Nailah padded back to the temple, immensely proud of the small hare that hung from her jaws. She had finally been successful in her millionth hunt. Thankfully, she wasn't going to be a hunter when she was older. She was going to be a nanny just like her mother.

Grinning widely, she was going to find her mother and boast to her about her successful hunt.

Carnelian had a headache.

It wasn't a headache that was caused by hunger or thirst, he knew that much. The headaches had been coming more and more frequently along with strange flashes of lions he didn't know, and sometimes even voices. They came in shocking brilliance and Carnelian never knew when to expect them or what to do when they happened. Most of the time he just chose to sit (or collapse) and let them happen.

Mouth dry, he spotted a female carrying a hare. He was afraid that he wouldn't be able to make it home alone, and right now all he really, really wanted was to bury himself against his mom.

"Hey," he rasped, his voice weak. He hoped she could hear him. "Hey!"

"Hm?" Nailah's ears pricked up, looking around. She had heard a small voice; an extremely weak voice. Dropping her rabbit onto the sand with a small thump, she called out, "Anyone there...?" she asked, a little worried. The lioness hoped that whoever it was, they weren't badly injured. That would be quite a crisis.

It was then she stumbled upon a younger male, "Oh my..." she said, rushing by his side, "A-are you alright?" Nailah asked, concerned.

The world had a terrible habit of just spinning circles around Carnelian's head, and he didn't like it one bit. Although he knew the female that now approached him was whispering, each word she spoke sounded like a loud shout, like the crack of thunder. He swallowed dryly, closing his eyes in hopes that he might regain some sort of balance before he opened his eyes again.

"...such a headache," he mumbled, yellow eyes pleading with the female. "I just want my mom." Usually he'd be too proud to beg for his mother, but not when he was in such a way. He wanted Gella right now so that he could feel safe again.

"Can y-you help me?"

"Um...um..." Nailah fidgeted around a moment, not knowing what to do. "Wh-where is your mother?" was she back at the temple? They weren't too far from it, but considering how weak the boy was, it would be considered a pretty long trek for him. It seemed like he wasn't able to walk on his own either.

Not having any other options, Nailah grabbed him by the scruff gently with her teeth, half dragging, half carrying him back to the temple. Abandoning the hare in the sands, the lioness slowly trudged through the sand, careful not to hurt the boy.

"I-- I don't know," Carnelian almost wailed, fighting the urge to burst into tears. He usually took pride in being an independent fellow, but the spinning and flashes and ringing in his ears, the blurry vision and the dizzy spells... none of this was conducive to being the independent juve that he liked to think he was.

When she scruffed him, he allowed it. At least then he could close his eyes for a minute. It wasn't comfortable for him, and he imagined that he wasn't the lightest thing she'd ever carried. He glanced mournfully after the hare when they passed it, suddenly feeling a little ashamed of himself.

"I'm sorry about your hare," he whispered, trying to help her help him by attempting to walk. "Maybe I can catch you another one? When I'm feeling better, maybe?"

Seeing the pain that he was in only made Nailah more determined to take him back to the temple. She would usually say something back, but she couldn't because her mouth was full. Grunting as she almost slipped in the sand she could see that they were not far from the temple.

Oh...right. The hare. Well...there was nothing that could be done about. The choice between a dead hare and a another one of her kind suffering wasn't too hard to decide on. Obviously lions came before. A little grateful that Carnelian walked a little. It took a little bit of the load off, though she felt like her jaw was going to be ripped from her head.

'Almost there...', she thought to herself.

"I'm Carnelian," he thought to add helpfully, trying to ease more weight onto his feet. "Son of Scribe Gella and Guard Bufonidae," he added as he usually did when introducing himself, although this time around he said it with less gumption and more rasp. His throat was so dry and he couldn't wait to get closer to home so that he could drink his fill.

"I think I can walk a bit," he mumbled, starting to feel bad that she was going through all this trouble just for him. "Maybe I can lean on you if I get dizzy?"

Carnelian was it? Letting him down gently and moving her jaw around a little, her jaw muscles sore, "I'm Nailah." she said, "Are you sure you can walk? I don't mind carrying you." his voice was getting raspier, which worried her. Not wanting to take a chance, the lioness picked him up by the scruff again, making sure his paws touched the ground so he could try and walk if he wanted to.

The temple steps weren't too far now. A little bit more of treading and they would be there.

Maybe she was right. He really didn't feel like he could walk on his own, but the manly part of him wanted to do it. Still, he didn't want to take any chances. He'd been lucky enough that she'd been nearby when he'd taken ill, and Carnelian was thankful for that.

"I just want my mom," he muttered honestly, "but she's probably busy." She always was busy. Though she wasn't the most attentive mother, she did love each and every one of her cubs. Carnelian hadn't brought up his sickness to her -- he really didn't want to make her worry and fret over him.

Thinking about his dearest mama made him feel somewhat better though, and by the time they neared the temple steps he was feeling well enough to stand on his own. "Sorry about your hare again," he feebly whispered, shuffling his feet in the dust that coated the stone stairs.

Relieved that they had finally reached the temple steps, Nailah released her grip on Carnelian, pawing at him to try and take the sand and dust from his fur. It wouldn't do to enter the temple all dirty. After she shook all the sand from her body, and smiled kindly, "It's alright. No big deal. Now where is your mother?" she asked, "I'll take you there." walking up the temple steps, immensely glad that Carnelian was now safe.

He was glad that she wasn't upset about the hare. He really felt awful about it. "I'm not sure where she is. She's a Scribe and likes pretty rocks. That's why my name is Carnelian. We all have rock-names. I mean, my brother and my sisters do." He huffed softly, pale eyes peering around the area of the temple. She was usually here, but if she wasn't, well, he was certain he could make it to their den.

"You're real nice," he said gently, softly. "I'm glad you helped me. I don't know if I could ever get home by myself, not when I don't feel good."

He caught sight of Gella's yellow pelt glinting in the sunlight, and he gave a small sigh of relief. "There she is," he gestured, "but.. don't follow me, okay? I don't want her to worry about me..."

"That's pretty interesting." she said, moving around her jaw a little. With a little rest tonight, it should be all better. "It's nothing..." Nailah mumbled, "It was the right thing to do." smiling nonetheless.

"Oh...alright then." Nailah felt a little proud of herself. She had helped someone get back to the temple when they were ill. "I hope you get better..." she said, staying put.
