Alkaid had finely come to a decision - it was time to quit moping over a past that she could no longer remember and start living in the present where she had a job and duties to perform. She could take out her frustration on Rhodizite later, learn things on her down time, but right now she had a responsibility to Queen Beryl.

She was standing on top of a building, staring down at the street below, searching for potential.. victims. She wasn't sure what she was supposed to do once she found one, but she had purposefully chosen the elevated spot so she could see someone coming and form a plan before she had to act on it. The whole thing would have been a lot easier if Rhodizite wasn't busy moping over his missing girlfriend instead of doing his job and teaching her.

She sighed and propped one foot on the edge of the building, leaning over a little to stare at the street below as if someone or something might be hiding from her and slipping along the side of the wall. Seeing no one, she stood back up straight and dropped her foot, reaching up to run her fingers over a long dread in frustration. How did the negaverse always get so lucky in finding her? She was failing miserably at finding anything.

It had been days since Saiph had seen Alkaid standing alongside Nemesis during the battle against the strange Ice Witch who had tried so hard to claim their world as her own. Days since she'd heard from Khalla. No phone calls, no emails, nothing. And Saiph was very quickly beginning to panic. She'd taken to stalking the places where they'd enjoyed hanging out in the hopes of catching sight of the other girl and being able to catch her long enough to talk.

Had she done something wrong? Saiph had wracked her brain, trying to remember the last conversations they'd had. She was fairly certain that she hadn't done anything bad enough to drive away her best friend.

The Primordial senshi was on the ground, hugging the shadows as she searched and patrolled. She wanted a quiet night without any Negaverse trouble. Really, was that so much to ask when her friend was out there somewhere?

There, she'd seen it! A glimpse of bright green just barely caught by a dull street lamp, connected to a dark shadow moving in the shade on the far side of the street. She could feel a power signature, which meant it wasn't a civilian and the general feeling told her wasn't a negaverser either. That meant it was fair game!

Alkaid drew her hands up level with her shoulders, palms turned upward, and called out her attack. "Misguiding Light, Magnified!" accompanied a large, glowing ball. With both hands cupped beneath it, she tossed it in the direction she had glimpsed the senshi, sure of her aim and her ability.

Her eyes locked onto her own masterpiece, pouring her concentration into it and beckoning the senshi forward. While doing so she put her other foot atop the building ledge, pulled herself up to stand on it, and took an easy leap down to the street. She landed in a crouch that she easily stood from, eyes never leaving the glowing ball that had soared so far ahead of her.

She was getting her first chance to prove herself and she wasn't going to waste it - now just to see who this senshi was and how matched she would be against them.

At first, Saiph was too focused on her hunt. Then, a soft glow caught her eye and held it. Amber eyes going wide, she stared at the glowing ball and then reached out a hand as if to touch it. Without thinking, she followed the ball, her focus moving away from missing friends, away from patrolling. All that mattered was following the ball. A mack truck could have come hurtling down the street at that moment and still, Saiph would have followed the ball.

This isn't right! a tiny voice deep inside her mind screamed. We have to find Khalla, not follow a stupid ball!

Shut up, us! the greater part of Saiph's mind shouted back. We want to follow the shiny.

Saiph paused, trembling visibly as she fought against herself. She badly wanted to follow the ball and forget everything else. But at the same time... Everything that made Saiph a senshi: her loyalty, her strength, her belief in what was RIGHT was shrilling across her brain and her nerves, warning her against blindly following a strange ball of light. Saiph took another step after the ball and hesitated. The ball was reminding her of something. Something she'd seen not so long ago, though it hadn't been as bright as this. If only she could remember!

And in the middle of the deserted street, a single senshi stood shaking as something deep inside fought against the lure of the strangely glowing ball.

A tiny, wicked smile turned up one corner of Alkaid's lips. She could see the senshi struggling. That meant that this particular senshi was strong willed, though not enough to throw off her power completely. Even in that half struggling state she belonged to Alkaid, she was subject to her whims. And that's right where Alkaid needed her.

Alkaid walked closer, slowly, her eyes locked to the glowing sphere hovering closer to Saiph. The soft click of her heels echoed off the sides of buildings on the empty back street, an ominous serenade. She brought herself into Saiph's sight, standing level with the glowing sphere that had captivated her opponent. It was the first chance she had really gotten to use it and up close.. she had to admire her masterpiece.

"Not strong enough," she said softly, her intense eyes having left the sphere and locked onto her puppet instead. It was harder to concentrate like this, but she didn't need the orb but for a moment longer. With that wicked smile still lingering on her lips, Alkaid took a few steps forward so she could stand right next to Saiph. She drew one dark, gloved hand back and curled it into a fist. Then, without a moment's hesitation, she let it fly - aiming squarely for the senshi's stomach. The ball of light flickered and finally died moments before contact was imminent - but an unmoving target was really hard to miss.

Instinct was at war with magic. Saiph could see the face across from her own, she could see that smile that meant trouble. And yet, she couldn't react. How long she might have stood there became a moot point as she felt a fist drive into her stomach, knocking the wind from her.

Gasping and doubling over, Saiph sank to her knees and held her stomach, desperately trying to suck air into her lungs. Even as tears streamed silently down her face, she was hoarsely giving voice to a string of obscenities that would have impressed a sailor. As breathing slowly became less painful, instinct had her shifting her position, getting her feet under her, muscles tensing to surge up and beat the s**t out of whomever it was that had punched her. Forcing her eyes to focus, she saw the black shod feet of her attacker and smiled grimly to herself. Well, if they wanted to play, she'd play.

Moving quickly, she kicked out a leg, aiming for the back of the other's knee. She didn't want to break anything, she just wanted to give them a dose of pain and move out of striking range.

A small, displeased frown spread across the corrupted's face at the string of slurs - how completely and utterly distasteful. Her hand drew back and curled into a fist again, ready to take a swipe at the senshi's jaw. Fortunately she saw the first shifts of movement and managed to stop herself from taking any steps forward - but that didn't move her out of harm's way entirely.

As the senshi kicked out, Alkaid was leaping backward. The end result was not a foot striking against the back of the knee but instead a hook that caught the back of her heel. It didn't feel very pleasant and it had the added benefit of making Alkaid stumble slightly. She fell to one knee, her gloved hands shooting out to catch her fall. She couldn't help grimacing at herself. She should have known better than to try for a second attack at such close range without the sphere.

She pushed herself back up to her feet quickly (grimacing as she felt the twinge of pain once she put weight on her heel) and leaped out of range of the other. She smoothed the pain away from her face and brought her chin up, staring calmly at the senshi she had chosen as her target. "You recovered more quickly than I expected."
