User Image Dubhe didn't have another training session for a few days, and he wasn't sure he could wait that long. For one, he was really excited to see what they'd get to do next. Maybe he'd get to kill a deer all by himself! He was totally sure that he was capable of that feat -- he was, after all, the best hunter Aves had ever seen, not that anybody knew that just yet -- but he wasn't sure Jove would let him. Safety, precautions, practice, blah blah blah.

Well, whatever. He'd just go out and do it by himself, then!

Wouldn't they all be surprised? He was quite sure they would be. And pleased! Oh his parents would be so proud!

...Not that he cared what they thought, anyway.

So with that in mind, the violet-eyed pup made his way out toward the herds, tail wagging slowly behind him.

Majime was, once again, off by herself. She hummed a little as she shifted some pebbles around in the tall grass, examining them to see if she could find anything interesting. She saw that some were different colors and other appeared to be made out of different types of rock. Very interesting indeed. She'd wandered off a little ways from the home dens even though she wasn't supposed to. She often got distracted and wandered off without meaning too. She was a little surprised though when she saw another pup coming towards her. She thought he looked familiar, and that they might be related. She gives her tail a little wag and gets up to say something before she becomes distracted again by the pebbles at her feet. She looks down at them, her fluffy little white and black striped tail waving like a flag above the grass. She really should pay attention better to things, but she just couldn't help it. She wanted to know as much as possible and she figured observing things helped.

Aw, man. What was that girl doing hanging around? He couldn't go out and hunt with some girl watching. What if she tried to interfere, and got hurt? Then he'd get in trouble and they might never let him out to go hunt by himself again! ...well, not that they were really letting him now. But that was beside the point.

He paused for a moment, debating between confronting her and telling her to get lost (which seemed like a sensible plan, but might cause her to run off and tattle), and sneaking past her and going ahead with his original plan (which seemed like a much better idea but wouldn't work if she saw him).

Finally, after a moment's hesitation, the dusty brown and grey pup lowered himself to his belly and crept forward, trying to blend in with the meager grass as he tried to get past her.

The rustling of the grass attracted Majime's attention again. Her head popped up and she looked around curiously. She spotted the same pup crawling through the grass on his belly and she couldn't help but chuckle since it looked sort of funny. "Hello there, what are you doing?" She asks and stands up and shakes herself. For the moment, the rocks were forgotten as she took a step forward and tilted her head to the side. From the way he was crawling, he seemed like he was trying to be sneaky. She wondered what he was going to do, but she didn't ask just yet.

Curses! She caught him. Must practice sneaking, he thought. It was HARD, though.

Sighing, defeated for now, he rose up to all fours and regarded her rather coolly. "Nothing," he said, with perhaps more defensiveness than the situation warranted. It wasn't any of her business anyway, after all. "What are you doing?"

"Looking at these pebbles." The young pup says with a blink. She felt his hostility and she couldn't help but squirm a little. Had she done something wrong? She shrugged then and pushed out one brightly colored rock for him to see. Then she forgot all about him being mad at her and instead smiled some at her find.

Looking at rocks? What was the point in that? Rocks didn't move....they didn't do much of anything except sit around. And who cared if they were pretty? Psh. Dubhe didn't have any use for pretty things. That was what girls did.

Well, she was a girl. But still.

"Oh." He said, and his nose wrinkled. "Well, I was going that way," he said, nodding his head toward the general direction of the herds. He puffed out his chest and looked self-important. "To practice hunting. I bet you don't hunt."

Majime blinks again and looks down at the rock, then back at him. She was pretty good at sensing others emotions even if she couldn't understand them very well. She fluffed her own fur up in response. "Nobody's taught me how to hunt yet." She says with a shrug and stands up and arches her back. "You look excited though, so it must be interesting." She says and looks at the direction he'd been pointing at. She didn't know how she felt about taking an animal's life. "Can you teach me?" She asks suddenly and focuses her bright blue eyes on him. They were a little unsettling because it seemed more like an adult wolf was looking at him rather than a younger puppy.

Well of course they hadn't, he thought -- she was a girl. Never mind that Grandma was a great hunter and one of his teachers and she was a girl. She didn't count, because she was grandma. "It's a lot of fun," he said, and hedged for a moment.

What should he do? He couldn't very well take her to go track the deer. For one, he wouldn't be doing it all by himself that way. For another, she'd almost certainly get hurt and then he'd get in trouble and that wouldn't help anything. Well, fine. He'd just have to show her something easy, then, and come back for the deer another time.

"So you've never hunted nothing? In your whole life? Not even a grasshopper?"
PostPosted: Mon Jan 03, 2011 5:10 pm

"Nope." She says and wags her tail a little. It had never occurred her to 'hunt' a grasshopper before and she was curious as to how it was done. "Why would I hunt a grasshopper? They aren't very big." She points out, looking around and spotting one of the little hopping insects. No, it didn't look very appetizing to her. Then she began to wonder why anyone would want to eat a grasshopper. Maybe if they were starving? Yes, she thought that would work.

"Well that's kind of the point, isn't it? They're not very big, so they're hard to get. It's a challenge." He gave her the disparaging sort of look that suggests he thinks she knows absolutely nothing about the world, and then shrugs. "They're really fast, see. And they jump really high."

He held up his paw, as high as he could get it. "Like, this high. Sometimes even higher."

He glanced around, caught a grasshopper in his sights, and dropped immediately to his belly. He crawled forward, painstakingly slowly, keeping the bug in his line of vision. then, with a sudden movement, he leaped forward, extending his paws to cup around the bug. His tail thudded behind him when he felt it squirm under his paw.

"It's not about eating it, or even killing it. Hunting's about the chase. the thrill. the challenge."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 09, 2011 4:10 pm

"Ah." Majime says, her eyes brightening with interest. A challenge certainly sounded fun to her. She smiled and wagged her tail, watching him intently as he stalked the bug. She was a quick learner, so she thought she might get the move down within a few tries. She crouched like he did, mimicking an almost perfect imitation of him. She thought about it for a moment, then went took the pose a step forward. She lightened the weight on her paws so she wouldn't make as much noise, then she looked slowly around for a grasshopper. When she found one her eyes narrowed and she lifted her tail slightly. Her mind was clicking away at all the possible escape routes the grasshopper could take and she shifted to compensate for that. She seemed oddly intense for such a young pup.

Then, without warning, she leaped forward and cupped her paws around the grasshopper. She wagged her tail and grinned, only to have the grasshopper suddenly pop out from under her paw. She was astonished, having not thought quite that far, then she woofed and tried to pounce on the tiny thing again.

He laughed -- not mean-spiritedly, but a laugh full of mirth. "Yeah," he said, rolling back up to his feet, letting the grasshopper go. "They'll do that. See, grasshoppers are good to catch because they don't bite. Other bugs, they will. Like beetles bite sometimes, and bees are the worst."

He wrinkled his nose. He'd been stung by a bee once and it was pretty awful. Not an experience he was eager to relive.

PostPosted: Sun Jan 09, 2011 4:37 pm

She huffs some and flicks, her tail, then lets the grasshopper go. "Oh. That was actually sort of fun." She says and smiles a little. Now that her attention wasn't focused on a task anymore, her mind started to wander. She'd have to try catching more grasshopper later to perfect that skill. Perhaps she'd try something bigger. "I like hunting." She chirps and wags her tail slightly. It was certainly different than anything else she'd been doing lately.

"There's a lot more to it than that," he said, with only the slightest touch of impatience. Dubhe was honestly surprised with himself -- he'd never realized he could have so much fun teaching someone something, or that he could be good at it. She didn't seem so bad at all, for a girl. "But, you know. You can start with that."

then, in a completely nonchalant way, trying very hard to look like he wasn't interested at all, "...so...what do you do all the time?"
