged, vaguely amused by the reactions of his parents, but at the same time he felt a swell of irritation towards their ignorance, their idiocy. "I tried to explain myself to them, but after a while I just gave up, since there seemed to be no point in repeating myself constantly and getting the same answer each time."
Ren glanced over at Belladonna and smiled. "So, there you have it," he said, with an overly dramatic sigh. "My entire life story, in a nutshell."
