Gray paws padded along the desolate landscape, head low, gaze fixed on the ground ahead of him. He walked along silently; he had learned to move like a ghost. The shadows were his friends, for he did not wish to be seen, heard, or bothered. He did not wish for company. Though who would be out here in this godforsaken place at this godforsaken hour aside from him?
He let out an inaudible sigh, coming to a stop before a tree. It looked as if it had been dead for ages, though he knew it only looked like that due to the season. The chill of winter had shaken the life out of it, and it would come back to life once it was warmer. He reared up on his haunches, placing his forepaws on the rough bark. He flexed his claws, slowly scoring the tree. It would be the only sign that someone had come here. He then looked up, and sprang off his hind legs up the tree, eventually climbing out onto a branch at least ten feet above the ground. He stood on it, testing its weight. After deciding it could hold his weight, he yawned softly, laying his form down upon the branch. He rested his head upon his paws, looking down at the ground.
How did it come to this?
No. He did not want to think about that right now. He was too tired, far too tired. He needed sleep. He could not remember the last time he slept. That, and he did not care when the last time he slept was. All that mattered was he needed to sleep now. No one was going to bother him anyway.

Not long after Tristan had settled, Juliette had stumbled along, rather sleepy herself. It was.. uh... Oh, who knew how early or late it was now, all she knew was that: she was bored, she was sleepy, and that she was absolutely gonna get in trouble for managing to squirm away from her parents at this hour. Oh, an- BAM! She had stumbled into a tree.
"Ow, ow, ow.." 'Ette shook her head quickly, rubbing at it with a raised paw. "Ow, ow.. Oh! H-hello there..." The young kit eyed the newly spotted stranger from down below the tree, trying to figure out in this silly dark whether this fox was a mister or a missus. Oh, but what about danger? The possibility of being kidnapped? Being attacked? Or.. or... or..
Pfft, forget all that stuff. 'Ette gave a flick of her tail as she looked him over.
Oh, they looked alright to her. Besides, this fox looked.. sleepy? When she became drowsy, she never felt like getting up and doing anything. Snuggling up into mommy or daddy or a sibling was the most you could really manage when you were half-asleep like that, really. So.. that applied to everyone else, right? The 'not wanting to get up' part, right? She was normal! So, so.. so this fox was just fine.
No, wait. Not 'this fox'. 'This fox' was a mister! He looked a lot like daddy, if you just pictured him without the extra fluff, and he had that mane of hair like all the other males she'd seen. "Hello there, mister." Instead of trying to scrabble up the tree like any other kit would, she just sat down. No pawing at the tree, no leaping at it, no whining for the adult to get her up there with him, she simply sat herself down. "What'cha doing way up there in the branches? You.." Juliette tilted her head to the side, trying to figure it out herself. "Hm. Yoooou..." Her voice trailed off into a small yawn. "trying to sleep, maybe?"
