I, an Atheist, was having a discussion on morality with my Christian friend (perfectly civil discussion, no religion-bashing involved). It was mostly her asking me the very specific details of what I think happens to you after you die, and she ended up asking me a question that I found to be the funniest thing ever. But apparently some people actually believe this...

Question:Isn't the Atheist version of death really scary? I mean, floating in blackness FOREVER. You'd be so bored.

Now I'm won't speak for all Atheist's because our beliefs have nothing in common other than disbelief in any god, but I do NOT think you float in, uh, "black" when you die. Here are a few reasons that would never happen:

1. If you don't exist after death, you have no concept of time, for you don't exist. You can't be bored.

2. You have no emotion anymore. It can't be scary.

3. You don't EXIST anymore. You AREN'T floating because you aren't THERE.

4. An eternity of nothing was (as far as I know, any Christians are free to contradict me) the original version of hell before all the urban legends about flames and torture came in. So, um, the Atheists are going to spend eternity in hell? Oh, the irony.

Any thoughts, arguments, or comments? It's not really a very discussion worthy post as much as it is a story, but I feel social, so talk to me. xp

lol

On another note, I pretty much agree on all of those points. My family is Jewish/Catholic and we practice the religion (sans going to church/temple, but we like, observe all the holidays and stuff), but I think that's what my parents believe too...The religions of my family are weird. confused

I love that.

Dimentia, what do you think would happen after you die? Is it really the end of existence? Or do 'you' move on to another place after your body gives way?

This question is open for all Atheists. I just want to see the different opinions, or maybe the lack thereof.

If you were to ask a humanist Atheist like me, most would tell you that all the organs would shut down, ending with the brain. With that, there's nothing else. You're existence is over. You would just be considered an empty shell. There is no spirit, so there isn't any kind of moving on to anywhere.

Simply put, you die. Through and through.

I like simple.

I can't help but think that all these after-death stories are spawns of human infatuation with the supernatural. Or fear of death itself.

Most people think that religions are created from the fear of death and lack of intelligence in a topic.
An example would be cartoons making fun of island tribes believing in a volcano god. They don't know how a volcano works. Oh yeah, it's a god.
Simply put, need something comforting? Something to easily understand for you? Make it a religion.

'You' are your brain. You can change if you take drugs, suffer brain damage, etc. Your personality depends completely on your brain. There's no reason to believe there is anything more there.

What I believe? Ah, let's see... well, obviously your brain and organs shut down completly in death, and since I've never believed in the existence of a "soul", I would think that your personal identity and memories are gone for good the moment you choke.

Of course, depending on how sci-fi you want to get with the term "you"... the particles that make up your body will break down and become soil, and so they do have the potential to make up new life.

So... weird, slightly disturbing Atheist version of reincarnation. Yeah. xd It would probably make a really awesome TV series, though.

I really don't know, but I'm going to assume that without a living body to support my mind and consciousness, I'll forget the idea that the 'I' or 'self' has it's own existence and instead just exist in relationship to the whole. My guess would be that existence would consist of decomposition that could potentially lead to the growth of new life, but more than likely I'll end up being ashes or a cadaver that really doesn't equate much to the living human consciousness.

In other words, the matter I consist of will more than likely go on, but this idea of 'self' or 'soul' or 'spirit' are just that, ideas. Like I said, without a functioning live brain to support them it's much like asking what happens to your fist when you open your hand.
