Kelebek pranced around the deserted field, chasing butterflies. She was fascinated by them, and found them the most beautiful things in the world. She wished with all her heart that she could one day grow a pair of flutter wings like Hathi. Or maybe momma could make them for her? She longed to feel a gush of wind underneath her as she could soar the skies.

Kelebek was day-dreaming away while she crouched and jumped stealthily after the butterflies. She'd never even dream of hurting one because they were just so beautiful! She fixated her eyes on one, and lowered herself down into the tall grass, her butt sticking out of the tops. The blue butterfly landed on a blad of grass and elegantly closed its wings. Now was the time to surprise it!

Kelebek lurched up and towards the butterfly, expecting it to fly away. But it didn't. Once she realized what was about to happen, she couldn't stop herself from flying towards the butterfly and knocking it down. She landed on it with her heavy body. Shrieking, she sprung back up and looked at the butterfly, hoping from the depths of her heart that she hadn't hurt it. She looked around frantically, hoping someone would be around to save the butterfly if it had been hurt.

The day was beautiful. The crisp cool air had the suns amber glow. The battle for spring was still yet to come, but today the weather was nice. Recently, a group of soquili had moved to the Hourglass Summit. Depending on your location, the climate could be drastically different. Here, the mountain walls seemed to frame this grassy node, keeping it full of life year round.

Hourglass Summit. The herd branched off into different parts. For some reason, his parents had taken up ownership in the discipline area. The idea of building a strong family always on his fathers mind. This seemed like his opportunity. For Vasu, this had presented him with a problem. His dad wanted him to get married. As the oldest in the family, even if only by a few minutes, he was to be next in line. Vasu thought this was just an excuse on his fathers part, to grief him over having never found a permanent mate in the last few years. With due reason! Or at least in his mind. Mares were fickle, and he flat out had a hard time with them.

Hok'ee went out of his way to search for mares with a suitable, strong bloodline. One such, the last he met, was a flutter. Adorable she was! Or at least by what his father had told him. He could imagine her in full. Vasu'raj had for a moment, thought his father was onto something. The mare, cute and tiny, had the wings of a monarch. He instantly did what he was good at, fell for the idea of her in a flash. They were due to meet in time, to make it official and get to know each other.

Then...that flutter got pregnant. With another stallion. She never arrived at Hourglass to meet him. This devastated him, once he had heard word. Hok'ee tried to explain that it was his fault. He should of known she was only out to reproduce, the signs were all there. It was for the better, or she could of left him after they were mated. Even still, Vasu felt responsible.

Trudging through the grass, shuffling his hooves, with his head down, he felt sorry for himself. Maybe he just wasn't meant to be mated. Despite what his father wanted. All the evidence for this was there. He couldn't see past this to see what the spirits might have in store for him.

THUMP Just then, Vasu'Raj ran into something. He watched as a flash of warm color formed in front of him when he raised his head up. The shrieking noise, or any words that might of been spoken as he approaches, fell on deaf ears. He had been so zoned out. She may of seen him coming, but probably didn't expect him to not stop! He walked right into the other soquili, losing his balance, and starting to fall right on top of them! His father would tell him that this is what he gets for dragging his feet around all day!

Kelebek saw the incoming stallion before it was too late. She was about to approach him frantically and ask for help, but she noticed his head hung low, which she assumed was a sign of sadness. Instead of bombarding him, she waited till he came closer so she could show him the butterfly. Despite the crisp air, the sun was shining behind him, making it difficult for her to make out his shape completely with the brightness in her eyes. He ran straight into her, knocking her over completely! Helpless compared to his big body, she lost her balance and fell onto the butterfly she had just crushed a moment ago. She let out another little shriek as she tumbled down.

Kelebek blinked a couple times, composing herself. Standing up was difficult, and her legs wobbled as she crawled out from beneath him. Shaking her mane to get rid of all the leaves, she was able to stare the stallion up and down. He seemed sturdy, but maybe since he was brawny he wouldn't have the brains. Still, there seemed to be no one else around so she was going to take what she could get. Her family was a distance away, and maybe he could help her after all!

She cleared her throat, and without introducing herself, she jumped straight into it. "Umm, hello." she uttered gently in her soft voice. "I hope you're alright! I guess you didn't see me. You really should look out you know!" Normally she would never have been so direct, but she was still upset about the butterfly. She walked around him slowly, checking to see if he'd got hurt. She pulled off a couple leaves and twigs from his mane and tail with her teeth, careful not to accidentally take a n** at him.

"I need your help!" she exclaimed. She lowered her head and motioned towards the butterfly. The beautiful blue bug lay flat on the ground, one of its wings struggling to move. It broke her heart to see something so beautiful and fragile crushed... and it was all her fault! Kelebek struggled to keep her tears at bay, but was able to appear collected. "Please help me! I think I hurt it!" Her voice shook, but she remained calm.

The black stallion wiggled off the other. Vasu slouched onto his legs, which were still folded below his body. He barely took notice that there was a mare in front of him. His attitude towards the female species, becoming less impulsive. This time last year, he would of been jaw-droppin-star struck, and fumbling over himself. Many times over a broken hearted lonely fellow, had released the sudden need to feel loved at first sight. Not all bad if he were to become all the more wise as a result, but he has instead become almost bitter.

Looking up to her, he cocked an eyebrow. She seemed overly frantic. Perhaps he had knocked into her harder than he thought.. With more than a few grunts, he got to his feet after she plucked a few stray pieces of debris from his mane. Dirty wasn't something that ever bothered him, but he didn't mind the help. It made him only snap to, and regret knocking the small mare over.

"I'm sorry. Did I hurt you?" he winced with a funny face. He'd feel more sorry for himself if he had. Of all the luck..wander around feeling sorry for the lost chance with one mare, only to injure another! Spirits help him. Or if this was their way of saying You're right...he'd be downtrodden for weeks.

Vasu rotated one ear and looked down to the ground in a daze. A wha....? He scrunched his eyes at the ground, and noticed an almost smooshed flat bug. Even though the butterfly was blue, likely a blue morpho, he saw a completely different butterfly laying there. He saw, a monarch...

The sight of the uncannily familiar bug swirled up a vortex of emotion in him. He felt dizzy and out of control. If he hadn't eaten that morning, he might of passed out. Instead, his eyes began to sting. The thought of the pregnant mare haunted him in his mind. She was a flutter than looked like a monarch, like this monarch. Vasu's chest began to move fast as his breathing increased. The air moved from his nostrils with a slight whistle.

Stomp on it! he told himself. This thought only caused a stream of hot tears to run down his left side, and his eyebrows to furrow together in a weak but angry expression. So much hurt, but it wasn't this butterfly's fault. He'd not hurt it further. It already looked in bad enough shape. He snapped his eyes up to the mare. "Why? What's so important about her?" he spoke as if addressing the butterfly, but knew in his heart he full on meant someone else.

Vasu stood there, his face a mess of emotion, staring on at the stranger. Everything about him suggested he'd wait to hear some important cure all answer to his question. He was so wrapped up in himself, he didn't realize she was near in tears over the little bug.

Kelebek helplessly stared at the butterfly and at the stallion, waiting for something to happen. She wanted to do something. Anything! She looked back up at the stallion for a hint at what she should do, but his gaze was fixed on the little bug, his face tense. Was he... trying to figure out how to save it? Kelebek could almost feel a disturbing vibe coming from him. She found it increasingly difficult to hold her tears.

Not knowing what to do, she nudged the butterfly's wing lightly with the tip of her nose, trying to get it to stand upright on its own, but it didn't. She let a tear loose, as she felt utterly useless. She couldn't just watch it die! Kelebek just heard him mumble something about why, and frantically spat out, "because he reminds me of my brother!" The hot tears were rolling down now, and she looked down in shame. She'd never cried before! She quickly shook her head, her curly mane bouncing about, and willed herself not to cry.

As she was looking down, she noticed a tear drop onto the grass. It came from the stallion. Was he crying? Was he crying for the butterfly? She felt a turmoil of emotions. Not only was she upset about the butterfly, but she was confused as to why he was crying. She'd never seen a stallion cry before! Well, that wasn't true. There was this one time she beat her big brother in a race. The memory brought her a fleeting moment of happiness, so she calmed herself down and thought of what to do objectively.

She kept her gaze down instead of looking up, not wanting to embarrass the stallion and let him know she knew he was crying. She was appalled at his sympathy for a mere butterfly, and found that she could relate to it. It made her want to get to know him. Well, once this tragic bug massacre was over.

"Please," she asked, still facing down. "Is there anything we can do?"

Vasu sighed. The air tightened around him with unease and friction. This moment was increasingly becoming awkward for the stallion. How could he possibly know what to do with a crumpled butterfly? He didn't know a lick of healing, as any non-uni most likely wouldn't. Could an unicorn even heal a bug? Doubt was the only thing that echoed back in his mind.

"I don't think there's much you can do, unfortunetly. I doubt one of the healers in the village could heal something so frail." his shoulders slumped even further, but the tears stopped. Honesty, even if brutal, somehow made him feel a little better. He looked up to the summer kissed mare, with her golden tones, and sighed. "They don't live but a couple of days anyways." he said as he looked down at the butterfly. He was trying to make her feel better, and likely failed at it. His heart was in the right place though.

He took a deep breath and studied the strange flitless creature. It seemed that it already stopped moving. "You could keep it. I don't know." he shrugged. The idea seemed rather odd after he spoke it. Thinking before speaking wasn't something he skilled in.
