"Quick attack!"

"Rai." Adele launched herself at a sandbag. Pokemon and prop tumbled over a few times before coming to a rest, the pokemon sliding a few feet further than her target. Crouching, she growled at the sandbag, then stood, looking at her owner for more instruction.

"Nice job, how about double team? In a circle around the bag." Emilie, dressed in faded gray jeans and an oversized dark sweater instead of her trainee's uniform, didn't appear an intimidating, or even a very serious rocket, but the Raichu nodded.

"Rairai!" Adele dropped to all fours and started a circle around the sandbag. Faster, faster... oh dear. The raichu tripped and went flying. Into a stack of targets. Emilie winced as the white and red bullseyes clattered to the floor.

At least there weren't too many people in this particular training room. It didn't feature much besides a high ceiling for flying pokemon and, at the far end of the room, a small dirt circle for pokemon battles, surrounded by a shallow moat.

"Sometimes I have to wonder what your previous owner was thinking." Leonard said while looking at his Pokedex. "I mean, I'm glad that I got enough money to get a worthwhile TM for you. Attract? Really? Ok, it might be useful against female Pokemon, but how many of them are out there? There's probably a lot more guy Pokemon we have to fight. Or genderless ones. It's going to be no good against legendaries... not like we'll ever face one."

He continued walking down the hall, absorbed in the glowing screen. The Leafeon trotting after him gazed at him with a clueless expression. He had no idea what his trainer was talking about, just that he was to no longer use his charm in battle...

"See, now Swords Dance is more useful. It works well with your Grasswhistle. Since everything in the world and its mother is super effective against grass types like you, you have to put the opponent to sleep before you can set up. And then you can devastate everything with Leaf Blade. Or Last Resort, depending on the situation."

Leonard slammed the door to the training room open. He was oblivious to the other trainer in the room and kept on talking to his Leafeon.

"You wanted to keep Last Resort? Well to use it, we have to use all of your other moves first. That means we would've have to put the opponent to sleep and attract her at the same time. Which is needlessly redundant. But Swords Dance. Like I said, the two moves work well together."

He moved to the other side of the room and took out a training dummy. "I can't keep talking about it without seeing actual results though. Let's see how well your current moveset works."

Steve the Leafeon stared at Leonard. Then at the dummy. Was he saying to put the dummy to sleep? It doesn't even have ears! He sat there looking confused, then turned his attention to the other human and her Raichu that his trainer failed to notice even now. Even if he didn't know Attract anymore, he turned on his charm and begged one of them to help him with big eyes.

If Emilie jumped as the door crashed against the wall, she hoped that Adele was too dazed and the grunt too absorbed in his conversation to notice. The echo in here was something else.

"Think he's got a phone on that pokedex?" Emilie asked her pokemon.

Adele shook her head.

"Well, he's almost speaking loudly enough for someone on the mainland to hear him," she whispered, kneeling and poking the Raichu on the nose. Adele sniffled quiet amusement and swished her long tail.

"The Leafeon's pretty though, don't you think?"

Adele looked about to shake her head in an automatic no, but the autumn creature had turned pleading golden eyes in their direction.

"Hey wait!" Emilie grabbed at Adele's tail but the raichu was off, a few quick hops covering the distance between her and the newcomer.
