He remembered the work expected of trainees. It was tiring, horribly so, and generally went on longer than the sunlight. For the sake of allowing Alba some peace and quiet, Lucas had taken his guitar practice out of the room, finding a relatively out-of-the way corridor warmed by the mercy of a few windows and seating himself against the wall with the instrument in his lap. Merry was curled up atop a small stack of tabs at her human's side as though she were a living paperweight, and a Charmander kept himself out of trouble by gazing through the nearest window. The two listened, lulled into a dreamlike state by the music that surrounded them. Lucas had become quite skilled with the guitar since he had first purchased one on arriving in Kodo, and he was far from perfection, he played with a true love for the art. Finishing his current recital, he tugged a new piece from the pile Merry inadvertently guarded and began anew.

Fortunately for Claire, she'd gotten past the trainee work months ago in an entirely different base, and very much preferred grunt work over trainee. Of course, she wished that grunts had more than just a shred of respect more than the trainees, but that couldn't be helped.
Her thoughts wandered as she walked down the hall, a nervous Pikachu perched on her right shoulder. He had no idea when she would tie him to the dreaded torture machine of doom treadmill again, but he knew that if he misbehaved again, that is exactly where he would end up, with no chocolate for the rest of his life. That thought alone, backed up by the assurance that his trainer would indeed enforce such a strict punishment, forced him back into his normal behavior. At least, for the time being.
Claire paused mid-step, her mind suddenly emptying as the subtle sound of music filtered through the air. Violet eyes flitted curiously in a few directions, to see if she could easily spot the source of the beautiful sound, but she couldn't. She hesitated a moment before turning and walking down another hall, following the music. She heard it pause - a rustle of paper - and then it started again as its owner changed to a different song.
She stopped and carefully peered around a corner, spotting the man sitting on the floor in the hall. Had her thoughts not been completely obstructed, shoved to the ground and thoroughly beaten to death by the only thing that could truly distract her, she would have inwardly cursed herself for spying on someone around a corner, or for being so air-headed as to wander around to find the source of some noise, or--
"Chuu?" Zeus had never heard something like that before! Thoroughly intrigued by the sound, the chubby Pikachu hopped off Claire's shoulder and landed with a plop before bounding over to Lucas. "O-oh!" Claire gasped lightly before putting her right hand over her mouth. Zeus' reaction was completely unexpected, and in her currently distracted state, had taken her by surprise. The Pikachu plopped himself down on his behind near the man, staring perplexedly at the instrument he held in his lap. "P'ka?" What was that thing, and how did it make sounds like that?

"Hm?" Lucas's hands paused when he noticed the Pikachu approach him and seat itself. It had an interesting coloration, he observed. He resumed his song when he became aware of the interested way in which it stared at his guitar. "Hey there, buddy. You like music?"
The Charmander, at his human's voice, turned and noticed the Pikachu. His large eyes wandered further down the hall until he spotted the indication of a woman just around the corner. "Char!" He dropped to all fours and started towards her, excited at the opportunity to meet more humans.
"Snow, stay put," Lucas commanded, the warmth with which he addressed the Pikachu gone from his voice. The addressed froze in place, seating itself and casting a sad glance over its shoulder. He turned back towards the woman with a wistful expression. Why was his trainer always so stern...?

It seemed as if the music-induced cloud that fogged up her mind had suddenly lifted unexpectedly, and all sorts of thoughts invaded her head all at once. It was rude to spy on people (but what did that matter?), it was ridiculous for her to be standing there spying on someone playing an instrument (even if they were playing it beautifully), she should probably..
Ah, she'd been spotted by.. A Charmander? Hmm, she hadn't seen one of those in quite some time. It was a cute little thing, though, and obedient.
Zeus continued to sit near Lucas, ignoring his command to the fire-type, and his ears twitched a bit. "Chuu-uuu! Pika!" He flailed his arms a bit as he replied, as if waving his arms around would aid in relaying what he had to say so that Lucas would understand him.
Claire sighed quietly. She didn't have much of an interest in waltzing up to a stranger and admit to spying on him, but she couldn't leave her Pikachu there, either, so after another moment's hesitation, she came out from behind the corner and slowly approached the man on the floor. "Ah - sorry about Zeus, I guess he's never seen a guitar before.. My name's Claire, by the way. What's yours?" Violet eyes couldn't help but flit to the Chimecho on the stack of papers, and then back to Snow the Charmander. Hmm, she would need to get herself a fire-type eventually...

Lucas laughed as the Pikachu waved its little arms. "Right, right," he agreed, completely unsure of what it was talking about but amused nonetheless. He looked up when he heard the sound of nearing footsteps and smiled in greeting. "No need to apologize. Energetic little guy, this one." Her human's voice woke Merry, and she was at his shoulder in an instant, deeply distraught that she had allowed her charged to be approached by an unknown pokemon and human without her knowledge. Lucas tilted his head toward her slightly to assure her that all was well. "Name's Lucas. A pleasure to- Snow!"
The Charmander had crept over to Claire to sniff at her boot, and he flinched at sudden shout. He turned and retreated back to his previous post beside the window.

Zeus ignored the two pokemon, still staring at Lucas and the guitar. He even tried to lean forward in an attempt to sniff it, but it was too much effort and so he sat back, ears twitching again. When was he going to make it make sounds again?
"Nice to meet you too, Lucas," she replied, noting the odd markings on the Chimecho before smiling down at the Charmander. Thankfully she was wearing her casual clothes, which included pants instead of her typical skirt, so the fact that a pokemon could effectively stare directly up wasn't an issue today. "And don't worry about it." The Charmander didn't seem to be anything except curious, so the young woman knelt down on the floor to be at a closer eye-level to the fire-type. Plus Lucas was sitting on the floor, and she didn't want to be rude and remain standing above him. It would feel too... odd.
"Hello there little guy," she said with a smile, and reached out her hand to pet the Charmander. Arceus, she really needed to get herself a fire-type sometime...

Noting the Pikachu's expectant expression, Lucas began to strum idly at the guitar. He eyed Snow warily, the Charmander returning the gaze with his own doleful rendition, before returning his attention to the guitar and the tabs he had laid out in front of himself.
Snow perked up at the offered hand, moving over to the woman and nuzzling his snout into her palm with a happy little "char!" His flaming tail waved back and forth amiably, but Lucas continued to regard him with suspicion out of the corner of his eye. "Don't trouble her, Snow," he warned.

Emerald eyes widened to the size of cupcakes as Lucas began to play the guitar, and the awestruck Pikachu jumped up and leaned on the man to stare at the guitar more closely, just a few inches from it. How did it do that?! The mystery of the noisy thing was very mysterious.
"Zeus, down," Claire chided, giving the pokemon a reproachful look. He returned the look with his own of displeasure at her interrupting him, and sat back on the floor with a flop and a pout. He stopped pouting after a few seconds though, and went right back to watching Lucas eagerly.
Once her Pikachu behaved, the young woman relented and began to pet the Charmander with her good hand, still not having use of her left yet. Soon, hopefully, but not quite yet. "Are you a little trouble-maker too, Snow?" She asked, though the question was directed at the Charmander and his owner, as obviously pokemon couldn't talk. "Zeus is a trouble-maker, too." She gave the pokemon another of her looks, which he completely ignored, much too interested in the thing Lucas held and how it made noise. Every fiber of his being quivered with the desire to paw at the thing - is that how the noise came out? Maybe if he could play with it, he could make sounds, too!

Snow started to shake his head 'no,' then stopped and looked back at his human in mild confusion. He wasn't a trouble-maker, right? He was a good boy, right?
Lucas's brow furrowed in thought. "He's not-- I mean..." Why was that such a hard question to answer? Fortunately Zeus provided for a convenient change of topic. "You wanna give it a try, pal?" Lucas offered, removing his hand from the strings and shifting the guitar so the Pikachu could reach. "Just be careful not to scratch it, all right?"
Snow's tail drooped slightly. It didn't seem as though he would be getting any praise...

If it was even possible, the eager Pikachu's eyes widened even more. He was... going to let him try it?! He stared up at Lucas, his expression one of absolute disbelief - as if he'd suddenly laugh in the pokemon's face and whisk the magical thing with strings away.
He nodded obediently as the human mentioned not to scratch it - he could at least interpret that much - and his paw hovered over the strings nervously and he held his breath. Ever so slowly his paw descended until it was touching the magical strings on the magical thing, and with one digit he carefully tugged at a string. He nearly jumped a mile when it made a noise, but the look on his face turned to sheer enthusiasm when he realized he made it make noise. He could die happy.
Claire made an amused noise as her Pikachu set about to make the most horrible sounds she'd ever heard come from a guitar, but he was happy - and not causing any damage, which was the most important thing. She patted the Charmander on the head and lowered her voice to a whisper. "I think you're being very good." At least, she hadn't seen the pokemon misbehave yet, despite being chastised once or twice by her trainer for simply being (overly) curious, but that wasn't too much of an issue in her opinion.

Lucas couldn't help but laugh at Zeus's reaction. He watched in sheer amusement as the Pikachu plucked away. "Bet you could be a regular Jimi Hendrix if you practiced enough," he encouraged. Not that expected the pokemon to know who Jimi Hendrix was, but hey, it was a nice sentiment at least.
Snow wiggled his tail happily, a bright smile on his face. He hadn't been expecting the approval, but it was certainly a pleasant surprise.
The waving flame of the Charmander's tail caught Lucas's eye, and though the smile faltered for a moment, he said nothing.

Zeus paused to put one paw on his hip, the other waving dramatically at Lucas, and looking as if he were some famous musician who just accepted some prestigious award and was waving dismissively at all the 'little people' he stepped on. Pose done with, he went back to work making the most ear-damaging noise Claire had ever heard.
The woman simply shook her head with a sigh, a small smile on her lips. "Oh, Arceus, what did you do? You never should've let him play it. Zeus, enough," she said, rubbing one temple. It was giving her a headache.
The Pikachu stopped and looked at his trainer, aghast. How could she ruin his moment? His time with the magical thing that made noise?! He was amazing at it! However, he huffed, ears flicking back before he plopped on the floor and folded his arms over his chubby belly.
Claire shook her head again before patting Snow once more. "We'll find something else for you to play with later." Like that game some people played with guitars and stuff - Guitar Hero, was it? Sounded like it. Well, maybe he'd be amused by that if she could find it somewhere on the premises. "How many pokemon do you have, if you don't mind my asking?" She asked as she plopped herself onto the floor - sitting cross-legged was a harder task to accomplish one-handed - and patted Snow on the head again absently.

"Aha, sorry..." Lucas offered an apologetic wave of his hand at Zeus before returning the guitar to his lap. "Gotta admire his enthusiasm, though, right?" A guitar-playing Pikachu would probably hit it big in no time flat, he considered idly as he leaned forward slightly to glance at his tabs. The tiny little paws would probably be a huge hindrance in learning to play, though...
"Just these two," he said, nodding towards the Chimecho on his shoulder. "Merry was assigned to me when I joined in. She's been with me for, jeez... almost thirty years." A quiet jingle from Lucas's shoulder affirmed his estimate. "Snow's a recent addition." The Charmander, who had taken up a place beside Claire to maximize the pettings, blinked at mention of his name.

Claire made an amused 'hmn' noise. "Yes, I just wish he had the same enthusiasm for his training or missions. The only enthusiasm he has for those stems from the fact he knows he'll be rewarded afterward." Without chocolate to reward him, training was almost like pulling teeth.
"I only have two, as well," she commented, violet eyes turning down to Snow as he moved to an optimum position for petting, and happily obliged, even going so far as to lightly scratch the back of his neck and shoulders as well. "Zeus, and a Pidgeot named Odette." Her brows furrowed in thought at his next statement, however. "Assigned when you joined?" Thirty years? He was... He couldn't be an elite or anything, right? No, she swore he was the same rank as she... But, thirty years...? She peered at him again, a confused look on her face. "Were you in Team Rocket thirty years ago..?" No, he couldn't have... He'd surely be of a much higher rank by this point, and if he was there was no way she wouldn't know about him and there was no way she'd be talking to him at the moment.

"Is that the only reason?" He turned to the Pikachu in mock surprise. "Come on, guy, your trainer's counting on you! You don't wanna get stronger for her sake?" It was a motivational speech given in jest, though, and he hardly expected the pokemon to take it seriously.
Lucas nodded as Claire named her pokemon, absently repeating the same phrase on his guitar in an effort to minimize errors. He hit a terribly sour note as his company's question called to light the horrible error he had made. He fumbled with a recovery, "Ah, well, I mean--" s**t. "...Yes?" Nice save, Lucas.
