Nalani listened to the birdsong above her head, a group of starlings were greeting the early morning with a will, calling back and forth and trilling loud enough to wake any nearby sleepyheads. She wasn't one of them, because she liked birdsong so much she was always up before the sun was, watching the light seep across the sky and listening to the sounds that greeted the new dawn.

She stretched as the noise trailed off, shaking out her mane and shivering a little. The day was another cold one, frost crackled on the grass and the trees and she was beginning to slightly regret standing still for so long but really it had been worth it. One day the gentle mare thought she might have the courage to raise her own voice and join in, but really she worried that it wouldn't be seemly, and she didn't want to look foolish. Nor did she want to catch a passersby ear and be made fun of for however weak her voice might be.

With a little noise that made a white cloud hover before her face for a moment, she turned and slowly began to wend her way back home, heading for the warmer trees and shelter that the thicket she had grown up in afforded. She was quite far away though, having gone out early and headed for a small hill so that she could see the sunrise properly.

Frost Feather flew low over the snowy lands, smiling happily as his strong wings beat the air and keep him aflight, and his shimmery blue mane was tossed back by the frigid wind that he caused in his flight. He flew happily, though much lower than his normal height, thanks to the wind getting colder with each new height he took to. He enjoyed the wind however, even though he shivered slightly from the cold. While his mother welcomed the cool of winter, he himself was not adapted for the colder weathers like his foreign mom. She came from the north, and he grew up here his entire life. He was glad though, she had come. She was different from his father, and his sister, but even without wings she was amazing in her own way. Frosty too, strived to be like that. He laughed alittle into the cold air and did a small spin before scanning the landscape, looking for somewhere warm. He could learn to brave the cold better, later.

It was then though, he spotted a small discolor in the frosted hills, a rich red violet, with black around it. After another shake of his mane, Frosty blinked, wide-eyed at the splotch in the once undisturbed landscape. After a few short moments, he came to realize what that discolor exactly was -- a mare. Happiness found its way to his face in the form of a smile and laughter, and he watched the mare a little, just to observe if she would accept company. She seemed to be watching something, but seconds after he had spotted her, she began to walk away. He blinked abit in confusion, but curiosity took over him, and his wish for companionship allowed him to swoop down toward the lonely figure.

"Hello! Hey, miss!" He shouted, fluttering to a soft landing a bit of a distance infront of the mare, his blue and black eyes shimmering with his sweet nature. "Hello miss!" He exclaimed, though politely. He gave an innocent grin and approached her slowly, bowing his head abit in respect. "I was wondering what you were doing back there. What's your name?" He asked curiously, standing tall and happy.

Nalani had at first dismissed the nearby wingbeats as possibly belonging to a returning bird, but they became louder and heavier sounding and she realised that a bird it could not be. She twisted her head upwards and behind and then returned to the front as the alicorn landed in front of her.

'Hello.' she said, dipping her head and greeting him in the formal manner, her mane slipping forwards as she did so. She straightened again and gave a soft smile. He was certainly bright, looking and in nature and she found herself warming to his manner straight away.

'Listening to the dawn chorus.' she replied, and then added;
'I'm Nalani, it's very good to meet you sir.'

She almost felt a little plain against him, feathers and wings, a horn and such patterns! He seemed a very fine gentleman indeed.

Frosty's smile also brightened as the mare seemed to welcome his presence, his company. It had been too long of a time, well, at least for someone as outgoing as Frosty, since he had had the company, and especially that of a female. His first female friend all the way from his foal years had been busy in the mountains with her hideouts, and Frosty himself, busy with his travels. His other friend, whom was male.. well, one never really knew what that stallion was up to, and more often than not he appeared spontaneously for short bursts of undiluted excitement and energy, before disappearing again to what Frosty didn't know. Frosty's familiar too, was male, but the skittish hummingbird had flit off to tell news to his mother, about his whereabouts, under Frosty's request, and promise that he wouldn't stray far from the very place he told the hummingbird to go back from.

"The dawn chorus?" He chirped in slight confusion, having never really been too in tune with music. Other than his familiar Pip, Frosty had fleeting encounters with birds, most in the skies when he soared with them. "What do you mean?" He tilted his head a bit, but shook it and smiled as she introduced herself.

"I'm Frost Feather, but everyone normally calls me Frosty. It's great to meet you too, Nalani." He replied, shaking out his mane alittle as he observed the mare abit at a closer distance, admiring her intricate, pale yellow patterns. He also took notice to the flora planted right where her tail met her rump, and blinked at it, growing excited, since he had never seen such a flower. "What's that flower there? It looks really pretty." His tail flicked lightly as he waited for answers, and he couldn't help the slightly childish expression he kept seeming to get from his naturally cheerful personality.

Nalani looked a little taken aback at his question, but recovered herself quickly and answered him in a pleasant manner.

'Have you never had chance to hear the birds first in the morning as the sun rises? They greet it so prettily with their song, and it's my favourite sound of the morning. I often rise early to listen to it.'

She took a moment to glance over him once he had given his name, and she found it highly appropiate.

'A fitting name I find.' she said with a dainty little laugh. She stood still as he looked at her from a closer position, but her heart fluttered a little faster in case he was going to be as forward as the last stallion who had first admired it and then taken a bite from the last bloom!

'I thank you, it is a lotus flower. My dear Grandmama, who I take after, wears one on the base of her plaited tail.'

Frosty listened carefully to Nalani's words, and begun to think. His mother was always an early bird, and being as a foal, he was always very attached to her, he would rise early with her for a stroll in the mountains nearby the grove they had come to call home. In order to take such a walk, they would have to rise even before the sun and birds. However, the trek to the mountains was long enough for the birds to rise before they met the steep rocks and the tranquil path.

"Oh! I have heard them before!" He exclaimed, grinning and hopping abit on his hooves in excitement at his rediscovery of the bird's first songs. "It is a pretty song! I never really thought of it as a greeting to the sunrise, but that's a really interesting thought! It is as though they're singing to the sun!" He laughed cheerfully, remembering the small birds he would hear in the mornings when he rose early enough. Even Pip, his hummingbird, liked to chirp when he woke early. What a great new vision he had now, of the birds!

He let himself have a moment to muse over this new thought, before smiling at her and nodding brightly. "Thank you!" He laughed, his tail flicking a bit as he listened to her explaination of the flower at her tail. "A lotus? I've never seen them before, but it looks really pretty. It suits you." He gave an innocent grin, his words not fresh nor forward, but simply honest. "My mother wears something similar. They are the feathers of my father. She has one behind her ear and also on her tail, like your flower. I don't have anything like that yet. I did find this necklace though!" He laughed, nodding his head down to the cresent at his chest, with a cute smile. "I got it while on an adventure with a friend."

Nalani nodded, pleased that he'd obviously been struck by a recollection, and that he took evident pleasure in the sounds - it meant he was attentive to things outside of himself, which was always a good trait in a male she felt.

'It's pretty much exactly like that, and hence the name 'dawn chorus'.' she said, smiling back at him, enjoying his open and amiable nature. He was very different from the last stallion she had encountered, so much so that she was feeling quite at ease with him (though never forgetting to be on guard for a slip in her own behaviour).

'No? They are generally found on bodies of water, floating prettily on the surface. You'll see them more in the warmer months though.'
She nodded at the pendant he spoke of.

'An adventure? I would enjoy hearing of it..if you have the time to tell the story.' she asked and then smiled again.
'Oh but you have all those feathers! My little flower could not compare.'

Frost gave Nalani a sweet smile as she confirmed his thoughts about the name of the first song of the day. "It makes a lot of sense. The dawn chorus. cI like it!" He chirped, stretching out his wings a bit to get the chill out of his feathers. He mused to himself alittle, enjoying the kind demeanor of this mare he had found. Lucky he was, to have encountered such a sophisticated Soquili out in these hills. He had encountered his fair share of less than friendly Soquili, and it was a welcome experience to find a kind one to hopefully fufill friendship in.

"Really? Perhaps if we can meet again, you could show me where they grow in the warm months?" He asked politely, smiling in his cheerful manner and giving his signature grin. He smiled once moer as she asked about his adventures, and he laughed, nodded and moving his hooves against the frost. It was then that he realized how cold they had become, and gave a shiver. "I certainly can tell, and do have the time to." He replied quickly. "But perhaps we could find some place warmer to stand? Frost may be in my name, but I don't believe my hooves like it so much." He laughed, grinning at her jokingly, and his wings fluttered abit. He blinked at her comparison and shook his head, laughing once more.

"But your flower is so pretty! And it is also a reminder of your grandmother! My feathers are but some adornments I picked up as a foal." He exclaimed, smiling brightly. "Little cannot compare against a lot when one holds more sentimental value than the other right?"

Nalani gave a little nod of assent.

'I'd be happy to, I'm looking forward to the warmer seasons myself.' she smiled, watching him moved his wings, eyeing the way the feathers lay, so much like the birds only on a far larger scale.

She giggled softly, nodding again.
'We most certainly should move, I would not wish you to catch cold on my behalf.' she said, looking around to see if there was anywhere nearby they could find some sort of shelter. Well, for the moment the best thing would be to just move, get the circulation going. She really wasn't the kind of mare who went off alone with a strange stallion and so she would prefer if they went where there were others.

'I would say you are right sir. But yours must mean something if you still go around with them on you?' she moved a few steps as she spoke, her leg muscles complaining slightly as they had gone stiff from standing still in the cold air.

Frost smiled lightly as she agreed to showing him more of the lotus blossoms come the warm months. The idea made him a little giddy, and in response, he shuffled his hooves and fluffed out his feathers a little more, a happy grin plastered against his face. "I will look even more forward to the warm months now then." He chirped, hopping alitlte on his hooves in his cheery mood. This was a wonderful encounter he was having. A new friend, a new flower, and now.. a mare staring at his wings? "Is there something on my wings?" Frosty asked curiously, spreading them again to try and discover the reasoning behind what seemed like Nalani's fascination with them. He stopped though, as she spoke and laughed lightly, looking around abit as well to see if there were any warmer havens for his hooves.

"Oh it'd take more than a little frost to get me sick. My mom's from way up north, where it's always winter! So I have tough winter bearing genes!" He laughed, but then grinned sheepishly. "Course, the ones that let me stay out in the cold for long periods of time certainly need some touching up." He chuckled, and then waited for Nalani to pick a path to go. From the skies, he had been too concentrated on flight to truly notice anywhere nearby that would make for a good shelter. He was confident this mare would know better than him.

"Well I suppose, but they are more decoration than anything. My mother wears feathers from her homeland, so I wove a few into my mane when I got older, and over time I just kept adding more until I got what I have now!" He told, smiling as she moves and he too turned abit and stepped foward, waiting for Nalani.

Nalani looked away, her face colouring.

'Apologies for staring sir.' she said quickly, hoping he'd not been offended by her scrutiny. She composed herself and with an upward tilt of her head looked at Frost Feather again.

'No, nothing other than a marvellous layering of feathers that allows you to soar to heights us groundeds can only dream of.' she said softly and eloquently as she began moving.
'My birth siblings, both my brothers were born with wings. They get them from my mother. Sometimes I have a wistful longing to have been blessed with them as well, but I am content with my lot and so never complain.'

Nalani smiled, looking around as they walked slowly down a path of sorts. She was sure that nearby there was a small wood that consisted mostly of evergreen trees and so amongst them they would be warmer, sheltered from the stiffest of the wintery breezes.

'Well I think even the hardiest of souls like a measure of comfort now and then.' she paused for a moment and turned slightly towards him.

'They do suit you though sir.' Nalani gave him the little compliment with a nod of her head and carried on walking, feeling light on her hooves as she was enjoying his company greatly but wasn't sure enough of herself to be more than her usual amiable self.

Frosty quickly shook his head as Nalani looked away and apologized. "No no! No need to apologize!" He babbled quickly, smiling happily as he listened to her explanation for her stare. He blinked at her conflict with being grounded, thinking back to his own family, whom three out of four had been blessed with horns and wings. His mother was the one like Nalani, however there was much more to the mysterious mare that made her lack of wings so negligible. He smiled and followed after her as she began to move. "Well perhaps you lack the blessing of wings, but you certainly had recieved a blessing in beauty." He smiled at her, honest in his words, rather than false flattery. He looked up alittle, and thought for a moment, before speaking again.

"Perhaps you don't necessarily need wings to fly. When I was a foal, I would often climb to great heights and the wind up there makes it almost like the illusion of flying. My mother has told me before that when she runs, many have told her she looked as if she had wings on her feet!" He exclaimed, smiling happily and skipping alittle as they walked down the sort of path. He was content with the way Nalani acted and how kind she was. He could only hope this time would last, since he seemed to rarely come across other Soquili, let alone the kind hearted ones like Nalani.

He gave a hearty laugh as she mentioned comfort, and then his cheeks tinted a hint of unusual pink as she complimented him, and he gave his cheerful grin, albeit with a touch of flusteredness. "Thank you Nalani." He chirped, feeling upbeat and happy someone thought his rainbow feathers suited him. He skipped alittle, with alittle more flutter of his wings, enjoying the rare compliments he recieved and accepted so easily. He gave her a smile as she walked and followed quickly. "Perhaps I should start my story? It is not too long, but it would take some time."

Nalani smiled with a degree of relief at his hurried assertions that she had done nothing wrong. She still felt slightly that she'd lacked a little of her usual grace in staring so but he seemed not to mind. And then it was her turn to colour again at his compliment, and she almost stammered when she went to thank him but gained control over her words just in time.

'..I thank you.' she said, casting little glances at him from under her lashes. Oh but it was too good to be true that she'd met such a wonderful gentleman. He was surely mated, and therefore felt able to speak with ease to a single young mare.

'Oh but I don't know if I could..I mean I'm not very brave with things like that.' she made a little nervous sound at the thought of climbing to a very high height. She was sure it would result in being able to see a marvellous view but she knew she would have to strain and climb and get all kinds of dirty. No, it wasn't right for her to do it, there really wasn't a ladylike way of climbing a hill or mountain!

'You're welcome sir.' she almost added a few more words, surely he got compliments all the time?

'Yes, yes I'd be happy to hear it. Please do go on.'
Nalani steered them quietly down one direction as the rough path forked, her head tilted towards Frost Feather so that she could listen fully to him.

Frosty gave a wide smile as Nalani turned colors to his compliment. He knew the response meant well, and he took a skip and flicked his tail abit as he shook his head. "No need to thank me for telling the truth." He chirped, grinning and laughing softly, smiling more at the way she looked at him, from beneath her lashes. The shyer pose gave her an even sweeter than normal look, and he found himself unable to keep from being all the more cheerful that he could stir such reactions from a lovely mare, even though the reason why he was recieving such looks surely eluded the dense stallion. He gave a blink though, as she responded to his story of great heights, and laughed happily.

"Well you never truly know how brave you are until you take a step forward toward a challenge right? I'm sure you could. You seem very strong-hearted Nalani, and courage comes from the heart." He smiled at her, and shook out his mane as he walked, following her closely and happily. "There is even a trail I believe. My mother took me on it when I was a young colt, since I could not brace the rocks nor fly away should I have made a mistake." He remembered, thinking back to the trail with his mother, and how he'd skip along and ahead of her as she walked, dignified and calm, and careful, somehow knowing exactly when there was a time to react to Frosty's careless foalhood moments.

Frosty gave a cute laugh and nodded as the colors receded from his face, and he was told to go on with his tale. With a smile, he recited his memories of those days. "Well, back when I was just a small colt and only really had started exploring, I had met my best friend, Umbra. She had alot of these hideouts up in the mountains, little caves sorta, and she shared them with me once we became friends. While wandering through one of the caverns, exploring, I spotted a shiny thing amoung a heap of the glowing blue flora that seems to grow abundantly in the tunnels. Turns out it was this cresent right here, and Umbra and I looked it over, and she said I should keep it." He laughed softly and looked down at his necklace.

"She hooked it onto this beaded necklace she found in the earlier days of our explorations, and hung it over my head, but we thought something was missing. So I thought to add a couple feathers, rainbow being my first pick. On the otherhand, Umbra thought black would be better, and well, who am I to argue with a filly's color coordination skills?" He laughed once more, and stood proudly, his necklace sparkling lightly in the cool winter. "That's basically my story about this little thing here." He chirped, looking to Nalani and giving her his sweet smile once more.

'Really? I still don't know though, Frost Feather.' Nalani replied, confusion crossing her pretty face. Maybe it was okay for her to go if it was the company of a gentleman like himself? After all, his mother had taken him, and she must be a fine lady herself. She turned her head away as more compliments were given; for a moment she regretted being so very proper about everything as she felt a desire to inform the stallion how well his attentions were being recieved, he was making her heart quite light the more they walked and talked.

She raised her head as he spoke again, determined to look as unruffled as possible, regaining her gentle countenance as she listened to his talk about how he found the pendant at his neck. She smiled, imagining him as the adventurous little colt he had surely been, wondering if this best friend he spoke of so warmly was someone that was a significant figure in his life still. She had to imagine she probably was, she could imagine that she was an elegant mare and his heart companion, and this tale was just a gentle way of saying that he was spoken for.

'Sounds like you've spent many a memorable time with your friend, I'm sure you'll have many more to.'
After all, she couldn't outright ask if he was attached could she? That was far too forward. No, no he would have to inform her of that himself, although he probably was.
