[ location : fangroot ]

Here he came, Baneberry knew. He could smell him, hear him, and from where the small ferret crouched, he had a perfect view of the small clearing. Watching the male raptor bank his way down to land, Bane resisted the urge to laugh, a gleeful grin on his face from his hiding spot.

Soon, he'd have a pair of his own wings, and then Stonebeak would definitely have to take him when she hunted! This had to be one of his best ideas, yet.

When he thought Laird might have his attention elsewhere, the ferret darted forward, bounding on all fours to leap for a handful of feathers. Hopefully the raptor wouldn't miss them!

Laird suddenly swept a large wing out, intending to knock the small ferret away. Honestly did the young have no sense of self preservation anymore ? If he'd been in a less forgiving mood he could have responded with far more open aggression than this.

Baneberry tumbled back, landing and rolling head over heels with a loud "Umf!" Pausing a moment before picking himself up, he glared at Laird, tone indignant.

"Why so selfish, then? I just want a few feathers! You'll give 'em here, won't ya?"

The answer was no. The youth had no sense of self-preservation.

"What do you want feathers for ? You're too small to be giving presents to the ladies." Laird certainly hoped so anyways, the last thing he wanted was to see the pathetic attempts of children to proclaim their love for one another. As he spoke the dark feathered male stalked towards the youngster, head tilted in curiosity. Not that he intended to give the boy any of his feathers anyways regardless of the reason.

"It's not a present!" the ferret proclaimed loudly, but in a way that clearly implicated some sort of female was involved. Puffing up his little chest, a grin came over his features as he noticed something.

Stonebeak was a girl. Laird was a boy.

They were both really grumpy.

It was perfect. Examining Laird's feathers, he spoke his thoughts aloud. "My friend is the best hunter out there, and your feathers are like hers. I thought if I borrowed some, she'd teach me, then..." He peered up at the raptor. "I could even tell her you loaned me some! I'm sure she'd want to meet you."

So this boy knew a female of his kind, Laird wondered which one as Fangroot was a prime habitat and home for many of them. Even Laird himself had not met all the other birds of prey who were part of the tribe. Still, he wasn't about to loose any of his plumage just for- wait what? It had taken a moment for Laird to fully process what the pale furred scamp had said.

"You want feathers so you can hunt like a falcon or hawk? Feathers won't let a rodent fly." The idea was laughable but Laird was too mature to laugh.. well right this second anyways. Later when he'd set Baneberry straight he'd allow himself a chuckle or two at youngsters today.

A snort of derision, and Baneberry gave the raptor a scornful look, folding his arms across his small, puffed out chest.

"No, duh, they won't, bird-brain! I never said I wanted to fly, just that I want to GO WITH HER."

He wasn't the most charming of kits, really. "Anywaaaay," it was dragged out, and he reached to try and tug on yet another feather. "Are you gone help me, then? You should!"

Laird hopped back, keeping his feathers just out of reached and clacked his beak open and shut in irritation. The nerve of this kit was, well common for Fangroot but still manners would be nice. " You cannot have my feathers right now," he grumbled " perhaps when I molt next I will give you some." Assuming the little ferret even remembered or still cared by then.

Laird was once again staring into the impudent kit's eyes. " If you wish to hunt with the female like me, tell her you will follow her anyways if she does not take you willingly." Baneberry was small and while Laird could sense craftiness in him he would need protecting, most in the tribe would not want him chasing after them and stumbling into trouble on their watch.

The raptor felt guilty about teaching the boy how to manipulate one of his own but it was better her than him.

"You're real smart, Mister... Saaaay..." Bane's little face wrinkled in thought as it occurred to him that neither had introduced themselves properly. "What's your name, then! I'm BANEBERRY, best of the best!"

Yes, that sounded the proper way to do it.

Once he heard the bird's name, he wagged a claw-tipped finger at him. "Thanks for the help, Lardy-Laird! We're friends, now! I'll come back and play with you soon, then?"

A cheeky grin and the ferret was off through the underbrush, presumably to harass the female raptor. Good job, Laird.

Laird had absolutely no intention of 'playing' with the kit if he could avoid it. Sparring maybe when he was a bit bigger, perhaps teaching him the odd thing or too if he asked correctly but playing, Laird had not played since the days when other adults had started given him looks. Playing was for those like Baneberry who were young enough to get away with it.

He was responsible and mature now, Laird thought as he launched himself up into the air. He was also definitely not laughing at the idea of perhaps showering the kit in his molted feathers at some point in the future. Perhaps when the proud little beast was attempting to show off or even better concentrate.
