This should be good. Real good. One calloused hand slid the cell phone back into the pockets of his worn jeans, now that he had called the number on--Ryuu?--that guy's card. Ryo, yeah, that was it. He had told the other to meet him just outside the city, in the grass plains. It would be a good place to fight. Anyone could gather to watch them from a safe distance, while still being able to witness the full spectacle...but that wasn't the reason Ven had chosen the spot. There were no forests around, no place for the Shadow Fox to duck into and hide while the Jerk circled helplessly above. "Marty! We all set?" Ven called up to the mechanic who was checking the Jerk over, grinning as he received a thumbs up in response. Good. As the platform was lowered, the man stepped on, rising up to the Rainbow Jerk's cockpit.

"Hey bud. You ready?" A soft, warbling sort of croon floated from the zoid, and the cockpit slowly opened. Chuckling, Ven slid into the seat, disabled the security code, and brought the zoid to life. A low hum filled his ears as the panels before him lit up. Below, Marty, his mechanic, opened up the roof. Ven lifted one hand in a sign of thanks, then pulled down the main power lever on the Jerk. Jets fired, and the bird shot up at incredible speed, soaring through the sky to glide over the city. "Ahh, this'll be fun." He murmured to himself, gliding the Jerk down to the fields below. Metal feet reared up, planting themselves firmly in the ground as the wings tucked back at the Jerk's sides.

Ryo wasn't anywhere to be seen...and Ven didn't think the man would be low enough to sneak up and attack him. If he was, well, his opinion on the man would be lowered severely. The Shadow Fox should be a good, difficult opponent...Ven was looking forward to it. The judge-capsule nearby was motionless, waiting for another opponent to appear. A piercing shriek echoed from the Jerk, signaling that it too, was ready for battle. The man smiled affectionately, adjusting his fingerless gloves. "We're gonna do good today; I can feel it."

::Smirking as he tucked his phone away in his pocket he marveled at the large canine in front of him. The mechanic off to his left admired the black and golden beast for a second before addressing Ryo.::

Now everything is set up, and I mean everything. The Vulcan is working, the multi-sensor is fully online...

::The mans voice slowly faded out as he approached the zoid, stroking the large metallic leg softly, before climbing up the zoid and hopping into the cockpit. The orange-gold glass slid down over Ryo, as his hands grasped the controls for the first time. Firing up the Fox, it reared its head back and gave a ferocious roar, pawing his foot along the ground as well.::

Well hello to you too buddy.

::The Zoid reacted oddly to its new friends voice. Cocking its head to the side as he recognized this was to be his new master for life. Making a slight yelp in acceptance the Shadow Fox awaited Ryo's command. Gripping the controls tightly, he waved nonchalantly to the mechanic and charged out the garage, making a sharp left turn leading away from the city. Ryo fuddled with a few switches inside the zoid, finally finding what he was looking for. Flipping the master-switch to the mulit-sensor, a small display popped up just beside his controls. Smirking he found what he was looking for and darted for the Jerk's location. Another notification popped up as he charged the zoid through the outskirts of the city, notifying Ryo that he was to reach 65% of his top speed in just under ten seconds. Grinning, he pushed the zoid harder, the electronic speedometer pushing over 200 kilometers. Appearing infront of the Shadow Fox and growing in size was the waiting Rainbow Jerk. Grinning, Ryo slammed the controls back, the Fox skidding to a stop. Flipping on the com-link he addresed Ven.::

Howdy partner. Nice location.

As the Shadow Fox raced towards them, Ven marveled quietly over the shining hull and the simple grace that the zoid emitted as it moved effortlessly. He remembered when the Jerk had still been new...granted, it ran as smoothly as ever, but the feelings had changed. He had felt pure adrenaline and excitement, able to dip through the sky without any care in the world. Yes, truly a wonderful feeling for someone's first time in a zoid.

"You're pretty fast." Ven responded with a grin, able to see Ryo now through the virtual screen. "Though I wasn't expecting any less." He wasn't truthfully; he had heard bits and pieces about a Shadow Fox's capabilities. So far, he wasn't being disappointed. "If you're ready, then shall we begin?"

The Rainbow Jerk's wings flared up, sunlight bouncing off the metal to create brilliantly distracting flashes...but Ven wasn't attacking. He was simply waiting for the other to start as well, not going to take off the ground until the battle had truly started. He played fair, it seemed, and expected other's to do the same. He angled the Jerk's wings a bit, making it so that the streams of light would not directly hit the Fox. No use blinding Ryo already and not getting to see what he was capable of.

The judge capsule stirred, opened, and revealed the little mechanical bot inside. "Ready?" It's voice boomed over the field. "Battle...begin!" Both arms were broght down in an X like motion...time to go!

::Grinning from his cockpit, he switched off the com-link, and thrusted the controls forward again, darting just by Rainbow Jerk. Off the field he may have been a polite and kind gentlemen. However once he got into the reigns of a zoid, his whole persona changed. The 30mm multi-direction vulcan cannon performed a quick 180 degree turn as it revved up and began firing towards the direction of the motionless Jerk. However, seeing that Ryo was pushing towards 280 kilometers, the accuracy of the cannon was bound to be effected, nonetheless he continued his short sustained bursts as Ryo brought the Shadow Fox around once more, the Fox's right claw beggining to glow in preparation for the attack he was about to attempt. The Vulcan spun around in tune with the sharp turn, never loosing its target, the continual fire raining down upon the Jerk. Smirking Ryo gave his zoid a small lecture.::

Well buddy, this guy seems to think that hes a bit of a macho man in that fluffy bird of his. What do you think about that?

::The Fox growled in a very low tone as he continued his charge, his speed pumping up to his maximum level as the speedometer notified Ryo that he would reach 290 kilometers in 10 seconds. Grinning Ryo prepared for the Strike Laser Claw, the forepaws of the Zoid glowing brightly now as he approached the bird. The Vulcan Cannon ended its barrage as the Shadow Fox bounded forward reaching 30 meters of the Rainbow Jerk. He jumped the Fox when he was within 20 meters of the Jerk, his right paw extending back in preperation for the strike.::

Ven's teeth were gritted as Ryo unexpectedly began an assault, the Rainbow Jerk vibrating heavily underneath the gunfire. Not good. The zoid seemed to stumble to the side, trying to get free from the continuous fire. With that happening, Ven couldn't launch off properly. So much for fair, but he had started this, eh? Suddenly, he caught sight of the Fox's paws at it charged towards him. Right, because he was going to stand like a sitting duck. Both wings flared out, the razor-sharp tips screaming towards the fox. It'd have to move, or get gouged badly. At the same time, Ven forced the Jerk off the ground, shooting into the sky. Oh sure, the Shadow Fox might be fast...but how would it handle mach 2.5 speed? Grinning, Ven chuckled aloud to himself, angling the Jerk straight over the Fox and opening fire.

It was an ariel manuever; he would swoop over head, accurately aiming the guns on the bird's neck at the Fox. Sure, it could keep running and looking pretty...but if it didn't do something fast, it would take damage.

"Don't slow down yet, the fun's just starting." He spoke over the com-link, face alight with enjoyment. This would be a good battle; he might even be forced to use the Jerk's best technique...if of course, he could drive the Fox away enough so he had time. The Jerk was a zoid full of risks; one of the reasons he liked it so much. Dipping low, the Jerk was only a good ten feet off the ground, shooting forward with all the speed it could muster. Wings were spread wide, hoping to seriously damage the Shadow Fox. It was risky, being so close to the ground...but Ven didn't mind.

::Gritting his teeth, Ryo had to make a choice. One way to avoid the attack would be to spin the Fox and let it fall on its back. A rather rash move, most likely injuring his Vulcan. The second choice seemed more tactical and probable, so Ryo made the drastic move to engage his leg anchors. Slamming the hind legs down he enabled the leg anchors, causing all of the Fox's momentum to die as the metal anchors jammed into the ground, dragging slightly but finally stopping. The Fox jerked around awkwardly, but allowed Ryo to manage to espace the major damage of the wings. Just out of his peripheral however he noticed the bird swooping around, its neck guns beggining their assault. Releasing the leg anchors, the Shadow Fox jerked sideways with unmatched maneuverability, the Vulcan Cannon firing back.::

Nifty little move there Ven. We could make a good team all in all.

::Laughing over the com-link he continued his escape, hoping the bird wouldn't be able to react to the quick jump. Ryo's head began to fill full of ideas, one of which included the net gun on his tail. It would be a risky attack, but the outcome would be well worth it. However, if he did manage to find someway to get a head on shot of the bird with the omni-directional vulcan, he could strip it of its armor in quick fashion. It had been said that the Vulcan pierced a judge-capsule through and through and still managed to hit its target on the other side. Smirking he waited to see how Ven would react.::

Another com link opened up in both Ryo and Ven's cockpits. It was Devi, who was just able to see the battle in the Shield Liger. She'd missed the first few strikes, but so far, it looked like she'd only missed a little.

"Neither of you is going to make a good team member if you're both dead, so take it easy. Both of you. I'll be right here to step in if anything bad happens, okay?"

She stuck out her tongue and smiled. Shield Liger was ready for a fight, but it'd have to sit this one out. Devi herself was a little nervous about whether or not she'd be able to contain her joy at seeing a battle. Shield Liger was pumped up and completely intact now, but it had had a steep price. She'd just managed to escape the wrath of her mechanic and get outside for the battle. With any luck, the fighting would attract some people from inside the city and they'd finally have some more pilots to battle. Zoids were how people made the best of friends and the bitterest of enemies. Both were fun to fight.

The battle was exciting. A quick land Zoid versus a swift flying Zoid. They were both worthy fighters, but only one could win. Unless there was a tie, and that would probably prolong the match, which suited Devi just fine. Shield Liger gave a little small growl to show it wasn't happy just sitting on the sidelines. Peace was not fun if you're made for battle.

Rich, amused laughter was the man's only response; this battle was fun. It had been a while since he had managed to go against someone who was at his skill level or better. They would make a good team, incorporating both speed and power into their attack patterns. The Jerk was a good, strong zoid, but tended to slip of the defense level. Since it was quick, and was an flying-zoid, it was difficult to hit it. There was always that chance though. A quick glance to his right showed him that Devi had shown up with the Shield Liger all repaired. He quickly returned his attention to the battle however; the Shadow Fox was not something he could underestimate. Especially when the pilot knew how to handle it.

"Yeah, well, I've got a few more tricks up my sleeve."

His tone was smooth, confident in his abilites. For a moment, his dark eyes settled upon the tail of the Shadow Fox. There was a gun there--something that had to do with electrical nets, right? If he got too close, there would be no way that he could save the poor Jerk. Opening fire once more, Ven steered his zoid up and away, out of range from that tail. Time for a new plan. The wings were rotated forward by a few degrees so the sunlight could reflect off the sharp feathers. In response, blinding flashes of light were bounced towards the Shadow Fox, trying to blind it so that he could swoop down for another attack. All the while, he kept his gunfire up, trying to either hit the zoid with either one method or the other.

Abdiel happened to be one of the pilots attracted to the scene of the battle, the Gun Sniper keeping low and well out of range as it stalked cautiously to the fringes of the field. His Zoid was small and lightly armored-- it was definitely meant only for special ops, not this standard combat that the Shadow Fox and Rainbow Jerk were engaged in. It's silvery metal 'ears' were tilted up in curiosity, matching the intrigue of the rookie at its controls.

This was ten thousand times better than watching televised battles. The sleek movements of the Shadow Fox, the effortless flight of the Rainbow Jerk, both locked into this deadliest of dances, were best enjoyed in person. The power and glory of those Zoids wasn't lost upon Abdiel, and he struggled to keep up with the battle in his head.

The more that he watched, the more he dreaded facing either of the two in battle. Neither was inept at piloting, and even though they might have something to learn, he certainly didn't want to be one of the ones that had to fall on their way to the top.

Crouching, the Gun Sniper kept up its wary observation, briefly noting the Shield Liger across the field. Almost hoping that he wouldn't be noticed, Abdiel kept a low profile, content simply to watch until the battle was finished.

::Ryo's eyes began to squint as the over-powering glare of the sun caught his eyesight. Cursing in his cockpit he knew he had keep out of the birds direct line of sight. Jumping the Fox to the left, he was out of the glare of the sun, however, his eyes were still lightly blinded. Snapping out at himself for falling into Ven's ploy, he engaged the leg anchors once more, stopping the Zoid full. Grinning as his sight slowly came back, he disengaged the leg anchors, and swithched directions. Two light pangs rang out from his multi-sensor and two new blips appeared. Opening the com-link he chuckled.::

I suppose we have some spectators... and Ven thats annoying.

::Laughing somewhat maniacally, the Fox bounded across the grassy plain, then spun around skidding to a halt, and opened a more accurate burst of fire directly at the Jerk. As he settled in on his firing position, he brought the tail of the Fox to an upward position just incase he did have an opportunity to use the net-gun.::

By now, Shield Liger's tail was moving back and forth. The action was getting to it, and it was getting more excited by the second. Devi was also excited, but she wouldn't be making a move anytime soon. This was a battle of men, and she didn't feel like interupting it. She'd have her chance at both of them later on. And that excited her even more. She could take the wait. These two were good.

"You're impossible Ryo. Not saying that's a bad thing though."

She smirked again, and relaxed her hands off of the handles she had been clutching on to. She had to keep a hold of herself. Liger was doing a good job staying put, so she had to too. It was interesting though. She saw Zoid battles almost everyday, and she always got nervous that she would jump in. She never did though. Both she and her Zoid knew better than to go straight into a battle without being one of the contenders. That would land them in deep trouble. With a lot of people. Devi'd taken the time to think about all the people who'd be ticked at her. Of course the two pilots, Marc, probably the judge-bots... Did they ever get mad? She shrugged and thought about it.

Another throaty chuckle rippled over the com-link, and Ven shook his head slightly. "So it seems. And what fun would I have if it wasn't annoying?" Briefly, he glanced to the blips on his monitor, wondering what the other zoid was. Ah well; as long as it wasn't some idiot who was going to try and jump in, Ven didn't mind if he watched. After all, both the Jerk and Fox were pretty impressive to behold. Heck, if he wasn't the one fighting, he'd probably try to sneak closer so he could watch as well. Amused, he turned his attention back to the Shadow Fox as it fired once more. With a loud whoop, Ven dipped the Jerk's wing down, letting it almost free-fall. This was going to be a problem if neither of them won; the Jerk had already taken some damage, and he wasn't sure if he had hit the Fox at all.

Spotting the tail, Ven let out an amused sound; he'd have to be careful. He was debating using the Jerk's special technique now, but he'd need to drive the Fox off a good distance...it didn't take nearly any time to raise the tail, but if he fired that net gun...it could get ugly. He swooped down at the Fox from an angle, opening fire before jerking up. He wasn't getting close enough to land any hits, wary of that gun...but what could he do now? He'd let Ryo make another move before deciding.

::Shouting an expletive at the top of his lungs as two direct hits rumbled the Fox, he disengaged the leg anchors and made a mad dash directly for the Jerk. He snapped his anger into submission as his thought process began to function again. Grinning from ear to ear, Ryo's mind raced with two ideas, both of them equally suicidal, but nonetheless would pay off. Now the question was did he want to dismember Ven's Jerk, or simply disable the Zoid. Personally Ryo himself had never been much of a fan of Zoid killers, but when the situation arised, he would never hesitate. Nonetheless, since Ven was a future team mate, he decided to put the dismembering tactic aside. Ryo pushed the Fox as hard as the beast would let him. The tach display flickering between 290 and 291 kilometers. Grinning as he reached well below the Rainbow Jerk, Ryo flipped a switch just next to the Vulcan's trigger, and squeezed. The 70mm Electromagnetic Net Gun took off, the small cannister speeding a a very high velocity towards the Jerk, it would expand into the net as soon as it reached within range. After expanding, the real fun would begin as it would first entangle the Zoid, and then send massive volts of energy through its systems momentarily freezing it. Thus being at the mercy of the Fox's strike laser claw, which Ryo had no intention of using anyhow.::

Well if that doesn't work, this fight might take a little longer than expected buddy. You're doing a hell of a job by the way.

::The Shadow Fox yelped happily as it sped from underneath the fleeting Jerk. Just off to his right, Ryo spotted the Shield Liger, not yet seeing the other hiding zoid, but noting his presence just off his right shoulder not more than 5 kilometers from Devi. His mulit-sensor would definately come in handy in later battles with his team members.::

Enjoying watching your future partners in crime Devi?

::Ryo gave a sinister chuckle as he opened up the com-link once again.::

Devi laughed to herself. Ryo was a little egotistic, but he wasn't a jerk. It was fun watching him battle. Ven was doing a great job, considering he was fighting a very fast Zoid. And Ryo was impressing her by being able to handle a Zoid that he probably had never piloted before. They were both strong, and she wanted to see which would win. It really was anyone's battle at the moment.

"If you fight like this all the time, then we may very well be partners in crime."

Suddenly, there was a small blip on her radar. Another Zoid had approached, and its pilot was now watching the battle. Devi had to make sure no one stopped the battle until it was over, and it seemed far from over. Unless that Net Gun made contact with the Jerk. Then Ryo would have a huge upper hand. She put her hands back on the controls, and Shield Liger began running towards the blip. At 250 km/hr. Devi wasn't planning on doing anything other than checking to see who was there, but she would fight if someone tried to get in the way of the current battle.

"I'll be right back fellas, don't end the battle without me!"

Ven grinned in elation, knowing he had least struck twice. Pretty good for someone who had only been trying to frighten the Fox into a certain direction. If the question arose as to completely destroying another's zoid, Ven would never do it. He knew that if it ever happened to him, he would be swept up in a conflicting storm of rage and pure anguish. If Ryo were to destroy his Jerk, there'd be no way in hell that Ven would even consider being on his team. Unless of course, Ryo managed to pull out some serious cash and make the Jerk just like new...but maybe not even then. Concerned, the man leaned over just as the Shadow Fox shot underneath the Jerk. That was bad. It wasn't like it could go backwards. Something suddely seemed to fly up in the air, and the man's eyes went wide.

"Oh shi--"

The net entangled around one of the wings, just as electricity screamed through the systems. Ven's startled exclamation was lost as the fat bolts of lightning crackled through the Jerk's control system. With a keening wail, the zoid simply dropped out of the sky. Five hundred feet in the air. Flying was fun--falling, not so much. His hands were white as he gripped the controls, desperately trying to save both himself, and his zoid. If he couldn't angle it up, he'd be killed by the impact. It wasn't like he wore a helmet or anything. The controls vibrated viciously under his hands, showing that the control system was frozen. Ven ignored the sweat trickling down his face, forcing his breathing to remain calm. Getting panicked wouldn't do anything for him--not now.

Suddenly, miraculously, the Jerk pulled out of its death drop, managing to pull its body so it wasn't the cockpit that would hit first. The zoid slammed to the ground with a sickening thud, skidding for miles as it ripped a long, crater-like trail through the plains. Ven had been rendered helpless with shock for a moment, simply slumped in the seat as his mind whirrled. s**t! The Jerk! All but scrambling for the controls, the man hesitantly shifted one lever down. The bird was simply trembling, getting to its feet with a jerking, stuttering pace. Ven bit his lip, feeling emotion well up inside him. After all that, and it was still able to move...a miracle. That was when he saw one wing, hanging limp at its side. The left one was no longer functioning.

All humor had gone from him now, and Ven flipped open a switch, pressing the button with his thumb. C'mon. He prayed silently. Please... The tail shuddered violently, extending with pathetic jerks until it was fully open. The Fox was probably charging towards him, and Ven didn't care. He would lose--but he wasn't going to do so without a fight. The com-link was reestablished, revealing the man's tired, gaunt features. "Parakulyzer." Was all he said before the link blipped out. In response, sound waves began to radiate from those tail feathers, filling the expanse of the plain. A thought occured to him, after he had done this of course. What about those other zoids in the clearing? Flipping the com-link back open, he addressed Devi in a concerned, slightly panicked tone. "Devi, get out of here!" Oh, so he could remember her name in crisis. "Or at least get away from any cliffs!"

There wouldn't be a chance for him to try and get over to the Fox, but, if he was lucky, the Jerk could pathetically waddle over. Unless the limp wing rendered it off-balance.
