WHO: Lazarus and Xiu
WHEN: 8 am
WHERE: Hazeline's bookstore
WEATHER: Cold and cloudy

It was early in the morning, and Lazarus had took the earliest bus to Xiu's place so he could pass him the gift that the fire Sigel had got him. Glancing down at the white paper bag he had in his hand, he smiled giddily as he imagined what Xiu's expression would be like when he receive the gift. Would he be happy? Would he hug him? Hold his hands or...? A child like smile spread across his lips, making him look youthful, a refreshing change from his normal self.

Turning a corner, he continued to make his way towards the bookstore from the bus station when he heard something in the bushes beside the road. It was soft, like a single chirp, but the Sigel definitely heard it and paused in his tracks. Arching a curious eyebrow, his crimson eyes stared at the direction where the sound came from. It was a bush, at least... what once was a bush, now a snow covered bunch of twigs. The sound was coming from behind, perhaps under the bush, under a large tree. Curiously he approached the source, his view obscured by the snow on the bush. When he was close enough, he shook the twigs on the bush a little, causing the thin layer of snow crumbling and falling to the ground, and unfortunately onto the little creature under the bushes as well.

"s**t!" Lazarus cursed aloud as he quickly scooped the little thing up carefully, gently brushing the snow away to realized that it was... "A bird?" More like a little hatchling really, it's feathers were dark grey color, though mostly are still down feathers, with a tint of blue, and no visible markings yet. The little creature was barely conscious, but Lazarus could see that it was still breathing. Instinctively the Sigel looked up at the tree, did the little hatchling fall off from the tree? And what were these birds doing at this time of the year? Shouldn't they be somewhere warmer? Don't they migrate during winter or something?

The young hatchling gave another weak chirp as it lay helplessly in Lazarus's open palm. As the Sigel stare at the little creature, struggling to stay alive, he was suddenly overcame by a sense of duty, that the little bird's life is in his hands.

"Don't worry, I'm going to take care of you." He cooed softly as he closed his other palm gently over the bird, trying to keep it warm. But this wouldn't do, he would need something better, warmer, and water absorbent. His crimson eyes laid upon the paper bag hanging from his fore arm then. Does he have any choice...?

A long moment later, he was in front of the bookstore with a white bundle cradled in his arms. Nervously he rang the doorbell and waited for Xiu to answer.

Xiu was excited. Lazarus was coming! It had been too long since they had last met each other but…the both of them had agreed that it was for the best. After what Lazarus had done during the infection, it was probably a good idea to keep this away from Hazeline for a while. Xiu hated to admit it but…he had the suspicion that his guardian would not be too happy about it if she knew. The housekeeper certainly wouldn’t at any rate. Why, just the other day the petite old lady had snorted with disgust at a comedy about a man finding himself liking another man. It was…awkward enough being around her as it is already. There was no reason to rub more salt into it.

But today was different! The housekeeper was off for the holidays to be with her sister and Hazeline had brought Joshua over to see their parents for a couple of days. This meant that Xiu would be left alone to man (or in this case, raevan) the bookstore. Lazarus had seemed delighted at this bit of news too (Xiu had sent him a text message and after getting the reply, immediately deleted it)and had immediately offered to come over.

And today was the day. Xiu wondered what was making the Fiery Sigel so happy. Perhaps Lazarus was feeling rather lonely in the lab, he seemed that way in the past or perhaps it was because they would be exchanging gifts Or…or…

The white Sigel smiled. They would be able to finally spend some time together.

Floating over to the counter where Lazarus’ gift was wrapped in a gingerbread motif wrapping paper, Xiu picked the parcel up with a silent chuckle. He hoped the Sigel would like his Christmas gift. He had spent an entire day looking for it in those crazily crowded malls.

The clock on the wall chimed indicating that it was already eight thirty and that Lazarus would be here soon. No sooner had the white Sigel put the kettle on to boil then the bell rang. Trying his hardest not to grin, the white raevan floated down and opened the door.

“Lazarus,” mouthed the white Sigel with obvious delight. “Good to see you,”

The blue eyes then strayed to the bundle in Lazarus’ arm. Curious, Xiu tilted his head and looked from the bundle to Lazarus questioningly. Was that his…surprise then?

Lazarus smiled nervously at Xiu when he opened the door. For one, he was excited to meet Xiu, but at the same time he had something troubling in his hands as well, literally. "Hey Xiu! Can I... come in?" Being indoors, away from the cold outside would definitely do some good for the baby bird, plus he himself doesn't like cold that much either. Then... there is that one more thing...

The curious look on Xiu's face did not escaped his keen eyes though, there was perhaps even a hint of disappointment in them. Lazarus had learned to read Xiu's expressions since the white Sigel couldn't communicate with words, and he is getting pretty good at it. The fire Sigel felt a little guilty as he did not intended the surprise to be this way, but sometimes.. things just pop up unexpectedly and he couldn't really help it.

When he was indoors and Xiu shut the front door, a weak chirp could be heard from the bundle again. Gasping softly in surprise, he placed a warm hand over the top of the white bundle, which looked like a messy wrapping of a crocheted cloth. Making a wary expression, he looked at Xiu almost apologetically as he waited for Xiu to lead him upstairs. Perhaps he could set this on a counter or something, then he could explain the situation to Xiu. Inwardly, he felt horrible for ruining the Christmas morning like this. It was supposed to be a nice day where they could relax and spend time with each other. He even rented a movie DVD, a romance movie for them to enjoy. Rarely could he visit Xiu at the bookstore because the housekeeper was always around, and according to Xiu, she didn't like Raevans very much. The last time he entered the bookstore was that time when he came to apologize to Hazeline actually.

But here he is, acting all awkward and perhaps even letting down Xiu's expectations. He don't even know how to begin to explain his situation.

Xiu nodded at Lazarus’ request and floated back to allow the other in before shutting the wooden door. Lazarus looked flustered and excited at the same time. Xiu wondered what could have made Lazarus this way.

The sudden soft chirp that came from within the bundle surprised the Sigel and Xiu found his curiosity once again aroused as Lazarus placed a protective hand over it. Just what was it that the fiery raevan was hiding from him?

Lazarus? mouth the white Sigel questioningly as his gaze shifted from the bundle to Lazarus’ crimson eyes. What is that?

It was then that the kettle Xiu had set decided to boil. Momentarily distracted from the chirping bundle, Xiu took Lazarus’ arm and indicated that they should head upstairs where it was warmer and cozier. There were also some ginger biscuits and buns should Lazarus feel like having a snack.

While for lunch …

Xiu hoped Lazarus would like what he had prepared. Well…perhaps not really prepared…more like merely heating up the food but…it was the thought that counts, right?

Lazarus lets out a quiet, relieved sigh when the kettle went off, thankful for the distraction. Following behind Xiu quietly, they went up to the kitchen upstairs. Carefully he settled the white bundle on the clean counter as Xiu went off to get the boiling kettle. The fire Sigel took note of the ginger biscuits and buns laid beside the counter, but left them be as he doesn't fancy food stuff like that.

The little birdie had stopped chirping by now. Oh boy, he sure hope it is still alive. Lifting the bundle up a little, he was glad to find that the birdie was still breathing, although it's condition still did not improve very much.

When he looked up again, Xiu was looking at him curiously, quite apparent that he saw him peeking into the bundle. Oops, perhaps this is a good time to do some explaining?

Biting his lower lip and frowning slightly, he lifted the flap and shows Xiu what was hidden in it. "I... found it when I was on my way here. It probably fell off it's nest and landed on the snow. It was still alive, and I couldn't just leave it there..." He explained, although that was not the reason why he felt so bad and awkward about it. Crimson eyes glanced warily at the bundle once more, this time however, he wasn't looking directly at the little bird... but more at the bundle itself.

The white bundle was actually a crocheted scarf that Lazarus had gotten for Xiu as his Christmas gift. It was thick, warm and upon closer inspection, intricately designed. He thought that Xiu would look good in it. But he had ruined it, using it to keep the little hatchling warm. He only wore his pea coat and a turtleneck sweater underneath, he don't have anything else to use to keep the bird dry and warm at the time. "I actually got you a nice scarf..." Lazarus noted at the white bundle as he explained. "I'm sorry I ruined it..." He looked apologetic as he spoke. This was totally not the type of scenario that he had hoped for at all. Earlier that morning, he had imagined how he would wrap the scarf around Xiu, watching him smile brightly at him, and maybe even give him a hug. It seemed quite unlikely that the scenario will happen now.

Blue eyes trailed from Lazarus’ apologetic face to that of the little bird nestling quietly in the scarf Lazarus had bought him. It did not help that the baby bird chose at that moment to defecate on the clean white scarf and looking perfectly content to do so now that it was warm and dry. Letting out a soft chirp of contentment, the little one tucked a head under its stubby little wing and was soon asleep in the pseudo nest made from the scarf.

The sight made the white Sigel laugh. The expression of Lazarus’ face as though he had done something simply terrible by saving a life was both rather cute and amusing. It became especially amusing when the Fiery Sigel saw what the nestling had done. Reaching over the counter, Xiu patted Lazarus’ shoulder comfortingly before pulling the scarf over the tiny bird once more. It was best to let the little one rest until it was well again. Perhaps when the snow thawed they’d figure something up then.

Help me find a box. We’ll make it another nest to rest in wrote Xiu quickly as he floated around the counter and gave Lazarus a shy hug. Don’t feel bad. I would rather you save the bird than keeping the scarf clean. I’ll wash it and wear it the next time we meet on a cold day alright?

Red eyes grew wide and mouth slightly agape in shock as the fire Sigel watched the little hatchling poop on the pristine white scarf, shattering all hopes of seeing Xiu in it today. Obviously the shocked expression on his face was amusing to Xiu as he laughed silently. A rosy glow crept onto Lazarus's face as he blushed from embarrassment, shutting his mouth quickly.

However, the shy hug made him feel a lot better as he read Xiu's words as well. Perhaps he did the right thing after all for saving the little bird's life, he is quite sure that Xiu would be unhappy if he left the bird to die in the cold. Although he could only see Xiu wear the scarf another day, at least this meant that they will meet again very soon, and that thought made him very happy.

"Alright." He replied as he smiled shyly. "Maybe we could go to the ice sculpture exhibition in the park in Durem next week?" That exhibition would be outdoors, so there will be plenty of frost. Although he did not really liked the idea of being out during winter for a prolonged period of time, but with Xiu by his side, he wouldn't mind the cold so much.

As for the box though... Lazarus looked around the kitchen and the living room area for some unused box. But as far as he can see, there weren't any empty boxes laying around. There was however an empty basket under the kitchen counter, not too big, but not too small either, just right as a bird's nest size. Bending down, he took the basket up and showed it to Xiu. "Would this do?" He inquired curiously, not sure what the basket was once used for. Maybe it was just left there to dry after cleaning or something. But if they could use it... "Maybe we could add some warm cloth or paper shreds to layer it, and use a hand towel or handkerchief as blanket..." He is not sure how do birds survive in the wild in such chilly weather, but as someone who had human knowledge, a blanket is the only way he could think of to keep the little bird warm without suffocating it.

Xiu nodded. The ice sculpture exhibition sounded fun. He’d seen pictures of such exhibitions in magazines. Hopefully the snow would still be around by then as it would give him a reason to wear Lazarus’ gift. Tilting his head a little, Xiu watched as Lazarus explored the kitchen. The housekeeper had recently cleaned the place up so Xiu was doubtful that Lazarus would fine anything of use here.

His doubt in the fiery Sigel was wrongly placed as no sooner had the white raevan thought about it Lazarus had spotted an empty basket under the kitchen counter. Xiu had never seen this basket before. It was a woven rattan basket, rather small, like the kind people will use to throw their car keys or perhaps clothes pegs into it. Perhaps in the past it was used as such but with the dryer installed, the poor thing had probably lost its purpose.

Floating over, Xiu nodded. Yes, this basket would work well. Pulling open a drawer, Xiu pulled out a few pieces of loose tissues Hazeline had thrown in. It was the kind you obtained when ordering a takeaway but never found the need to use it. Not wanting to waste them, Hazeline had simply tossed them into this drawer just in case they were needed in the future. Passing the tissues over to Lazarus, Xiu pursed his lips. The tissues were probably not enough for the little bird. It needed something a little more insulating to keep it warm. Snapping his fingers as an idea entered his head, Xiu floated over to Hazeline’s room and emerged later with a roll of facial cotton. Pulling out a couple of tuffs, Xiu hoped that his guardian would not notice their absence.

“Try this,” mouthed the Sigel offering the cottony white tuffs over. “It should work.”

Meanwhile, the nestling continued to doze, unaware of the makeshift nest what was being constructed right beside it.

"These should do." Lazarus smiled warmly as he accepted the tissue paper and the facial cotton gratefully. Feeling a little more daring, he leans in and peck on Xiu's cheek briefly before starting to put the tissue paper in the basket, a blush gracing his cheek.

Unfolding and refolding the tissue paper, he arranged them neatly and layered them up around the little basket. A few pieces he unfolded and crumpled into a loose messy ball to add softness in the middle of the make shift nest. When he was done with the tissue paper, he begin padding the basket firmly with the facial cotton. "This looks cozy." He smiled as he make a dent in shape in the middle of the cotton. "Now to move the little guy... or girl..." Chuckling shyly, he glanced at Xiu for a moment before gently lifting the little nestling from the thick scarf. The fire Sigel gently patted the bird as it slept before putting him in the middle of the make shift nest.

"We're almost done, now for a blanket of sorts to keep it warm in the cold weather." Glancing around the kitchen, he was hoping he could find a thick handkerchief or something. He had already used up all the tissue paper and the cotton really don't look suitable as a blanket. Failing to find anything of use, he turned to look at Xiu expectantly. Surely he would know where to get something to cover the nestling?

Xiu blushed when Lazarus leaned over to give him a quick peck on the cheek. The kiss was as sweet as it was sudden and the sheepish look that accompanied the Sigel after the kiss was also very endearing to the white sigel. Xiu would have returned the kiss then and there if Lazarus hadn’t suddenly popped the suggestion that they find something else to keep the nestling warm. Pursing his lips thoughtfully, Xiu gave the kitchen a scrutinizing glance. What else was there that could be used as a blanket?

Think, think… got it!

Snapping his fingers, Xiu floated down to the bookstore and unhooked one of the many woolen Christmas stockings that hung around the shelves as decorations for the season. This should suffice. Maybe they could slip the little hatchling into it or something; like a sleeping bag.

But the young hatching would hear nothing of it. Puffing out its scruffy chest as it was handled for what felt like the umpteenth time that day, the bedraggled looking nestling began cheeping and screeching with all its might. It was due a feeding! It was due some pampering! It was not to be manhandled!!

Xiu watched the protesting bird with a mixture of surprise, curiousity and worry. Why the sudden cheeping? How could such a small thing like that produce such a loud noise? And…was it normal for a hatchling to be rolling about in the palm of Lazarus’ hand like that?

If the fire Sigel knew earlier that the kiss might be returned, he wouldn't have had spoken at that very moment. But alas the chance had passed as the question slipped his mouth. Smiling softly, he watched Xiu retreat downstairs to look for a suitable cover as he temporarily watch over the bird.

Lazarus was just gently stroking the hatchling with a finger when it suddenly began to protest. Eyes went wide with surprise, he looked at the little bird confusingly, not knowing what to do. When Xiu returned, his crimson eyes looked up with a mixture of guilt. "I... I don't know what happened, it just started chirping like that!" He don't know why, but he felt like he was at fault for waking the bird up. But fact is... he wasn't expecting the bird to wake up at all, he looked so weak... and wasn't animals supposed to be hibernating in winter?

"Do you think he's hungry or something?" Lazarus inquired, trying to sooth the birdie down with his finger stroking it's tummy, the baby down feathers are so soft there. The hatchling's beak were wide open as it chirped loudly. "What should we feed it?" Then he remembered from the animal documentary shows that he saw before, mother birds bringing insects or seeds to feed their young. Fruits too, but birds don't have teeth, how do they bite in? He seemed to remember that their parents kept the crushed fruit in their beaks before feeding to their young. Brows frowned at that thought, he is definitely not doing that. "Do you have some... seed or something to feed it?"
PostPosted: Sat May 28, 2011 5:30 pm

The nestling continued to make a fuss as Lazarus tried ineffectively to calm it down. Perhaps the firey Sigel was right. The baby bird certainly had a hungry look about it. But this was a bookstore and not a petshop. The housekeeper might have some sesame and poppy seeds stored for baking purposes but the white Sigel doubted that the young bird would like it very much. It was then that Xiu remembered about the half eaten loaf of bread in the fridge. It was a couple of days old and going stale. Perhaps…they could try feeding the baby bird that instead?

Taking the loaf out of the fridge and setting it beside Lazarus, Xiu then went to the dish rack and filled a saucer with warm water. The bread could be dipped in the warm water to soften it before feeding it to the bird.

The young bird was now opening its beak expectantly and attempting to peck any fingers that drew near. Tearing off a small piece of bread, Xiu gingerly dipped the bread into the water and offered it to the hatchling. The young bird made a couple of furious stabs at it but did not swallow; its face now covered with soggy bread. Confused, Xiu offered the bread again and similar results were obtained. The white Sigel frowned. What was wrong with this nestling?

Lazarus's brows furrowed as Xiu brought out the bread from the fridge. Bread that needs to be kept in the fridge are old bread isn't it? But he just watched quietly as Xiu soaked the bread in water to feed the nestling, making a few faces as the bird pecked at his hand. Then comes the moment of truth as Xiu offered the wet bread to the bird, but instead of eating it, it almost look like the bird is playing with the bread.

"Is he really hungry?" He wondered out loud. Although not really eating, the little bird seems more contented and is making less noise now. Still, best to make the bird eat something. The fire Sigel thought as he gently wipe some of the soggy bread bits off the nestling's face. Crimson eyes stared at the bread, then at the warm water in the dish. "Maybe the water is not warm enough? Or you're dipping too much water onto the bread, it's too wet." Those are the only problems he could think of as he watched the nestling peck uselessly at the bread once more.

"Here, let me try it..." Lazarus offered as he took the piece of bread from Xiu's fingers, their hands grazed against each other in the process. His fingers are warmer, maybe the nestling will like it? Dipping the dry tip with a little bit of water, he hold it out for the little bird to eat.
PostPosted: Wed Jul 27, 2011 8:24 pm

Xiu was as puzzled as Lazarus when the nestling refused the bread offered to it. This was starting to get rather perplexing and not to mention annoying. Letting the Fire Sigel take over, Xiu watched as Lazarus gave the feeding a try.

The nestling gave the piece of bread in Lazarus’ hand a rebellious look before taking the opportunity to peck at Lazarus’ thumb instead. Now that the cold was starting to wear out of it, the nestling was feeling a lot more lively and rascally. Flapping its stubby wings, the pudgy little bird rolled about Lazarus’ palm while its beady little eyes took in its surroundings. It was…different from what it was used to but…as long as it was warm and provided round the clock attention, the little hatchling did not mind. Pecking at the piece of bread, the hatchling continued to make a mess of itself on Lazarus’ palm before letting out another white coloured piece of poop.

Xiu could not keep a straight face on despite Lazarus’ expression of agony. It was…so funny! And almost as though Lazarus was being bullied by the small ball of feathers in his hand. Mind you, the little rascal probably had him by the string as well but for the moment, Xiu delighted in watching Lazarus try to handle the cheeping little thing, its insistent chirping bringing noise to the rather empty house.

It was getting a little frustrating as the nestling does not seem to respond to his own feeding too. Leaving bread crumbs on his palm and rolling around, making itself and the Sigel's hand dirty.

Then without warning, it pooped itself again, on Lazarus's hand! Red eyes widen and stare in disbelief at the little wet white puddle of fowl excrement on his open palm, while the little birdie continued to chirp noisily. "That's it!" The fire Sigel exclaimed, lifting the nestling gently with two fingers and settling it back into the makeshift nest. "It can starve for all I care!" If he had legs, he would have stormed off loudly, but he would settle with darting for now. Extending his stained palm under the soap dispenser, he turned on the water tap and begin to scrub his hands clean, leaving the bird to Xiu's care instead now.

It was hard to believe that less than fifteen minutes ago, this little nestling was on the verge of dying. And now it is lively as ever, chirping loudly from it's makeshift basket nest. Maybe the warmth did make a great difference after all. Hazeline probably had the heater turned on to keep the place warm.
