Ok, just a short introduction.
I don't think it's a good idea to be working on two fan-fics at the same time, but I just couldn't help it. This fic was actually the first Hetalia fan-fic I ever began writing, except that I had never finished it. This version is extremely revised and has a lot more things added. This fic is somewhat through America's eyes, via his journal. In teh first version, I had only posted his journal entries. Just recently, I had been wanting to finish this fan-fic, but when I went back and looked at what I had written...yeesh! It needed some revision. So I thought about how i could possibly improve it, until i had thought of something.

So anyways, I hope everyone likes it.
I kind of took a chance by incorporating a fan-made Hetalia nation: Philippines. If you don't like this, please don't chew me out, just tell me nicely. DX

I know, one last thing. You may think AmericaxHungary is a crack pair...but ti quite isn't. I've done a bit of research and I've found some interesting things. This fan-fic is historically accurate.

Anways, here it is: The Hero and the Crown.
(yes, there will be more chapters. Also note, this is serious Hetalia. There won't be comedy. Sorry. neutral )
Comments appreciated!
=================================================

It was that time of year again, when all the nations would gather annually on memory of that one war. Of course, it was not for those that had won or lost, but to pay respect for the tragedy and to honor it; hoping that nothing of that scale would ever happen again.

“I really hope things don’t go to bad you know? I kinda like all of this actually. Just that…some of them are still a bit sour on all of this,” Alfred said with a sigh, which was followed by a quirky chuckle. He returned to what he was writing on one of those memos that were always provided in the hotel desks.

“Don’t worry kuya, Im sure it’ll be fine,” Maria* beamed at him, and refocused her attention on the thermostat, making sure that the heater was on. It was a cold day, and possibly even colder in the small hotel. The curtains to Alfred’s window were pulled to the side, exposing the pregnant rainclouds unloading their bellies onto the earth.

Alfred had only gotten to the city two days prior, since he was one of the Main Ones to help see that all the preparations were going smoothly. The hotel was nice of course, it wasn’t too small or too grand (Since some of the nations most likely wouldn’t have been able to afford a room in a grand hotel anyways).

Pausing a bit from his writing, he stretched in his chair, turning his head towards Maria. She was flipping through channels on the television, mainly stopping to see the commercials or game shows. Alfred swiveled the chair around to see what Maria was watching, as he guessed, another game show.

“Say, you nervous about all this?”

She didn’t look at him but simply said, “Just…a bit. How about you, kuya?”

“Well, im a Hero, but yeah im nervous haha. Well, not exactly about the Banquet or anything…but yeah. But im sure everything will turn out right.”

“How long until the Banquet, im hungry Alfredddddd……” she flipped over on her back, appreciating how soft the bed was.

Alfred clutched his stomach in response, “Yeah, I am a bit hungry myself, haha. Want me to go get something to eat?”

“Yes!” her face lit up at the mention of food, just like Alfred’s.

“Wanna eat some burgers?”

“Hmmmm, that’s alright. Im sort of in the mood for chicken right now actually, but it’s fine kuya, you can choose.”
“Are you sure? I mean, its fine. I like both,” Alfred laughed. “it’s no big deal to me. Besides, whether you like the food or not at the banquet, that’s all we’re getting for tonight. So it’s better if you eat up now.”

Maria couldn’t stand the thought of going the night without food she enjoyed. Last year the food wasn’t too bad, but she never knew, it could have gotten worse. She reluctantly nodded yes.

“Alright then, I’ll be back in a bit,” Alfred said, grabbed his coat and exited out the door in his search for food. Maria turned back to the television, it was getting boring. It was the same old routine for the game show she was watching. Some overweight guy, singing with a song, if he got all the lyrics right he was guaranteed a certain amount of money. As the amounts of money progressed, so did the difficulty of the songs. She sighed, knowing Alfred, it would probably be a while before he got back. He wouldn’t notice if she rummaged through his things, would he? Most likely not.

With a sly smile Maria walked gently over to the desk he was on. ‘Damn,’ she thought. He had taken the note he was writing. But there was something else that had caught her eye the two days she had spent her with him. Alfred has an old leather journal. He read it almost constantly, making sure it was safe before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She had never seen him that protective over anything (except the world, since he claimed to be a Hero). She walked over to his suitcase and zipped it open. He hadn’t even made an attempt to hide it properly, it was simply on top of his clothes. Maria zipped the suitcase back up carefully and flopped on the bed.

It certainly was a beautiful journal. It was a tan journal, covered by leather. It was smooth and felt precious in her hands. With a simple pull she undid the knot on the front of the journal allowing the secret contents of it to be viewed by the light. Maria was gentle in allowing the words to be touched by light. The pages were aged beautifully, as the fading ink decorated the entire page to an almost ornate like fashion. Maria skimmed through the pages, Alfred had not dated any of them.

“Huh, that’s strange,” she said to herself. Anyways, she would read it. The journal would kill some time while Alfred was away and take her attention of her hunger.

“Ok, let’s see why kuya is so protective of you….”

I.

Everyone seems to be tired and depressed now. I know the Depression was my fault, but I never saw it coming! I mean, I feel real bad too, but I didn’t know. How should I have known about that over-production. Even the Hero is being beaten down by this. And well, Ludwig is having it hard, the others were a bit harsh on him for the First time....and now they're blaming it on him, again.

Ah, well anyways, luckily it’s passing. Thanks to the war. It’s great that im the Hero and helping everyone out, but to tell the truth, im tired.
I think we all are.
Even Arthur, he’s so big and everything, and seeing him get clobbered by Ludwig all the time, it’s a bit hard. (Don’t tell him I said that.)

Well, it’s kinda hard fighting a war on two fronts. But like I said before, im a Hero, I’ll get through this. I’ve faced harder times, of course! I have to keep on spreading justice no matter what!

Actually, the scenery around here is pretty nice, of course, it doesn’t compare to the woodlands back home, the Great Plains, or the Desert, and of course nothing like my coastlines, but it’s pretty nice. But man, I’d give anything to be back home holding a burger. A trip to the soda fountain would be nice too, or a night out with a girl on Swing Street.

Although, it’s a bit weird you know, but that Hungary girl has been trying to negotiate peace terms with either me or Arthur. What’s weird is that she’s part of those Axis guys, I really can’t put my finger on it, but I guess she was truthful. She tried a lot of times, of course we never got anywhere, but yeah, I really think she was after peace.

In fact, the last time she tried, Ludwig caught her trying to sneak up to where I was. I heard some sort of scream, and being a Hero, I rushed to wherever it was coming from. She had tried to resist when Ludwig got a hold of her, she cursed a bit of course. I actually winced a bit when he had to make her shut up with a punch to her stomach.
I…wanted to help, but I couldn’t. I just couldn’t.

I heard from Russia the next couple of days that she was back on the front lines exchanging bullets with him. Apparently Ludwig’s superior is making him watch her in her house just like that Austria guy.

I couldn’t really help but feel she didn’t exactly mean to fight, at all.

I didn’t see her much until the war ended.

Maria didn’t know quite what to say actually, or think. This was Alfred’s journal about the war. Strange though, he had many others, in fact he had shared most of them. But Maria had never heard about this one. He seemed to focus on Elizabeta though…Alfred wasn’t much to focus on anyone. She decided to keep reading, until she heard the door knob being turned. It was Alfred! He had come back sooner then expected. Maria had to hide the journal somewhere, Alfred would be furious! Without thinking much she placed it under the pillow just as America had come in and closed the door; his hands were full of bags of food. It smelt wonderful.

“Kamusta ka na?” she asked nervously.

“You know how I am. Well, c’mon, let’s eat,” Alfred beamed. He set down the bags down on the writing desk.

It wasn’t much of an enjoyable meal. Maria had her mind on the journal the whole time. What if Alfred had decided to look into his suitcase, only to find the journal missing. She would be in so much trouble, but she also wanted to read more. Alfred paid little attention and thought she was enjoying herself.

Half-way through the meal his phone set off. Alfred pulled his phone out of his pocket quickly as if his life depended on it and answered it.

“H-hello?” He sure was jumpy about that call. No matter, she attempted to enjoy the food, or what she could of it.

“Oh hey…mhmm, sure. that’s no problem. Actually it’s being pushed back a bit until a later time, but yeah don’t worry. So you’re here?...” Alfred went on an on. His face was lit up, this was certainly more exciting than food. She was wondering if Mexico would probably bring his dog again, it was a cute (and evil) little thing.

“Alright, I’ll be there in a bit. Bye~” the ending sounded a bit, softer. He turned to Maria.
“Hey Maria, I’ll be back in a bit again. There’s someone I have to go pick up. See you in a bit,” he said grabbing his coat again and rushing out the door without waiting for her response.

‘Well, that was convenient,’ she thought. Wiping her hands on a napkin she pulled the journal back out from under the pillow, relieved.

Now here comes some real life history, yay.

When I stated that the other nations were harsh on Germany at the end of WWI, it's because it was reality. Germany signed the Versailles Treaty. In signing the treaty, Germany acknowledged responsibility for the war, agreeing to pay enormous war reparations and award territory to the victors.

Hungary joined the Axis powers under pressure from Germany. Hungary relied on Nazi Germany and Facist Italy to help pull itself out of the Great Depression. Although when Hungary joined the Axis powers, it was hoping to avoid any direct involvement in the war.

And finally while fighting with the Soviet Union, Hungary began secret peace negotiations with The United States and the United Kingdom. But Germany discovered the betrayal and occupied Hungary in 1944.
