The sinking sorrow within her grew heavy around her heart. She felt alone once again. Winter tried to lift her spirits, reminding herself that she still had her friends and family...they just weren't around. They were too busy with their own lives. The sadness wasn't like her usual light and cheerful self. She felt depressed and lonely as she walked the forest alone. Her thoughts began to drift to Ivory, her foal-hood companion. Very rarely had she shared an adventure with someone. It was made even more special with their own 'distant-family' connection. For once she hadn't felt alone. But now Ivory had grown up and was with his love. She didn't fault him for it, she wished she could do the same. It wasn't until her brink of adulthood that she began to wistfully wish for her own partner - someone to travel with, to spend hours in each other's company. Winter felt silly for these thoughts. The young mare walked aimlessly up to a small puddle, left over from the night before's showers. She stared at her own reflection, her white curls carelessly about her face with her special two-colored eyes peeking out from behind the waves. Winter stared at her blue form muted by the forest's shadows. She stared down at the puddle. This wasn't her...

Res trotted through the woods, his markings glowing in the sunlight. It was a sort of blah day for him, but then again, it was always a blah day for him. Half the time he was failing at getting a mare to even talk to him, and the other half spent him incredibly bored at even the concept of a mare.
He hadn't inherited a lot of his father's traits, but good taste was one of them.
He broke through a thicket and paused, sniffing. He smelled another soquili around, and he followed his nose to investigate.
The mare he saw as a pretty young thing, a pretty shade of blue and white... and looking incredibly depressed. He tilted his head and frowned, taking a few steps out of the trees and closer to her. Quite unlike his watchful nature, he said, "Something troubling you, miss?"

Winter turned her head towards the voice. The other soquili's presence surprised her, and mentally she scolded herself for not paying better attention. She paused and took in the sight of the male. He was dark even in the sparce forest lighting, and yet he seemed to glow in her eyes.
She took a moment to blink away any building tears before speaking. "Oh no I'm fine. I wouldn't want to bother you with it. It's nothing really, just me being silly." She feigned a smile.
Winter straightened up and gathered herself. With a quick flick, her bangs moved away from her face so she could better see the soquili. She hoped that now she wouldn't look so pathetic to him. "Hi, I'm Winter. Do you come this way often?" She hoped the change of subjects would help distract her thoughts.

(( sorry for the late reply. ><; I get stuck in a one track mind sometimes ><; ))
Res tilted his head, watching her. She didn't want to bother him with it? But it wasn't like he was going to think less of her for what happened or something. He stepped closer and nudged her neck gently with his head.
"You can tell me what's wrong. It's not like I have something else to do, or anything. And I'm Resonance. I wander around so... maybe?" he said softly to her, eyes watching. Something wanted him to let her just cry against him. That same part eyed her over and called her "Little One" almost protectively.
He inwardly snorted and rolled his shoulders. It was nothing. Just a random thought.

She scanned his face, unsure if it was genuine interest he had in her. Winter couldn't find anything to distrust of him, she sighed and lowered her shoulders in resignation. She knew it would help to talk. "Alright...Resonance." She laughed gently under her breath. "Just let me know when to quit if you heard enough, ok? Well...it really all goes back to when I was a foal. My parents and brother were always so busy staying close to home, that I would often go adventuring alone. Oh it was fine every now and then but as time went on...I found myself more and more alone."
Winter paused and glanced up at Resonance then quickly continued, "I suppose it was made worse when my friend found his own mate. Now it seems like everyone has someone or something better to do than...be with me."
Her eyes widened, "Oh goodness, that sounds so selfish." She blushed, embarassed she had wasted this stranger's time.

"That's not selfish." He said this with confidence after she'd finished her story. Automatically, he nuzzled the side of her face gently.
"I wish my father would notice me. That I was good enough for him, that he'd pay attention to me. And that's not selfish either." He told her this, eyes watching her. He so wanted to call her Little One. So badly he wanted to call her that. But he couldn't. He'd just met the girl after all.
So he kept that silent. And simply watched her.

It should have felt strange to have a new soquili touching her so intimately, but it didn't. The nuzzle was welcomed and Winter smiled. She eyed him again wanting to believe his words. Perhaps she could, she thought.
It was her turn to listen, and her heart grew heavy at his own tale. She wasn't sure how to comfort him, she didn't know Resonance well enough or of his father. "That isn't selfish." She shook her head.
A long length of silence stretched between them before she spoke again. "Do you have a special someone?" The words tumbled out before she could stop herself, and as soon as the last syllable had finished her cheeks were flushed.

The words surprised Res and he blinked at her for a moment. He shook his head after his brain caught up with her words and looked away from her for a moment.
"No... Not yet. I've been looking for someone to call "Little One," my little mare who'd always be mine..." and I think I may have found her, he added silently. But... he'd just met Winter. It wasn't right to do that to her.
'We have this thing, the males of my family, where we have to find this one mare who will be our Little One, or Little Mouse in my mother's case. Its something taught from our father, but some of it is in grained. I, though, don't want to end up scaring the poor girl into it.
"I want her to accept the name Little One with no fear of me. Which is why," he said, turning his face to her. Again, why was he spilling his secrets to this mare? Because she would give him good children yelled one part of his brain, while the other merely said Because you are. After a moment of silence, he continued. "Which is why, when and if I find this mare, she must choose me, and not be afraid to bear the name "Little One."" His grey eyes danced with some hidden emotion as he watched her.

"Sorry, that was too personal of me to ask..." She muttered to herself, barely loud enough for Resonance to catch it.
Winter was surprised that he answered her nonetheless. She turned to look at him, indirectly, she was still a bit bashful that she had asked him. "That's sweet. I think it's wonderful that you care so much..."
Little one... She thought to herself, such an interesting nickname... The mare started to wonder how she had ever come across such a soq. He was a complete stranger and yet he had been concerned about her. Her, this plain light blue mare.
"So...your family. Are you close?" Perhaps a change of subjects would help.

Res was completely confused by this mare. He was spilling his juts to her for no reason, simply because she was kind and he felt a sort of attachment for her.
Damn you genes, damn you!
He looked out away from her for a moment. "My mother and I are close. I don't... mean a whole lot to my father, and thus him and my siblings are close to me at all. My aunt, while I don't see her much, is quite nice. But, that's about it," he said, shrugging his shoulders to hide the sigh coming from him.
It wasn't like he didn't care about getting his father's attentions anymore... it was just so hard to get him to even turn an eye to him. Res sighed softly and looked back at her.
"I don't mind it so much... I'm just alone a lot," he said softly, not sure why.

"Oh," she stated - understanding the same feeling. "Well you already know my story about my family. ...I often spent my time alone..."
Her thoughts began to drift with her words. Of all the exploring she had done as a foal, nearly every adventure she was alone. Though it had been fun and entertaining, there was still a slight sadness to those memories.
Winter straightened up, not willing to let those thoughts keep her down. Speaking to Res had helped immensely and she was beginning to feel like her old self again. "Well we're not alone anymore. Thank you for listening, it really did help... Would you like to join me for a walk?"

Res' mouth quirked into a grin and he nodded. " I think a walk would do us good, don't you Li-... Winter?" he said, quickly covering his slip up with a smile and starting to walk.
He either had to get away from her, before he did something he regretted, or learn control over his instincts. His ears flicked; like that was going happen, either way. He was already quite... smitten with the mare, enough that thinking of leaving her was rejected. Res was also quite sure his instincts would not be controlled, one way or another. He let out a disgruntled sigh.
He really couldn't win could he?

Her gait started nice and slow as she moved across the forest floor. She glanced at Res, making sure she kept pace with him. He seemed deep in thought. "Is something bothering you?" Winter asked after he sighed.
