It was cold. His ears were cold. His nose was cold. One of his fingers, poking out of the tip of one glove, was also cold. Ever just thanked his lucky stars he wasn't hungry too.
It had gotten into his head that a hat would essentially solve all life's problems. No matter how much things in general sucked, if his ears were warm, everything would be a little bit more manageable, and much more comfortable. The only problem was a lack of funding...but even that wasn't much of a problem, really.
The Salvation Army had good, solid, cheap clothing. They also were understaffed, and the clothing section of this particular store was winding and narrow, blocking all viewpoints from the front desk. On top of that, Ever had determined that they pretty much hated him, as most religious institutions did -- so he didn't feel bad at all about stealing, even if it was a charity.
He looked around, first, a good long look, his battered bag settled between his feet. Ever was tall enough that the ragged mess of his hair shone white over the top of a shelf, so he stooped lower to hide as he nabbed a faded black skull cap and shoved it down the front of his pants.

One bad thing about the holidays, well after the holidays, was that Chloe was out of money. She'd spent it on gifts. Mostly on herself. Okay she did spend some on friends and family but she needed to shop for the sake of shopping so where better than the Salvation Army!
Nice, cheap and find quality stuff. Alright not amazing quality but cheap. Lately she had, ah, learned a new skill from one of her friends. You don't go to St Magdalena's without learning some new skills.
For example, she didn't feel bad aquiring some items if they barely cost anything. Who'd miss some of that stuff? Those Salvation Army stores were always pilled high with clothes that one or two things going missed wouldn't be noticed.
Chloe made her way towards where the hats where. She liked hats. Especially crazy colored ones or punky ones. Turning the corner she saw some guy sticking a hat down his pants. Looks like he had the same idea! She got a little closer before talking, not to loud to draw anyone else's attention but his. "You know, that's not where you wear hats." She grinned.

For one brief moment, Ever realized he'd been caught, and 'fight or flight' kicked in: his head came up and he tensed in preparation to run, halfway stooping for his bag.
Then he realized it was just some dumb girl and relaxed, his tense expression fading out to a faint smile and one of his eyebrows twitching up in response. His tone quickly turned teasing, his head dropped as he smoothed his shirt down to make sure everything was covered. There was definitely a bulge. Maybe he could get away with it.
"What do you know? Doubt you've ever had a good long look..." He shook his head fingers wrapping around the strap of his bag, and poked his head out to see if the bored-looking woman up front had noticed anything.

Chloe just watched the guy almost flee. It was kind of funny. He looked older than her and he was trying to get away with that hat. Well, he did look cold but surely there was a better way to steal the hat or even something warmer to make off with.
He didn't leave though. She watched slightly amused as he smiled. At least she'd have some form of entertainment for the moment. Her purple eyes dropped when he smoothed his shirt but she didn't look close enough to see that bulge.
"Hm? Just trying it on then? I bet the lady at the front could help. I could get her if you want." Doubt the lady had noticed but Chloe wanted to see that hat for herself. Heck, might suit herself.

The threat got a flash of annoyance, and Ever stooped to grab the strap of his bag. He could have put the hat in there, but it had been searched the last time he'd come through here. Like they didn't trust him.
"It's a bit snug, yeah." He shot another quick look out to see if they'd been noticed, tugging his bag up onto his shoulder, and the sarcasm and teasing in his words fell a little short. Instead of putting real feeling into his snark, it came out pale and flat, maybe a little nervous.
"Why don't you go ask her if they have one in a bigger size?" And he could just duck out while the woman was occupied. His eyes flashed back onto Chloe.

She'd been to this certain thrift store a few times. Only a few because it never had a great selection to her and they loved searching bags and such. Though she wanted to take another look this time. While the other was talking she picked up a different hat, oo rainbow, and looked at it.
"Maybe, what was that hat. A small?" Chloe grinned. He was trying to get rid of her wasn't he? "Listen. How about you sneak this out for me and I'll distract the lady for you. Happy?"

Oh. Another blink, his attention snapping onto her and then the hat -- and Ever huffed out a sigh. He snatched it from her fingers and shoved that down the back of his pants, instead of the front, before arranging his shirt carefully down over it again.
If she didn't like where he'd put it, she could just suck it up.
"If you screw me over..." He didn't bother to polish out the threat. He had height and years on her; he could probably work something out. Ever raised his eyebrows meaningfully, and gestured her out.
