My mom is convinced I have an iron deficiency and is trying to get me to take these iron pills along with my multivitamin. There are 50mg of iron in the supplement and 18mg in the multivitamin. Is that a safe amount? Some of the things I've read about iron overdoses kind of freak me out. And I don't want to be constipated.

I'd recommend actually seeing a doctor to find out if you have an iron deficiency before taking any extra supplements besides your regular vitamin.

I am one of those people who does not go to the doctor until I feel like I'm dying ... and I am terrified of having blood drawn. I pass out every time.
I guess I will just see if the iron in my multivitamin makes me feel better first. I've been really tired and pale lately, plus I'm a vegetarian so I'm already getting less iron than most people.
The label on the iron pills actually says to take two pills a day ... that's 100mg and 556% of your daily value. Which is way more than I'd be taking with just one pill and my vitamins.

Paleness and weakness can be signs of really serious health problems, not just an iron deficiency. You really should go. :[

Valise I am one of those people who does not go to the doctor until I feel like I'm dying Then you're probably also one of those people who's going to finally end up going to the doctor when it's too late. And then you'll think "Wow going to the doctor probably would have been worth whatever issue I have with it."

I am not going to go to the doctor because I am tired a lot. I am asking a question about VITAMINS.

And I'm answering a question about vitamins. 4laugh
If my understanding is correct, the recommended doses for vitamins is so high because your body can't assimilate as much of the, in your case, iron without other things in iron rich foods.
If you're already taking you multivitamin, then continue. if that's not making you feel any better, look for iron rich foods. Obviously you'll be looking for some kind of vegetable with a lot of iron, which I think isn't too hard to find. I can probably find some examples for you.
If you start to see improvement after the iron rich foods and wish to see more improvement THEN try the iron pills. Also, the dose on the bottle is RECOMMENDED. which means you can take whatever you feel comfortable with. If you want to take 75mg a day, go for it. cut a few of those suckers in half.

Quote: Iron can be obtained from many foods in your diet, but you only absorb about 1 mg of iron for every 10 to 20 mg of iron in food, so you need to eat a balanced diet of iron-rich foods. Some foods can actually block the absorption of iron and should be avoided in combination with iron-rich foods. These include coffee, tea, milk, and soy protein. Other foods help your body absorb iron. "Adding vitamin C in the form of orange juice, tomatoes, or berries can increase your absorption of iron-rich foods," Brennan says. According to the American Dietetic Association, cooking foods in a cast iron skillet can also boost the iron in your food. source

Also: Quote: . Absorption of iron from food is influenced by multiple factors. One important factor being the form of the iron. Heme Iron, found in animal sources, is highly available for absorption. Non-heme iron on the other hand, found in vegetable sources, is less available. source

Sorry to throw so much information at you. I'm actually good with this sort of thing. XD Quote: What are the Symptoms of Iron Deficiency Anemia? There are many symptoms of anemia. Each individual will not experience all the symptoms and if the anemia is mild, the symptoms may not be noticeable. Some of the symptoms are: Pale skin color, fatigue, irritability, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, sore tongue, brittle nails, decreased appetite (especially in children), headache - frontal. How will I know if I'm Anemic? If you believe you may be anemic, ask your doctor and he will perform some tests. The tests are simple. Some of the tests are: red blood cell measures of hemocrit and hemoglobin; size of red blood cells, serum iron level, and iron binding capacity in the blood. sourceObviously you don't plan on seeing a doctor at this time (I don't blame you, ew needles) and probably won't because of the tests. but I do encourage you to get these tests done if you can't manage this on your own. Feel free to contact me. I'm going to stop posting. XD /Nursing Assistant

Thanks!
I actually drink a lot of coffee and tea (pretty much everyday, today I had both) and eat a lot of soy. That in combination with not eating meat has probably caused this.
For now I will try just my vitamins and if that doesn't help I may go up to one iron pill a week.

I take an iron pill every day. I have been anemic for a while and had a few of the symptoms Fig mentioned. I suppose they help, I'm not quite sure yet. I get blood drawn again next week. Fig pretty much summed it up. If nothing seems to be helping after a few months you should consider a doctor's visit, though.

I take an iron pill and multivitamins every day. The iron pills are 20mg which is just slightly over the RDA, and I have multivitamins which don't have any iron. And I'm actually anaemic, the iron pills are prescribed.
So 50mg seems like a hell of a lot to take, especially if you don't know if you need it.
