One in every four american citizens associate the word "Islam' or "Muslim" with something negative. It's understandable, considering recent events, but should a religion be judged by what members of that religion do? Islam is a peaceful religion, and just because there are extremists of that religion doesn;t mean the religion and the followers of that religion should be condemned.

First of all, I'd like the source of that statistic. Second of all, words change depending on useage. That's how any language works. People right now associate Islam with terrorism, the same way they associate "negro" to racism. The word negro doesn't imply racism on its own, however, it's been suggested as such. Same goes for Islam.
I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying it's true.

I wouldn't be surprised if that statistic had its grain of truth, but I'm always weary of suck statistics. How the data was taken is very important.

i agree with what everyone said above. Son of Axeman, i'd even point out a more extreme example: ******. ****** is LATIN for black. pronounced differently, but then no one really knows not Latin was pronouned in the Roman Empire days anyway. but now it's considered a racial slur.

That's kind of surprising, I thought it was more than that. Its terrible that people call an entire religion bad just because of the actions of a few members.

My best friend from elementary school to hs was Muslim. She was physically abused by her father and the whole family was troubled. I know well enough thats not every Muslim family, and doesnt have anything to do with religion(but there is more stuff just too much to type). They were very religious but that doesn't make them good Muslims. Its the same as any religion, you have good followers and bad ones.

>_<;; Recent events with the riots breaking out really aren't helping the world's view on this religion either.
Personally, I think every religion is a good one, theoretically. Its like communism, idealy it would work, but in actual practice, people mess it up. Just like they do with every religion.
^_^ Fortunately though, we have good people in each religion as we do the bad. And its the good people that make any religion worth looking into.

Today in speech class someone gave a speech about how Islam is a threat to Christianity. He spoke of it as if the idea of Islam is the enemy, and that all Muslims should be converted. He didn't really talk about terrorism or anything, and terrorism or no terrorism I think he would have given the same speech.

My friend L is a Muslim. She said that the Muslim terrorists were wrong, and that they didn't do anything for Allah, but who they were working for. Christians are guilty of such things, as I'm sure many other religions are. (Sorry for the Crusades, they sucked) My friend R had to face this prejudice despite the fact that she is half-white, and her Arabic father is a Christian. You know what? Racism is the suck, in fact, I punch racism in the face. I love the Muslims I know: L, H, Y... they is cool.

This association of the words "Islam" or "Muslim" with terrorism stems from the fact that not too many people are studied in religions other then their own. All they've heard about the Islamic religion is the reports of the terrors extremists have committed. This is all they know about the religion, so they automatically associate the word with everything they've heard. If they would study the religion and learn about the majority of Muslims or non-extremist values and ideas, their opinions and associations would probably change. But most people would probably say they don't have the time for this. But there is always time to change.

Natures_Aphid Islam is a peaceful religion, and just because there are extremists of that religion doesn;t mean the religion and the followers of that religion should be condemned. Exactly. I mean, look at modern Christianity in America rolleyes
As for me, I don't associate any negativity to Islam except for those who take the extremist view - it's all based on the person, after all. Oh, the other day, the head of my campus's Muslim Student Association gave me a free hardcover copy of the Koran blaugh Muchos Coolness!!! heart

I have a muslim friend who honestly believes that any Islamic terrorist has denounced their religion by being violent and are thus no longer muslim.
For me, I associate bigotry with negativity.
